Canned Heat - Songs From The Road £10.00 RUF1218 710347121824 CD+DVD RUF RECORDS BLUES

The world turns. Fashions change. Bands rise and fall. But you can't stop the boogie. Fifty years after Canned Heat was founded by blues scholars Bob 'The Bear' Hite and

Alan 'Blind Owl' Wilson in Topanga Canyon, California, the West Coast legends just keep rolling on down the road.

Canned Heat have sold more records played more festivals, worldwide and than any other blues band in music history. They’re the only blues band to ever have three Number One records with On The Road Again, Going Up The Country and Let's Work Together. Until they pull up in your town, there's Songs From The Road. The famous Ruf Records live series has already showcased heavyweights from Luther Allison to Royal Southern Brotherhood. Now, in 2015, this two-disc CD/DVD set finds the modern Canned Heat lineup on blistering form, shaking Bonn's Harmonie club with a 16-song set driven by the boogie groove that's practically a strand of rock 'n' roll's DNA. Led from the back, as ever, by iconic drummer and guardian-of-the-flame Adolfo 'Fito' De La Parra, the rhythm section is given further pedigree by Sixties bassist Larry 'The Mole' Taylor. On lead vocals and harp, give it up for New Orleans legend Dale Spalding, while John 'JP' Paulus capably covers guitar duties for Woodstock-era bandmember Harvey 'The Snake' Mandel (as he recovers from recent health issues). When "Going Up The Country" strikes up, you'll imagine yourself back in the dappled sunshine of Woodstock in 1969, flicking a peace sign, flowers in your hair. From "Amphetamine Annie" to "Let's Work Together", few bands make such an evocative sound, so inextricably tied to the summer of love, yet so fresh and relevant in modern times. Canned Heat's place in the pantheon of the greats is undeniable, and their importance to the blues inestimable. The LA outfit began in 1965, born not from commercial interests, but from a deep love of the genre, as Hite and Wilson evolved from their roles as vinyl collectors and blues aficionados to lead the nascent lineup. As slide god and super-fan Sonny Landreth recently noted: "Canned Heat were, like, the ultimate white-blues aficionados. These guys, they were so into the blues, way ahead of other people." CD: On The Road Again / Time Was / Don't Know Where She Went (She Split) / Nighthawk / So Sad ( The World's In A Tangle) / Going Up The Country / Oaxaca / Chicken Shack Boogie / Future Blues / Cristo Redentor / Amphetamine Annie / Rollin' And Tumblin' / Let's Work Together / Euro Boogie DVD: On The Road Again / Time Was / I'm Her Man / Don't Know Where She Went (She Split) / Nighthawk / So Sad (The World's In A Tangle) / Going Up The Country / Oaxaca / Chicken Shack Boogie / Have A Good Time / Future Blues / Cristo Redentor / Amphetamine Annie / Rollin' And Tumblin' / Let's Work Together / Euro Boogie Also Available:

BGOCD694 – ‘Hooker 'N' Heat’ (With John Lee Hooker)

Royal Southern Brotherhood - Don't Look Back £14.50

RUF2015 710347201519 LP2 RUF RECORDS BLUES

Now available as a 2 LP set on 180gram vinyl. New blood. New beginnings. For Royal Southern Brotherhood, Don't Look Back

isn't just an album title, but the attitude that drove the award-winning US band's third release.

The past year has seen seismic change for RSB. If you've read the rock press headlines, you'll know that founder members Devon Allman and Mike Zito have now amicably departed to pursue their solo careers. Don't Look Back proves the MkII lineup is up to the mark. Now, the band dynamic that Cyril famously describes as a "gumbo" gets a fiery new pinch of spice with a fresh guitar partnership. Blues-rock fans will know to expect big things from Bart Walker. Recruiting Tyrone Vaughan was another great idea. Like his feted predecessor, Devon Allman, the Texas guitarist knows all about the double-edged sword of a celebrated surname: he's the son of Jimmie Vaughan and nephew of the immortal Stevie Ray Vaughan. LP 1: I Wanna Be Free / Reach My Goal / Don't Look Back / Hit Me Once / The Big Greasy / Hard Blues LP 2: Better Half / Penzi / It's Time For Love / Bayou Baby / Poor Boy / They Don't Make 'Em Like You No More / Come Hell Or High Water / Anchor Me

Laurence Jones - What's It Gonna Be £14.50

RUF2018 710347201816 LP RUF RECORDS BLUES

At this juncture, a less passionate artist might cool their heels and count their royalties. No chance. Saviour of the British blues scene is not a position for part-

timers, and in 2015, Laurence is back with his stunning third album, What's It Gonna Be.Now available on 180 gram vinyl.

What's It Gonna Be. Now there's a question. If you've followed the 23-year-old's journey so far, from his roots as the hottest guitar gunslinger in Stratford-upon-Avon, through his 2012 breakout with Thunder In The Sky, to his rise with Ruf Records, you might have an inkling of the qualities that will be found on this third album. There's gonna be white-hot fretwork. Vocals with power and soul. Songwriting that grabs you by the collar. Released in 2015 on Ruf Records, What's It Gonna Be gives you all of the above. But it gives you more, too, pushing the bandleader's talent further than ever before. Abominations Of Humanity: The Evil Within £8.84 RYE1174 889290132468 DVD WIENERWORLD DOCUMENTARY

Man is a unique beast in nature because he takes joy in the known suffering of other sentient beings and hunts for fun and profit. This is the history of mankind's abuse of his own species.

Ever since man became conscious of his own existence, he has experimented with death and torture. He has imagined and invented all-manner of sick and twisted ways of inflicting pain and suffering. Even under the cover of medical advancement, mankind has ignored the brutality of his own actions and excused himself. He has a remarkable ability to hide from himself and others the nature of the beast within. When the innocent animals of the world refused to give answers, man turned on himself and human experimentation began.

Nice Bombs £8.84 MVD7362D 094223027173 DVD WIENERWORLD DOCUMENTARY

In Nice Bombs filmmaker Usama Alshaibi returns to Baghdad to reunite with his family after nearly 24 years. This documentary navigates through his unique relationship to an Iraq that is much different than

the country of his childhood. Usama captures the conflicting reactions to the conditions of life in Baghdad.

Through a wide range of opinions and experiences he provides a broad panorama of voices long neglected under Saddam's regime. His cousin Tareef enters the room upon hearing an explosion. "It's a bomb. A Nice Bomb," he explains. The phrase is indicative of his family's nonchalance about their situation. As a young boy put it, "We're Iraqis. It's normal."

With humour and resilience Nice Bombs explores Usama's dual role as both Iraqi and American. The DVD contains extras including more interviews with Iraqi women and broader more detailed views of life in Iraq, from picnics in a war zone to a family living in a bombed out elementary school.

Nice Bombs received a generous grant from the Creative Capital Arts Foundation and won the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award for Documentary Feature. It received Best Documentary at the Chicago Underground Film Festival.

"Thoroughly engaging . . .offers a uniquely time-layered vision of the war." – Ronnie Scheib, Variety

"Alshaibi does something so simple yet, sadly, so neglected: He lets a Western audience see Iraqis not as crazed Middle Easterners shouting and shooting (and dying) en masse, but as individuals going about their daily lives..." - Time Out Chicago

Donald Vega - With Respect to Monty £9.25

RCD1023 096802280160 CD RESONANCE RECORDS JAZZ

In celebration of the Jamaican jazz icon, Monty Alexander, pianist Donald Vega puts together a hard-swinging compilation of Monty's great, early compositions. ‘With Respect to Monty’ features an all-star lineup of Anthony Wilson (guitar), Hassan

Shakur (bass) and Lewis Nash (drums). Since his debut on Resonance Records, Spiritual Nature (2012), Vega is entirely his own man, completely in command of his material. As the late, great Mulgrew Miller's replacement in the Ron Carter Trio, Vega has big shoes to fill and does so admirably. His wide appreciation of piano maestros is spotlighted with this release that includes seven original Monty Alexander masterpieces. Much like Monty, Donald approaches the piano with technical prowess, yet with a sense of playfulness and light spirit. Both men share a warm touch to the instrument - melodic and free. The trio of Vega, Shakur and Nash have an intimate working relationship. Shakur's bass is a solid anchor, while Nash's colorful, rhythmic drumming is chameleon-like, adapting effortlessly to each piece. Add to that the imagination, depth and precision playing of guitar virtuoso Anthony Wilson - and you have a winning combination. Tracks: Eleuthera / 3000 Miles Ago / Compassion / Slippery / Consider / Mango Rengue / Renewal / You Can See / Sweet Lady / The Gathering

Carl Perkins & Friends - Blue Suede Shoes £7.60

SMACD1032 636551803274 DVD+CD MADFISH ROCK & ROLL

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this unique show, Madfish are releasing the concert both on CD & DVD packaged together for the first time. Carl Perkins & Friends 'Blue Suede Shoes – A Rockabilly Session' is being presented in a mediabook with liner

notes from Sam Szczepanski, who was one of the lucky fans who managed to get a ticket the show.

Written in October 1955 and released in January 1956, ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ was an instant classic earning a place in the history books when it became the first million-seller to crossover from the Country chart to the Pop and R&B listings. Swiftly covered by Elvis Presley and later The Beatles, the song remains a Rock’n’Roll anthem. Fitting then that Carl Perkins, the man who wrote and first performed ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, should be accorded a television special to celebrate its 30th anniversary. On 21st October 1985 at London’s Limehouse Studios a superstar cast of friends and fans joined Carl Perkins to record a TV special celebrating his career and the classic songs that he had recorded during it. Perkins was joined on stage by George Harrison and Eric Clapton along with other stars including Dave Edmunds, Slim Jim Phantom and Lee (Stray Cats) Rocker plus Earl Slick and singer Rosanne Cash, daughter of the legendary Johnny Cash. George Harrison struck up a lasting friendship with Perkins and much of the continued interest in the programme lies in the prominent role played by Harrison. The former Beatle takes lead vocal on several tracks as well as playing guitar and having a great time. The Beatles connection is even stronger in that Harrison is joined by former colleague Ringo Starr with the show representing their first reunion gig since the mid-1970’s. This CD DVD captures the whole concert, both as an audio and visual experience capturing Carl Perkins and the All-Star band performing Perkins’ finest songs which also include That’s Alright Mama and Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On, plus the DVD includes short interviews with Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison & Jerry Lee Lewis interviews discussing the importance and influence of Carl Perkins. Various – Johnny Powers And Friends - Michigan Rockers £7.99 ETCD1048 8437013270168 CD EL TORO ROCK & ROLL

On paper, Michigan seems an unlikely candidate for a rockabilly hotbed, yet because of its plentiful jobs in the steel and automobile industries centred around Detroit, the state became a

magnet for Southerners in the 1930s and 1940s. Consequently, a healthy market for country and blues music developed into one for rockabilly amongst the children of the migrants. Boasting the longest freshwater coastline of any of the US states, there is nothing wet about the searing rock 'n' roll laid down by the likes of Johnny Powers nor the wealth of recordings made at the tiny Fortune Studio in Detroit and others dotted around the state long before Motown held sway Tracks: Johnny Powers & his Rockets - Honey Let's Go (To A Rock And Roll Show) / Johnny Powers & his Rockets - Your Love / Johnny Powers with Stan Getz & his Tom Cats - Long Blond Hair, Red Rose Lips / Johnny Powers with Stan Getz & his Tom Cats - Rock Rock / Johnny "Scat" Brown - Indeed I Do / Johnny "Scat" Brown - Mama Rock / Johnny Powers - With Your Love, With Your Kiss / Johnny Powers - Be Mine, All Mine / Bob & The Rockbillies - Your Kind Of Love / Harold L & The Offbeats - Three Years / Jimmy Wayne & The Galaxies - You Shake Me / Jimmy Franklin with Pete De Bree & The Wanderers - Long Tall Lou (From Louisville) / Roy Hall & his Alley Cats - Dig, Everybody, Dig That Boogie / Lafayette-Yarborough - Livin' Doll / Vic Gallon - I'm Gone / Jimmy Gartin & his Bad Cats - Honey Won't You Love Me / Jimmy Kirkland with Stan Getz & his Tom Cats - Come On Baby / Dell Vaughn with The Fortune-Aires- Rock The Universe / Bobby Smith - Bevy Mae / Roy Hall & his Jumping Cats - Three Alley Cats / Harold L & The Offbeats - Connie / Ray Taylor & The Alabama Pals - Connie Lou / Roy Kelly - Rock and Roll Rock / Leon James & The Rhythm Rockers - Thinkin' About You / Ellis Kirk & The Town And Country Boys - Sweetie Pie / Jimmy Kirkland with Stan Getz & his Tom Cats - I Wonder If You Wonder / Lafayette-Yarborough - Cool, Cool Baby / Leon James with Walter Atkins & his Homotones - Baby, Let's Rock / Bobby Smith - She's Gone From Me / Farris Wilder - It's All Your Fault / Bob & The Rockbillies - Baby, Why Did You Have To Go / Ray Taylor & The Alabama Pals - My Hamtramck Baby / Jimmy Carroll - Big Green Car / Jimmy Franklin with Pete De Bree & The Wanderers - Hey, Mr Presley!

SOUL/R&B NEW RELEASE - 14/08/2015

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas - Secret Evil £7.49 INS000062 0885150340547 CD THE ORCHARD ROCK

'Secret Evil' is fresh, focused and surprising, and a remarkable debut album from an indescribably compelling new band. A self-described storyteller at heart, Hernandez chronicles

her personal trials and triumphs throughout 'Secret Evil', all in the hope of touching a truly universal chord.

The album follows their well received 'Caught Up' EP and sees the Detroit-based band serving up a brilliantly polyglot sonic stew – equal parts rockabilly and surf pop, cabaret jazz and funky reggae, Latin psych and Gypsy punk – all cooked up on the hot Motor City pavement and seasoned by that distinctly Detroit combination of blasted R&B, showband theatrics and limitless rock 'n' soul energy. Songs like 'Caught Up' and the syncopated 'No Place Left To Hide' showcase Hernandez's unstoppable vocals and breadth of musical ambition, braiding contemporary pop thrills with an original and unmistakable creative persona all her own. "Hoodoo blues stomps, country waltz ballads, primitive rock and jazzy inflections coalesce and flow around the anchor of Hernandez's rich voice" – Popmatters Tracks: No Place Left To Hide / Sorry I Stole Your Man / Cry Cry Cry / Dead Brains / Tired Oak / Over / Caught Up / Neck Tattoo / Run Run Run / Downtown Man / Lovers First / Gone Two Seconds / Demons / Don't Take My Man To Idaho

MOV007 643157435839 CD MOVIMIENTOS RECORDS WORLD MUSIC

***Digital download distributed by Proper***

Brand new studio release by The Voodoo Love Orchestra. Harking back to the big band sound of 1960s Latin America via the back streets of New

Orleans, the infectious, maverick and irresistibly swinging street music of Voodoo Love Orchestra will have the crowd baying for more.

This is more an invasion than a performance, with a euphoric riot of musicians weaving in and out of the throng, overseen by a megaphone-wielding High Priestess invoking the spirits of celebration. Delving deep into the heart of the tropics, this globe-trotting ensemble straddles a whole range of pan-Atlantic sounds: Colombian Cumbia, Cuban Comparsa, New Orleans Jazz, Mississippi Blues, Nigerian Afrobeat, Jamaican Ska and Ghanaian Highlife. The musical melange of relentlessly syncopated beats and squealing trumpets is an abundantly joyous salute to the roots of carnival, with a line up of sousaphone, trombone, trumpet, baritone sax, tenor sax, alto sax, clarinet, vocals, military drumcorps and latin percussion. Since its formation the ensemble has graced the halls of the Royal Festival Hall, got down and dirty with festival-goers at Secret Garden Party, entertained Russian oligarchs and everything in between! Available as a small band or a larger invasion of dance, drum and brass, Voodoo Love Orchestra are as happy parading the streets as they are on stage! Alex Hutton Trio - Magna Carta Suite £7.99

FIRECD82 5060092198202 CD F-IRE JAZZ Alex Hutton is one of the UK’ Jazz’s hidden treasures. A fine composer, with an ear for

folk and classical influences, he is a gifted, thoughtful improviser and a mainstay of the London Jazz scene who has worked with the leading figures from Jim Mullen and

Pete King to Pete Wareham. Magna Carta Suite is his fourth album and offers a musical journey of ideas exploring the layers of history and landscapes from 1215 to 2015. The suite highlights the influence of Magna Carta as a founding document of the western traditions of liberty and democracy in this the 800th anniversary of it’s signing and its influence in the creation of the American constitution. Magna Carta Suite features Hutton’s long established trio with drummer Asaf Sirkis, who brings “a wide palate of colours, a full dynamic range and an optimism and calmness which is essential on both the studio and live dates’ and bassist Yuri Goloubev. The album also features spoken word from Neil Sparkes on the last 2 pieces and his words and performance (from a larger publication ‘Xerox sonnets & X-Ray Blues ‘ which will be published by Hesterglock Press in June 2015) add a huge dimension and drama to the album. Capitalizing on the wide range of colours and textures available to him with his trio, he composed a suite that draws on music from northern European and especially English sources over the last 800 years. Hutton then tied these themes to specific political or social events in history. Using early music, baroque classical and English folk as melodic and harmonic fragments Hutton depicts a forward momentum in the music as Western music developed in parallel with the pursuit of liberty and democracy. George Malcolm - Scarlatti: Sonatas. Bach: Italian Concerto; Chromatic Fantas £6.50 ELQ4820506 0028948205066 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

Although from an earlier age of Baroque performance practice, these recordings have a vividness and freshness that leap out of the speakers more than sixty years after they were

made. They receive their first reissue on Decca CD George Malcolm, who died in 1997, irreverently called the harpsichord the ‘jangle box’, yet he was a master of that instrument, and of several other musical domains as well. Of Scottish ancestry, he was born in London in 1917 and when he was just seven he was admitted to the Royal College of Music. He also excelled at the organ and at the piano (his first keyboard instrument), and as a choral conductor, he served as Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, beginning in 1947. Pianist András Schiff, who recorded with Malcolm on several occasions, commented that he ‘was a great musician, a Renaissance man, a wonderful human being. He has been influential in the development of choral and instrumental music in Britain and abroad, and l consider myself one of the fortunate recipients of his immense knowledge, broad culture, and excellent taste. He should never be forgotten.’ In 1965 Malcolm was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire. ‘George Malcolm clearly delights in playing with colours […] this disc will prove very rewarding: the sheer technical brilliance of the playing … and the faultless rhythmic control make these performances outstanding’ - Gramophone, June 1954 (Scarlatti) ‘Malcolm’s outlook on the Fantasia gives us new insight into its poetical and meditative aspects; he plays it as if he were in rapt contemplation of the quintessential Bach. […] The Italian Concerto, too, gains a new lease of life in this altogether splendid version. […] This is a disc which should form part of every Bach lover’s collection.’ - Gramophone, June 1955 (Bach) Tracks: Domenico Scarlatti: Sonata In G Major, Kk 146 Sonata In B Minor, Kk 33 Sonata In A Major, Kk 24 Sonata In D Minor, Kk 9 Sonata In B Flat Major, Kk 544 Sonata In F Major, Kk 505 Sonata In C Major, Kk 132 Sonata In G Major, Kk 169 Sonata In B Flat Major, Kk 202 Sonata In F Minor, Kk 519 Sonata In E Major, Kk 380 Sonata In B Major, Kk 245 Sonata In G Minor, Kk 8 Sonata In A Major, Kk 322 Sonata In D Major, Kk 29 Sonata In G Major, Kk 125 Johann Sebastian Bach: Italian Concerto In F Major, BWV 971 Chromatic Fantasia And Fugue In D Minor, BWV 903

Cesare Siepi, George London, The Roland Shaw Orchestra - Siepi And London On Broadway £6.50 ELQ4820120 0028948201204 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

This recording will make you smile. Two of the most accomplished opera singers of the twentieth century turn their attention to some of the best known songs from Broadway

musicals, and the effect is Wunderbar! Cesare Siepi was a prolific recording artist on 78rpm records before making a number of outstanding LP sets for Decca. His voice was a classic basso cantante – a singing or lyric bass with good upper reach. Being more than six feet tall and with handsome physique, he cut an impressive figure on stage. He brought a dignity to everything he performed. He was a lover of Cole Porter songs and, as can be heard on this recording, enunciated them without a trace of an Italian accent. The lines are delivered with directness and warmth, and with a welcome absence of sentimentality. His tone is dark, smooth and rich, and his style is subtle and elegant. George London began his singing studies in Los Angeles and, by the 1940s was touring with a trio that included Frances Yeend and Mario Lanza. The Bel Canto Trio performed 86 concerts of operatic arias and ensembles throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico between July 1947 and May 1948. The Broadway songs recorded by London in 1957 reveal a singer willing to explore unusual (for an operatic bass-baritone) material, and to invest in it a rich, powerful voice, a subtle array of vocal colours and sensitivity to the character of each piece. Both LPs were recorded with the Roland Shaw Orchestra, a light music orchestra active in the 1950s. recorded by Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge in 1962. The songs, arias and ballads were selected to make up the kind of program which, as contemporary accounts reveal, might well have been given by royal command before Queen Victoria. The pieces range from ‘Ocean! Thou mighty monster’ from Weber’s Oberon to one of Queen Victoria’s staunchest favourites – Home, sweet home. The colourful and fascinating original notes for the LP issue by Andrew Porter are reprinted for this CD issue. Mario Del Monaco; Fraco Ghione; Alberto Erede - Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana, Leoncavallo: Pagliacci £9.25 ELQ4807268 0028948072682 CD2 AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

These new re-masterings cast fresh light on seminal recordings of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci, both featuring Mario del Monaco. He was in his prime when he recorded Turiddu and Canio, and his performances in both recordings could hardly be more spine-tingling. Cavalleria

rusticana was recorded in 1954 and Pagliacci in 1953. Franco Ghione’s feeling for the lyricism of Mascagni’s score is clear from the outset, reminding us that although this music is usually regarded as marking the birth of verismo, it is in many ways a continuation of the Bellinian love affair with the vocal line. Alberto Erede conducts a grippingly dramatic Pagliacci. The scoring is brilliant and Erede makes the most of it. Lavished with praise when first issued, they are released from hibernation to enjoy new life on CD. ‘… a recording of Pagliacci stands or falls by its Canio, and Mario del Monaco has a role which fits him like a glove. […] Clara Petrella has a warm voice, and sings the part of Nedda with great dramatic conviction […] Afro Poli is really excellent as Tonio […] [the performance of the chorus and orchestra] under the baton of Alberto Erede is superb. In fact I have never heard finer choral or orchestral recording than we are given on these discs. […] Probably more important than anything, there is a feeling of cohesion about the whole production, and the discs really do create in most vivid fashion, the atmosphere of an actual performance.’ - Gramophone, November 1953 ‘Elena Nicolai has one of those beefy, beautiful Italian mezzo-sorano voices … it is a magnificent sounding organ, vibrant, passionate, beautifully placed. […] Signor Del Monaco is well cast as Turridu: his magnificent power and rather bullying way with a phrase conjure up well the Don Juan of this Sicilian village.’ - Gramophone, June 1954 Tracks: Pietro Mascagni: Cavalleria Rusticana Ruggiero Leoncavallo: Pagliacci

Pierre Monteux, Vienna Philharmonic & London Symphony Orchestra - Brahms: Symphony No. 2; Variations On A Theme By Haydn £6.50 ELQ4808913 0028948089130 CD AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

Monteux recorded Brahms’s Second Symphony several times; in addition to the present recording for Decca with the Vienna Philharmonic, there are versions with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. He recorded the Variations on a

Theme by Haydn just once, in 1958, with the London Symphony Orchestra. This reissue continues Eloquence’s survey of selected Philips and Decca recordings by Monteux. ‘Monteux gives a fresh, relaxed account of the Second with the Vienna Philharmonic and the spaciousness of his reading is enhanced by the fact that he observes the first movement exposition repeat. […] Recommended.’ - Gramophone, July 1971 ‘Monteux’s account of the [Haydn Variations] is hugely enjoyable and the natural, unforced yet splendidly disciplined orchestral playing makes this record highly desirable’ - Gramophone, June 1971 Tracks: Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 2 In D Major, Op. 73 Variations On A Theme By Haydn

D’Oyly Carte Opera Company, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – Gilbert & Sullivan: The Yeomen Of The Guard £9.25 ELQ4820508 0028948205080 CD2 AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE CLASSICAL

That this recording was made at all is remarkable; that it is, on the whole, a success is miraculous. Though tinged with sadness – the 104-year-old company had just three more years to live – it is a fine swan-song recording for the D’Oyly Carte. Released for the first time on CD.

This reissue continues Eloquence’s survey of selected Philips and Decca recordings by Monteux. With its roots in the mid-nineteenth century English opera tradition of Balfe and Wallace, The Yeomen of the Guard is an integrated hybrid of operetta and romantic opera that combines the sparkling essence of previous Savoy successes with heightened drama and emotion, while its score is also free from the earnestness in which much of Sullivan’s 1891 grand opera Ivanhoe (with libretto by Julian Sturgis) is mired. It is fair to say that, despite maintaining high artistic standards and attracting loyal audiences, the overriding story of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in the late 1970s and early 1980s is not a happy one. Under-resourced and under constant threat of closure, the company which had been founded by Richard D’Oyly Carte in 1875 to perform new works by Gilbert and Sullivan struggled on under an increasingly threatening cloud of uncertainty until eventually giving its final performance on 27 February 1982. Yet there is no sign of this gloomy atmosphere in the present recording – the company’s last – of The Yeomen of the Guard. Neither, other than a few rough edges which could easily have been fixed with retakes if there been enough time or money, does it suffer too much from the unconducive circumstances of the sessions. Taped at Decca’s West Hampstead studios in the miserable depths of winter 1979, with many of the cast suffering from flu, sessions were crammed almost unfeasibly into the company’s busy performance schedule. The set boasts many glories, not least the final recorded performances of much-loved veteran stars John Reed and Kenneth Sandford, both of whom had been with the company since the 1950s. Though a little past their vocal prime, they give masterful portrayals of the lead comedy roles of jester Jack Point and gaoler Wilfred Shadbolt. Reed retired from the company shortly after this recording, continuing to guest star until its closure; Sandford remained until the end. The set is also notable for including the first professional recording of a song which was cut immediately after the work’s premiere – Sergeant Meryll’s ‘A laughing boy but yesterday’, rendered with confidence by John Ayldon. ‘Royston Nash keeps the score moving along agreeably, and there some attractive new voices – above all the Fairfax and Elsie Maynard of Geoffrey Shovelton and Barbara Lilley – to add to such familiar and dependable old-stagers as John Reed and Kenneth Sandford.’ - Gramophone, November 1979 Tracks: Sir Arthur Sullivan & W.S. Gilbert: The Yeoman Of The Guard

Ben E King - The Complete Atco/Atlantic Singles Vol.1 1960-1966 £18.99 RLGM4003812PMI 848064003816 CD2 REAL GONE MUSIC SOUL/R&B

From his early days as a last-second replacement in the Drifters to his sterling solo career during which he scored a total of 31 pop and 24 R&B chart hits, the late, great Ben E. King was

responsible for some of the most indelible recordings in pop music history.

His big, beautiful baritone powered such Hall of Fame songs as "There Goes My Baby," "Save the Last Dance for Me," "Spanish Harlem" and, of course, "Stand by Me," and—almost alone among R&B singers of his era—he successfully transitioned into the disco era of the '70s with hits like "Supernatural Thing" and his acclaimed collaboration with the Average White Band.

Now, Real Gone Music, in tandem with SoulMusic Records, is planning to release two of the most ambitious collections ever devoted to Ben E. King's work, a pair of 2-CD sets containing the A and B-side of every single the man released during his storied career recording for the Atco and Atlantic labels. Long in the making, this first volume features 50 tracks that cover the years 1960 to 1966; many of these songs (especially the B-sides) never came out domestically on CD, and most never came out at all on CD in the original mono single versions found here, all from original tape sources.

CD 1: Brace Yourself / Show Me the Way / A Help-Each-Other Romance (LaVern Baker & Ben E. King) / How Often (LaVern Baker & Ben E. King) / Spanish Harlem / First Taste of Love / Stand by Me / On the Horizon / Amor / Souvenir of Mexico / Young Boy Blues / Here Comes the Night / Ecstasy / Yes / Don’t Play That Song (You Lied) / Hermit of Misty Mountain / Too Bad / My Heart Cries for You / I’m Standing By / Walking in the Footsteps of a Fool / Tell Daddy / Auf Weidersehn, My Dear / How Can I Forget / Gloria, Gloria / I (Who Have Nothing) / The Beginning of Time / I Could Have Danced All Night / Gypsy

Dusty Springfield – Come For A Dream - The U.K. Sessions 1970-1971 £9.99 RLGM4003832PMI 848064003830 CD REAL GONE MUSIC SOUL/R&B

During her 1968-1971 period with Atlantic Records in the United States, Dusty Springfield also continued to record material in England, where her Atlantic repertoire was released on Philips

Records. In turn, Atlantic received rights to issue Dusty's British recordings from the era, but chose to focus entirely on her American sessions.

In fact, it wasn't until the '90s that some of these masters (many of which originally came out on the Philips See All Her Faces album overseas) were available Stateside, but they were scattered across several compilations and were never comprehensively assembled.

Now, with the release of Come For A Dream—The U.K. Sessions 1970-1971, all of Dusty's "orphaned" British recordings from her 1970-1971 Atlantic period have been gathered together for the first time. These 16 sides document what was intended to be a complete album plus some extra single sides and outtakes. Dusty was singing at her absolute best during this time, covering pop, rock and soul with equal power and sensitivity. Tracks: A Song For You / Mixed Up Girl / Wasn’t Born To Follow / Sweet Inspiration / Yesterday When I Was Young / Let Me Down Easy / Come For A Dream / Girls It Ain't Easy / See All Her Faces / Crumbs Off The Table / What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life? / How Can I Be Sure / Goodbye / Girls Can't Do What The Guys Do / I Start Counting / Go My Love / O-o-h Child

Lesley Gore - Someplace Else Now £9.99

RLGM4003852PMI 848064003854 CD REAL GONE MUSIC POP It's hard to overestimate the role Lesley Gore played in charting the course of popular music. Not only was she probably the biggest female teen idol of her era—with four Top Five hits before she was of legal age—but she broke out of the "girl singer" mold

with "You Don't Own Me," the proto-feminist #2 hit that inspired generations of female singers to come.

However, despite Lesley's lofty place in the pop music pantheon, there remain some pretty major gaps in the reissue of her repertoire on CD, notably the lone album she cut for Berry Gordy's Motown subsidiary MoWest, Someplace Else Now. Produced by Joe Porter, this 1972 release marked Lesley's move into a singer-songwriter mode. Gore wrote or co-wrote (with Ellen Weston or her brother Michael, with whom Lesley would later gain renewed acclaim for collaborating on the score to the hit film Fame) every song on the album. Though it failed to make a significant commercial impact at the time, Someplace Else Now has come to be regarded as a lost, blue-eyed soul gem, and it makes its worldwide CD debut on this Real Gone reissue. Tracks: For Me / The Road I Walk / Out of Love / She Said That / Don’t Wanna Be the One / Be My Life / Where Do You Go (When You Get Home) / What Did I Do Wrong / Someplace Else Now / Mine / No Sad Songs / For You

Ben Jorge - Ben £10.99

RLGM4003782PMI 848064003786 CD REAL GONE MUSIC WORLD MUSIC

This replaces RLGM4003572PMI that was due to be released 15th June 2015 If there was one thing that all the movemenst that swept Brazilian popular music during the '60s and '70s—bossa nova, Jovem Guarda, Tropicalia, Música Popular

Brasileira, samba soul, Black Rio—had in common, it was that they all revered Jorge Ben.

That's because Ben incorporated aspects of all their styles without compromising his own. As Caetano Veloso put it, "Jorge Ben, without attempting an artificial or homogenizing 'fusion,' came through with a strong, original sound confronting a body of issues from the opposite end that of the finished treatment, while we were groping and coming up with varied and incomplete solutions." Now, Real Gone Music and Dusty Groove are embarking on a long-awaited tour through Ben's catalog, starting with his 1972 masterpiece, Ben. This is the album that made Jorge Ben a superstar in Brazil, a lean marvel of rhythmic and melodic concision that contains some of his most indelible, durable songs, like the first version of "Taj Mahal" and his ode to his favorite soccer player, "Fio Maravilha." Peerless Brazilian pop, out on CD for the first time outside of Brazil, and packaged inside a mini LP sleeve that exactly replicates the original vinyl release. Limited edition of 2000! Tracks: Morre O Burro, Fica O Homem / O Circo Chegou / Paz E Arroz / Moça / Domingo 23 / Fio Maravilha / Quem Cochicha O Rabo Espicha / Caramba!...Galileu Da Gaililéia / Que Nega É Essa / As Rosas Eram Todas Amarelas / Taj Mahal

Robbie Robertson & Alex North – Carny / O.S.T. £9.99 RLGM4003722PMI 848064003724 CD REAL GONE MUSIC SOUNDTRACK

Though he was one of the three acting leads (along with Jodie Foster and Gary Busey) in the 1980 film Carny, it's debatable how many fans of Robbie Robertson and his work with and

without The Band are aware of this key release in his discography. That's because, despite the pedigree of its cast and the colourful setting of a traveling carnival, the film bombed at the box office, weighed down by a weak script and questionable directorial choices. But the score—half composed by Robertson and half by the great Alex North (Cleopatra, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf et al.) remains a wonderful oddity. Robertson had himself spent two years working at a carnival in his teens, so it was a subject near and dear to his heart (witness The Band's "Life Is a Carnival"). He also reached out to friends like Dr. John and Randall Bramlett to create sonic settings alternately sleazy, strutting and funky (and don't miss his guitar solo on "Garden of Earthly Delights"). North, for his part, seemed affected by what Robertson in Rob Bowman's liner notes to this Real Gone reissue terms the "insane" nature of the film shoot, particularly on the closing "Carny Theme," which Robertson calls "like Nina Rota on acid." Right after the film wrapped, Robertson went to New York to serve as musical supervisor for Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull, which began a long string of collaborations with Scorsese and other film directors. Tracks: Garden of Earthly Delights / Pagan Knight / The Fat Man / Freaks’ Lament / Sawdust and G-Strings / Rained Out / Carnival Bozo / Remember to Forget / Lust / I’m a Bad Girl / Rednecks Rumble / Fear and Revelation / Carny Theme

Mike Bloomfield & Nick Gravenites – Steelyard Blues O.S.T. £9.99 RLGM4003622PMI 848064003625 CD REAL GONE MUSIC SOUNDTRACK

With a killer leading couple of Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland—fresh from their box office triumph co-starring in Klute —and a soundtrack by the Electric Flag's Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites—with performances by Paul Butterfield and Maria Muldaur—you would think that

the 1972 film Steelyard Blues would be better known than it is. Poorly reviewed and largely forgotten by film audiences, it has remained a cult classic because of its soundtrack, which marked Mike Bloomfield's first release of any kind in three years, and reunited him with Gravenites, with whom he'd composed music in the Electric Flag for the soundtrack to Roger Corman's B-movie classic The Trip. Here, the emphasis was less on psychedelia than on a jaunty mix of blues, rock and country to match the shambolic goings-on on screen. There's no mistaking Bloomfield's stinging blues-rock licks for those of any other guitarist, and a pre-"Midnight at the Oasis" Muldaur serves notice of her impending superstardom. Completing the musical cast was Paul Butterfield, in whose band Bloomfield first broke into prominence, keyboardist Merl Saunders, later of course to collaborate with the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, and Annie Sampson of the Bay Area group Stoneground. Tracks: Swing with It / Brand New Family / Woman’s Love / Make the Headlines / Georgia Blues / My Bag (the Oysters) / Common Ground / Being Different / I’ve Been Searching / Do I Care / Lonesome Star Blues / Here I Come (There She Goes) / If You Cared / Theme from Steelyard Blues (Drive Again)
