Easter Sunday

He is Risen! Alleluia

Today we celebrate the ‘high point’ of our Catholic faith: the resurrection of Jesus

from the dead. During the past week the Liturgy has been so rich in meaning.

Last Monday in Palmerston North Cardinal John blessed the Holy Oils to be

used in the coming year. On Holy Thursday evening the Mass of the Lord’s

Supper reminded us of the gifts of the Eucharist, the ministerial priesthood and

our duty to serve others as Jesus did. On Friday afternoon the wood of the cross

and Christ’s death at Calvary were highlighted. Finally at the Easter Vigil last

night and today on Easter Sunday we rejoice in the resurrection of Christ from

the dead.

Welcome

Last evening at the Easter Vigil we welcomed thirteen new parishioners into our

faith community. We warmly congratulate:

Dave Charlson, Eric Rava, Sonny Sanjeewa, Genevieve and Blair Tarry who were

received into full communion with the Church through the sacraments of

Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.

Pip Charlson, Carren Corkery, Matthew Hubball, Natasha Humphrey,

Madeliene Paa, Primo Paa and Jo Smith were received into full communion with

the Church through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

Lucy Robinson who was also part of the RCIA group was received into full

communion with the Church at the Easter Vigil in Gisborne.

We warmly congratulate these new parishioners and assure them of our support

and prayer as they continue their faith journey in our Parish Community.

Thank You

I am sure all of us would like to thank the RCIA team of: Joan Callaghan, Sister

Muriel, Sister Helen and Father Damian for their guidance, generosity and

support of these new Catholics. I very much appreciate their commitment and

contribution over many years to the RCIA programme.

A sincere thanks to all who have helped make our Easter ceremonies such a

wonderful celebration in the Parish. There are so many people in all three

churches who have put in a great deal of effort to ensure that our Churches are

looking at their best and that our liturgies have been celebrated well. May God

grant each of you many graces and blessings this Easter.

St John’s College, Hastings

Last Friday the St John’s and Sacred Heart Colleges hosted a Fia Fia night at St John’s College. The night was a wonderful celebration of Pasifika culture and

gave our students the chance to showcase their talents. The St John’s College gym was packed and we would like to thank the students, their families, teachers, and the wider community for their support in making our Fia Fia night such a success.

On Holy Thursday, our prefects undertook their annual Cross Walk, where they meditate on the Stations of the Cross at schools and churches in Napier and Hastings. A Station of the Cross is meditated on at each destination in collaboration with the school or Parish community. Last year we were unable to do the Cross Walk because of the Covid lockdown so we appreciated the opportunity to connect with our communities in this way as part of Holy Week. Students and staff at St John’s College would like to wish our families and Parish community a blessed and happy Easter.

Enrolments are now open for Year 8 students for 2022. Please phone the office to make an enrolment interview.

We are holding our Prospectus Evening on Thursday 13th May at 7:00pm. We welcome families with Year 8 boys to come along and learn about St. John’s College.

Sacred Heart College, Napier

Our SHC Young Vinnies group will be hosting a Caritas Carnival for the month of April to fundraise for “Caritas Aotearoa”. The first event

will be held this Friday. Our girls are well underway with preparations for this lunchtime event and are very excited.

Next weekend a number of our girls will attend the North Island Athletic Championships in Hamilton.

I wish all our families and Parish communities a very happy and holy Easter.

Reignier Catholic School

The children at Reignier have been celebrating Holy Week by beginning each day together in prayer. On

Thursday, we had a special Foot Washing liturgical celebration, put together by Mrs Pip Brooker. The Year Six children acted out this scripture reading for the school, parents and staff. Two of our Year Six children represented Reignier at the ANZAC Speech Competition on Thursday, assisted by Ms Amy Lee. We wish everyone a Happy Easter and time to reflect on the resurrection of Christ.

Sacred Heart College, Napier Position Available – Teacher Aide.

We are an integrated Catholic girls’ college for Year 9–13 in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay. An opportunity exists for a Teacher Aide to join our Learning Support Team for 10 hours per week from the start of Term 2 until the end of the year. The position is fixed term and reviewable annually as funding is reviewed by the Board of Trustees. The position is very likely to be renewed each year. The role is to support literacy and social skills in the classroom, working across a range of curriculum areas.

The successful applicant will be flexible, computer literate, patient and have an interest in working with teenagers. Excellent literacy and numeracy skills are essential. The ability to assist as a reader/writer for students during NCEA examinations and internal assessments is a definite advantage. It would also be advantageous to have previous experience of working with young people and/or working closely in a team environment. Support for the special character and co-curricular life of the school is expected.

Faith in the resurrection of Jesus says that there is a future for every human being; the cry for unending life which is a part of the person is indeed answered. God exists: that is the real message of Easter. Anyone who even begins to grasp what this means also knows what it means to be redeemed. Pope Benedict XVI
