Breaking Open The Word
January 15, 2017
Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 This reading is a short passage from the second song of the Servant of the Lord. The Lord will show His glory through His servant whose mission is to restore Israel and bring salvation “to the ends of the earth.” Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul sends greeting to the people of Corinth, who have been called to be holy and consecrated in Christ. Gospel: John 1:29-34 When Jesus visits John, John recognizes Jesus as the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” John further indicates that Jesus is truly the Messiah and “God’s chosen One.” Consider/Reflect: A logo or trademark makes it easy to recognize a product. The sari of St. Teresa of Calcutta or the gentle smile of Pope Francis leaves no doubt of whom we speak. A familiar melody or words from the scripture often bring joy to our ears. They stay with us. When the Baptist said he did not at first recognize the Christ until another sign was offered, he kept on looking. I ask myself, where can I recognize Christ today? How can I discover Him? The saint of Calcutta found Him in the poor and abandoned. The Holy Father tells us He is out on the streets, in the poor, homeless and needy. Where do I look? Many young people give of themselves as Jesuit Volunteers, builders for Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers and Sisters for our youth. These volunteers serve a dual roll; they discover Christ and bring Him as well. It is kind of like a smile-something we give away and hold on to at the same time. May others recognize the Christ in us.

HEALTH “TIP” OF THE MONTH
HAND WASHING
Washing your hands is probably your best defense against getting a cold, virus or other infectious diseases. Hand washing helps you wash away germs that you picked up from people, surfaces or from animals. Since germs can’t be seen, washing your hands frequently is important, especially at the following times:
Before, during and after you handle food Before you eat After you use the bathroom (even in your
own home) After touching animals or animal waste Every time you cough or sneeze and cover
your mouth After changing a child’s diaper
The best method for hand washing is to wet your hands and place liquid soap on them. Rub your hands together including your wrists, palms, back of hands, fingers and under finger nails for 20 seconds, just long enough to sing “Happy Birthday”, then rinse and dry your hands. If you can’t wash-sanitize your hands with gel.
CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS
for tax purposes If you would like a statement of your 2016
contributions, call Mazie at the Parish Office on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday or leave a voicemail 609-296-2504 ext. 225.
Tax statements require a week’s notice.
We can mail it to you, or you may pick it up at the Parish office. Please note: Same day contribution statements are not available.

Respect Life Corner
The Respect Life Ministry Committee Meets:
the 3rd Thursday of each month in the Faith Formation Center @1:30 PM
New Members always welcome! The late Congressman Henry Hyde quoted the following very thought provoking statement: "When the time comes as it surely will, when we face that awesome moment, the final judgment, I've often thought, as Fulton Sheen wrote, that it is a terrible moment of loneliness. You have no advocates, you are there alone standing before God and a terror will rip through your soul like nothing you can imagine. But I really think that those who truly believe in Respecting all human life will not be alone. I think there will be a chorus of voices that have never been heard in this world but are heard beautifully and clearly in the next world, and they will plead for everyone who has been in this movement. They will say to God, 'Spare him because he loved us.' And God will look at you and say not 'Did you succeed?' but did you try?''

New Jersey Organizing Project is a
grassroots, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that was founded two years ago by superstorm Sandy Survivors who were still struggling to get home. Our primary mission is to stand up for South Jersey and the Shore by working to pass policies that make life better for everyday people, change institutions, hold corporations accountable and ensure elected officials stand with us, their constituents.
NJOP launched a community-driven survey project, The Sandy Truth Project, in October, 2016. NJOP, Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, Rutgers University researchers, and Stockton University’s Office of Service-Learning collaborated to develop this survey and trained community members to implement the survey in Sandy impacted communities along the Jersey Shore. We launched this survey because we have arrived at the fourth anniversary of superstorm Sandy and thousands of families are still struggling. The results of this survey will give us much needed data about the overall state of the superstorm Sandy recovery and how Sandy Survivors’ health, finances and other aspects of their lives have been impacted. With this data, NJOP and our members will take much needed action to protect and improve the lives of Sandy Survivors.
We would like to give you the opportunity to participate in this survey because this community has been impacted by Sandy. Members of the NJOP Students from Stockton University will be in our community on JANUARY 16, 2017 going door to door asking you to fill out this survey. This survey is completely confidential and the privacy of participants will be respected. We hope to have a report based on the survey results by early next year.
We appreciate any way in which you can support our efforts. Please call us at 609-312-3899 with any questions or concerns.

FAMILY of the MONTH
MEET THE EGGERT FAMILY
This month we are honoring the family of Sue Eggert which consists of her and her son Dominick, her mother Terry and her sister Mary Lou Shelkonovzeff. The family began its journey here when Terry registered as a parishioner in 1969. Sue is a Eucharistic Minister, a Lector and works in our parish RCIA program. They are a great example of what the term “family” can mean. Family is where our faith is nourished. It is where we first learn to pray and where we first learn to forgive. It is where we receive strength and support to handle whatever life brings forth. Get to know the Eggerts, and you will see how they embody this way of thinking in their lives

Did you know that one out of every four people who is homeless is a child? Or, those families with children make up 40% of the people in this country who are homeless? Family homelessness is a national problem.
Our local Affiliate Family Promise of Southern Ocean County is one of 202 programs across the country uniting the faith community to help children and their families who are homeless.
The volunteers are the lifeblood of this program. They provide a variety of services: cooking and serving meals, transportation drivers, maintenance, and landscaping, spending time with our families, playing with children, computer help, homework help, and programs for kids, reading a book to a child, organizing at the day center, movers, staying overnight. The opportunities to get involved are endless. Beyond these services, volunteers interact with our guests treating them with respect and responding with compassion. Additionally, they help at the Day Center as well as on our committees.
We are in the process of forming a St. Theresa’s Team for Family Promise. We are hoping to host families in our Faith Formation Center in 2017.
Our first training session will be held: Wednesday, January 18, 2017
At 2:00 PM & 7:00 PM at the Faith Formation Center.
You need to attend only ONE meeting To learn more about Family Promise or to
learn how you can help, please call Liz Golla at 609-994-3317.
We hope you will join us!
