January 11th, 2015 Baptism of the Lord

Though typically brief, Marks account of Jesus’

baptism features unique insight. Matthew and Luke

describe the heavens “being opened”. But Mark says

“torn open,” for in Jesus the barrier separating heaven

and earth is permanently rent asunder, unleashing the

Spirit to transform, irrevocably and forever, the face

of the earth. That dramatic tearing image, together

with the water and the naming of Jesus as

“my beloved Son,” may also evoke the perils and

promise of childbirth. Hear too echoes of Genesis:

“A mighty wind swept over the waters.” Thus, Mark

reminds us that through our own baptism into Jesus’

death and resurrection, we have been born again and

our lives should bear witness to that reality.

How can I bear this witness this year?

Aunque típicamente breve, lo que Marco cuenta sobre

el bautismo de Jesús presenta una perspicacia única.

Pero Marco dice “rotos,” porque para Jesús la barrera
