BOBBY'S KITTEN TO CAMPAIGN IN EUROPEBy Lenny Shulman

Bobby's Kitten is scheduled to enter quarantine

in Florida this week in advance of being sent

to Irish trainer Dermot Weld for a 2016 European

campaign, according to Ken Ramsey, who owns

and bred the 4-year-old Kitten's Joy colt with his

wife, Sarah.

Bobby's Kitten, named after trainer Bobby

Frankel and trained by Chad Brown, won the 2014

Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT) at 6 1/2 furlongs

over Santa Anita's downhill course. This year's Turf

Sprint, in which Bobby's Kitten finished fourth, was

contested over 5 1/2 furlongs at Keeneland.

"If he had won, we'd have retired him to stud,"

Ramsey said. "But he was fourth so we decided

to let him run one more year, and hopefully it will

turn out like Stephanie's Kitten (who won the 2015

Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, gr. IT). There's

just one grade I for turf sprinters in America while

there are a handful of them in England, France,

and Dubai. The plan is to bring him back for the

Breeders' Cup next year at Santa Anita." BH

OAKLAWN PURSES DRIVE STALL APPS WAY UPBy Myra Lewyn

With record-level purses for the eighth straight

year, Oaklawn Park finds itself with a good

problem to have: applications for more than 2,800

stalls—nearly twice what the barn area can accom-

modate—for its 2016 meet, opening Jan. 16.

"What we're most excited about is the quality of

the applications," racing secretary Pat Pope said.

"Currently, we have around 1,500 stalls and, this

year, I only wish we had about twice that many."

Boosted in part by the track's thriving gaming

operation, maiden special weight races will be

worth $68,000—an $8,000 increase from 2015's

first condition book—and open allowance races,

as much as $75,000, up $9,000. Minimum purses

will be $21,000, up $3,000. Overall, average daily

purses are projected at $475,000.

"The quality of our racing as gotten better year

after year as our purses have continued to grow,"

Pope said, "but having American Pharoah win our

two biggest races for 3-year-olds and then the

Triple Crown has really helped create a buzz going

into this meet." BH

KY HISTORICAL RACE HANDLE TOPS $1.2BBy Tom LaMarra

From its launch Sept. 1, 2011, through October

of this year, historical race wagering has gen-

erated "handle" of more than $1.26 billion in

Kentucky, according to Kentucky Horse Racing

Commission statistics.

Over those 50 months, $11.2 million has

been raised for purses, $9.4 million for Ken-

tucky Thoroughbred Development Fund sup-

plements, and about $803,000 for the Kentucky

Breeders' Incentive Fund. Though the ma-

chines—resembling video lottery terminals but

considered pari-mutuel in Kentucky—remain

subject to a legal challenge, they have produced

much-needed racing revenue.

Now in its 51st month of historical race wa-

gering, Kentucky Downs produced $1.12 billion

of the total handle through October, followed

by Ellis Park with $124.9 million. A new facility

operated by Keeneland and Red Mile opened

Sept. 8 and through Oct. 31 had $16.6 million

in wagers, a strong number for a new market

according to officials.

The state receives 1.5%, the regular pari-mu-

tuel tax rate, from historical race wagering. Op-

erators have received about $68.2 million after

the share for purses and breeders' incentives is

deducted. BH

average, and median. Its clearance rate was 85%.

Beeby said Goffs is proactive when it comes to

marketing the sale and catering to buyers in terms of

incentives and a VIP experience in the pleasant sur-

roundings of County Kildare. "Our sales grounds are

as good as any," he said. "And the euro offers value

Europe's breeding stock sale season got underway

Nov. 16 with the Goffs November foal sale—the

session-topper was a €39,000 ($42,019) colt by Most

Improved. Last year's sale was highlighted by Fran-

kel's daughter out of Finsceal Beo realizing €1.8

million ($2,259,720), which helped the gross increase

52% to €27.7 million ($34.8 million). With the 10%

rise in the 2015 Irish foal crop to 8,205, Goffs extend-

ed the sale to five days.

The latest racing successes of 2013 sale graduates

include 2015 juvenile group II winners Donjuan Tri-

umphant, Foundation, Ribchester, and Gutaifan.

Sixteen new sires have first-crop weanlings cat-

aloged, including group I winners Dawn Approach,

Declaration of War, Intello, and Maxios. While the

A NOT SO FINE LINE

Contrary to the wisdom of Spinal

Tap's David St. Hubbins, the line

between stupid and clever is often

quite wide. To play the horses these

days, it seems you have to be either

a genius or an idiot.

Handicappers don't merely

cop to playing "the toughest game

around;" they wear it like a badge

of honor. It's as if racing's infinite

variety of ways to lose—combined

with exorbitant takeout—works

equally well at either trumpeting

your brilliance or excusing your

losses.

Winning horseplayers seem to take tough

beats in stride, trusting that "the breaks" will

even out over time. Losing players tend to see

conspiracies at every turn, and betting into a

pari-mutuel system has a way of making such

delusions seem real.

The Del Mar stewards voted 2-1 against fining

Kent Desormeaux days after his much-criticized

losing ride on 9-5 favorite What a View. The vote

became necessary when Desormeaux's mind or

his conditioning drifted off, allowing a race that

seemed won to be lost by a nose. Even though

Desormeaux has a reputation for occasionally

not finishing races, two stewards gave him a

pass. The split decision enabled losing bettors to

conclude that both the stewards and the jockey

were out to get them.

Lip tattoos and routine oversight have all but

buried the old scam known as "the ringer," but

two weeks ago at Mahoning Valley Race Course

near Youngstown, Ohio, a bizarre variation on

the scheme resulted in the 4-year-old gelding

Leathers Slappin pinch-running for a hopelessly

slow 3-year-old filly named Ruby Queen. In the

official chart "Ruby Queen" won easily at odds of

122-1.

How a twice-victorious gelding made it into

a race for cheap maiden fillies has yet to be

fully explained. While it may have been due to

a series of dumb but honest mistakes, that's no

consolation to the players who backed Jane's

Storm at 20-1. Though no match for the "win-

ner," Jane's Storm did beat all the horses that

actually met the conditions of the race.

Some welcome news for all horseplayers

arrived when the New York State Gaming Com-

mission suspended trainer Roy Sedlacek after

two of his Belmont Park runners tested positive

for the synthetic opioid AH-7921.

Sedlacek reportedly confessed to having

tried to purchase the powerful designer mol-

ecule known as "ITPP" on the Internet, only to

have received instead the eminently detectable

AH-7921. Maybe Sedlacek was no Einstein when

it came to doping horses, but you have to start

somewhere. If racing can't catch his kind, how

will they ever stop the cheaters who know what

they're doing? BH
