Choosing a school based on a single telephone call. A lot of people will call up just price shopping and try to pick a school over the phone. Instead you want to tour the facility take a tour and see all that they have to offer. Most times the cheapest option is not the best option.

Choosing a school without a Money Back Offer. In my view every school should be fully accountable for their instruction and if you don't feel that you improved you shouldn't have to pay for it. Not all schools offer a guarantee. Make sure to ask the school if they offer a money back guarantee offer. I like performance base guarantees, that way your guaranteed of reaching your goal.

Choosing a school without getting testimonials from their students. Any school can say how great they are, but it matters most what their students think about them and the results that they get from training at that facility. This one really drives me crazy, people look for the cheapest option and choose a blue belt or purple belt unqualified instructor. With the popularity of martial arts and mma, you have schools popping up everywhere. This is one of the worst ways to get started in martial arts. In the beginning if you learn a bunch of bad habits then its going to take years to correct them. Make sure you always look for a school that is run by a certified Black Belt under the IBJJF for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Muay Thai under MTIA or for MMA under the MMAIA.

Choosing a Martial Arts School that doesn't use the most up to date cleaning methods. Most schools don't even know how to properly clean their mats and training equipment. Make sure they are at least using the top of the line anti-bacterial and anti-fungal methods. Most schools are too cheap to buy the really good cleaning products. If they even clean it all they just buy the basic cleaning stuff from Walmart and use that. You want a gym that uses the best cleaning supplies available.
