MONDIALISTE ON FENCE FOR BREEDERS' CUPBy Claire Novak
Irish-bred Mondialiste will return to trainer David
O'Meara's English yard after taking home his first
grade or group I in the Sept. 13 Ricoh Woodbine
Mile (Can-IT), and though the race is a Breeders'
Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" event, a potential
Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) bid will require further
evaluation of the 5-year-old Galileo runner.
"We'll have to consider it now," said O'Meara,
who collected his first top-level score when Mon-
dialiste split horses with a sparkling turn of foot
on yielding ground to beat Lea by half a length in
1:36.66. "Today was the big race that we had in
mind, stepping up to group I level. The Breeders'
Cup will be under consideration, but we'll just take
the horse home and see how he is. We thought
we'd come here with the long straight and the big
track. I'm not quite sure whether Keeneland would
suit him as well."
Mondialiste won two straight in England before
making his first North American visit, including the
Aug. 22 Betfred Mobile Strensall Stakes (Eng-III). BH

INTERPOL, HABIBI MAY MEET AGAINBy Claire Novak
Newly-minted grade I winner Interpol and the
brave New Zeland-bred mare Habibi could
meet again after their one-two finish in the Sept.
13 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (Can-IT) at
Woodbine.
Interpol, who picked up his first grade I after
a victory in the Aug. 16 Sky Classic (Can-IIT), will
point for the Oct. 18 Pattison Canadian Interna-
tional (Can-IT). Habibi, who went up against males
at the 1 1/2-mile distance that has brought her
multiple victories, will also eye a stakes on Pattison
International day after running second by half a
length.
"We've got to give him a chance in the big race
now. We went this far," trainer Sid Attard said of
the 4-year-old English Channel colt. "He deserves it
the way he's running."
"(Habibi) came very close to winning, which
is nice for her to get grade I-placed here," train-
er Mark Frostad said of the 6-year-old mare by
Ekraar. "There's the Breeders' Cup, or the E.P. Tay-
lor (Can-IT), or the International here. So we'll just
have to see how she comes out of the race." BH
HONOR CODE WORKS, IRONICUS MAY TRAIN UP TO BC Preparing for a probable start in the $400,000 Kelso Handicap (gr. II) on Oct. 3 at Belmont Park, multiple grade I winner Honor Code breezed five furlongs in :59.45 Sept. 12 over the Belmont main track.

might seem American sires are taking a back seat.

KEENELAND HIPS TO WATCH: SESSION 1By Ian Tapp
There is no shortage of impressive catalog pag-
es, prideful breeders, and optimistic consignors
representing the 241 yearlings cataloged for the
Sept. 14 opening session of Keeneland Septem-
ber. The table on the right lists a small selection of
horses that have generated some buzz on the sale
grounds so far.
There are 14 Tapits cataloged for the first ses-
sion, including Hip 73, a chestnut filly out of the
Dixieland Band mare Amelia who has made a solid
impression in Gainesway's consignment. The filly
is a half sister to three graded stakes winners and
is a full sister to He's Had Enough, runner-up in the
2012 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
Among the 11 War Fronts cataloged for Sept. 14
is Hip 106, a colt who is the first foal out of grade II
winner Bauble Queen (by Arch) consigned by Clai-
borne Farm. The War Front/Arch cross produced
the $2.2 million colt that co-topped last year's sale;
a full sister to that colt sells on Day 2. BH

the lead and the other horses weren't getting to
him, it was pretty exciting."
Conquest Daddyo had yet to start when Keene-
land's books were printed, so his name isn't even
on his half brother's catalog page.
"The update is even better because we took
a chance with a first-year sire that didn't have a
high stud fee," Recio said. "It might enhance him
to a different audience—more of an end-user—
but pinhookers love him because he's the kind
you'd want to take to a 2-year-old sale. He vets
very well, and he's an athletic horse that looks like

STONESTREET AD APPEALS TO THE MASSESBy Ron Mitchell
Stonestreet Farm owner Babara Banke's interest in
Thoroughbred racing and breeding is well-estab-
lished, and she wants to share it with the masses. With
some help from what she called "marketing experts,"
Banke ran a full-page color advertisement on the back
page of the Sept. 13 New York Times business section.
The ad featured two-time Horse of the Year and Hill
'n' Dale Farms stallion Curlin, who raced for Stonestreet
most of his career. The promo mentioned that Keen
Ice, who is by Curlin, won the Aug. 29 Travers Stakes
(gr. I) over Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
"The ad is aimed at horse people and other people
who might be interested in horses," Banke said. "We
have great energy going into the Breeders' Cup, and I
hope we can capitalize on it."
The ad notes that progeny of Curlin have earned
about $22 million thus far, and the number could grow
should his runners fare well in this year's Breeders'
Cup. BH
On August 29, Keen Ice roared past American Pharoah to victory in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga.
In doing so, he brought the total earnings of Curlin’s sons and daughters to over $22,000,000 in just four racing seasons.
“As the owners of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, the all time leading money winner in North America and the sire of Keen Ice, we congratulate all those involved in this heroic feat. We also applaud the owners of Curlin’s other world-beating progeny.
Congratulations, Keen Ice, and good luck to all of Curlin’s offspring running in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, October 31 on NBC. See you there!”

TREVE UNSTOPPABLE IN ARC TRIALBy Madison Scott
In one of the most dazzling displays in her
storied career, French racing sensation Treve
dominated the Qatar Prix Vermeille (Fr-I) Sept.
13 at Longchamp. Perfect in three outings this
season, an unprecedented third Prix de l'Arc de
Triomphe (Fr-I) victory looks within reach for the
5-year-old mare.
Fourth in this race a year ago in what was
her only out-of-the-money finish, Treve left no
doubts in her superiority. Treve raced in mid-
pack in the 1 1/2-mile contest and then made a
threatening move to enter contention turning
into the false straight. Angled out by jockey Thi-
erry Jarnet, Treve swept past her opponents in
the stretch with ridiculous ease and drew off to
win by 4 1/2 lengths under little urging. Among
the eight rivals left in her wake was Arabian
Queen, who finished sixth after defeating Gold-
en Horn in her previous start.
Dubawi's Postponed and New Bay won sep-
arate group II affairs on the day at Longchamp
and will make their run at the mighty Treve in
the Oct. 4 Arc. BH

TOP YEARLING CONSIGNORSBy Ian Tapp
With the Keeneland September yearling sale
beginning Sept. 14, let's examine the track
record of the top yearling consignors. The table
on the following page summarizes the top 50
yearling consignors in North America by average
price in 2010-12 and the subsequent racetrack
performance of those yearlings.
Not surprisingly given their large-consign-
ment business model, the leading consignor by
total yearlings sold over the three-year period is
Taylor Made Sales Agency. Taylor Made is tied at
10 with Lane's End for the most grade I stakes
winners offered.
Of Taylor Made's 1,328 offered yearlings,
1,007 were sold. Those numbers were good for
a 76% clearance rate, or 24% RNA rate, approx-
imately the market norm during the 2010-12
sales years. The fact that roughly one in four
yearlings did not meet its reserve price during
this period is reflective of the economic condi-
tions.
Consignors tallying double-digit graded
stakes winners from their 2010-12 offerings
include Eaton Sales (10), Gainesway (17), Hill 'n'
Dale Sales Agency (17), Lane's End (24), Taylor
Made (29), and Warrendale Sales (13).
Greenwood Lodge Farm leads by sale
average at $350,000 for six sold, including a
$1.35 million Awesome Again—Legs Lawlor
colt named Resurgence, who was sold at
the 2011 Keeneland September sale. This
consignor has nine cataloged at this year at
Keeneland, including an Arch colt (Hip 13) in
the Sept. 14 opening session.
Betz Thoroughbreds had the highest
percentage of grade I stakes winners offered
for consignors with more than 50 yearlings
offered thanks to grade I-winning half sib-
lings Hoppertunity and Executiveprivilege.
Betz also consigned grade I-placed Norman-
dy Invasion and Social Inclusion during this
period. Three of these grade I performers were
sired by young or unproven sires: Hoppertunity
was part of Any Given Saturday's third crop; Ex-
ecutiveprivilege from First Samurai's third crop;
and Social Inclusion, Pioneerof the Nile's first
crop. This year Betz has 28 yearlings cataloged,
with 13 by first-, second-, or third-crop yearling
sires including Hip 452, a Bodemeister half sister
to Mine That Bird and Dullahan.
While Sam-Son Farm is the leader by average
racetrack earnings with $350,636, we should
note that Sam-Son offered only seven yearlings
during 2010-12. They also lead by yearlings
whose earnings exceed their yearling price with
80%, and by winners of $100,000 or more with
57%. These figures suggest a small but elite
consignor.
If we raise the minimum to 10 yearlings
offered during the period, the leading consignor
by percentage of stakes horses is Hinkle Farms.
Six (23%) of Hinkle Farms' 26 offered yearlings in
2010-12 have gone on to be stakes horses.
For consignors with more than 50 yearlings
sold during 2010-12, Airdrie Stud has the high-
est percentage of yearlings whose racetrack
earnings exceeded their sales price; 48% of
Airdrie's yearlings earned this distinction, high-
lighting why this consignor is known for good
end-user value. BH
