Following 2014's lauded album Demon, Gazpacho are set to release their ninth studio album entitled Molok. This will be the sixth album in a series of concept records that

started with the critically acclaimed Night in 2007. Recorded at Krypton Sound Planet studios in Oslo, the self-produced album will be mixed by Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Meshuggah, Soilwork, Dimmu Borgir). Molok features guest musicians Stian Carstensen from the eclectic group Farmers Market on accordion and ethnic instruments, and music archaeologist Gjermund Kollveit playing the aga stone (the oldest known instrument ever to be featured on a CD). Ed Askew - Ask The Unicorn TAR054 5052442007579 CD TIN ANGEL FOLK £7.99 TAR054LP 5052442007586 LP TIN ANGEL FOLK £9.99

Ask the Unicorn is an "acid folk" masterpiece and one of the most singular releases from the infamous and historic ESP-Disk catalogue. It was recorded live to tape by

a 27 year-old Ed Askew in 1968. Since that time, the impossible-to-find record and the man have acquired a mythological status. This first-ever, fully-remastered

reissue has been awaited internationally for over 30 years. The LP version is on white vinyl.

Ed Askew never "disappeared." In the time following the recording, the Yale-educated hippie painter hitchhiked, taught at art school. And he has been working on new music in New York City for the past three decades. Following a re-discovery in the early Aughts, releases of classic recordings by De Stijl and Drag City, and tours with Bill Callahan and the Black Swans, Ed Askew is fully on the scene. In 2013, Tin Angel released his first studio album of new songs, For the World. The album was produced by Jerry David DeCicca and featured contributions from Sharon van Etten, Marc Ribot, and Mary Lattimore. Askew toured Europe in support of the record with his trio and Jordan Hunt. But ‘Ask the Unicorn’, one of the most unique and gripping records under the 1960's sun, remained a question and an item of critical and fan devotion. It is finally available on the white vinyl Askew originally requested. The cover for the UK release, reproduced here, is the positive of the US edition. It is a photo of the protests in Stamford following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was remastered from the original pressing by Jessica Thompson (Awesome Tapes from Africa, Tompkins Square) at the Magic Shop in NYC so that it sounds better than ever -- clearer, deeper, and louder. The insert features an original poster made Askew for one of this shows in New Haven, CT; and liner notes by Clifford Allen (Tiny Mix Tapes), an ESP-Disk scholar and friend of the band, who interviewed Askew over the course of several months. Ask the Unicorn is a wild album. Inspired by immersion in Lorca and Kurt Weil, Askew's live psych delivery blends "bitter and economical" with deep imagism. The tone of the Martin tiple, the 10-string ultra-resonant acoustic instrument for which Askew is known, is wiry and stark -- a true counterpoint to contemporary psychedelic music. Ask the Unicorn is also a very rare and important work by an openly gay songwriter in the 1960's. Ed will tour Europe with his trio in September in support of this release and in anticipation of Ed's forthcoming second studio album of new songs, featuring Josephine Foster, on Tin Angel Records. Tracks: Fancy That / Peter And David / Marigolds / Mr. Dream / Red Woman - Letter To England / The Garden / May Blossoms Be Praised / 9 - Song / Love Is Everyone / Ask The Unicorn

Jarrod Lawson – Jarrod Lawson At The BBC £6.50 DOMELP333 5034093516235 12”EP DOME RECORDS SOUL/R&B/JAZZ

Jarrod Lawson releases a mini-album of four songs recorded at the historic BBC Maida Vale studios last year and broadcast on the Gilles Peterson Worldwide

show on BBC 6 Music. The release coincides with Jarrod and his band's third European tour of the year, which concludes at London's O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on November 14. The mini-album, pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl, features one new Lawson composition "Soul Symphony", together with a long version of "Everything I Need" from his debut album and two cover songs. They are Bilal's "When Will You Call?" and the Anthony Hamilton R&B hit "Point Of It All" - described as "a dope cover" by Hamilton himself. The line-up is Lawson on vocals and grand piano, Chance Hayden on guitar and Farnell Newton on flugelhorn. Since his UK live debut at London's Ronnie Scotts Club last October, Lawson has enjoyed a meteoric rise. Voted Soul Artist of the Year at the 2015 Jazz FM Awards, and runner-up for Album of the Year at the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards, he has sold out two nights at London's Jazz Café. London's Evening Standard reviewer called him "the biggest soul-jazz sensation for years" - and also played festivals around Europe this summer, including Love Supreme, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Vienna Jazz Festival, Jazzopen in Stuttgart and the Pori jazz Festival in Finland. In Holland Lawson has broadcast live a number of times on 3FM and Radio 6 - and entered the Dutch album chart with his self-titled debut - while in the UK he has received heavy exposure on Jazz FM, 6 Music and has performed live on BBC 1Xtra and BBC Radio London. In France he has performed in session on TSF Jazz. Tracks: Soul Symphony / When Will You Call? / Point Of It All / Everything I Need

Thomas Stronen – Time Is A Blind Guide £9.49 4754115 602547541154 CD ECM JAZZ

‘Time Is A Blind Guide’ is both the title of Thomas Strønen’s album and the name of his new Norwegian-British ensemble. In contrast to Food (his band with English saxophonist Iain Ballamy

and guests) and its electronic soundscapes, this is an all-acoustic group which plays what its drummer-leader-composer calls “melodic music with a twist”.

Its melodies unfurl sinuously over shifting rhythmic patterns. The ensemble was built to include a number of overlapping musical sub-groups. “There is a kind of enhanced piano trio at the centre of Time Is A Blind Guide,” says Strønen. “And there is a string group with violin and cello and bass as well as a drum ensemble with me and Siv Øyunn Kjenstad and Steinar Mossige…”. The two percussionists often assert strong and solid grooves, allowing Strønen to play freely on top of the rhythms and to interact dynamically with the outstanding young English pianist Kit Downes, who makes his ECM debut here. The band (its name derives from a literary source, “Time is a blind guide” being the first sentence in Canadian author Anne Michaels’s 1996 novel, Fugitive Pieces) was formed rather spontaneously, following an invitation from BBC Radio 3 presenter Fiona Talkington. An early supporter of the Strønen/Iain Ballamy group ‘Food’, she commissioned Thomas to write music for a combination of Norwegian and British musicians for Conexions, a concert series she was curating in Oslo. The group played concerts over a two year period before going to the studio - Oslo’s Rainbow Studio - in July 2015, with Strønen and Sun Chung producing. ‘Time Is A Blind Guide’ is one of two ECM albums issued this season featuring the music of Thomas Strønen. The other is Food’s ‘This Is Not A Miracle’, which is released on 6 November. Personnel: Thomas Strønen (drums and percussion), Kit Downes (piano), Håkon Aase (violin); Ole Morten Vågan (double bass), Lucy Railton (cello), Siv Øyunn Kjenstad (percussion), Steinar Mossige (percussion) Press: Reviews in Guardian, Independent on Sunday, Financial Times, Jazzwise, Jazz Journal, Record Collector, Mojo, Irish Times, Scotsman & websites including Marlbank, Jazz Views etc Radio: Airplay on BBC Radio 3 (Jazz on 3, Late Junction); BBC 6Music (Freak Zone), Jazz FM (Helen Mayhew, Mike Chadwick); UK Jazz Radio; RTÉ Lyric FM (Blue of the Night) Tracks: The Stone Carriers / Baka / Tide / Everything Disappears I / Pipa / I Don't Wait For Anyone / The Drowned City / Lost Souls / Everything Disappears II (Ode to JT) / Time Is A Blind Guide / As We Wait For Time / Simples Also Available:

Kim Kashkashian, Sarah Rothenberg, Houston Chamber Choir - Rothko Chapel: Morton Feldman, Erik Satie, John Cage £9.49 4811796 028948117963 CD ECM NEW SERIES CLASSICAL

The album ‘Rothko Chapel’ addresses a network of musical relationships and inspirations, taking as its main focus Morton Feldman’s work named for the Houston,

Texas multi-faith chapel built to house Mark Rothko’s site-specific paintings. Feldman considered that his ‘Rothko Chapel’ lay “between categories, between time and space, between painting and music”, and described the score as his “canvas”. Amongst his most important influences were abstract painters, his friend Mark Rothko prominent amongst them. (Rothko, for his part, yearned to “raise painting to the level of music and poetry”.) Feldman was also liberated by the freewheeling example of John Cage’s work. “The main influence from Cage was a green light,'' Feldman said. ''It was permission, the freedom to do what I wanted.'' Cage, the most relentless of 20th century experimentalists, didn’t acknowledge what he called an “ABC model of ‘influence’” but always had a special fondness for Satie, a musical inventor of good-humoured originality with whom he could identify. Feldman’s piece was first played in the chapel in 1972. On the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Rothko Chapel in 2011, a concert was held there bringing together works of Feldman, Cage and Satie. This programme was reprised for the present CD with recordings made at other Houston locations - Rice University (Cage, Satie) and the Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater (Feldman). Leading viola player Kim Kashkashian negotiates the subtle, glowing textures of Feldman’s planes of sound, joined by Sarah Rothenberg on celeste, and supported by percussion and choir. Rothenberg, on piano, plays Satie’s Gnossiennes and Cage’s Inner Landscape, and the Houston Chamber Choir sings Cage’s Four, Five and more, illuminating this rarely heard choral music.

Personnel: Kim Kashkashian (viola), Sarah Rothenberg (piano, celeste), Steven Schick (percussion), Sonja Bruzauskas (mezzo-soprano), Lauren Snouffer (soprano), Houston Chamber Choir, Robert Simpson (conductor)

The Hilliard Ensemble, Muriel Cantoreggi, Genevieve Strosser, Jurg Dahler – Holliger: Machaut-Transkriptionen £9.49 4765121 028947651215 CD ECM NEW SERIES CLASSICAL Swiss composer Heinz Holliger’s Machaut-Transkriptionen comprises a spacious cycle of pieces written over a ten year period beginning in 2001. An imaginative re-investigation of the work of the great 14th century French composer-poet Guillaume de Machaut, it is

scored for four voices and three violas. Note-for-note transcriptions of Machaut give way to Holliger’s increasingly creative refractions of the music. In Heinz Holliger’s works, the succinct term ‘transcriptions’ conceals multi-layered variants of the enigmatic source material and the most subtle diversification of sound, using the technical possibilities of the 21st century. In the complete, almost one-hour cycle, Machaut’s original compositions, performed a cappella, have been interwoven with Holliger’s variations. Four of the transcriptions have been arranged for three violas alone. The traditional monophonic Lay VII, Amours doucement me tente, however, appears in a new four-part vocal setting, and in the concluding Complainte from ‘Remede de Fortune’ the singing voices join the violas. As Holliger notes, his in-depth study of Machaut opened up new vistas for his compositional activity and his admiration for the source material is mirrored in the outstanding performances of the violists and singers. The Machaut-Transkriptionen proves a perfect vehicle for the Hilliard Ensemble’s set skills as interpreters of both old and new music, and this recording, made in 2010 in Zurich, captures the vocal group at the heights of its powers. Their own affinity for Machaut is also documented on their album of his Motets (4724022). Personnel: The Hilliard Ensemble (David James, countertenor; Rogers Covey-Crump, tenor; Steven Harrold, tenor; Gordon Jones, baritone), Muriel Cantoreggi (viola), Geneviève Strosser (viola), Jürg Dähler (viola)

Various Artists – Cold And Bitter Tears – The Songs Of Ted Hawkins £7.99 CSCCD1123 8713762011239 CD CONTINENTAL SONG CITY COUNTRY

Cold and Bitter Tears: The Song of Ted Hawkins, marks the first all star tribute album to the soulful Venice Beach street performer, a legend overseas later in his lifetime but a

songwriter largely overlooked in the States. Hawkins simply sang like songs were stamped on his heart at birth.

High watermarks on the new record such as "Big Things" (James McMurtry), "Cold and Bitter Tears" (Kasey Chambers), "Sorry You're Sick" (Mary Gauthier), "Who Got My Natural Comb" (Shinyribs) and several other classics. Hawkins himself backs the point with the album's hidden track, the moving unreleased demo "Great New Year." The Mississippi native, who died January 1, 1995 after a hardscrabble life and brief autumnal rise in popularity, might be gone but he's clearly not forgotten. Local Americana power trio including singer-songwriter Kevin Russell (Shinyribs, The Gourds), artist manager Jenni Finlay (James McMurtry) and writer Brian T. Atkinson (author of I'll Be Here in the Morning: The Songwriting Legacy of Townes Van Zandt) have lovingly co-produced Cold and Bitter Tears over the past year . He died at 58 years old the following New Year's Day as his star finally threatened to rise. "At the time of his death, Hawkins remained the greatest singer you've never heard," the Los Angeles Times obituary read. "Hawkins clearly was transported somewhere else as he sang, and when he became aware of the audience, he seemed dazed: [Everyone] applauding wildly, some in tears from the sheer, sad beauty of his songs." The Cox Family - Gone Like the Cotton £7.99 116613755302 888072375536 CD ROUNDER COUNTRY The Cox Family, widely known for their GRAMMY®-winning collaboration with Alison Krauss, ‘I

Know Who Holds Tomorrow’, as well as their ravishing performance of "I Am Weary, Let Me Rest" from the smash-hit soundtrack O Brother, Where Art Thou?, make a triumphant return

with ‘Gone Like the Cotton’, an album seventeen years in the making and featuring Alison Krauss (who also produces the album), Sonny Landreth, Ron Block and Sam Bush.

‘Gone Like The Cotton’ is a stunning work, of which Rolling Stone's Stephen Betts writes, "Like the Cox Family's previous efforts, Gone Like the Cotton is built on a solid country-music foundation with sensational harmony singing and inspired song selection... the Coxes haven't missed a beat, a tasty instrumental lick, or a sterling vocal performance in spite of the nearly two decades between the album's late 20th-century start and glorious 2015 finish." Producer Alison Krauss reflects, "I can't remember when I've been lucky enough to be witness to a story where such generosity and talent come together so perfectly. I've had the time of my life getting to work on the record again. The Cox Family hold a place in my heart like no other, and listening to them for all of us is like coming home." tours North North America on a regular basis and in fact this album is released by Red House Records, and licensed to Greentrax for the UK. Eire and Europe.

A well known artist on the Scottish traditional music scene Archie Fisher for many years presented 'Travelling Folk' on BBC Radio Scotland. Ian Prowse - Companeros £6.99 LEARPHOLL0001 5060155721989 CD IRL INDIE

***Digital download distributed by Proper***

Ian Prowse, often called the "Scouse Springsteen", is best known for his work as main man with the groups, Pele (1990s) and the 7-piece group, Amsterdam (2000s).

One of his most famous songs, Amsterdam's Does This Train Stop On Merseyside, was a huge favourite of the late DJ John Peel - he featured the song on his last ever Festive Fifty and it has been well documented that it often reduced him to tears on air. The song has gone on to be covered by many others, including Christy Moore, Miles Hunt and Ian McNabb.

Radio 2's Janice Long played Amsterdam's first single 21 shows in a row. Ian has a long friendship & working relationship with Elvis Costello, he played with Amsterdam on Jonathan Ross' TV show, as well as duetting with Ian on the Liverpool #1s Project on EMI.

In recent years, Ian Prowse has completed a couple of degrees, "just for the hell of it" and the album is, in part, inspired by his degree in Modern History and Masters in Irish music, for which he wrote his thesis on Irish Music. He has also become a father for the first time.

Orwell - Exposition Universelle £7.99 F0128 3700409814297 CD FOLKWIT RECORDS INDIE

Orwell lead by Jérôme Didelot attracted high praise in 2009 with their first UK release 'Le génie humain' with glowing reviews in Mojo - "...an exquisite and subtle album.", The Sunday Times -

"...delightful.", and The Express - "...truly irresistible pop." to name a few.

Quite an achievement for an album sung almost exclusively in French and a reflection of Didelot's immense talent for crafting that sophisticated intellectualized pop paralleled by the likes of Stereo Lab and the High Llamas.

The new album 'Exposition Universelle' proves yet again that this was no fluke. Another slice of luscious orchestral pop with songs that draw you in with each listen. Released simultaneously worldwide by a collective of no less than 5 independent labels, Folkwit Records are proud to represent this potential indie pop classic in the UK.

Hot 8 Brass Band – Vicennial: 20 Years Of The Hot 8 Brass Band TRUCD318 5060205156372 CD TRU THOUGHTS JAZZ £7.99 TRULP318 5060205156389 LP2 TRU THOUGHTS JAZZ £10.99

New Orleans' Hot 8 Brass Band toast their 20th Anniversary in typical roof-raising style, with a series of releases and live dates to celebrate this significant and incredibly hard-won milestone.

At the centre is 'Vicennial – 20 Years Of The Hot 8 Brass Band', a special album mixing brand new tracks with newly recorded classic Hot 8 material, this jubilant LP finds the band on the

form of their lives.

One of the great New Orleans acts, Hot 8 have pushed on through a barely imaginable series of trials. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the separate deaths of four of their band members, and the horror of trumpeter Terrell "Burger" Batiste losing his legs in a car crash, conspired to test these men almost to breaking point. They march together and they play their music - a rambunctious yet elegant and super-tight mix of jazz, funk and hip hop - not merely as though, but because their lives depend on it.

The recording sessions for "Vicennial..." saw Hot 8 Brass Band welcoming former members back into the studio, as well as featuring performances from family members of their fallen bandmates (from siblings through to grandparents), giving even more meaning and poignancy to each track, whether new or a revision of one of their classics.

Freddy Randall - Before And After £7.99 LACD343 5017116534324 CD LAKE JAZZ

Freddy Randall is one of the great stalwarts of the British Traditional Scene. He formed his first band in 1949 which recorded initially recorded for a small private label, then the small specialist

Tempo label, but was very soon snapped up by the major Parlophone label in 1951. Unlike most of the British bands at the time Freddy based his band on the Chicago/Dixieland style and soon earned a reputation as one of the best bands around led on by Freddy's fiery trumpet lead.

Due to health problems Freddy retired from the Jazz scene in 1958. He returned briefly in 1963 before leaving again. He reappeared in 1971. The 'before' and 'after' of the title of this CD refers to the recordings: the first 7 were the last recordings Freddy made for the Parlophone label in 1958; the 'after' tracks (8-16) refer to his second return and come from an album by Britain's Greatest Jazz Band. A sort of 'fantasy Jazz Band created by two fans was put together for a short tour, but proved successful that, with one personnel change, became the basis for Freddy's finest band, The Freddy Randall - Dave Shepherd Jazz All Stars. Freddy made his last records in 1982 and retired shortly afterwards. The musicians on this CD represent some of cream of British Jazz: George Chisholm, Brian Lemon and Dave Shepherd.

Let Spin - Let Go £7.99 FP023 5070000037141 CD EFPI RECORDS JAZZ

Let Spin consists of Moss Feed (guitar), Ruth Goller (bass), Chris Williams (saxophone) and Finlay Panter (drums). Their spectacular eponymous 2014 debut announced them as “a

significant new UK jazz force” (John Fordham, The Guardian) and follow-up ‘Let Go’ is the album that confirms them as one of the most exciting new bands in Europe.

Featuring members of Led Bib, Beats & Pieces Big Band, Melt Yourself Down and Moss Project, Let Spin is a band brimming with an individual and collective confidence. Recorded after a period of extensive touring, ‘Let Go’ is the electrifying result of 18-months of writing and rehearsing, and fully delivers on the band’s significant promise as four powerful musical voices come together to forge a band sound that is uniquely their own. ‘Let Go’ is a record that really highlights Let Spin as a band with a very cohesive group sound, but also a band that is not afraid to make the most of their individual voices; a band confident enough to explore both individual and group aesthetics in composition and performance. It is this hard earned group empathy that gives them the rare ability to move between thrashy punk, wistful reflection and more complex, quirky territory so effortlessly. Philip Clouts Quartet - Umoya £8.49 ODRCD503 0859689005031 CD ODRADEK RECORDS JAZZ The music of pianist-composer Philip Clouts combines jazz and world music influences, both of which have been integral throughout his musical life. Philip Clouts is drawn to the freedom of

jazz and to the rootedness of world music, genres which bring to his compositions both rhythmic vitality and stylistic diversity.

Born in Cape Town, Philip Clouts has been particularly influenced by the immediacy of South African music. Umoya is the Zulu word for 'life force', and can also betranslated as 'soul' and 'spirit'. This word has become the title of one of Philip's songs, and of this whole album. Yet the album is a melting-pot of wide-ranging influences: North African Sufi music, with its trance-like bass, Nigerian dance rhythms stemming from the Afrobeat style of Fela Kuti, European folk music from Italy and Romania, gospel, and, of course, jazz. Philip Clouts has performed at venues including Ronnie Scott's, Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and the Womad and Glastonbury Festivals, receiving praise for his "consummate musicianship" (Musician Magazine). He is joined by acclaimed jazz musicians, saxophonist Samuel Eagles (who has been mentored by the likes of Jean Toussaint), Alex Keen on bass guitar, and Dave Ingamells on drums. Tracks: Lila / Dreamy Driving / Walking In Starlight / Meandering / Taranto / Umoya / Amor / Direction South

The Kora Band - New Cities £7.99 WR4667 5052442005599 CD WHIRLWIND RECORDINGS JAZZ

The Kora Band, an ensemble which integrates the uniquely entrancing timbre of the kora - a traditional 21-string harp from West Africa - into a jazz context, present their third release

'New Cities' and first for Whirlwind. The album showcases a suite composed by pianist and bandleader Andrew Oliver. The material explores the intersection between contemporary jazz and one of its main ancestors in West African Mandinka music, exploring the boundaries between these two musical cultures and honouring the jazz tradition of combining disparate musical elements into a vibrant and coherent whole. Each song takes an element from a traditional piece, deconstructs it, and uses the resulting material as the basis for a new composition. The original pieces range from common tunes such as "Kaira," made popular in the 1950's and "Mami Wata," originally a highlife guitar piece from Ghana which entered the Malian and Guinean repertoire in the post-colonial era, to obscure tunes such as "Fayinkunko," dedicated to a mostly forgotten Gambian patron. Personnel: Andrew Oliver (piano), Kane Mathis (kora, vocals), Chad McCullough (trumpet, flugelhorn), Brady Millard-Kish (double & electric bass), Mark DiFlorio (drums, calabash), Lee Elderton (clarinet - 3,6) Tracks: The Contract / Biere La Gazelle / 5 ans d'effort / Teriyaa / Specialists in Some Styles / Slip Coach (for Chet) / New Cities / Old Countries

The Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet – You've Got To Dig It To Dig It, You Dig? £6.15 JITCD1564 5032396015646 CD JAZZIZIT RECORDS JAZZ

Following on from the British Jazz Award-winning 'Joyriding' - which received the Best CD award in 2012 - this CD from the Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet is set to be another hit! Featuring pianist David Newton, bassist Geoff Gascoyne, drummer Sebastiaan De Krom and special guest

trumpeter Martin Shaw. 'You've Got to Dig It to Dig It, You Dig?' Is rather a long and unconventional title for a CD but it came from a fantastic list of advice courtesy of legendary jazz pianist, Thelonius Monk. Saxophonist, Steve Lacy, transcribed the list in 1960. In the middle of many wonderful lines of unexpected and idiosyncratic phrases, one stood out - "You've Got To Dig It To Dig It, You Dig?" This inspired a melody to fit the phrase and led Derek to compose the title track. These and other wise words guided the feel of the whole album. The album features six new and diverse compositions by Nash (from the plaintive "Winter Solstice" to the Mulligan/Baker styling of "I'm Getting Temperamental Over You" to the foot-tapping, boogaloo of the title track) two from bassist Geoff Gascoyne, an inspired arrangement of "Secret Love" by pianist David Newton and a beautiful reworking, by Nash, of Russell Ferrante's "Homecoming". Tracks: Secret Love / Let Some Things Go By / You've Got To Dig It To Dig It, You Dig? / Time Lag / Swing Thing / Home Coming / Vertigo / I'm Getting Tempermental Over You / Winter Solstice / Keep It To Yourself / Morning Glory

CRAM240 876623007210 CD CRAMMED DISCS POP On 'You're the Waves', Maïa Vidal offers a personal take on an eternal subject matter.

The love story, with all its fluctuations and shifts, its ebb and flow, falling in love, being in love, falling out of love.

Overflowing with her trademark, soaring melodies, this is the young American singer/songwriter/musician's most accomplished album to date, an electronic pop opus which was brilliantly produced by Maïa herself, co-produced by Giuliano Cobelli, and mixed by Van Rivers (Glasser, Fever Ray, Matthew Dear). Maïa played most of the instruments (keyboards, autoharp, violin, guitar, beat programming), with contributions by Giuliano Cobelli (trumpet, percussion, beats). All these ingredients, alongside Maïa's moving, humourous and distinctive lyrics, contribute to making "You're The Waves" a unique, sensual and fresh album. RPUT16CD 5060091558847 CD REQUIEM FOR A TWISTER ROCK £7.99 RPUT16 5060091557338 LP REQUIEM FOR A TWISTER ROCK £9.99

One year after their Rock'n Folk (Fr) and Maximum Rock'n Roll (USA) acclaimed debut single 'Part Time Punk', Parisian punk band Cheap Riot returns with their debut

long player, 'Ballroom Portraits'. Sharping their new songs while heavily touring in mainland Europe, sharing the bill with bands like Hinds or Cosmonauts, Cheap Riot recorded this first album in a week with French analog wizard Lo' Spider. If the band will certainly not play at your prom, 'Ballroom Portraits' is showing us red-hot catchy songs, remembering us class of '77. As any good punk record should be, 'Ballroom Portraits' is heavily political, sarcastic and raging, but they never forget to bring up the melodies during the rampage. “This is totally badass” - Maximum Rock'n Roll Tracks: Illness / Night Bus / Yasmine / In Between / Next Election / Blackout / Harry / Electricity / Blow / Boredom

On his debut Soundway Records release, multi-instrumentalist Dexter Story distils his diverse background in soul, funk, jazz and folk idioms into his own unique and worldly voice.

Borrowing from Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Somalia, and Kenya, this collection of East African-influenced music is a testament to Story's decades of dedication to artistic excellence.

"Wondem' was written and recorded in Story's personal studio in downtown Los Angeles and one of his closest associates, producer, composer and musician, Carlos Niño co-produced the record. It was mixed at Niño's home studio.

In addition Story worked with an array of collaborators on the record. Renowned multi-instrumentalist Miguel Atwood-Ferguson featured on the percussive track 'Mowa' and international producer and artist Mark de Clive-Lowe plays piano and synthesizer on a number of songs, in particular on 'Yene Konjo', where his acoustic piano playing there was originally inside of the main section of the song but Story felt it was so beautiful that he moved it to its own highlighted place. 'Acabou Chorare' is the second album from 'Novos Baianos', or 'New Bahians', who formed in Bahia, Brazil in the 1960's. They are considered to be one of the most important and

evolutionary groups in Brazilian music.

**Voted No. 1 in the 'Top 100 Brazilian Albums Ever' in Rolling Stone Magazine, Brazil **

The unique sound of this record is a result of the fusion of samba, MPB, rock 'n' roll and bossa nova, and strong influences from Joao Gilberto, who frequently played with the group, and bossa nova legend Gilberto Gil. The album was written by Moraes Moreira, Luiz Galvão, Jorginho Gomes, Assis Valente, Pepeu Gomes and Paulinho Boca de Cantor.

After recording, the group moved to a communal house outside Rio, where Galvão apparently shot video footage of the group his Super-8 video recorder, some of which is featured in this documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6J0bg9MdMo

Baby Consuelo was a member of the group – she went on to have a very successful solo career. In 1969, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso invited Pepeu to accompany them in their farewell show before their exile, the emotional 'Barra 69' concert.

Tony Palmer - The Space Movie (Remastered) £8.99

TPDVD193 5060230868110 DVD TONY PALMER DOCUMENTARY

Newly restored and (finally) complete edition of Mike Oldfield and Tony Palmer's The Space Movie.

This classic film was originally commissioned by London Weekend Television and Virgin in 1979 to mark the 10th Anniversary of the first landing on the moon, July 21st 1969. A recent discovery of a print in mint condition has enabled us to issue the film in a sparkling new (and complete!) edition. At a Gala Screening in the Egyptian Cinema in Hollywood in 2008, the film was introduced by Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk upon the moon. He said: "It gives me enormous pleasure, and a thrill, to be able to introduce Tony Palmer's remarkable film about our space adventures. I say remarkable because at the time it was made, 1978/9, very little of the footage you are about to see had ever been seen in public, images which are now so familiar as to be truly iconic. But it was Tony who used them first, and we are very pleased that he did, even if he did construct the longest take-off in history! I still get a chill hearing some of the talk-back which, like the footage, NASA had provided for Tony to use. When the rocket takes off, boy is that a roller-coaster ride, bumpy as hell. So when you hear my voice saying "little bit of shaking there", you'll know what I mean! So thank you Tony for what you did." The distinguished film critic Alexander Walker said after the first screenings: "The best British film screened at Cannes (in 1980) was Mike Oldfield and Tony Palmer's The Space Movie, with unique footage from NASA and music by Mike Oldfield. Palmer's film combines both in a wonderful, at times profoundly moving, tribute to the astronauts from Cape Kennedy. The film includes one of the finest space launches ever collated, with footage that is unbelievably spectacular. Full marks to director Tony Palmer. The result is breathtaking, beautiful and brilliant."

Steam In Britain Settle & Carlisle £6.80 SB7902 5060246779028 DVD WIENERWORLD DOCUMENTARY

The Settle & Carlisle Railway soars across the Pennines on lofty viaducts with a mystique unrivalled by any other railway. Today it's grandeur recreates the railway's greatest days when

steam was king. Steam locomotives from the mighty "Mallard" and the world famous "Flying Scotsman", "Duchess of Hamilton" and "Evening Star" to the humble "Black 5's" still thunder through the mountains and tunnels, over Ribblehead, through Kirkby Stephen and Langwathby, from Settle to Carlisle and back.

Steam In Britain East Anglia £6.80 SB7903 5060246779035 DVD WIENERWORLD DOCUMENTARY

The East Coast of England was served by the railways that came together in 1923 to form the

London and North Eastern Railway, one of the greatest railway companies of all time. Renowned for its famous named trains such as the "Flying Scotsman", the "Silver Jubilee", and the "Queen of Scots", amongst others, the L.N.E.R. built a succession of legendary Pacific steam locomotives to the designs of Sir Nigel Gresley, many of which were named after racehorses. By contrast, the L.N.E.R.'s railways in East Anglia were built to serve a land that has changed little over the years, and the railways reflected this timeless appeal. In this programme we see, in images recorded over the last decade, the survivors of the L.N.E.R. era still at work on the lines for which they were built, ranging from London's King's Cross to Retford, and across the Fens into deepest Norfolk on the North Sea coast at Weybourne, all still evoking Steam in Britain in East Anglia and Eastern Britain.

Souvenirs Of Bucovina: A Romanian Survival Guide £8.84 MVD7386D 760137738695 DVD WIENERWORLD DOCUMENTARY

Souveniers Of Bucovina: A Romanian Survival Guide' is a two-hour documentary about the region of Bucovina which is located on the northern slopes of the central Eastern Carpathians and adjoining plains. At various points over the past two millennia, has been conquered and controlled by the Romans, Goths, Huns, Turks, Austro-Hungarians, Nazis,

Soviets, and others; and which, since World War II, has been split between Northern Romania and Southern Ukraine.

The film is divided into six parts: the first examines such enduring treasures of the Bucovina region as its pottery, its native dances, and the Eastern Orthodox monasteries built in the 16th Century by Moldavian princes and decorated with colorful exterior frescoes; the second introduces multiple generations of a unique Bucovinan family; the third explores some of the last remaining synagogues and cemeteries of the once-dominant Jewish population which was largely killed off or deported during and after the Second World War; the fourth explores the Roma (gypsy) population which was enslaved for 500 years and which (like the Jewish population) was transported to death camps during World War II; the fifth examines ongoing Bucovinan and Romanian survival skills and compares life under Communism from the 1940s through the 1980s with life under Capitalism and democracy today; and the sixth explores the outbreak of color in Romanian society since the democratic revolution of 1989.

Hawaiian Rainbow/Kumu Hula: Keepers Of A Culture £8.84 MVD7494D 760137749493 DVD WIENERWORLD DOCUMENTARY

In the 1970s, Hawaii underwent what is known as the Second Hawaiian Renaissance, a period of renewed interest in native Hawaiian history, language, crafts, music, and dance. Out of that

period of cultural resurgence came enormous social, cultural, and political excitement and activity which, to a great extent, continues to this day.

Hawaiian Rainbow, a 1987 film about Hawaiian music, examines Hawaii's traditional chants, percussion, ukulele, slack-key and steel guitar, male and female falsetto, and lush vocal harmonies, all of them accompanied by authentic Hawaiian hula. Kumu Hula: Keepers Of A Culture, a 1989 film about Hawaiian dance, explores Hawaiian dance traditions going back to 500AD, when Polynesians arrived in the islands. Those traditions have been passed on from generation to generation by kahuna (priests and sages) and kumu hula (master teachers). Gil Scott-Heron - Black Wax MVD7495D 760137749592 DVD WIENERWORLD SOUL/R&B/ DOCUMENTARY £8.84 MVD7496BR 760137749691 BLUR WIENERWORLD SOUL/R&B/ DOCUMENTARY £10.21 Black Wax is a musical-political entertainment film produced and directed by Robert Mugge in 1982. It was the first American film to be fully funded by Britain's then-brand-new Channel 4

Television and also likely the first film to use Steadicam from first frame to last. Black Wax centers on the late African American poet-singer-songwriter Gil Scott-Heron - the man Melody Maker called "the most dangerous musician alive" and many dubbed the forefather of rap music - and his 10-piece Midnight Band. It was filmed entirely on location in Washington, D.C., primarily at the Wax Museum Nightclub (now defunct). Songs performed by the band include such potent political numbers as "Winter in America," "Alien," "Johannesburg," "Storm Music," "Waiting for the Axe to Fall," "Gun," and "'B' Movie" (a scathing analysis of how and why Ronald Reagan was elected President of the United States). Between songs, Mr. Scott-Heron is shown reciting his equally powerful poems ("Paint it Black," "Black History," "Billy Green is Dead," The H2O-Gate Blues," and "Whitey on the Moon"), leading the camera on a unique tour of Washington, D.C.

Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko - Scriabin Symphony No 3, Symphony No 4 - The Poem Of Ecstasy £9.25 LWC1088 7090020181004 CD LAWO CLASSICS CLASSICAL

Vasily Petrenko and Oslo Philharmonic launch the first instalment in complete cycle of Scriabin symphonies. The new album marks the start of a creative partnership between

the Oslo Philharmonic and LAWO Classics. Scriabin's deep immersion in esoteric philosophy and related spiritual awakening became integral to his art. The Russian composer's initial conservative musical language evolved in the early 1900s and opened up to daring harmonic territories. Petrenko notes "At first the orchestra was a little unsure about his [Scriabin] music, but they worked very hard on the Symphony No.3 and the 'Poem of Ecstasy' and are now big enthusiasts for Scriabin." Ingrid Røynesdal, the Oslo Philharmonic's Chief Executive Officer said of the recording: "Vasily Petrenko is passionate about Scriabin. His music especially suits the Oslo Philharmonic, with its rich string sound, fantastic woodwind soloists and uniquely strong brass section." Tracks: Alexander Scriabin: Symphony No 3: Introduction Luttes (Struggles) Voluptés (Delights) Jeu Divin (Divine Play) La Poeme De L'extase (The Poem Of Ecstasy), Op. 54, "Symphony No. 4"

Purcell Consort Of Voices / Grayston Burgess – The Tudors: To Entertain A King – Music For Henry VIII And His Court £6.50 ELQ4804866 0028948048663 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

The early years of Henry VIII's reign were a time of ostentatious pageantry, ceremonial and courtly entertainments of all kinds. Royal entries, tournaments, funerals, executions, banquets,

coronations, christenings were all ceremonial occasions in which music had a function. Very little actual ceremonial music has survived; most of it was probably never written down. But many songs and dances do survive from the lavish court entertainments, masques, 'Mayings' and so forth, which distinguished the young King's court and diminished his privy purse. Part of an ongoing mini-series on Eloquence, 'The Tudors' presents a series of recordings of the music of this dynasty. ‘There is plenty to delight the ear on this record […] The songs … are very good music indeed, and anyone who has not yet come across Pastime with good company, or I am a jolly foster should make their acquaintance forthwith, for their tunes are full of vigour.’ - Gramophone, June 1968 Tracks: Cornysh - Blow thy horn, hunter Barbireau - En frolyk weson Henry VIII - Taunder naken Cornysh - Ah Robin, gentle Robin Anonymous - Three Dances – Basse danse: Il me fuffit · Galliard: Rocha el fuso · Pavane: Vegnando da Bologna Richafort - Chanson: Demon triste desplaisir Anonymous - Instrumental fancy Cornysh - Adieu! mes amours Isaac - La my Anonymous - I am a jolly foster Busnois - Fortune esperée Anonymous - Two Dances – La morisque · Passo e mezzo / Where be ye, my love? / My Lady Carey’s Dumpe / Galliard: Il buratto Daggere - Downberry down Anonymous - Henry VIII’s Pavane / Two Dances – Galliard: La traditora · Allemande prince / Hey trolly lolly lo / The Antyck Henry VIII - Pastime with good company

Royal Concertgebeow/Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, Monteux - Schubert: Symphony No. 8. Rosamunde Excerpts £6.50 ELQ4808905 0028948089055 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

The name of Pierre Monteux inevitably brings Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps to mind. He conducted the notorious first performance in Paris in 1913, which degenerated into a

brawl broken up by the police. This historic event has slightly overshadowed other Ballets Russes commissions, such as Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé and Debussy's Jeux, which

were first performed under this French conductor, who was born in Paris in 1875 and died as an American citizen in 1964.

Record enthusiasts with long memories will recall various works by these two composers recorded by Monteux, particularly with the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom, when well into his eighties, he had recently signed a renewable 25-year contract! But to categorise Monteux as a specialist in French music would be unfair. It was a label he himself derided, for his repertory encompassed the central German/Austrian nineteenth-century repertoire and also recorded - with the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra - a highly sought-after cycle of the Beethoven symphonies. His interpretation of Schubert's 'Unfinished' (recorded in 1963 for Philips) is very romantically-centred, the extremely leisurely tempi for the two movements creating something of a timeless quality. Three excerpts from Rosamunde were recorded six years earlier for Decca. ‘beautiful performances […] the playing [of the Vienna Philharmonic] is distinguished by the lovely string tone and the sensitive woodwind playing’ - Gramophone, March 1973 [Rosamunde] Tracks: Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 8 In B Minor, D. 759 ‘Unfinished’ Music From ‘Rosamunde’

London Symphony Orchestra, Pierre Monteux - Ravel: Ma Mere L’Oye; Bolero; La Valse; Pavane; Rapsodie Espagnole £6.50 ELQ4808890 0028948088904 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

Pierre Monteux is the ideal interpreter of Ravel, that great teaser and lover of mystification. Born less than a month apart in 1875, the two men were bound to come together in pre-war

Paris, which was such fertile ground for artistic novelty. In 1964 he made what was to become his final recording with the LSO - a disc of Ravel's music for Philips of Boléro, La Valse and Ma mère l'Oye. Three years earler he recorded Pavane pour une infante défunte and Rapsodie espagnole for Decca. The performances reveal a perfect harmony of mind between conductor and composer; Monteux spoke Ravel's language in everyday life. ‘Monteux plays these luscious scores with a full awareness of their aloof and almost lunar romanticism […] Monteux plays the exquisite score of Ma mère l’Oye with complete understanding.’ - Gramophone, May 1965 (Boléro, La Valse, Ma mère l’Oye] ‘All portamentos (where marked) rise and fall beautifully – and together – under the fingers; you will also hear a great range of vibrato […] and if you are unable to succumb totally to the maximum vibrato and extraordinary textures as Monteux leads us through the “Fairy Garden” at the end of Ma mère l’Oye, then you are a lost cause. […] words are inadequate to describe this calibre of music-making.’ - Gramophone, December 1994 [Boléro, La Valse, Ma mère l’Oye] ‘I never expect to hear the Ravel works more exquisitely performed or recorded […] In the Pavane there is extreme delicacy and restraint, together with a beautiful sense of remote pathos […] As for the Rapsodie espagnole, one has to marvel at the artistry of both Monteux and the LSO. Tempo and rhythm are dead right; every nuance of this super-subtle score is brought out by the most sensitively pointed phrasing and a fantastic command of rubato; and all sections of the orchestra cover themselves in glory’ - Gramophone, June 1962 [Pavane, Rapsodie espagnole] Tracks: Maurice Ravel: Boléro La Valse Ma Mère L’Oye Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte Rapsodie Espagnole

eminent of British early-music groups in the late-1960s: Musica Reservata and the Purcell Consort of Voices.

The performance of contrapuntal vocal music, with viols doubling the voices, stems from a long European tradition and in several of the songs on this record, strings are used in this way. Part of an ongoing mini-series on Eloquence, 'The Tudors' presents a series of recordings of the music of this dynasty. ‘Musica Reservata’s … vitality brings a great deal of early Renaissance music to life […] All the madrigals are thoroughly enjoyable. Anja Thauer, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra- Dvorak: Cello Concerto/Reger: Suite/ Francaix: Fantaisie £6.50 ELQ4822181 0028948221813 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

In the year 2015 we should have been celebrating the seventieth birthdays of two uniquely talented women cellists who were both born in 1945, but instead we have been remembering a

more tragic coincidence. In 1973, multiple sclerosis forced the English virtuoso Jacqueline du Pré to retire and her German colleague Anja Thauer committed suicide. At that stage Du Pré

had already enjoyed almost a decade of fame, while Thauer was still building her career. At fifteen she went to the Paris Conservatoire on a scholarship, to study with André Navarra, and also took a course at the École Normale. In 1962, against strong competition from 21 other Paris Conservatoire students, she won the Grand Prix. She was friends with the pianist Claude Françaix and her playing of the Fantaisie by Claude's famous father Jean Françaix had so impressed the pianist-composer that he accompanied her in the final concert. His music became one of her strongest suits and she recorded the work some years later, coupling it with Reger's Third Suite for solo cello. At this stage many fellow students thought her a better player than Du Pré, who studied briefly in Paris with Paul Tortelier around the same time. In Prague in March 1968 she made the DG recording which makes up the rest of this reissue and for which she is best remembered, the Dvorák Concerto with the Czech Philharmonic under 32-year-old Zden Mácal. It was a version praised by The Gramophone's Trevor Harvey upon its first appearance, not only for Thauer's expressive playing, but for the many felicities in Dvorák's score so often overlooked in performances of the work. Thauer's discography is far from large but it is mostly of top quality and these three interpretations are central to it. ‘Unaccompanied cello music, even as agreeably consonant as this three-movement Reger Suite in A minor, is only bearable when it is superbly played. It is here, with fine tone and impeccable intonation. […] Anja Thauer is already among the elect as a cellist’ - Gramophone, August 1966 (Reger, Françaix) ‘Anja Thauer is clearly an extremely gifted cellist both technically and in her character as an artist […] Zden 283;k Mácal … contributes an accompaniment of real character and individuality. […] These two artists in collaboration give us an untraditional interpretation of the concerto in the very best sense of that adjuective; that is, they refuse to accept the way parts of it are conventionally played and give it as if they had never heard anyone else in it before… […] Miss Thauer’s technique is triumphant so the most difficult double-stopping at speed is perfectly tuned and completely assured.’ - Gramophone, January 1969 Tracks: Antonín Dvorák - Cello Concerto In B Minor, Op. 104 Max Reger - Suite In A Minor For Solo Cello, Op. 131c No. 3 Jean Françaix - Fantaisie Pour Violoncelle Et Piano

Renata Tebaldi, Giorgio Favaretto, Richard Bonynge - Serenata Tebaldi: Rossini, Bellini, Scarlatti Etc £9.25 ELQ4805371 0028948053711 CD2 AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

It is difficult to dissociate the pure, warm tones of Renata Tebaldi's voice from her usual operatic repertoire - the heroines of the Italian lyric stage of the nineteenth and

early twentieth centuries which, thanks to her exceptional vocal and dramatic endowment, she interpreted so superbly.

That these unforgettable portrayals were not just the product of instinct, however, but are backed by a sound musical schooling and a deep and penetrating intelligence, is shown by these recitals recorded with pianist Giorgio Favaretto (1956 and 1957) and with conductor/pianist Richard Bonynge (1972) in which Tebaldi offers us a comprehensive survey of the art of song in a succession of vocal styles, from Arie Antiche (Scarlatti, Handel), music by Mozart and Rossini (including one of her specialities, La regatta Veneziana), through to gems from 19th-century bel canto and verismo composers (Donizetti, Bellini, Mascagni) and into the twentieth century (Zandonai, Respighi, Martucci, Tosti). ‘“Lungi dal caro bene … is a very lovely melody and beautifully sung […] The Rossini song “La promessa” is delightful, and I also much enjoyed Tebaldi’s moving singing of the two Bellini songs and of the lively Verdi number.’ - Gramophone, May 1957 [CD1 1–14] ‘[Tebaldi] makes a noble effect in the spacious, elegiac arias by Scarlatti. The Handel too is fine in a monumental way.’ - Gramophone, May 1958 [CD1: 15–22, CD2: 1–6] ‘recommended without reservation […] exemplary versions of bel canto songs’ - Gramophone, June 1997 CD1, CD2: 1–6] ‘At a relaxed mezzo forte Tebaldi’s voice is still the lovely instrument we know from earlier days […] Bonynge is a discreet and sympathetic accompanist.’ - Gramophone, August 1973 [CD2: 7–22] CD 1: Anonymous Leggiadri occhi belli / Scarlatti Le violette / Handel Piangerò la sorte mia / Sarti Lungi dal caro bene / Rossini La promessa / Bellini Dolente imagine di Fille mia / Bellini Vanne, o rosa fortunata / Verdi Stornello / Martucci La canzone dei Ricordi / La canzone dei Ricordi / La canzone dei Ricordi / Trad. Consortium Classicum, Gernot Schmalfuss - Joseph Haydn/Mozart: Oboe Quartets £9.25 MDG3010314 760623031422 CD MDG CLASSICAL

Franz Joseph Rosinack was the first oboist of the Fürstenberg Orchestra to arrange the masterpieces of his time for reuse in his brilliant solo appearances. A certain chutzpah on his

part is seen in the fact that he even dared to take on Joseph Haydn's string quartets - the result makes for highly rewarding listening.

Gernot Schmalfuß and the Consortium Classicum present two of Rosinack's oboe quartets in fascinating juxtaposition with Mozart's original masterpiece for the same instrumentation on the re-release of a production sold out for many years. The musicians of the Consortium Classicum have captured the carefree tone making for a successful serenade like hardly any other ensemble. The broad cantilenas are in the best company with Gernot Schmalfuß, and this Consortium solo member of many years presents top-class chamber wind culture supported by three string instrumentalists. This is fine entertainment on the highest level! Tracks: Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Arr. Franz Joseph Rosinack: Quartett Nr. 40 Hob. III:48 (op.50/5) V Poco Adagio Menuetto. Allegretto Finale. Christoph Schoener - Reger: Fantasia On The Chorale Op 27, Introduction, Passacaglia Und Fuge £9.25 MDG9491919 760623191966 SACD MDG CLASSICAL

Christoph Schoener performs on the organs of St. Michaelis Church in Hamburg in MDG's groundbreaking 2+2+2 format. The reproduction in 2+2+2 format positions the three organ

units with breathtaking vividness in the living room and provides a precise acoustic picture of Hamburg's principal church.

This time Max Reger is on the programme selected by Christoph Schoener with a surprising link to St. Michael's Church in Hamburg. Along with the early chorale fantasia on "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" and the mighty Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue from the last years of Reger's life, his selection from the Thirty Little Chorale Preludes combining absolute simplicity with demanding harmonies shows the grand master of complex and opulent organ music in a completely new and splendid light. John Rea scored a sensational success with his adaptation of Alban Berg's Wozzeck for chamber ensemble, and now this Canadian composer and highly knowledgeable arranger is back. His ensemble version of Berg's Three Orchestral Pieces op. 6 was commissioned by the

Musikkollegium Winterthur. Pierre-Alain Monot and his Winterthur colleagues have recorded these pieces and a version of Berg's famous Violin Concerto reduced to the smallest ensemble dimensions by Andreas Tarkmann for MDG. The arrangement of large orchestral works for smaller ensembles was very much a tradition in Berg's immediate environment. Arnold Schönberg's Society for Private Musical Performances was a venue for the study of the latest music. The arrangements continue to be popular today and MDG offers these in the Winterthur premiere of John Rea's arrangement of the Orchestral Pieces in lavish 3-D technique. The carefully produced Super Audio CD 2+2+2 recording enables the listener to participate directly in this memorable event. Tracks: Alban Berg: Drei Orchesterstücke Op. 6 (Arr. Frank Bungarten – Federico Moreno Torroba: Guitar Works £9.25 MDG9051915 760623191560 SACD MDG CLASSICAL

Even today Andrés Segovia continues to influence our understanding of guitar music like no other musician in his field. This virtuoso's countless compositional commissions contributed significantly to the popularity of the Spanish national instrument and its qualification for the

concert hall even beyond his native Iberia. Outside Spain, however, it is a little-known fact that Federico Moreno Torroba so perfectly matched Segovia's tone even in his very first compositional efforts that the master recommended his works as models for other composers. Frank Bungarten has set out to give Torroba the credit he deserves with this fine selection from his extensive oeuvre for solo guitar making us eager to hear more. Torroba's music is in the best hands with Frank Bungarten. After all, Bungarten is one of the most knowledgeable interpreters of the Spanish guitar repertoire. He received the first prize at the Granada Guitar Competition from Andrés Segovia himself and ever since then (if not before) has ranked internationally as one of the most sought-after soloists and chamber partners. The Frankfurt Bassoon Consort is formed by eight bassoons and a contrabassoon. Its guiding spirit Henrik Rabien has arranged Bach's Goldberg Variations for this unusual ensemble – a

daring feat whose success has been undisputed ever since the acclaimed premiere in May 2013. Rabien's work systematically maintains the original key of G major/G minor. The instruments merely require transposition down by an octave – with a sensational effect: the contrabassoon contributes a profound bass without its equal! Variations of genuinely breathtaking virtuosity that one would normally not think of entrusting to the bassoon alternate with cantabile parts in which the instrument is completely in its element. Ensemble Salzburg Barock – Georg Muffat: Florilegium Primum 1695 £9.99 CC72678 608917267822 Hybrid SACD CHALLENGE CLASSICS CLASSICAL Baroque composer Georg Muffat was well-known for the remarkably articulate and informative

performance directions printed along with his collections of string pieces Florilegium Primum and Florilegium Secundum (First and Second Bouquets) in 1695 and 1698. On this album the

Salzburg Baroque, making its Challenge Classics debut, perform the Florilegium Primum.

Florilegium Primum consists of 50 individual flowers (mostly dance movements), making up seven flower bushes (fascicles, suites), coming together as one bouquet (florilegium). Muffat probably composed the suites, possibly even the individual dance movements, independently of each other, combining them only for the printed edition. The Latin titles of course attract attention. The erudite knowledge of the Jesuit-taught composer provokes thought about their significance. Muffat delivers his music to the listener not only for “amusement” but also for “judgement”: apart from its function as entertainment in the chamber and at the table, as well as providing rhythm for dancing, his music was also intended - on another level - to inspire peace.

Isabelle van Keulen Ensemble – Astor Piazzolla: Grand Tango! £9.99 CC72695 608917269529 Hybrid SACD CHALLENGE CLASSICS CLASSICAL The second album in the critically acclaimed Tango project by the Isabelle van Keulen Ensemble,

consisting of more tantalising compositions by Ástor Piazzolla, transmits the poignant beauty, strength and melancholy of the Argentine composer’s music in a gripping way.

The Isabelle van Keulen Ensemble was formed in 2011 by the internationally renowned Dutch violinist and violist Isabelle van Keulen, following her Carte Blanche concert series in the Concertgebouw Haarlem, the Netherlands, with the aim of performing Ástor Piazzolla’s Tango Nuevo masterworks to the highest technical and musical standards. Together with bandoneònist Christian Gerber, also one of the leading performers of his generation and winner of several prizes (among them the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis), pianist Ulrike Payer, well-known for her versatility and sensibility in various musical genres, and double-bass player Rüdiger Ludwig, a charismatic musician and Co-Principal of the NDR Orchestra Hanover, they overwhelmed their audience on their first appearance. The result was a series of high profile concerts at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Rheingau Music Festival, Schleswig Holstein Festival, Delft Festival and elsewhere. In 2013 their first, highly-praised CD and DVD ‘Tango!’ appeared on Challenge Classics with well-known works by Ástor Piazzolla. As part of the DVD edition, Challenge brought out a documentary about the making of the CD, ‘Music from the Heart’. Following this success, several tours were planned in the UK, Switzerland and Benelux.

Review of van Keulen’s first recording of Piazzolla on Challenge Classics, Tango!: “Stands out for its exemplary performances… rich and idiomatic… the group successfully captures the essence of Piazzolla’s compositions, both their nostalgic Romanticism and their seductive drama.”- The Strad

Boris Berezovsky, Swedish Chamber Orchestra Orebro & Thomas Dausgaard – Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 ‘Emperor’, Choral Fantasy, Op. 80 £8.49 PSC1285 7033662012855 CD SIMAX CLASSICAL The twelfth and final volume of Beethoven’s Complete Orchestral Works in Simax’s edition - a

pairing of the ‘Emperor’ Concerto and the Choral Fantasy - by Thomas Dausgaard, Boris Berezovsky and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra finds all the musicians on top form.

Though close to each other in date, the two works on this disc, which are the last in which Beethoven wrote for piano and orchestra together, are in other respects quite dissimilar. The Fifth Piano Concerto known (almost exclusively within the English-speaking world, incidentally) by the nickname of the ‘Emperor’ was Beethoven’s last completed work in the genre. It is a standard piano concerto, or so it seems to listeners today, because it was uniquely influential in defining the form for the next 100 years. To its first audiences it must have seemed highly individual and even idiosyncratic. The Choral Fantasy, on the other hand, appears an unorthodox, even unique conception, much freer in form, as befits the title “fantasy” which Beethoven chose for it. Yet both are entirely characteristic of the composer in their deployment of a structure that served the purposes of the content of the work itself to its greatest advantage. Reviews for previous Beethoven volumes in this series: “If you’re in the mood, it’s like driving a Beethoven Porsche: strap yourself in, start the engine, and let her rip.” - Audiophile Audition “The recording is gorgeous: beautifully balanced, wide in dynamic range and utterly natural in timbre, with an arresting presence that illustrates how effective a small (38-piece) orchestra can be in this repertory.” - International Record Review “A recorded performance of compelling truthfulness ... A recording which will stand the test of time ... A life-affirming recording. [The recommended recording of the Triple Concerto, Building a Library, CD Review BBC3] Personnel: Boris Berezovsky (piano), Swedish Chamber Orchestra Örebro, DR Vocal Ensemble and Choir, Thomas Dausgaard (conductor) Tracks: Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major ‘Emperor’ 1. I. Allegro 2. II. Adagio un poco mosso 3. III. Rondo: Allegro 4. Fantasia in C minor for piano, soloists, chorus and orchestra, Op. 80

Smash Ensemble – Chalk Laboratory I: Chamber Music of Ramon Lazkano £8.49 ODRCD320 0855317003202 CD ODRADEK RECORDS CLASSICAL A must for lovers of contemporary classical music and for anyone excited by the exploration of new and innovative artistic ideas. Composer Ramon Lazkano’s music, like the Basque culture

into which he was born in 1968, is unique. The works on this disc are characteristic, and features stylistic shifts covering a broad spectrum: fantastical, allegorical, energetic, languid. Lazkano seeks to unite the experiences and possibilities of life in a series of works as vast as it is varied. Lazkano takes his musical cues from varied sources, often literary or visual. With Smash Ensemble, he shares the ability to coax movement out of stasis, and to penetrate deep recesses of the imagination in order to create works of deceptive simplicity and stark profundity. Smash Ensemble was drawn to the muted shades of his music, which hint at an inner world barely glimpsed through subtle gestures and delicate harmonics. This CD is a bold artistic statement on the part of Smash Ensemble, who have said of this project: “We found beauty in Lazkano’s complex sounds. This disc represents our musical personality and aesthetic taste.” Considered to be one of Europe’s finest collaborations, Smash Ensemble is a collective of outstanding musicians - 17 musicians of whom take part in this recording - from across the globe, all of whom are specialists in contemporary music.. Carion – Nielsen’s footsteps - Wind Quintets by Nielsen, Senstius, Emborg & Schultz £8.49 ODRCD321 0855317003219 CD+DVD ODRADEK RECORDS CLASSICAL

The year 2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Carl Nielsen, whose musical legacy remains of huge cultural importance both in Denmark and across the globe. This disc perfromed by Carion features Nielsen’s Wind Quintet, alongside three world premiere recordings of wind

quintets written by composers who were influenced by the Danish composer. Nielsen’s Wind Quintet is one of his finest and most innovative pieces. Nielsen abandons the traditional structure of melody and accompaniment for a more balanced, experimental style, exploring the rich sonorities of wind instruments in different combinations. This release also includes a bonus DVD recording of the Nielsen Wind Quintet. These different groupings inspired the musicians of Carion to take an original approach when recording the piece. As with many of their live performances, the musicians played with the physical space suggested by the music, moving forward during a more prominent passage to create an intimate sound, stepping back when accompanying, or lining up in a row to form a sonorous chorale. The result is a fascinating and unique interpretation of this repertoire. The three world premiere recordings consist of the quirky yet lyrical ‘Une amourette’ (1943) by Svend S. Schultz, whose centenary was celebrated in 2013; Jens Laursøn Emborg’s colourful and varied Wind Quintet (1931), and the imaginative, enthralling Wind Quintet (1934) by Kai Senstius. Personnel: Dora Seres (flute), Egils Upatnieks (oboe), Egils Sefers (clarinet), David M.A.P. Palmquist (horn), Niels Anders Vedsten Larsen (bassoon) Tracks: Carl Nielsen: Kvintet, Op. 43 1. I. Ulf-Dieter Schaaff & Thomas Wellen – Airmail from Vienna - Schubert, Berlioz, Doppler etc. £8.49 ES2061 4015372820619 CD ES-DUR CLASSICAL

Franz Schubert's Variations for flute and piano on Trockne Blumen (Dried Flowers) from the song-cycle ‘Die schöne Mullerin’ is considered the most important flute work of the Romantic

period. It forms the centrepiece of flautist Ulf-Dieter Schaaff’s recital, ‘Airmail from Vienna’, of music with Viennese connections: highly virtuosic and lyrical, classical and modern, atonal and

jazzy. The composers Franz Schubert, Ernst Krenek, Friedrich Cerha and Paul Amadeus Pisk were all born in Vienna, while Franz Doppler (composer of the popular bravura piece ‘Fantaisie pastorale hongroise’) was a co-founder of the Vienna Philharmonic and principal flute of the Vienna Court Opera. And Berlioz’s ‘Sylphentanz’ (from The Damnation of Faust) has been reworked for flute and piano by Vienna-based composer Joseph Diermaier (born 1964). Born in Düsseldorf, Ulf-Dieter Schaaf has been the solo flautist of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin since 1995. He’s played in the Berliner Philharmonic and in addition to his solo and chamber music activities with pianist Thomas Wellen amongst others, he is an internationally renowned teacher. In 2000, he took over a flute class at the Liszt School of Music in Weimar. Personnel: Ulf-Dieter Schaaff (flute), Thomas Wellen (piano) Tracks: 1. Acclaimed Welsh soprano star releases her first album since 'Passione' in 2005. Recorded at Acapela studio in Pentyrch, Cardiff which is owned by former Royal Harpist Catrin Finch and her husband Hywel Wigley, the music for the album was provided by an array of illustrious musicians including Catrin herself, who features on several of the tracks including one she composed herself entitled 'Feeling Alive'. Meanwhile, duets on the album include international opera star and soprano Rebecca Evans and Covent Garden tenor and television and radio personality Wynne Evans. Shan says: "Over the years I've built up quite a collection of songs, hymns and arias and identifying a repertoire was initially a challenge in itself. Nevertheless, as time progressed, an obvious theme began to emerge - one of calm, relaxation and reflection, yet still full of life, something which is clearly identifiable across the flow of the album. One minute you're in paradise floating in beautiful string, harp and piano sounds, and the next you're in a frenzy of wild Welsh passion singing at full throttle with true Welsh 'hwyl' The album also features the Nidum Ensemble - comprised of handpicked musicians from orchestras such as the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra -players include cellist Steffan Morris and Violinists Rhys Watkins, Rakhi Singh and Benjamin Baker. Also accompanying is the superb pianist Jeff Howard who has played for Shan in numerous occasions over the years and is also responsible for two of the musical arrangements on the album.
