Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association Data: Office of Alumni Relations

Definitions:

Alumni: Defined as (a) all persons who have been admitted to any school or college of Carnegie Institute of Technology or Carnegie Mellon University, who have completed at least one semester of classes in a degree program, and who have left the University in good standing and (b) all persons who have received an Honorary Degree from the University.

Active: Defined as all alumni who maintain a current postal or E-mail address E-mail Only: Indicates that the only contact information available is E-mail address

Alumni Interest Group: Any group of Carnegie Mellon alumni who share a common interest or bond and who desire to affiliate with each other as a sub-group of the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association. Alumni Interest Groups are formed around at least one of the following criteria:

• Former membership in an officially recognized student organization, • A shared personal characteristic (such as ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation), • A shared postgraduate professional experience (such as entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors,

etc.).

Chapter: Historically, “clan” was chosen to describe the regional alumni groups of the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association, reflecting the Scottish heritage of Andrew Carnegie. In recent years, “chapter” is used with more frequency as new groups are formed. For ease of reference, “chapter” refers to both clans and chapters.

5.1

Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association Alumni are the single constant and enduring element of Carnegie Mellon University. There are more than 70,000 active alumni around the world, building upon the personal relationships and experiences gained as a student. From laboratories and theatrical stages to executive offices and virtual offices at home, Carnegie Mellon alumni continue their lifelong journeys of discovery and achievement. Alumni Relations “works to identify” the intersection of the university's interests and the interests of its graduates and then expanding that common ground through meaningful engagement over time. The Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association seeks to provide alumni with a wide range of ways to engage with the university and each other that reflects their own experiences and interests; to provide multiple two-way channels of communication and to provide a wide array of meaningful volunteer roles for alumni. These roles require varying time commitments to accommodate differing alumni interests and availability. The university community is enriched by the active engagement of as many alumni as possible. Furthermore, the Alumni Association believes that as alumni grow more engaged with and closer to the university they will be inspired to support the university not only financially, but also by mobilizing their personal time and energy on behalf of the university as advocates in many different ways. Vision: Alumni Relations’ vision is to be a world class alumni organization that sustains and strengthens the lifelong bond between alumni and Carnegie Mellon University. Mission: Alumni Relations’ mission is to connect and reconnect alumni, students, parents and friends to the university and each other through experiences and communications for the purpose of generating multifaceted support for Carnegie Mellon. Core Values:

• Uphold a professional environment in which staff and volunteers feel valued, well utilized, and are offered opportunities for growth and development

• Engage staff in work that inspires creative problem-solving, teamwork, and integration throughout the division

• Encourage open, genuine, and direct communication as well as active listening and positive engagement

• Promote a culture of flexibility and empathy to achieve work-life balance • Celebrate diversity among colleagues and alumni, and benefit from different perspectives and life

experiences Strategic Objectives (FY08-FY13):

• Increase the number of alumni who participate in the Carnegie Mellon lifelong community, both face-to-face and electronically

• Develop students’ recognition of the Carnegie Mellon lifelong community by engaging them during their campus experiences

• Strengthen the presence of the Alumni Association within the university community • Build an educational culture that facilitates alumni lifelong learning

Alumni Association Board:

• Twenty-one Voting Members: ⇒ Eighteen Directors – six elected each year for renewable three-year terms ⇒ Three Officers serving two-year terms each – President, Immediate Past President, and

President Elect ⇒ Three Ex Officio Members – VP for University Advancement, Director of Alumni Relations,

and representative from the Alumni Relations Student Advisory Council (AR SAC) • Seven Committees: Nominating, Awards, Regions, Classes, Volunteer, Alumni Interest Groups,

and Communications

Programs and Services Alumni Interest Groups Alumni Interest Group programming involves reunions, anniversary celebrations, networking, and communications to sustain relationships of members with each other and with the university. Active Alumni Interest Group organizations include but are not limited to Scotch ’n Soda, the Carnegie Mellon Black Alumni Association (CMBAA), and Kiltie Band. Awards and Recognition Since the first Alumni Awards in 1950, more than 500 individuals have been recognized by the Alumni Association Board for their achievements in the arts, humanities, science, technology, business, and for their service to the university. The Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association currently presents awards annually in the following seven categories:

• The Alumni Service Award and Distinguished Service Award recognize volunteer service to Carnegie Mellon or any of its alumni organizations.

• The Alumni Achievement Award and Distinguished Achievement Award recognize accomplishment in one’s chosen profession which brings honor to Carnegie Mellon.

• The Faculty Service Award recognizes current Carnegie Mellon faculty who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the support and education of Carnegie Mellon alumni.

• The Recent Alumni Award recognizes either professional accomplishment or service to the university by those who have graduated within the last 10 years.

• The Student Service Awards recognize student involvement in service to the university community and in service organizations while on campus.

Chapters Carnegie Mellon works with alumni from across the country and around the world to maintain active alumni chapters that develop and promote regional activities. These groups provide interaction and intellectual stimulation for alumni, as well as for students and their parents, while advancing Carnegie Mellon and further developing the alumni network. There are currently 50 active domestic chapters (30 Central and 20 Tepper School of Business) and 20 international chapters (9 Central and 11 Tepper).

5.3

Class Notes Volunteer class correspondents gather news about classmates for inclusion in Carnegie Mellon Today, Class Newsletters, and on the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Web site. Nearly 250 class notes were submitted by alumni in fiscal year 2007. Electronic Services Carnegie Mellon provides an array of online services for alumni at – http://alumni.cmu.edu. Among those services are:

• Online Directory – Through a password-protected environment, alumni can update their personal and professional contact information and search for other alumni by geographic location, class year, college, or department. One-third of all alumni (24,142 alumni) are registered users in the Online Directory.

• Alumni Career Advisor Network – The Alumni Career Advisor Network allows alumni and students to post detailed profiles of current and past professional experience, assist other alumni and students with job-related queries, and search for contacts by industry, occupation, geographical region, school, department, major or keyword.

• LinkedIn – The Alumni Association has partnered with LinkedIn, the premier online professional networking Web site, to create a networking group for the Carnegie Mellon community (including students, faculty and staff). Through the Carnegie Mellon Alumni group of more than 5,000 members, alumni can find and reach new business contacts, accelerate their careers through referrals from the group, post and distribute job listings, and search for great jobs.

• E-mail Forwarding – Carnegie Mellon provides E-mail forwarding accounts for all alumni. This service allows E-mail to be passed along to another E-mail account. As users change E-mail service providers, they do not need to send an announcement to their entire address book, but merely change the forwarding address within the service. Approximately 17% of all alumni (12,535 alumni) have activated their E-mail forwarding address.

Reunions Reunions are an ideal time to return to Carnegie Mellon to renew friendships, learn about the university today, attend classes and tours, and to hear panel discussions and lectures from faculty, students, staff, and other alumni. In addition, class volunteer committees work throughout the reunion year to plan a myriad of class-based activities – from class dinners and other social opportunities to seminars and discussions. Reunions are held every five years for the 20th through the 80th reunion year during Homecoming Weekend in the fall and for the 1st, 5th, 10th, and 15th reunion years as part of Spring Carnival. Student Programs The Alumni Association sponsors several programs during the year to raise awareness among the student population regarding alumni activity, including Dinner with 12 Strangers, Slice of Life seminar series, alumni speakers series, and student-alumni social events. In addition, student and family-related programs are held during Orientation, Family Weekend, and Commencement. Finally, the Alumni Association also manages the Carnegie Mellon University Highland Ambassadors program. The Highland Ambassadors are a select group of students who are dedicated to the positive promotion of the university, serve as hosts for high level guests to the university and assist with special events. The program is a prime opportunity for students to show off their Tartan school spirit while enhancing their personal and professional skills. Tartan Travel The Tartan Travel program offers alumni unique opportunities to maintain their connections with the university and fellow alumni. Each year, Carnegie Mellon alumni travel together on educationally oriented excursions to locales around the globe. There were three travel destinations in 2007, featuring Italy, Russia and the Galapagos Islands.
