Indio do ApartamentoVINICIUS CANTUARIA

Since his 1990s relocation to New York from his native Brazil, Vinicius Cantuaria has quietly imposed himself at the veryforefront of his country's music. A singer-songwriter of versatility and grace, Cantuaria has over the course of ten albumsadopted the mores of the downtown NY scene into his craft with intriguing and beguiling results. Never losing sight of thebossa nova and Brazilian jazz, his involvement with the likes of Bill Frisell, Brian Eno, Marc Ribot, Arto Lindsay, RyuichiSakamoto etc has created a unique style and sound.

With « Indio De Apartamento » (Indian in the Apartment), his newest album, he confirms this trend and goes even furtherin brevity and purity, while maintaining an exemplary singularity towards the Bossa Nova world. Dedicated to the memoryof his mother, who died last year, this solemn and serious album, recorded between New York and Rio de Janeiro, againfeatures an array of special guests; Bill Frisell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jesse Harris and Norah Jones on the piano.Cantuaria himself sings and plays guitars, drums, percussion and keyboards. Again, the result is a magnificent album, ofincredible subtlety and full of contrasts, of great unity and remarkable diversity, with a pure and completed classicism.

ANTONIO ZAMBUJO

António Zambujo is revolutionizing Fado with amazing finesse. With a rustling clarinet and cavaquinho here and there, his velvety voice sparkles across the sensual music on this new album dominated by the guitar and led by the contrabassof Ricardo Cruz, Zambujo's faithful producer.

Quinto with its fifteen refreshing new titles reflects cozy light and cool jazz mixed with soft Bossa. More than everconsidered the guarantor of a tradition and an innovative pioneer, Zambujo is as much an heir to Amália Rodrigues as heis to Chet Baker and João Gilberto.

Colombia - Sixto Silgado 'Paito' & Los Gaiteros de Punta BravaSIXTO SILGADO 'PAITO' & LOS GAITEROS DE PUNTA BRAVA

Sixto Silgado 'Paito' represents the "gaitas" ensemble (flutes accompanied by alegre, llamador and tambora drums) at itsmost lively and dynamic, preserving its original expressiveness and revitalising it with his own sensibility. Now recognisedas a direct descendant of the interaction of Colombia's three major peoples (Whites, Blacks and Indians), gaitas music isenjoying a remarkable rebirth.

In recent decades, gaita has become an integral part of the concept of Colombian identity. It represents "the encounter ofthree peoples who formed into one, with the birth of Colombian music."

Although the term gaita is used for bagpipes in Spain and Bulgaria, and for an oboe in North Africa, the Colombian nameapplies to a straight flute. About 90cms long, the Colombian gaita is made from the heart of a cactus, with a head madefrom a mixture of beeswax and charcoal. Gaitas are female (five apertures) and male (two apertures), the two of whichare played together.

The Green SeagullTOMMY EVANS ORCHESTRA

The Green Seagull is a mesmerising jazz suite inspired by the life of the composer’s uncle, a parish priest who investeddecades building spiritual, cultural and political bridges. At the helm is composer and conductor Tommy Evans. As one ofthe most prolific and original young musicians in the UK, Evans is the founder of Submotion Orchestra and is also inGentleman’s Dub Club. But it is this suite (for which he was awarded the 2011 BASCA Award for Contemporary JazzComposition) that is his most cherished project to date.

The tremendous breadth of influences in the music - jazz, dubstep, Indian, classical - acts as a fitting vehicle toshowcase some of the finest young jazz talent in the UK. The result is a vibrantly modern big band jazz sound of lushsoundscapes and hypnotic grooves which create an epiphany of music that is accessible, unconventional and deeplymoving.

This hugely anticipated album will be released as a double CD, the first CD featuring the main suite and the second CDcontaining remixes by some of the top names in the electronic and underground music scenes including Phaelah, ioi,Planas, Jack Sparrow, SYNKRO, Ruckspin, Eddie Ranking and LAXX.

A live version of The Green Seagull (from Scarborough Jazz Festival) was broadcast over successive weeks on BBCJazz Line-up in September. Toddla T played a remix from the album on his Radio One show.

My History of JazzIIRO RANTALA

Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala offers his personal history of the music that captivated him when he was 13. "My history ofjazz" takes us from Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, upon which Rantala threads the album like a string ofpearls, to George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, Juan Tizol, Thelonious Monk and the Swedish cool jazzsaxophonist Lars Gullin, alongside five original Rantala compositions.

With "my history of jazz" Rantala places himself at the head of a new pianist generation that liberates itself from theinflated cult of the "all new" and instead returns to build on the old jazz tradition of studying the great inventors of thegenre.

Rantala always impressively demonstrates that he is a talented stylist with an unprecedented versatility, one who breaksdown styles and reconstitutes them – borne by unrivalled technology. There's baroque, ragtime, bebop and swing to beheard on it, Scandinavian melancholia, ballads with a French character, fusion, smoothjazz and even tango.

The Last Set - Live at the A-TrainWALTER NORRIS & LESZEK MOZDZER

Walter Norris (born 1931) was a part of the west coast jazz scene from 1954 to 1960 and played with all famous localmusicians – Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Charlie Mariano, Herb Geller. In 1958 he appeared on OrnetteColeman’s legendary recording “Something Else!!!”. Two years later Norris went to New York, where he worked at HughHeffner’s Playboy club from 1963 to 1970, first as a pianist and then as artistic director.

Norris came to Europe with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in the early 70s and recorded several albums includingthe acclaimed LP “Drifting” with George Mraz. After a short stay in New York with Charles Mingus Quintet, he accepted ajob in the Berlin SFB Radio Orchestra in 1977 and moved to Berlin permanently. He later became a professor for jazzpiano at the Berlin Music University “Hochschule der Künste” and continued working as a composer and musicologist.

Polish jazz star Leszek Mozdzer was a Norris fan and they met in Berlin, collaborating once only for a gig in Nov 2008 atBerlin jazz club the A-Train. On the night of October 29, 2011, Walter Norris died in his home in Berlin at the age of 79.After one year, almost to the day, ACT releases “Last Set – Live at the A-Trane”, a recorded dialogue between the twooutstanding pianists and extending the legacy of an unjustly unknown artist. As Mozdzer explains, “Walter didn’t have abig career, he just played music. He was a true artist, though he often shone in the background, and it is about timesomeone drew attention to him”.

The Moon, The Stars and You Collector's Edition CD & DVDNILS LANDGREN

„The Moon, The Stars And You“ is the sequel to Landgren's highly successful “Sentimental Journey” and a is realconcept album. Jazz has always had a certain fascination for the moon. After love, it is one of the more common topicsfor jazz standards, and for Nils Landgren is no exception. “The moon and the stars are just wonderful to look at –especially with someone special. The moon is closely connected with love,” says Landgren, showing his romantic side. “Iknew that there are so many good songs about the moon to choose from.” These songs include jazz standards, such asHenry Mancini’s “Moon River” or Herbie Hancock’s “Stars in Your Eyes”, as well as folk and pop songs like KrisKristofferson’s “Please Don’t Tell Me How The Story Ends” or “Moonshadow” by Cat Stevens, and he also includesSouth American song by Kurt Weill called “Holofotes” alongside his own compositions.

Now the much-loved album is rereleased in a “Collectors Edition” including an exclusive Live-DVD. The original albumgains its particular atmosphere out of a big though still subtle production featuring the NDR Big Band and the StockholmPhilharmonic Orchestra. The live DVD setting is a more intimate affair featuring Landgren and his quartet.

ContinuumDAVID VIRELLES

One of the most in-demand pianists in jazz, Cuban-born pianist David Virelles makes his Pi Recordings debut withContinuum, a collaborative effort with bassist Ben Street (Danilo Perez, Kurt Rosenwinkel), legendary drummer AndrewCyrille (David Murray, Cecil Taylor) and Cuban folkloric percussionist/poet Román Díaz.

Virelles' compositions are inspired by various aspects of Afro-Cuban religious practices; systems that include music, poetry, storytelling, dance, symbols, art, divination, and magic. He draws specifically from the rituals and mythssurrounding the Abakuá, an Afro-Cuban secret society. Helping to bring that tradition to life is Roman Díaz, who spinspoetry that speaks to the multi-layered fabric of Cuban culture.

Upon arriving in New York in 2008 David almost immediately began playing with such established band leaders asSteve Coleman, Mark Turner, Ravi Coltrane and Chris Potter. More recently he has played with ECM recording artistTomasz Stanko, accompanying the trumpet player on his most recent ECM recording. As of late he has become aregular performer at the Village Vanguard. His work as a leader has garnered critical acclaim for its innovation as well asits maturity.

"David Virelles arrived in New York in 2008 and seemed to go straight to the top of the class: playing gigs with SteveColeman, Chris Potter and Mark Turner and generally making himself noticeable, breaking through with strong andhard-to-define patterns and sounds." - New York Times

Landing GroundLAURA JURD

An impressive debut CD from trumpeter/ composer Laura Jurd. Conceived as a unified whole, the album with its sixpieces and three improvised dialogues reveals a young composer of character and immense promise.

The album deals with themes of departure and return. With both a jazz and a string quartet (the Ligeti Quartet), the musicis at the increasingly traversed borders of contemporary classical music and jazz. From Kind of Blue era Miles Davis, toechoes of Messiaen, Alban Berg and Shostakovich, a distinctive individual and appealing voice emerges.

Three free-improvised dialogues where Laura Jurd responds in real time to the imaginative narratives of pianist (ElliotGalvin) cellist (Ben Davis) and drummer (Corrie Dick) provide the ideal counterweight to the six structured and plannedcompositions. Nine carefully programmed tracks, which, through thematic and musical connections, build to a satisfyingwhole.

Liam Noble: "There is some really extraordinary writing here; music of real warmth and invention, a huge stylistic rangeheld together with meticulous attention to detail and a mature sense of purpose."

Mark Lockheart: “This is a stunning debut by anyone's standards but coming from a 21 year old musician it's quitemiraculous.”

Café & AlegriaManuel Rocheman meets Toninho Horta

Friend and disciple of Martial Solal, Manuel Rocheman is one of the greatest French Jazz pianists, excelling both in hisown compositions as those of his favourite pianist, Bill Evans, to whom he just dedicated his last album (NJ 620911).

Thanks to a common friend, he met the great guitarist Toninho Horta, legendary Brazilian guitarist who influenced PatMetheny, and they decided to make a record together. Piazzolla !

ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE JAZZDaniel Yvinec

The ingenious artist, Piazzolla who crossed borders to mesh musical style and culture, symbolizes the many values thatDaniel Yvinec holds dear, and that are inherent to the artistic approach he has used with his ONJ since 2009. Piazzolla'sworks are the perfect exploration playground for an orchestra accustomed to in-depth examination of sound, colour, individual and group playing that advocates open jazz far from parochial and stylistic concerns. Daniel Yvinec workedclosely on the conception of this new repertoire with the brilliant musician and arranger, Gil Goldstein. Their work focuseson the melodies and rhythm developed throughout the Argentinean master's works, as much as it does on Piazzolla'sbandoneon playing - the essential components that give this music its very special flavour. Piazzolla! by the ONJcelebrates the diversity of this music, offering a new and audacious reading full of surprise.

Bright And SweetVIRGINIE TEYCHENÉ

This album confirms it, Virginie Teychené is a musician with a voice. She strolls through her imaginary museumdedicated to jazz singer-songwriters and brings her own light to each of its rooms. A grazing light in Familiar Dream, abright light in Tight, the light of dawn in I'm Gonna Go Fishing and that of dusk in Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. Thecontributions of her co-musicians are intense due to their restraint; Gérard Maurin's weightless double-bassarrangements, Stéphane Bernard's chiaroscuro piano playing, Jean-Pierre Arnaud's dance-like drumming, and last butnot least, Éric Le Lann's inspired trumpet playing, all make Bright and Sweet an exemplary jazz album, where all theminiatures that make it up are in fact merely beginnings.

Double RainbowVIRGINIE TEYCHENÉ

To celebrate this young French jazz singer's signing to Jazz Village, the label re-releases her first two albums - Portraitsand I Feel So Good - under the collective title Double Rainbow.

"Dark and yet luminous, nostalgic and joyful, Virginie Teychené's voice generates a feeling of elation. In a climate ofexultation, the young singer and the musicians avoid the temptations of a grotesque imitation or on the other hand ofartificial originality.

So this is a Jazz record belonging to an untimely art form rarely given media coverage to. Here, vocal expression isdeliberately cleared of all fioriture so that it can reach the essential and reveal the subtleties of the music. That is whatseduces the most. With a disarming sobriety, tutelary Jazz figures are brought to mind (composers such as BillyStayhorn, Charles Mingus and Antonio Carlos Jobin but also improvisators: Chet Baker, Eddie Jefferson, JamesMoody…) and as an indirect consequence, the sketch of a self-portrait stands out, the one of a Jazz singer."Jean-Claude Rocailleux (from the sleevenotes)

Blue SkiesCASSANDRA WILSON

With her new album Another Country riding high in the Jazz Charts, here is a timely re-issue of an early work originallyout on JMT in 1989.

Blue Skies is the third album of Cassandra Wilson, the Mississippi-born New Yorker. In this third production under hername she has dug deeply into the rich mine of jazz standards and brought to the surface tunes that are classic yet notoverstrained. Cassandra moves in the area of jazz standards with the same ease as in her own music represented byher first two albums, never failing to put her own stamp on the music. Her vocals are artful instead of artificial, forcefulinstead of forced, and there is no fooling around with unnecessary ornamentation, every note is sincere and getting downto the point.

Top Jazz Album of 1989 - Billboard, USA»...Blue Skies, is a collection of standards that should find a place in the home of every jazz lover.« - Jazziz, USA» ...the young singer is surely and deftly claiming her own place in jazz with each succesive album. "Blue Skies" isanother step in that process.« - Chicago Tribune, USA (June 1989)».... there is this one by Cassandra Wilson, who owes little of her unique style to any of the artists mentioned but seemsalready to have joined them in top ranks of interpreters of American Song.« – Jazztimes, US (Jan 1989)

Love Lost and Found AgainLAVERNE BUTLER

New Orleans-born Laverne Butler's voice exudes an established confidence and impeccable taste. Eschewingscatological pyrotechnics, she relies instead on nuances, caressing syllables and imbuing all sorts of speculativemeaning into rests in a most sensuous, though never sensationalistic, way. With her accompanist-Music Director BruceBarth, LaVerne turns her attentions to a group of standards and jazz tunes that highlight not just her sexy ribbon of avoice, but which also give her accompanying quartet plenty of space to show their wares. Featuring the deeplyburnished tenor sax of Houston Person floating his patented dark-toned arabesques like filé in the gumbo, and Barth'sinteresting harmonic sense, LaVerne Butler's impressive debut on HighNote Records is a true jazz-vocal record in everysense of the phrase.

NaturallyHOUSTON PERSON

Houston Person, after more time in the recording studio than perhaps any other tenor player, has become something of ajazz institution. Learning his craft at a time when some of the earliest pioneers of jazz saxophone – Coleman Hawkins,Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, Ben Webster – were playing, he was able to develop his own unique sound and voicewhich acknowledged these iconic men without ever resorting to imitation.

Person is an eloquent messenger from a jazz landscape firmly rooted in the blues, church music, the great Americansong composers and the vocalist-like communication of a song's meaning through the saxophone. For his latestHighNote recording Houston has asked legendary pianist Cedar Walton to sit in on the date and the collaborationbetween these two giants results in some of the most genuinely musical playing to come out of the famed Rudy VanGelder studio. If it is ostentatious show that floats your boat, look elsewhere. Though the formidable chops of eachmember of the quartet are evident in every phrase, technique is completely at the service of the music on the set list, never for showboating or cheap effect.

Throw Down Your ArmsPROFESSOR

Live album and DVD recorded at the Reggae Sun Ska Festival 2011.

In 2011 Harrison « Professor » Stafford - Groundation’s vocal and spiritual leader - was recording Madness, his first sideproject. This very personal album was the result of meetings and discussions he had during his travels in Israel andPalestine. He tells us : « The idea to record this album came from decisive discussions I had in Ramallah with an Arabicpoet. He told me that he knew reggae music and mentioned Bob Marley particularly. I was surprised to hear that he didn’tlike reggae music because of the negative message it conveyed. I was stunned. I never heard somebody associateMarley’s music to something other than positive vibrations and positive messages. The poet told me : « let me ask yousomething : why reggae music is so Zionist in his message ? » Wahoo, everything became clearest to me ! »

So Harrison Stafford wants to prove that reggae can and should talk to everybody and that it’s an universal languagewhich cross borders and conflicts. He manages it splendidly through this new live album Throw Down Your Arms whichoffers versions of tracks from his first album alongside new tracks.
