THIRD SUNDAY of EASTER— YEAR C

4TH & 5TH MAY 2019

“ DO YOU LOVE ME ?

Three times Jesus asks Peter, ‘Do you love me?’ and three times Peter answers, ‘You know I do’. Some writers suggest that the three-fold question by Jesus and the three-fold reply by Peter is intended to balance out the triple denial of Jesus by Peter at the time of the arrest and trial of Jesus. Where once Peter denied even knowing Jesus, he now declares his love for Jesus in no uncertain terms. It is a reminder to all of us that there is no act that we can perform that cannot be forgiven by God and from which we cannot come back.

Historical Context

When Jesus asks Peter, ‘Do you love me?’ and Peter repeatedly assures Jesus that he does, Jesus instructs Peter to ‘Feed my sheep’. This image of feeding sheep is used to describe the caring leadership Peter is to take over the other disciples and the other followers of Jesus. The image of a shepherd has carried through the years and finds expression in the stylised shepherd’s crook (crosier) that is carried as a symbol of office by bishops. The people of the church are often referred to as the bishop’s flock – further carrying on the image of a shepherd and his sheep. © Greg Sunter

On the fifth Sunday from this weekend is Pentecost Sunday. We are encouraged to pray for the church, for our communities and for ourselves, that we be embraced by the strength and the love of the Holy Spirit.

As a help to this please visit the ‘Changing Minds—Changing Hearts’ information on the inside of this bulletin.

PRAYER FOR THE NORTH ROCKHAMPTON CATHOLIC

COMMUNITY

Lord Jesus, you gave us your Mother, Mary, to be our

mother and our patron of the North Rockhampton Parishes

of Saint Mary’s, Our Lady Help of Christians and Holy Family. We pray with grati-tude for our three Parishes

which have been the sign of your presence in North Rock-hampton for over 100 years. We give thanks for the gifts

bestowed upon all parishion-ers, both past and present

and for the many priests and religious who have served you and your people in our

Parishes. As we move through these times of

change where our worship-ping communities seek to

come together more closely, we pray that your Holy Spirit will guide us and that Mary, our Mother, will continue to support and protect us both

now and into the future. Amen.
