New (2nd) studio album from Scotland's most explosive and progressive (arguably finest) folk big band Treacherous Orchestra. This is the follow up to the

BBC Folk Awards nominated Origins.

The Treacherous Orchestra story is one of many strands, a tale told spanning the length and breadth of Scotland. An un-definable collective force fusing people, concepts, styles and influences, shaping a musical supergroup that defies description. From the North to the South, East to the West they came, converging in the musical melting-pot of Glasgow, trading ideas over beers and playing music with ferocity, verve and passion. This is a tale of musical origins…

These roots and strands – the essence of the band – are the stories of the members themselves, all emerging from their own musical habitat and adding their own distinctive identity. The band is composed of seasoned musicians who are already treading notable paths and reaching international recognition with other bands as performers, arrangers and composers. Those bands that have gone before them, the likes of Martyn Bennett’s Cuilinn Music, Wolfstone, Peatbog Faeries, Shooglenifty and Salsa Celtica tell the tale of a country full of bright musical minds, ideas, innovation and evolution. It is a tale that continues with the rise of this epic Orchestra.

Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs SOUSOU10CD 5060186926131 CD SONNET SOUND POP £7.99 SONSOU10LP 5060186926148 LP SONNET SOUND POP £10.99

‘Ten Love Songs’ draws on the musical assistance both of new friends and old, (including Anthony Gonzalez of M83, Svein and Torbjorn from Röyksopp, her

long-term collaborator Lars Horntveth of Jaga Jazzist, and the Trondheimsolistene Chamber Ensemble).

The album was essentially recorded, orchestrated and produced by Sundfør herself, resulting in what is arguably her most compelling and fully realised work to date.

‘Ten Love Songs’ begins with a lament and ends with a stark reminder of a world without love. What this album cost Sundfør we can never know but her fearless honesty and extraordinary talent makes this album one of the most compelling and anticipated releases of 2015. It follows on from her album “The Silicone Veil’, which was released in 2012 to huge critical acclaim. Sundfør’s London show on 3

rd March has been upgraded from The Lexington to the Scala

due to popular demand. “It is a brilliant album. Album of the year, quite possibly. Yeah, I know it’s only January, but just trust me on this.” – CMU Press: Reviews confirmed for Q Magazine, Mojo and Uncut Features in The Sun, Mixmag and The Beat Praise for ‘The Silicone Veil’: “Single-mindedness and a clear artistic vision coincide, making Sundfør utterly arresting.” Mojo **** “Sundfør has a fantastically powerful, window-bending face-melter of a voice…. it's quite stunning.” Q “If there is a more beautiful and ambitious song this year than ‘White Foxes’… well, there just isn’t.”. Uncut **** “A breathtaking collection of spectral songs… she staked a claim to be the new Bjork.” The Times ***** Tracks: Darlings / Accelerate / Fade Away / Silencer / Kamikaze / Memorial / Delirious / Slowly / Trust Me / Insects

John Kilzer - Hide Away £7.99 ARR31966 822533196629 CD ARCHER RECORDS ROCK

This is a Memphis record from kickoff to fadeout, its dozen tracks moving handily from electric blues to congregational-style call-and-response choruses to folk-rock ballads. It's an eclectic assembly of styles and performances, one a lot of younger artists might not

attempt. But Kilzer's firmly in the pocket all the way through. Like a lot of Southern writers, Kilzer's got a keen sense of how the best can be salvaged out of the worst parts of us, how something bigger can reach down and turn our weaknesses to strengths. ‘Hide Away’ is a record tuned into that seeming paradox.

The roster of musicians on Hide Away reads like a choice blend of Memphis's old guard and young turks. Sid Selvidge's son Steve, currently of The Hold Steady, contributes guitar and backing vocals. Luther Dickinson, son of legendary producer Jim Dickinson, currently of The North Mississippi All-Stars, plays guitar and lap steel. Contemporary folk/blues powerhouse Alvin Youngblood Hart shows up for guitar and vocals, and keeping the beat is renowned drummer Greg Morrow. Kirk Whalum is on hand to help serve up "Till We're All Free," Kevin Houston (North Mississippi Allstars) co-produces, and a host of equally heavy hitters deepen an already formidable bench. The album is advertised in Maverick. Press: Feature conifmred in Classic Rock Presents The Blues Review confirmed in Q Tracks: Lay Down / Until We're All Free / Hide Away / Love Wants To Give It's Heart To You / Sleeping In The Rain / Crescent Moon / Babylon / The White Rose And The Dove / Love Is War / California / Eyes Of Love / Graveyard Jones

Colin Hay - Next Year People (Deluxe Edition) COM46412 766397464121 CD COMPASS ROCK £7.99 COM46431 766397464312 LP COMPASS ROCK £9.50

Colin Hay's voice and visage are familiar to millions as front-man, songwriter, and vocalist of pop sensation Men at Work ("Down Under", "Overkill", "Who Can it Be

Now?"). But over the past 15 years he has reinvented himself as a solo artist, regularly selling out theatres and listening rooms across the US and around the world and

introducing himself to a new generation of fans in the process. The frequent use of his music in TV and film - including hit shows such as Scrubs (on which he has made several cameo appearances) Army Wives and Modern Family, the hit soundtrack to the film Garden State and the recently released Words and Pictures - has proven the timeless appeal of his songs. ‘Next Year People’ is the work of an artist who is a true master of his craft. The album is full of quizzical, curious, and cynical yet open hearted songs with catchy melodic hooks that underscore deeply insightful lyrics. Some of the songs are based on Colin's personal experiences such as "Waiting in the Rain". Written about his parents and the almost mystical experience he had growing up in a music shop in Scotland, surrounded by instruments and a constant stream of 50's and 60's radio hits. Others, according to Colin, "just appear from somewhere" such as "Mr Grogan", a dark study of a fictional character whom he has been developing over the years. The album's title track, "Next Year People", is a stand out composition – a stark but beautiful homage to the depression-era farmers who kept going by holding on to hope that next year would be better. "They kept doing the same thing and expecting a different result," explains Colin. "I can relate, although their situation was so much more bleak." The album was produced by Hay and mixed by Chad Fischer (Chasing Mavericks, Ice Age 3, Lisa Loeb) and includes contributions from two young Cuban musicians, San Miguel Perez and Yosmel Montejo, both of whom recently emigrated from Havana, as well Larry Goldings on piano, Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel) on B3, and as Colin's wife, vocalist Cecilia Noel. Deluxe edition contains two bonus tracks (not found on the digital or vinyl album ) Tracks: Trying To Get To You / If I Had Been A Better Man / (Did You Just Take The) Long Way Home? / I Want You Back / Next Year People / Lived In Vain / Scattered In The Sand / To There From Here / Mr. Grogan / Waiting In The Rain / Are We There Yet? (Bonus Track) / Lament For Whiskey McManus (Bonus Track)

Hanne Klosto - Forever Maybe

JANSEN042 7041881384226 CD JANSEN PLATEPRODUKSJ POP £7.99 JANSEN043 7041881384318 LP JANSEN PLATEPRODUKSJ POP £9.99

Hanne Kolstø is a musical trapeze artist. She evolves, pulsates and lives to find what is true for herself, and she does so while balancing high above the circus ring.

Her music exudes confidence, but the underlying uneasiness poses a constant threat to the comfort of the listener.

'Forever Maybe' is Hanne's fourth album in as many years, and there are more doors open to different genres than before. However, there are still airy vocals, soaring under the canvas ceiling, and still it sounds like something coming directly out of nature. After all, that is where she belongs. The last album, 'Stillness And Panic' (Jansen Plateproduksjon 2013), received rave reviews in the international media, including The Guardian, The Sunday Times and Q magazine. She was also given solely excellent reviews in Norway, including 5s and 6s from newspapers VG, Dagbladet, BT and Østlendingen, from radio station NRK P3 and Spirit magazine, to name a few. Producers of 'Forever Maybe' are Øyvind Røsrud Gundersen and Hanne Kolstø once again, but she is also collaborating with her previous partner from bands such as Thelma & Clyde, Love:Fi and POST, namely musician and producer Morten Martens. Tinsley Ellis - Tough Love £7.99

HFM1012 012886101221 CD HEARTFIXER MUSIC BLUES

Tinsley Ellis releases 'Tough Love', an all-new set of soulful originals from the veteran Georgia blues rocker. Produced by Ellis, the album features a compelling

variety of tunes that will add to his reputation as one of the genre’s most engaging and creative artists.

In 'Tough Love', the versatile and critically acclaimed Ellis has crafted perhaps his most complete record, combining masterful guitar work and vocals with songs that both rock and soothe. Given some of Ellis’ finest material to date, 'Tough Love' presents a wide ranging set that moves effortlessly from the catchy opening track, “Seven Years,” through the rollicking shuffle groove of “Midnight Ride,” the Dylanesque “Hard Work,” and a plaintive soul drenched ballad, “Should I Have Lied.” Additional musicians, all of whom are longtime veterans of Delbert McClinton’s band, include Nashville keyboard whiz Kevin McKendree (Brian Setzer), bassist Steve Mackey, and drummer Lynn Williams (John Hiatt). A hardworking road warrior who boasts numerous U.S. and international tours, Ellis will begin a worldwide slate of 2015 festival, theatre and club bookings in January. Harry Manx - 20 Strings And The Truth £7.99

DMCR00996 875531009965 CD HARRY MANX BLUES/WORLD MUSIC The latest tracks from slide master Harry Manx featuring his signature instrument the Mohan Veena. Mostly instrumental, this is the 'chill' recording that Harry's fans have

been waiting for. '20 Strings and the Truth' is the most recent collection of tracks from multi instrumentalist Harry Manx. Like many of Harry's recordings, the music has its roots in both Delta Blues and Indian Classical music. This recording will stand out from Harry's previous recordings simply because it is mostly instrumental. Harry has chosen two well known vocal songs (one from George Gershwin and the other from Bob Marley) to compliment the seven instrumentals. Harry is joined on the CD by Clayton Doley on keyboards, Kelby McNayr on drums and Niel Golden on talblas. Harry plays a wide variety of instruments including drums, all guitars (slide or otherwise) and the Mohan Veena. These tracks are all journeys unto themselves, kick back, shift into now, enjoy. Tracks: Veenarama / Phunkistan / Summertime / Waiting In Vain / Blues Walk / Love Is Enough / At Your Feet / Into The Unknown / Crazy Love

Gaelle Buswel - Black To Blue £7.99 BUSCD948 1003130403948 CD BUSWEL RECORDS COUNTRY

Gaëlle Buswel, is an artist who does not leave you indifferent. Her music has its roots in the blues and her voice reaches straight for the heart. She is a great live performer with already more than 500 concerts across Europe under her belt and a recent tour in North America to

introduce her second album ‘Black to Blue’. As a teenager, she immersed herself completely in blues music, delving into the albums of Bonnie Raitt and Jonny Lang. So what should one expect from a tall, blond, brown-eyed girl who appears on stage with a guitar and a smile to die for? A performance from Gaëlle Buswel is like an earthquake making seismic waves from the very first note. She is a seasoned live performer who has been playing concerts solo and with other bands since the age of 13. Her fan base began to grow rapidly after a video of her covering a Tina Turner hit began circulating on Internet. She spent several months playing her compositions with her guitar, solo in London. She sang in the London Underground as a challenge. Back in France, fans asked her to do the same in the Paris Metro. Martin Callingham - Tonight, We All Swim Free £7.99

F0120 5060159431204 CD FOLKWIT RECORDS INDIE

Martin Callingham will release his debut solo album 'Tonight, We All Swim Free' on 16th February via Folkwit Records. Recorded at Bristol's legendary Toybox Studios,

the album was co-produced by Ali Chant whose credits include Gruff Rhys, PJ Harvey, Perfume Genius, Seasick Steve and Yann Tiersen.

The ‘Joyce the Librarian’ singer/songwriter's 2012 album 'They May Put Land Between Us' won critical acclaim and airplay from the likes of BBC6's Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson as well as BBC Radio 1's Phil & Alice Show along with some rather high praise from the world's music press. After a somewhat nomadic childhood and spells in Herefordshire, Birmingham and London, Martin now calls Bristol home. The album, written between a short solo tour of Italy last December and the first studio sessions in April is a collection of acutely melodic and affectingly personal songs, interspersed with the occasional instrumental interlude, field recording and heartening slice of lo-fi pop. The arrangements are sparse in places, lush and expansive elsewhere, with Martin's delicate guitar and soothing vocal at their core. Tracks: Rhosgoch / Knots / Hare on the Hill / Portland Square / Gliding / Ken / Build Us a Path / On Your Mark / Folding / Tides Return

Ant Law - Zero Sum World £7.99 WR4663 5052442005551 CD WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS JAZZ ‘Zero Sum World’ is the second solo release from exciting guitarist/composer Ant Law. His band features four guiding lights in British contemporary music: Ivo Neame (piano), James Maddren (drums), Michael Chillingworth (reeds) and Tom Farmer (bass). Each musician turns out stellar

performances on the record and are given ample room within Law’s compositions to shine. The album showcases an eclectic mish-mash of influences from around the world, but it's Law’s thematic writing and playing that binds its eleven tracks together into one uniform statement. No doubt the extensive touring the band has done over the last two years comes into play in the overall presentation and tightness of Ant’s often tricky and rhythmically shifting compositions. Both Neame and Chillingworth improvise with aplomb while Maddren’s considered touch flows like water through even the most complicated corners of Law’s tunes. Every track features Law's guitar tuned in perfect 4ths which lends itself to unique harmony. A resident in London since 2008, Law regularly performs with Tim Garland, Jason Rebello, Mica Paris, Gwilym Simcock, Leon Ware, Asaf Sirkis, Koby Israelite, Camille O’ Sullivan and is known as a pioneer in the “perfect fourths” tuning system for guitarists. He is a published author on the subject and his book ‘3rd Millennium Guitar: An Introduction to Perfect 4th Tuning’ was released Mel Bay Publications in 2011. Personnel: Ant Law (guitar), Michael Chillingworth (reeds), Ivo Neame (piano), Tom Farmer (double bass), James Maddren (drums) Press: Reviews confirmed in The Guardian, Jazzwise, Jazz Journal, Marlbank + LondonJazzNews Tracks: Zero Sum World / Prelude / Waltz / Mishra Jathi / Asymptotes / Parallel People / Triviophobia / Leafcutter / Symbiosis 14:21:34 / Monument / Blues

Pablo Marquez – Leguizamon: El Cuchi Bien Temperado £9.49

4810972 028948109722 CD ECM NEW SERIES CLASSICAL/WORLD

Gustavo “Cuchi” Leguizamón (1917-2000) was a unique figure in the musical culture of Argentina - a poet, composer, pianist and guitarist, a popular artist and a highly

sophisticated musician. Here Pablo Márquez pays homage with an album of Leguizamón’s pieces arranged for solo guitar.

Leguizamón was born in Salta, a city in the foothills of the Andes and a seedbed for outstanding popular musicians. Though born in St Pedro de Jujuy (in 1967), Pablo Márquez was raised in Salta and, aged 13, first encountered Leguizamón there in his capacity as a history teacher: Cuchi was also a lawyer and teacher in addition to being one of Argentina’s greatest musicians. As a composer, Leguizamón was an exceptional melodist and an adventurous traditionalist. The majority of his work consists of zambas, which Márquez considers Salta’s quintessential musical form. Leguizamón brought a sense of harmonic freedom to these dance pieces, incorporating his melodic and harmonic ideas in Argentine traditional music, “without ever losing its essence or strong sense of rootedness”. A builder of bridges between art music and oral traditions, he was inspired by classical music, especially Beethoven and 20th century composers including Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky and Schoenberg.

The title of Márquez’s album makes reference to Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, and the guitarist here similarly arranges Cuchi’s music for all 24 major and minor keys. Márquez says: “To provide a wealth of colours I set myself the challenge of never repeating any key... It was my way of enriching folk practice, and also a reflection of my classical training in this encounter with traditional music.” This is the second ECM album for the Swiss-based Pablo Márquez following his disc of music by Luys de Narvaez, ‘Musica del Delphin’ (4765878), released in 2007, but further recordings are in preparation. Marta & Gyorgy Kurtag – In Memoriam Haydee: Jatekok (Games and Transcriptions)

0762896 044007628966 DVD ECM NEW SERIES CLASSICAL £11.99 0762897 044007628973 BLU-RAY ECM NEW SERIES CLASSICAL £13.79

Subtitled ‘Játékok - Games and Transcriptions for piano solo and four hands’, this is a film, directed by Isabelle Soulard, of a concert given in September 2012 at Paris’s Cité

de la Musique by the composer György Kurtág and his wife. The duo performances of Márta and György Kurtág have long been distinguished by flinty new music precision, matched by a quick-witted playfulness and underpinned by a quality of affection. “What playing!” raved the New Yorker’s Alex Ross of a ‘Játékok’ concert. “Notes were placed with surgical care; inner voices gleamed in crystalline patterns; elusive emotional states were painted with quick, light strokes.” From its origins in the early 1970s as a good-humoured unsystematic approach to teaching contemporary keyboard techniques to young players (early pieces in the series included use of clusters, glissandi, harmonics, playing with palms and forearms - a wide range of gestures), ‘Játékok’ (Games) has developed into a compendium of epigrammatic homages, jewelled miniatures dedicated to composers from Scarlatti to Stravinsky and Christian Wolff, and tributes to colleagues and influences. In this special case the whole programme - 40 pieces plus three encores - is dedicated to the memory of the Kurtágs’ good friend, musicologist Haydée Charbagi (1979-2008). Interspersed amongst György Kurtág’s pieces are his much-admired Bach transcriptions - ‘Játékok’ is a work that has gained strength through contrasting and cross-referencing with other music. The whole programme closes with a radiant version of Bach’s ‘Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit’. Among ECM’s many widely-praised recordings of Kurtág’s music is a 1997 CD of ‘Játékok’ (4535112), likewise performed by the composer and his wife. “A very special experience - as memorable and as profound as any to be had from new music today,” said Gramophone. Daniel-Ben Pienaar – Beethoven: The 32 Piano Sonatas £22.49

AV2320 822252232028 CD10 AVIE CLASSICAL

Daniel-Ben Pienaar trains his sharp intellect and formidable technique on the most revered body of works in the classical piano repertory, Beethoven’s 32 Piano Sonatas.

Having scaled the heights of J. S. Bach’s “48,” The Well-Tempered Clavier (AV2299), as well as Bach’s Goldberg Variations (AV2235) and Mozart’s Piano Sonatas (AV2209), Daniel-Ben Pienaar turns to arguably the most revered body of works in the piano repertory, Beethoven’s “32”. Training his sharp intellect and formidable technique on this touchstone of classical canons, Pienaar’s interpretations are altogether as stimulating as they are engaging.

Personnel: Daniel-Ben Pienaar (piano)

Critical acclaim for Daniel-Ben Pienaar: “(5 stars) Pienaar has a technique at once athletic and graceful...fresh, spontaneous, original readings that shed new light on the keyboard player’s Bible.” - BBC Music Magazine (Instrumental Choice) on Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier (AV2299)

“The work has a reputation for difficulty both from the performer's and listener's point of view but the young South African makes light of its technical rigours and springs plenty of interpretative surprises.” - The Sunday Times (Classical CD of the Week) on Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations (AV2260)

“This new recording is indispensable.” - BBC Music Magazine on Bach’s Goldberg Variations (AV2235)

“Interpretations where, within the letter critically observed, a numinous power breaks free. Momentous Mozart.” - Gramophone Editor’s Choice, on Mozart The Piano Sonatas (AV2209)

Nicholas Phan, Michael Leopold & Ann-Marie Morgan - A Painted Tale - Blow, Dowland, Ferrabosco etc. £8.49

AV2325 822252232523 CD AVIE CLASSICAL

On ‘A Painted Tale’, his third solo album for AVIE, tenor Nicholas Phan turns to songs of the English Renaissance and Baroque by Blow, Dowland, Ferrabosco, Lanier and Purcell, in a

program which tells a story of love gained and then lost. The composers presented on ‘A Painted Tale’ were greatly influenced Benjamin Britten, the muse of his two previous recordings - ‘Still falls the Rain’ (AV2258) and ‘Winter Words’ (AV2238), his solo debut recording which topped the Best Classical Recordings lists of NPR, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. ‘A Painted Tale’ - the title taken from a lyric by 16th century composer Thomas Morley - features songs with lute and viola da gamba by Blow, Dowland, Ferrabosco, Lanier and Purcell. Describing the programme, which tells a story of love gained and then lost, Nick says, “Reading the poetry in these songs I am fascinated by how little the human experience has changed over the centuries. By assembling these various songs into what I call ‘a pastiche song cycle,’ I hope that creating a dramatic context for these pieces will highlight how relevant this material still is today.” Personnel: Nicholas Phan (tenor), Michael Leopold (lute), Ann-Marie Morgan (viola da gamba) Critical acclaim for Nicholas Phan: “A most impressive performance...Phan is mesmerising.” - BBC Radio 3 CD Review “Refinement and steel, rare among Britten’s recent tenors...a first-class performance.” - BBC Music Magazine “An inviting, distinctive recording” - Gramophone “A star in the making...The voice is graceful, mellifluous and durable, but behind it lie sharp intelligence, poetic insight and a confident individuality.” - The Sunday Times Promotional videos: http://youtu.be/WXLA73K64Bk + http://youtu.be/73VlFdriHDQ Tracks: 1. Benjamin Hochman – Variations - Benjamin, Berio, Brahms etc. £8.49

AV2327 822252232721 CD AVIE CLASSICAL

On ‘Variations’, pianist Benjamin Hochman explores an age-old art form with works ranging from Brahms’ Handel Variations to 20th and 21st century inspirations by George Benjamin,

Luciano Berio, Oliver Knussen and Peter Lieberson. Pianist Benjamin Hochman follows his critically acclaimed AVIE debut Homage to Schubert (AV2281) - which paired two sonatas by the 19th century master with modern day tributes by Kurtág and Widmann - with a like-minded program centred on the age-old musical form of variations. At the heart of the album is Handel Variations by Brahms, a grand master of the art form. The four shorter Piano Variations on this recording are by major composers of the late 20th and early 21st century: Oliver Knussen, Luciano Berio, George Benjamin and Peter Lieberson. Each composition is a piece of great beauty but with results that are strikingly diverse. Personnel: Benjamin Hochman (piano) Critical acclaim for Benjamin Hochman: “Excellent and inquisitive...vibrant and stylish.” - The New York Times (on Homage to Schubert, AV2281) “Requisite songfulness...incisively sprung dramatically reflected...meticulous balances and textural control.” - Gramophone (on Homage to Schubert, AV2281) “Classical music doesn’t get better than this.” - The New York Times

Geoffroy Couteau – L’obscur est un chemin - Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier: Complete Piano Works £8.49

ODRCD314 855317003141 CD ODRADEK RECORDS CLASSICAL

French pianist Geoffroy Couteau presents the music of Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier, a young and vibrant Parisian composer whose music is immediately appealing and who enchants his

listeners with his immersive soundscapes. Bruneau-Boulmier’s pieces range from the meditative and serene to turbulent and occasionally even violent. Frequent references to literary themes offer openings to his ineffable and poetic imagination. Most of all, one is taken in by a pervasive sense of nostalgia. Bells, sometimes promising joy, sometimes sounding like a knell, punctuate the journey. Geoffroy Couteau, who has collaborated with the composer since 2010, offers a sensitive and intimate performance of these works, here presented for the first time on disc. He is joined by world-renowned pianist, François-Frédéric Guy, who makes a guest appearance on the four-hand piece, ‘El Borge’. The title of the fourth work, ‘Dark is a Way’, sets the tone and the theme of the album: it is a path which takes us from something like the sombre “gibet” of Ravel’s ‘Gaspard’, and delivers us to, if not an absolute transcendence, at least a wise sense of calm acceptance with recurring rays of hope. Praising his debut recording dedicated to Brahms, Geoffroy Couteau was described as a “fearless” pianist by Le Monde de la Musique, which compared the young artist’s interpretation to piano giants such as Gilels, Katchen, Lupu, Kempff, and Serkin. Regularly exalted in the press among his emerging generation of pianists, his last CD devoted to Chopin and Scriabin also garnered enthusiastic critical acclaim. Born in 1982, Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier could still be considered as a “young composer” at the time of this recording. Nicolas Southon comments: “Even in these early works he was able to create a very personal musical universe, while not trying to hide his musical roots. One can find at times traces of Debussy, Ravel, Henri Dutilleux, Philippe Hersant, Maurice Ohana and Pierre Boulez. His music is incontestably French, by virtue of its refinement, its quest for a certain euphony, its extremely well crafted writing, its self-restrained lyricism and its skilful ability to make an acoustic space come into being.” Personnel: Geoffroy Couteau, François-Frédéric Guy (piano) Tracks: 1. Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra of Hamburg & Jürgen Gross - Michel-Richard Delalande: Symphonies pour les Soupers du Roy £8.49

CC72664 608917266429 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS CLASSICAL

This recording by the Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra of Hamburg and conductor Jürgen Gross represents the first time that these works by the 17th century French composer Michel-Richard

Delalande have been recorded in their original arrangements for five parts. Delalande wrote his ‘Symphonies pour les Soupers du Roy’ to be performed at special meals that the King of France attended. These were formal occasions and took place before an invited audience. In this context instrumental music played an important role, its magnificence reflecting the regent’s powerful self-image. Michel-Richard Delalande assembled the first volume of his ‘Symphonies pour les Soupers du Roy’ in 1703 and it contained 10 suites made up of 160 pieces. In all he wrote around 300 movements of this type. They are mostly short compositions, either using traditional dance models or presented as character pieces. The Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra of Hamburg was established in 1999. The group has released two previous CDs for Challenge Classics. The first was devoted to the music of the early 18th century Dutch composer Johann Christian Schieferdecker (CC72531), and the second featured orchestral arrangements by Jörg Jacob of music by J.S. Bach (CC72625). Jacob has a long-standing relationship with the Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra both as performer and programme researcher. For this recording he has produced a complete reconstruction of the featured works, with the music being heard on disc for the first time in its original five-part arrangement. Riccardo Cecchetti – C.P.E. Bach: Sense and Sensibilities - Sonatas, Fantasias & Rondo £8.49

CC72666 608917266627 CD CHALLENGE CLASSICS CLASSICAL The highly regarded Italian keyboard soloist Riccardo Cecchitti performs music by C.P.E. Bach on the fortepiano. The works on the disc are the four Sonatas (Wq 55:5, 57:6, 57:4, and 59:1); two

Fantasias (Wq 59:5 and 59:6); and the Rondo in G major, Wq 57:3. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach is now recognised as a one of the most significant composers of the time that covered the transition between the baroque and classical periods. As opposed to his brothers, he always cultivated the musical traditions associated with his father Johann Sebastian whilst adopting a more dramatic style of writing which would later reach fulfilment with the music of Haydn and Mozart. Italian keyboard soloist Ricardo Cecchiti is the founding member of various chamber music groups including the internationally renowned Voces Intimae piano trio. He plays both period and modern pianos and fortepianos. His repertoire, whilst including contemporary pieces, is mostly concentrated on chamber, solo classical and early romantic music. Michael Gees, Frans Ehlhart & Marion von Tilzer - Secret Key Masters - Music by Michael Gees, Mario von Tilzer & Franz Ehlhart £9.99

CC72656 608917265620 Hybrid SACD CHALLENGE CLASSICS CLASSICAL

This hybrid SACD presents compositions and improvisations written and performed by three excellent pianists: Michael Gees, Marion von Tilzer, and Frans Ehlhart. All of these artists are

considered to be leading experts in their own specific area of music. Pianist Michael Gees is mostly known as an accompanist of Lieder. He has worked regularly with artists such as Christoph Prégardien and Julia Kleiter. As a soloist he mostly improvises, often starting with a single chord and developing the melodies from there. In contrast Austrian-born composer/pianist Marion von Tilzer is very much a composer, having previously written both chamber music and orchestral works. She is particularly known for her talent of merging completely different styles in a surprising and original way. Her synthesis of Indian classical music with contemporary western music has led to collaborations with musicians, choreographers and filmmakers from different parts of the world as a composer and performer with her own groups. Frans Ehlhart was born in Australia. The son of a Hungarian mother and a Dutch father he has lived in Holland since 1950. After studies at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam he chose a career in jazz and music theatre over a career in classical music. Personnel: Michael Gees, Frans Eilhart, Mario von Tilzer (piano) Tracks: 1. GEES: Extempore I 2. VON TILZER: Counting the Stars 3. EHLHART: Chicken Dance 4. VON TILZER: Apollo 14 5. Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra & Myung-Whun Chung - Dvorak: Symphonies Nos. 3,6,7 & 8 £9.25 ELQ4820264 0028948202645 CD2 AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

These sublime performances by the Vienna Philharmonic under Myung-Whun Chung received glowing critical acclaim at the time of their original release and are now coupled for this

Eloquence release. Dvorák's Eighth Symphony', wrote Bernard Shaw following a performance at the Crystal Palace in 1893, 'is very nearly up to the level of a Rossini overture, and would make excellent promenade music at the summer fêtes out in the grounds.' In advancing this view, Shaw turned on its head an essential quality of Dvorák's music that only a few years earlier had been held out as one of its principal merits, with Eduard Hanslick for example, exclaiming euphorically in the early 1880s: 'Let us rejoice that in our uncreative age – an age of reflected glories – we may still encounter as talented a composer as Dvorák, with his innocent emotions and cheerful creativity.' Posterity has happily proved Shaw incorrect. While the Ninth Symphony 'From the New World' would rank near the top of any classical favourites list, the Seventh and Eighth aren't far behind. The Third, written in 1873 when Dvorák was living in considerable poverty in Prague, having left a regular job as an orchestral violist in order to devote himself to composition, is still little known. In the Sixth Symphony, as in other works from this and the earlier period, Dvorák had paid tribute to his model, Brahms. ‘Myung-Whun Chung takes an affectionately fleet-of-foot view of the Third Symphony … Chung’s reading is notable for its newly minted freshness and intelligent sense of proportion … these wonderfully accomplished artists bring genuine fire and exhilarating spring to Dvorák’s vernal inspiration. […] the Seventh is an interpretation of red-blooded fervor and rugged contrasts, whose dramatic impact is greatly heighted by the burnished glow of the VPO’s contribution, to say nothing of DG’s enormously ripe, close-knit sound. […] Dvorák releases don’t come much more stimulating than this.’ - (Symphonies Nos. 3 & 7) Gramophone, May 1997 ‘Drawing playing of infectious eagerness and disarming poise from his distinguished band, Myung-Whun Chung directs an exhilaratingly purposeful and memorably fresh account of the Sixth. […] DG’s sound is immensely ripe and full-bodied, this great orchestra’s burnished glow and mahogany-like timbre exceptionally well captured. […] Music-making of abundant temperament and tingling spontaneity from Chung and a radiant and intense VPO’ - (Symphonies Nos. 6 & 8) Gramophone, August 2000) CD 1: Tracks 1 – 4: Symphony No. 3 In E Flat Major, Op. 10 Tracks 5 – 8: Symphony No. 6 In D Major, Op. 60 CD 2: Tracks 1 – 4: Symphony No. 7 In D Minor, Op. Nicolai Ghiaurov - Russian Songs and Arias - Borodin, Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky etc. £9.25 ELQ4805557 0028948055579 CD2 AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL This 2CD set includes all his Russian recital material – in opera, art song and popular/folk song – for Decca, from the stunningly recorded 1962 and 1964 Russian arias with the LSO and Edward Downes; the recital of art songs by Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Glinka, Rubinstein and Dargomizhsky with his first wife Zlatina Ghiaurov. For thirty years, from 1960 to 1990, Nicolai Ghiaurov was an indispensable figure on the international operatic scene. His voluminous base, incisive delivery and imposing presence meant that he was in demand in every centre of opera. His range of roles stretched from Mozart and Rossini through Verdi and Puccini and many parts in the French nineteenth-century repertory to the rewarding roles written for basses in Russian opera. Avuncular and a great colleague on stage, Ghiaurov also made a record with a traditional Russian ensemble. It includes the song Stenka Razin, which later achieved mass popularity in its Seekers hit 'The Carnival Is Over'. ‘the Bulgarian bass shows himself a mighty master of the long, weighty phrase. Valery Gergiev & Vladimir Ashkenazy - Borodin: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2; Polovtsian Dances £6.50 ELQ4808946 0028948089468 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

This is the first international release of the Polovtsian Dances from ‘Prince Igor’. Borodin’s First Symphony was one of his earliest large-scale works and shows a great increase of technical skill over anything he had done before. Of course, it was a brave decision on Borodin’s part to undertake a symphony when he had little experience of large-scale form and none of orchestration. The influence of Schumann is rather apparent, although the example of Berlioz is more heeded in the imaginative and manyhued orchestration. The Second Symphony is one of Borodin’s masterpieces, finding the composer at the height of his capabilities. Given its strong musical ties with Prince Igor, outlined in Max Harrison’s booklet note, the filler on this CD – the ‘Polovtsian Dances’ from Prince Igor is particularly apt. What’s more, it’s the first international release of the Ashkenazy recording made in 1983 and coupled on the original LP with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. ‘The Rotterdam orchestra is afforded a richness and sonority, plus an overall bloom on strings, winds and brass alike, which is most appealing …’ - (Gergiev) Gramophone, August 1991 ‘excellently recorded … Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances are vividly done’ - (Ashkenazy) Gramophone, November 1983 Tracks: Alexander Borodin: Symphony No. 1 In E Flat Symphony No. 2 In B Polovtsian Dances From ‘Prince Igor’

The University of Maryland Chorus, National Symphony Orchestra & Antal Dorati – Dallapiccola: Il Prigioniero (The Prisoner) £6.50 ELQ4808781 0028948087815 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

Antal Dorati's pioneering performance of this work, recorded in 1974 as part of Decca's pioneering 'Headline' series, was the opera's first studio recording and here receives its first

release on CD. ‘Il prigioniero’ (The Prisoner) an opera in a prologue and one act, with both, music and libretto written by Luigi Dallapiccola, was first broadcast by the Italian radio station RAI on 1 December 1949. The work is based on the short story La torture par l'espérance ("Torture by Hope") by the French writer Auguste Villiers de l'Isle-Adam and from La Légende d'Ulenspiegel et de Lamme Goedzak by Charles de Coster. ‘Il Prigioniero’ is scored for a large orchestra, with choruses, organ and a group of brass and bells behind the scenes; but this orchestra is used economically. There are many passages which are assigned to solo instruments, arranged so as to give the impression of a chamber ensemble, particularly in places where the words are especially important. Set in Spain during the Inquisition, ‘Il prigioniero’ clearly has bearing on modern totalitarian methods of police cruely. “Maurizio Mazzieri sings the title role persuasively. This valuable record of an important opera is chiefly worthwhile thanks to the powerful interpretation of the conductor Antal Dorati who conveys its incidental moods within the total context of persecution. The Decca recording is spacious and savoury but not too rich.” - Gramophone, May 1975 Tracks: Luigi Dallapiccola:Il Prigioniero

Jonas Batstrand & Helge Kjekshus – Hjalmar Borgstrøm: Complete Works for Violin and Piano £8.49

PSC1237 7033662012374 CD SIMAX CLASSICAL

Although relatively unknown, the works of the 19th century Norwegian composer Hjalmar Borgstrøm are now being re-assessed. Violinist Jonas Båtstrand has already recorded his magnificent Violin Concerto, and with this CD Simax is releasing the complete chamber

music for violin and piano with the same violinist accompanied by Helge Kjekshus. Born in Norway in 1864, the composer Hjalmar Borgstrøm moved to Germany in 1890 where he studied and worked for the next 13 years. He returned to his homeland in 1903, and established himself as a predominant figure in Norwegian musical life both through his large-scale works and the authoritative literary and critical pieces that he wrote in the daily press for almost 20 years. He died in Oslo in 1925 at the age of 61. Hjalmar Borgstøm had a remarkable gift as a melody maker, and his reputation was confirmed with the opera ‘Thora from Rimol’ (PSC1230) and the Violin Concerto and symphonic poems (PSC1311). Borgstrøm’s Violin Sonata in G major, opus 19, was premiered in Christiania on 28 November 1906 with the violinist Gustav Lange and Amalie Borgstrøm at the piano. The Romanze in E major, opus 12, is dedicated to the legendary Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe, but whether or not he performed it is unknown. The three remaining violin pieces featured on the disc, Serenade, Elegie and Berceuse are preserved in manuscript in the National Library in Oslo. 600209 4053796002099 CD17 DOCUMENTS CLASSICAL

The legendary director of the Ballets Russes, Serge Diaghilev was among her admirers, and she is known to have maintained a close working relationship with Claude Debussy.
