Kenny Wheeler (1930-2014) was an unassuming giant of modern jazz, a daring improviser, and a writer of many beautiful and slyly unorthodox tunes. ‘Songs for

Quintet’, his final recording, features compositions of relatively recent vintage.

The album was recorded at London’s Abbey Road Studios in December 2013 with four of Kenny’s favourite players. Saxophonist Stan Sulzmann, guitarist John Parricelli, bassist Chris Laurence and drummer Martin France work together marvellously as an interactive unit, solo persuasively, and provide support for the tender and lyrical flugelhorn of the bandleader. The CD, which also includes a fresh approach to “Old Time” (which the Azimuth trio used to play) and “Nonetheless”, a piece introduced on ‘Angel Song’ (5330982), is issued to mark what would have been Kenny Wheeler’s 85th birthday (14 January 2015).

The session turned out to be the last occasion on which Kenny played with other musicians. The melodic imagination and the improvisational courage remain; the flugelhorn soloist could not be anybody but Kenny Wheeler. His exchanges with Stan Sulzmann throughout the album are full of charm, and indicative of the sense of friendship and mutual respect that characterises the whole band.

Kenny Wheeler’s recorded legacy includes albums now regarded as contemporary jazz classics such as ‘Gnu High’ (1777598), ‘Deer Wan’ (8293852), and ‘Music for Large and Small Ensembles’ (8431522), all on ECM. The music of ‘Souvenance’, by turns graceful, hypnotic, and taut and starkly dramatic, was recorded in 2014 - six years after oud-master Anouar Brahem’s last ECM album, ‘The

Astounding Eyes of Rita’ (1798628). “It took a long time to write this music,” he acknowledges, noting that his emotional world had been usurped by the unfolding story of political upheaval sweeping first through Tunisia then through the neighbouring countries. Extraordinary waves of change, accompanied by great hopes and fears. “I don’t claim a direct link between my compositions and the events taking place in Tunisia,” says Anouar, “but I have been deeply affected by them.” New directions for the music find pianist Franҫois Couturier returning to the Brahem group, frequently supported by subtle string orchestration. The strings (the distinguished Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana) have a glowing transparency and fragility in these pieces, often providing shimmering texture against which the compelling contributions of the quartet members - and, above all, Anouar Brahem’s unique oud-playing - stand out in bold relief. ‘Souvenance’ translates as “remembrance”, but the album - like the individual track titles - was named retrospectively. The double CD was recorded at the Lugano studio in May 2014, and was produced by Manfred Eicher. ‘Nardis’ features solos by Ian Carr on flugelhorn, George Smith on tuba and, rarely heard, Jack Bruce on acoustic bass. Complementing this is what might be considered the best big band version of Coltrane’s ‘Naïma’ ever heard. ‘Angle’ by Howard Riley demonstrates how receptive this collection of musicians was to new music and in particular free jazz. ‘Ballad’ by Mike Taylor features a tenor solo by Dave Gelly and is a typically exquisite Taylor piece.. Michael Garrick’s ‘Dusk Fire’ is given such a fantastic overhaul that it almost steals the show. ‘Study’ by Alexandre Tansman, benefits from an arrangement by Mike Taylor with Barbara Thompson and Henry Lowther soloing on soprano and trumpet respectively. ‘Rebirth’ is a quintessential Mike Gibbs number and features solos by John Mumford on trombone and Frank Ricotti on marimba and vibes. And that title track: a major departure in jazz being a complete composition, based on one, long continuous melody, with no repeated passages, letting the solos and interludes between them develop, and indeed exhaust, the musical implication of the main theme. For now, Christina might be a best-kept-secret on the world blues stage, but with her head-turning stage presence, force-ten charisma and her new record Come And Get It, she’ll be on everybody’s lips. Albert Castiglia: The Caravan was completed by the US-American musician with Cuban and Italian roots. As a teenager Albert Castiglia started playing guitar and realized that writing his own music was the best way to express his thoughts. His first breakthrough was when Junior Wells hired him for his touring band, so they played several world tours together. In 1997 the New Times magazine in Miami named him the “Best Blues Guitarist” and finally, in 2002, Castiglia released his debut Burn. In February he then released his debut on Ruf Records. The Peace Collective has been put together by the team behind The Justice Collective, whose

re-recording of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother in aid of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster topped the charts during Christmas 2012.

On the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Day Truce, during WW1, which inspired The Farm’s 1990 hit All Together Now, many of the UK’s biggest music stars have united as The Peace Collective, to re-record the song. The new track features a backing choir of schoolboy footballers from the Premier League and German Bundesliga. All profits from the release, will go to the British Red Cross and the Shorncliffe Trust. The Red Cross deployed more than 90,000 personnel to help the wounded and injured during WW1. The new recording is being produced by Simon Britton, and executively produced by Suggs (Madness) – who produced The Farm’s original version – and Mick Jones (The Clash). ‘Raiz’ marks fifty years of Joyce's imperative involvement in Brazil's rich musical heritage: paying tribute to some of the beautiful Brazilian standards she was listening to

around the time she first stepped foot in a recording studio. Joyce's insurmountable talent and unfaltering grace shine as bright as ever on this landmark record.

In 1964, Joyce, aged 15, first stepped into a professional recording studio. Her older brother, also a musician, was a member of Rio's early bossa nova clique: a good friend of Eumir Deodato, Luis Carlos Vinhas and Roberto Menescal (by this point, a notable name in Brazil). Finding a private, home tape recording of Joyce playing guitar and singing, Joyce's brother played it to Roberto Menescal. When Joyce returned home from school to find her secret song exposed, she ran to her room, slammed the door and cried for the rest of the day. But a month later, she received a call from Menescal, asking if she wanted to sing on a record he was producing: an album called 'Sambacana', featuring the music of a little known composer from the state of Minas Gerais. Joyce excitedly accepted and took her first step into a recording studio, where she realised what she was capable of and what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Fifty years later, Raiz (meaning roots) is Joyce's celebration of fifty years since that moment. A fresh recording of some of the beautiful bossa nova and chic Brazilian jazz standards she was listening to and inspired by as an adolescent girl growing up in Rio. The album is a powerfully nostalgic master class in Joyce's inimitable style and her stunning vocals still hold the intimacy and raw talent of a teenage girl's first recording, but with the prowess and nuance that come with an astounding five-decade career. It seemed only fitting to Joyce to reciprocate Roberto Menescal's invitation into the studio and Menescal features on Joyce's versions of his 60's bossa classics 'O Barquinho' and 'Nós e o Mar'. The Scottish bassist from Bishopbriggs had invited long time companions such as drummer Ginger Baker and guitarist Clem Clempson. The enthusiastic audience had the opportunity to congratulate him with an extraordinary celebration. In a unique session, Bruce and guests like drummer Simon Phillips and pianist Bernie Worrell celebrated jazz, rock and blues highlights from the holy Cream days and songs which Jack had released on his solo records. From Willie Dixon's classic "Spoonful" to the magical ballad "Ships in the Night" with singer Maggie Reilly, the interpretations are distinguished by a rare talent for improvisation and intensity. No one had ever experienced "Sunshine of Your Love" in such an opulent arrangement before: brass instruments, percussion and keyboards. In contrast to this was "Running Thru Our Hands" with pianist Gary Husband. In this spectrum the extraordinary talent of the multi-instrumentalist, composer and singer Jack Bruce, who brought his bass to the front row as a solo instrument, can be seen. This ability had made him stand out when he played in other bands with Alexis Korner, John Mayall and Manfred Mann at the beginning of the 60s, before forming Cream in 1966. He advanced to become the most important writer in this trio with "I Feel Free," "Politician," and "White Room". Especially this title, which belongs to one of his most popular songs, has been released in this version for the very first time. The late guitarist Gary Moore is much more than only a substitute for Eric Clapton. On her third album for Chesky Records, Xiomara Laugart uses her own distinctive style to interpret Cuban classics from the golden era of the 1920s. ‘Tears and Rumba’ is a

fine introduction to the singer-songwriter and features works by two extremely influential composers of that era, Maria Teresa Vera and Miguel Matamoros.

As the title of the record suggests, the songs that Laugart interprets so elegantly range from the moody trova style standards like Vera's "Ausencia" to the danceable son montuno of Matamoros' "La Mujer de Antonio". The heart wrenching lyrics of "Ausencia" speak about a love that will never be. Laugart, who has been influenced by Chaka Khan as much as by Vera and Matamoros, will have everyone packing the dance floor with her swinging versions of "La Mujer de Antonio" and "Nadie Se Salva de la Rumba", made popular again during the 1980s by Celia Cruz. Featured on the album are a number of excellent musicians, who are part of a new generation from Cuba that continues to flow into New York City - bassist Yunior Terry, guitarist Roman Lajara and flautist Javier Porta. The Venezuelan Luis Quintero is the veteran of the group having played with everyone from Eddie Palmieri to Diana Krall. One of the youngsters of the group, Axel Tosca Laugart, the singer's son, was responsible for the new arrangements.
