"For a city to be great, it has to be great for everyone." That is the guiding principle behind all the Calgary United Way does in this city - and the inspiration for the organization's first Social Innovation Ideas Festival. The goal is to come up with innovative ways to solve gaps that exist within the city - despite its prosperity - through broader engagement. "It's all about the elements that make a city a great place," said Michael Tims, chairman of Peters & Co. and a longtime volunteer with the United Way. "All the things the United Way and other social services agencies are doing are very essential, but it runs through your mind that there are new and different ways of thinking and addressing the issues." Kicking off tonight - with a talk by Richard Florida - and continuing into Friday, the intent of the oneanda-half day exercise is to engage as many minds - from business leaders to the "Top 40 under 40 set" - in a manner that generates new ideas for ways to make Calgary a better place to live. The president and chief executive of United Way Worldwide, Brian Gallagher, is also in town to participate. "This is about getting our top leaders together and thinking about what it takes to be a better, more supportive city," said Heather MacDonald, vice-president and chief operating officer for the United Way. It's also about establishing a competitive advantage when it comes to fighting the so-called "war on talent" aimed at getting young people to move here, and stay. This issue, by the way, is not just bedevilling the oilpatch - as the current, international recruiting blitz for the South Health Campus illustrates, it extends well beyond the business sector. Florida, whose new book, The Rise of the Creative Class Revisited, is being published next week, will undoubtedly challenge and stimulate a lot of different thinking among the audience. Many lucky enough to hear him when he first visited Calgary several years ago as part of the Stirring Culture series initiated by then-president of the Alberta College of Art and Design, Lance Carlson, still refer to his theory connecting creativity to economic growth. Calgary, as primarily an oil and gas town, is not necessarily seen as a creative centre; no one would argue that its economic growth has been the result of being situated in a province rich in natural resources. But Florida challenges us all to look at the city through a different lens, noting that some cities in the United States might be rich in arts and culture but that this has not translated into a creative, entrepreneurial economy. "Calgary has very definitely emerged as one of Canada's leading creative centres. From what I can see, this is tied to its pioneering entrepreneurial spirit, its economic creativity, so to speak," he said in an e-mail response to a question this week. According to his analysis, Calgary ranks sixth out of 33 metropolitan areas in terms of creativity, second on talent and eighth on technology.

Page 7: 701 North Fairfax Street tel 703.836.7112 2012 UNITED WAY DAY … · 2012. 9. 19. · 701 North Fairfax Street Alexandria, Virginia 22314- 2045 tel 703.836.7112 "For a city to be

So if Calgary has exceeded Florida's expectations, why does the United Way feel the need to gather big thinkers, current and future, to make it a better place to live? One issue that continues to come up on the radar screen, says MacDonald, relates to making Calgary a better place for youths, who face a 14 per cent unemployment rate between the ages of 15 and 24, and future generations. One of the biggest challenges within this cohort remains the fact that high school dropout rates in these parts are close to 30 per cent. In a city and province staring at the very real issue of labour shortages, this should be seen as an opportunity. Standing between students finishing high school and entering post secondary in the form of university, college or trade school could be myriad social issues - poverty to domestic violence - that cause a young person to simply give up. There is also the lure of the big bucks in the oilpatch. That's why the fact the United Way is bringing so many people together this week is exciting for Robbie Babins-Wagner, chief executive of the Calgary Counselling Centre. "So often we work in silos," she said, "it's very rare to bring everyone - business and social services - together. "It's a huge opportunity to learn how we all think; I suspect we will find more commonality in how we think and this should help to come up with interesting ideas to work across the silos," added Babins-Wagner, whose organization had 36,641 client visits in 2011. If one buys into Florida's thesis, Calgary's entrepreneurial DNA should be able to solve these challenges creatively. On a corporate level, it should be a relatively easy sell; having a pool of talent ready to be developed right on the doorstep is potentially less expensive and complex than having to attract talent from elsewhere. While in-migration from other provinces and immigration from outside the country has been of great benefit to Calgary and the energy sector, there is also a perception that the city, and the industry contributing to its success, has become something of an ATM machine. For some, it's a place to hang one's hat for a while but not invest in the city; a place where one can benefit from the economic opportunity but ultimately pass through without leaving so much as a footprint. Too much of that and a city loses its soul. And eventually, it loses people. During the recent provincial election, Premier Alison Redford repeatedly talked about Alberta being a great province - but wanting to make it even better. The same can be said about what the United Way - along with Mayor Naheed Nenshi - wants for this city. One could argue that Calgary, like the province, is at an inflection point in its history. To ensure future growth and prosperity, the gaps identified by the United Way and other social services groups need to be closed so that Calgary becomes known as a place where young, creative types across all disciplines want to come - not just for the job, but to make a life and build community.

Boosting the U.S. High School Completion Rate Requires Early Investment 06/20/2012 Huffington Post, The

This month, graduation caps and tassels will fly as high school graduates get ready to start the next exciting chapter of their lives. While a momentous milestone and a proud occasion for many families, each graduation also serves as a reminder that some students will not receive a diploma this year. America's public high schools are producing fewer graduates -- a quarter of the 3.8 million students who entered high school in 2011 will not graduate. A report by the Alliance for Excellent Education found that if the students who dropped out of the Class of 2008 had graduated, the nation's economy would have benefited from an additional $319 billion in income over their lifetimes. But how as a society can we prevent students from dropping out before graduation? One solution is to look at the beginning of a child's academic career. A strong indicator of student achievement in high school is the skills developed during the elementary and middle school years. Trends across various states and demographics each tell their own story, but the overall message is clear: Students are grossly underprepared in the basic skill sets such as reading comprehension, math and problem-solving that form the foundation of a high school education. A recent Children's Defense Fund report on the state of American children demanded that as a country we need to do more to lift our children to higher academic ground. The report surveyed 30 developed countries on the overall achievement level of 15-year-old students. The United States ranked almost last -- a dismal and unacceptable 24th place -- suggesting that other countries are better suited for high school success. Additionally, 60 percent of fourth, eighth and 12th graders in public schools currently possess reading and math skills below appropriate grade levels. This deficit in basic skills illustrates that we must do more to prepare young students. We must reach them in their earlier years to equip them with the skills that allow them to move up through the school system and be prepared to enter the workforce. Having fewer high school graduates translates into a smaller number of college graduates and a less competitive American workforce in the overall global economy. The choir of voices calling for more college graduates in the areas of math and science is deafening. Companies like Chevron are investing in initiatives that recruit more math and science students to prepare them for jobs as engineers, scientists and other highly skilled positions. These recruitment efforts will not be successful if students are unable to read, write and perform at the appropriate grade level by the time they enter high school.

It has never been more critical to ensure that our children focus on academics from a young age. The summer break should serve as a reminder of how investments made in our local communities can help keep kids on track and improve our children's education. Investing in positive and nurturing community spaces for children is an excellent way to reach them early and keep them on the right path. Whether through a community sports league, a day camp or an art class, these are the outlets where kids learn the critical skills that shape the types of citizens they become as adults. These outlets can be places of imagination, curiosity and learning. They can be where kids build enrichment skills, get active and develop healthy lifestyle choices, and maintain positive self-esteem. Most importantly, they can serve as the bridge that keeps them on a pathway toward success. If we want to ensure better outcomes and brighter futures, we must start within our communities. Providing the kind of support necessary to build strong local communities does not happen overnight and rarely involves just a single actor. That's where you come in. Groups and individuals from nonprofits, the business sector and government must make investments together to help those around them, because individual efforts are not enough. Success flourishes in this country when our citizens join together in a common purpose to improve the lives of everyone. This sense of community and social responsibility is what drives volunteerism that can lead to positive change -- in this case, setting our kids up for greater academic success. In this spirit, each year United Way hosts a Day of Action throughout the country and around the world on June 21, the summer solstice -- the longest day of the year. United Way chapters representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico participate in Day of Action activities such as recruiting readers, mentors and volunteers for projects that benefit local communities. Last year, Day of Action events took place at more than 1,230 project sites, benefitting nearly 250,000 Americans. After 125 years of working with communities, we know it is a collective effort and it is my hope that this year's Day of Action and continued efforts throughout the year, will continue to make progress towards raising awareness and recruiting volunteers. Building strong communities that invest in education will mean a future with more high school graduates, a stronger workforce and a growing economy.

United Way Worldwide Restructures, With A Focus On Global Reach And Getting Involved 06/19/2012 Fast Company

"Business strategy and social impact are a powerful combination, especially when companies fully align and integrate the two," says Barry Salzberg, the newly named chairman of the board of United Way Worldwide (UWW) and global chief executive officer at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL). If you're as surprised as I was to hear United Way described as a global NGO, this is actually recent and big news. In the past couple of months, UWW has been raising the volume on its new identity which had been in the works since 2009 when UW restructured

Page 10: 701 North Fairfax Street tel 703.836.7112 2012 UNITED WAY DAY … · 2012. 9. 19. · 701 North Fairfax Street Alexandria, Virginia 22314- 2045 tel 703.836.7112 "For a city to be

the organization. They flipped United Way's international agency from being an affiliate of United Way of America to being the parent corporation, as UWW. The plan was to build a major global presence in order to partner with international corporations seeking to establish and implement worldwide corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Today, nearly 120 corporations are part of UWW's Global Corporate Leadership (GCL) program. Approximately 60% of GCL companies are on the global Fortune 500 list. UWW has 1,800 community-based organizations throughout the world; 1,200 are in the U.S. and 600 are in 41 countries around the globe. UWW: Transforming its role to global social impact in education, income, and health "We had been a fundraising organization. We are transforming ourselves to be conveners and facilitators of multiple stakeholders--businesses, governments, NGOs, and others--for the purpose of improving people's lives," explained Salzberg. Brian Gallagher is president and CEO of UWW. He described UWW's three areas of focus: education, income, and health. "Each community throughout the world customizes the goals based on their needs,"explained Gallagher. Fundraising does continue to be a vital aspect of UWW's work. They raised $3.9 billion in the U.S. in 2011 and $1.1 billion outside of the U.S.; UWW uses 13% of the funds for its operating expenses. Salzberg's advice to young professionals and executives: Volunteer! Salzberg talks passionately about his own volunteer experiences, which began later in his career. He encourages others to start early. "Although I always contributed financially, I didn't realize how useful I could be as a volunteer," he said. "Once I started, I was really hooked." He first became involved as a board member with the YMCA of Greater New York, which Salzberg was later asked to chair. "From the beginning it was an unbelievable experience. I loved the mission and the work." Next he joined the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which he also enjoyed "immensely." He's now chairman of College Summit. "Before volunteering, I thought that all I could do was give and raise money. That's important and I'm happy to do that. But then that morphs into intellectual capacity and idea generation, and then pro bono service, and that becomes very meaningful," said Salzberg. "It's become a way of life." Salzberg likens his role as chairman of UWW to his role as global CEO of DTTL. "I'm seeing similarities in leading a network of member firms around the world," said Salzberg. "In each case, the network of firms function independently, yet share the same mission, methodology, and commitment to clients." When I asked him if he brings what he learns from his volunteer experiences back to his work at Deloitte, he grinned and said, "You're always learning. You're always bringing it back." "We want to make it easy for people to become involved." Once he became a service-booster, Salzberg determined to make it easy for everyone and anyone at his firm to engage as well. Salzberg credits Evan Hochberg, national director,

community involvement, Deloitte Services LP, with building the firm's leading community investment initiative, including a centerpiece program for "skills-based" volunteering. UWW: Helping you and your company to get involved UWW seeks to make it easy for individuals and companies to engage in improving the world. Here's what they suggest: 1) Look into UWW's Affinity Groups, such as •Women's Leadership Councils that are community-based, and soon expanding globally: a great way to build relationships and influence, while improving the world. •Student United Ways 2) Sign up for opportunities for individuals and companies to volunteer 3) Join in this Thursday, June 21, for UWW's Day of Action.

Asomugha puts hectic first season in Philadelphia behind him 06/22/2012 USA Today - Chicago Bureau

The 2011 season was not a vintage one for Nnamdi Asomugha. After spending his first eight pro seasons in Oakland, the two-time, first-team all-pro cornerback shipped off to Philadelphia as a free agent and encountered a host of new challenges. There were the burdens of moving to a new city and the heightened media focus on the Eagles' much-hyped transformation. He signed with the team days before training camp and after the lockout, joining many teammates unaccustomed to one another who were also getting used to rookie defensive coordinator in Juan Castillo. "The biggest transitional issue was the first few days and just wanting to get my feet under me as far as my occupation, as far as football, and not being able to really do it because I was being pulled in so many different directions," Asomugha said Wednesday at a United Way charity event. "That was very new for me. I don't know if that had a negative or positive impact, but it became the focus, above football, which has never been the case for me." Philadelphia started the season 1-4 but closed with four wins in a row to finish 8-8, but still out of the playoffs. Asomugha was not honored with any individual postseason awards for the first time since 2007. Things are different now, he says. Castillo, much maligned in his first defensive job since coaching prep football in the 1980s, was retained as coordinator and given a full offseason to work. The Eagles are again considered playoff contenders along with their NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys and Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

"There's definitely a different feel to this offseason, a positive feel," Asomugha said. "I've never been the guy that likes to talk too much about stuff before the season, so I don't want to sit here and say that we look perfect, but I will say that we are a better team because of what we've been through. "We did some things technique-wise and scheme-wise that we won't be doing any more. Everybody was trying new things out. Even our coach on defense was brand new. He's now at the point where he knows what's good and what won't work, so that's going to help us out tremendously." Almost two dozen players, including Asomugha, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and Green Bay Packers WR Greg Jennings, convened Wednesday at American University for the United Way Youth Empowerment Summit, for which Asomugha is the national player rep.

Asomugha excited for season | View Clip 06/21/2012 Fox Sports Net HQ (FSN)

I am Matalin -- and I am pleased to be joined by Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. Not the best describe your first season with the Eagles. On the there was interest thing you know there are ups then and downs I don't think we. It did quite as well as who won in two but defensively I think. Know being in the top eight in the NFL was good for us. We have the best record in our division so. There are definitely some positive things that we did that we can build on for this here. Now the Eagles went defense first in this year's draft adding defensive -- Fletcher Cox and

linebacker Michael Kendrick. How you think these additions will impact -- Other gonna help me you know and even even. In addition to the drift. Bringing in free agents. Like DeMeco Ryans. -- OJ Atogwe. You know a few guys that we brought -- they can help us out. In many different areas that I think is gonna help battle you know on the on the defense guys though. Once I saw what we were doing and help the defense I thought it was great. Our offense is so loaded with talent everywhere so -- it's worked out well for us. You mentioned DeMeco Ryans is keep the run stopper the defense needed. yeah. You know what -- but I don't know label him as a rents are because he does so much more than that in on the faxes OTA's and mini camps. Has been all over the field stopping the run he's been doing great coverage. Com so he just has he's got a good grasp on what the defense is going to be asking of him. I'm and we simplified the defense a lot from where it was last so it's gonna help him -- that much more but it is a great addition. We know what he's done in the past season and what he's capable of doing. The secondary will look different and Asante Samuel has been traded to Atlanta. Think Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will fit. Dominique played a little bit last year especially toward that end to win a Sante. And got hurt and that he filled in. Just fine and you know replace than us on today is a difficult thing you know we've he's he's been one of the top guys. In the league several years now but when you've got a guy like Dominique. That can Steffi and it makes that that much easier you know he's been. You know also one of the top guys in the league for some time -- so it's not like your place in us on table with the guys that's a rookie year that's never done it before. -- very capable and that. In my opinion the most athletic league and a talented and gifted. Cornerback. You know possibly in the league definitely that I have ever played with so he should fill in just night. Not what your expectations -- training camp opens next month. You know wanna come wade injury -- that's. That's a big focus for us but we're definitely gonna have. A tough camp. That accountability will be Hughes. -- in camp everybody's going to be working and the mini camps have shown it. -- that we're all on the same page and you know we're just in the process of building. What we expect to be a great team and we knew that wasn't gonna happen overnight. But we're excited about. The possibilities and the things that can come from -- training camp is obviously going to be a huge part of it because that's the the five weeks have held that we go through together and justice to to get that foundation. Finally I understand you teamed up with the united way what are the details. Yet teamed up with united way and we'd we wanted to test of the that issue of high school dropouts. In America which is over a million per year now so. We wanted to we we came with a goal of Clinton and half. But 28 team. Which is a difficult thing to do so. Asked of some my colleagues. From different teams won it and if a player from east team to come and help out. And they've shown up you know guys that are here. Greg Jennings with the Packers is here Cam Newton is here. Michael Huff and you know the list goes on and on these guys have all shown up and the goal here is to recruit. 3000 volunteers each we wanna get one million volunteers -- if we can get 3000 each. A volunteer readers

NFL and United Way team up to tackle dropout rate 06/21/2012 USA Today - Los Angeles Bureau

There are 32 teams in the NFL. There are 53 players on each NFL team. That's 1,696 players who have chosen football as their career and their passion. There are 1.2 million students that drop out of high school every year. That's about 7,000 students a day — 7,000 kids and young adults that decide their education isn't worth it. 7,000 kids and young adults that put passions and careers aside. So what if 32 driven and passionate players pledged to find 3,000 volunteers who are willing to make a dent in the 1.2 million students figure? That's exactly what is happening, and for the first time in the nearly 40-year partnership between the NFL and United Way. The Youth Empowerment Summit is being held in Washington, D.C. from June 19-21: Students, social media interns, teachers, education community leaders and players are gathering at United Way headquarters, American University and Capitol Hill to bring greater awareness, resources and people to United Ways' effort to recruit one million volunteer readers, tutors and mentors. The overall goal is to cut the high school dropout rate in half by 2018. In the opening remarks at the conference, Eric McDonnell, Executive Vice President of the United Way Bay Area, reminisced about a young boy he met named Richard. McDonnell was asking a group of young students what they wanted to be when they grew up, and Richard's answer really stuck with him. “I want to be a pimp just like my uncle,” Richard said. “I want a lot of money, a lot of cars and a lot of girls.” Richard was 9 years old. McDonnell realized then what his passion in life was going to be – helping young kids and students find theirs, and helping them realize that all roads lead to education. McDonnell emphasized the importance of access and exposure to quality literature and books, and the fact that caring adults will always make the difference, no matter the case or situation. “The least experienced educators are in classrooms where children need the best,” McDonnell said. McDonnell said the importance of mentorship, both outside and in the classroom, has never been more apparent.

He majored in corporate finance at the University of California, Berkeley in 2006, and has been the instrumental force behind Team NFL and United Way. “One of the most rewarding parts has been being able to get other players involved,” Asomugha said. “Seeing how many people are involved in this particular event, and know that this came from a conversation I was having with Tracey Holmes from United Way, and knowing that it could build up from just two people talking, that's been pretty special.” Team NFL started with just four players alongside Asomugha: Leigh Bodden of the New England Patriots, Calais Campbell of the Arizona Cardinals, Josh Cribbs of the Cleveland Browns and George Wilson of the Buffalo Bills. Now, 32 players from different teams in the NFL are involved in the cause. “Being here today, seeing people from all the different walks of life, how just a simple kind word or act of kindness or you just caring about somebody can change the world,” said Vonta Leach, fullback for the Baltimore Ravens. “We're going to go back to our respective hometowns, our respective teams and take this experience with us.” Anika Kempe is a senior at the University of Richmond double-majoring in journalism and political science and is an intern for USA TODAY College during the summer of 2012.

United Way Celebrates 125 Years with annual Day of Action | View Clip 06/21/2012 1495sports.com

It is amazing the impact that giving back and helping out others can have, and the United Way organization is one such example of how the power of positivity and giving back can make an impression on all of our lives. Founded in 1887, the United Way movement now celebrates 125 years of advancing the common good, while creating a better life for all by focusing on the three key building blocks of education, income and health. The United Way recruits civic-minded people and organizations to bring passion, experiences and the resources needed in order to make that positive impact happen. United Ways from around the country is currently engaging in service projects, in the Fifth Annual United Way Day of Action. Projects include everything from advancements in education, income and health. The Day of Action will culminate tonight with the lighting of the Empire State Building in blue, which is the United Way's signature color.

There are volunteer activities at service sited around the country, and they will be pared with social media and online advocacy activities to raise awareness around the importance of volunteering. Those on twitter that are volunteering today should tweet #IAmTheChange and #LIVEUNITED and share their experiences on the power of giving back. United Way is currently making a splash in Washington, DC as members of TEAM NFL were seen in action during the United Way Youth Empowerment Summit, which was hosted by American University. The three-day event engages participants in identifying opportunities to improve the academic success of American students and engage in opportunities for NFL players and their supports to recruit readers, tutors and mentors. “Youth involved in mentoring relationships have the opportunity to realize their full potential. Money alone won't solve the education challenge. Communities of support that give their time to advancing and empowering youth create a bright future for all Americans,” said TEAM NFL Captain Nnamdi Asomugha, who represents the Philadelphia Eagles. Representing the local teams were New York Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty and New York Jets Left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson. Members of TEAM NFL are currently on Capitol Hill and speaking to members of Congress about the importance of education and how it impacts the future leaders of America. “United Way TEAM NFL volunteers play an important role in raising awareness and providing inspiration to youth around America. TEAM NFL recruitment efforts will advance the United Way call to activate one million readers, tutors and mentors and improve the academic success of our nation's youth,” said NFL Partnership Director Tracey Holmes

United Way of Central Oklahoma honors donors to building campaign 06/21/2012 Oklahoman

June 21--As United Way of Central Oklahoma gears up for its fall fundraising campaign with its Pacesetter Games and annual Day of Action, both happening Thursday, the organization also is celebrating the culmination of its Legacy of Giving Building Campaign, which raised just more than $5 million.

The campaign's goal was to finish paying for the United Way of Central Oklahoma's headquarters building at 1444 NW 28, which the organization has occupied since December 2008. To honor the corporate and individual donors whose contributions paid for the building and its renovations, United Way of Central Oklahoma on Wednesday unveiled a recognition wall that captures the names of the donors and snapshots of the local organization's history. The wall, located in the United Way lobby, features three panels of historic photos of past volunteers and events dating to 1924. In addition, acrylic plates with the names of the donors surround a larger plaque that thanks them for all their hard work. "It's a wonderful place for the people who will use the building in the future to see whose gifts made the building possible," said Doug Stussi, Love's Travel Stops' board chairman, executive vice president and chief executive. "It's kind of bringing together the past and the present." Stussi has been volunteering with United Way since the late 1970s and said he has seen how the new location has benefitted the organization, its employees and partner agencies, by providing more accessible office spaces for employees and open spaces for meetings and community outreach programs. The building was previously University Place Christian Church, established in 1911. Architect Todd Edmonds with HSE Architects spearheaded the building's redesign, which began in 2007, working with Lippert Brothers Construction. Since acquiring the building, Stussi said there has been a silent campaign of sorts to finance it. "We've been actively soliciting gifts for the building but we've been doing it in a quiet fashion," he said. "We didn't want to detract in any way from peoples' gifts to our annual campaign." The formal campaign began last spring. For the Legacy of Giving Building Campaign, Devon Energy provided the lead gift of $1 million, Stussi said, followed by OGE Energy Corp, The Chickasaw Nation and the E.L. and Thelma Gaylord Foundation with $500,000 gifts. ___ (c)2012 The Oklahoman Visit The Oklahoman at www.newsok.com Distributed by MCT Information Services Copyright © 2012 The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City

based on several factors. New this morning...an alarming number of tri-state third graders are reading below grade level...but today, the united way of adams county is helping change the statistic by donating literacy kits to local organizations. Wgem's lindsey hess spoke with an official with the united way. To hear more about the project, she joins us live in studio with more. Natalie, after learning that 27.1 percent of adams county third graders are not reading at grade level, united way officials chose to make and donate literacy kits for their annual day of action. The kits include a book and an activity to help with reading comprehension, and to make reading more exciting and fun. Plus, the activities help parents interact with their children when reading with them. The kits are for early grade levels...that's when experts say it's especially important for parents to try and turn their children into fans of reading. "those early grades, the early ages are when you can hook a child onto a lot of things good and bad so we're trying to get the positive hook in them and expose them to some fun books and some fun things." hyde tells me that during the summer months, some children fall behind in reading, so it's critical that they keep reading and learning during their time off of school. 72 literacy kits are being donated today to organizations like big brothers big sisters, the salvation army, and more. Lindsey hess, wgem news. The quincy public school board is standing behind it's original deicison.. And unanimously voted not to receive federal funding to give free lunch and breakfast to all students at five qualifying schools. Several parents are frustrated over why the board wouldn't get the funding to help struggling families. But some board members say they still felt uncomfortable giving free meals to kids who don't qualify. "i think the general feeling was is that we have such a high percent of people who are receiving free and reduced already the main folks that would benefit from this expansion are the folks who can afford to pay for it." more than 18-hundred quincy students still qualify for free or reduced price meals...they have to register to receive them. Seven-year safety Antoine Bethea and players from other NFL teams are trying to help the United Way recruit a million volunteers to help America's students. The United Way program is called "Team NFL.” The hope is to get one million people to work as mentors, tutors or readers. Bethea spoke to 24-Hour News 8 from Washington, D.C., where he's helping promote the program and learn more about educational issues. He's attending the United Way's "Youth Empowerment Summit." "It's a lot of kids nowadays with single-parent households and really don't have that role model or a mentor - somebody who can take the time out to read to them or help them with their school work," said Bethea. "I always said if I'm in a situation where I could go out and help, I would do that. That's why I'm really here." There's a contest between the players to recruit volunteers, and Bethea is behind the leaders right now. If you'd like to help him help the cause, you can sign up on his sign-up page .

according to representatives of United Way in Ocean and Monmouth counties. Kelly King, a spokeswoman for United Way of Ocean County, said she was excited last week during planning of what is one of her organization’s biggest events, a “Day of Action” being held Thursday. King said volunteers for the 14 service projects filled up fast, and that volunteerism was up overall for the agencies that make up Ocean County’s United Way. “Gathering volunteers is always a challenge, but we have interest from people in the community all year round. Our volunteer list has grown a lot, and we get volunteer-related phone calls, from teens to seniors. Many people who are unemployed, or working less hours, are looking for ways to volunteer on a more regular basis in order to keep busy and stay motivated throughout their job search,” King said. Tara Maffei, director of the United Way of Monmouth County, said that the poor economy has only helped in bringing more volunteers to the 160 nonprofit agencies that are part of her organization. She credited her organization’s website as a prime tool in gathering volunteers. “We are finding that volunteer numbers have increased and their skill level has changed. I would say that we are seeing more individuals in a job transition that have an amazing skill set. They are looking for ways to give something back,” Maffei said. “Volunteering makes you feel good because you are giving something back,” Lacey resident John Esposito said during a picnic held last month celebrating the Time Travelers mentoring program. The program is sponsored by the Lacey Municipal Alliance, chaired by Heather Scanlon. “This program brings together teenagers who may benefit from some additional time with an adult. It has really worked out as both adults and the young people are learning from each other,” Scanlon said. Scanlon has found that her group’s volunteers have been increasing and are made up of many seniors who donate their time to the alliance and its various programs. Maffei said that her agency is also seeing more families volunteer as an activity to share. She attributes this to the economy. “Family volunteerism is on the rise and I think the economy is contributing to this as families are staying at home more and they are reassessing their values and are very thankful what they have,’’ Maffei said. “Overall, it is a good feeling. A lot of people are economically and spiritually hurting right now and they need comfort. I would hope that if I was in need there would be people out there with compassion,” Mary Ann Murphy of Tinton Falls said. She and her husband Joe and their 8-year-old grandson, Kenny Steppert, have been volunteering for community activities for the last year. “We felt it was important to instill in him the need to help,” Murphy said. The family takes part in the Family Promise program at St. Anselm Church in Wayside. The program is

NFL and United Way team up to tackle dropout rate 06/20/2012 USA Today

Page 42: 701 North Fairfax Street tel 703.836.7112 2012 UNITED WAY DAY … · 2012. 9. 19. · 701 North Fairfax Street Alexandria, Virginia 22314- 2045 tel 703.836.7112 "For a city to be

And what better mentors than NFL stars? Nnamdi Asomugha is the National Team Captain of United Way's Team NFL and a cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles. “We're going to go back to our respective

Nolensville: United Way seeks volunteers for tutoring program | View Clip 06/20/2012 Tennessean - Online, The

If you can commit two hours a week to help a child improve his or her reading or math skills, the United Way would love to meet you Thursday at the Nolensville Public Library during its Day of Action. As a United Way volunteer reads to kids from 10:30 to 11 a.m. during Thursday’s story time, another will be available to talk with parents and would-be volunteers about the new Raise Your Hand Williamson program, which kicked off at Franklin and College Grove elementary schools this spring and is about to expand. “It was very successful,” said Cheryl Stewart, marketing and communications director for United Way Williamson County. There aren’t results yet as far as testing, but principals were extremely happy, she said. The free tutoring program is held in the schools at the end of the school day. Transportation is provided for students to ensure participation in the program. Volunteers work one-on-one with children, so a required background check is provided at no cost to the volunteer. For more information, contact Ann Chester at 615-771-2312 or [email protected]. To volunteer, contact Rick Jansen at 615- 771-2312 or [email protected]. All the libraries in the Williamson County system are having similar events. Pie bake-off: It’s time to dig out grandma’s best pie recipe and take part in Nolensville’s Homemade Pie Bake-Off, part of the Fourth of July celebration. Like last year, only pies made from scratch may be entered. No cobblers, buckles, crisps, crumbles, or tarts will be accepted. They’re just not the same. Prizes will be restaurant gift cards and entry forms are available at Town Hall or online at www.nolensvilletn.gov. The Fourth celebration will start at 5 p.m. at Nolensville Ball Park. Music: Music at Mamas is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Mama’s Java in Brittain Plaza. The lineup will include Russ Roberts, Anthony Corder, Jason Graham, Carrie Moeller and Dirt Pies and Daisies. And Steven Jensen, 16, will be the young one on the bill. For more details, find Nolensville Music Makers on Facebook. Contact Nolensville resident Vicky Travis at [email protected].

Mr. Rey goes to Washington 06/19/2012 Bengals News

Linebacker Vincent Rey isn't wasting any time. After spending the last month at OTAs with the Bengals' AFC North security team of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (head coach Marvin Lewis), Secretary of Defense (defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer), and a special ops exec (linebackers coach Paul Guenther), Rey has booked to Capitol Hill for the first week of his vacation. He left Tuesday for the United Way Youth Empowerment Summit at American University with two students from Cincinnati's Taft High School in the NFL's effort with the United Way to bring awareness to the dropout rate. Then on Wednesday he and other players from around the league meet with their local representatives about educational needs and Rey is scheduled to talk to a potential vice presidential nominee in United States Senator Rob Portman and Ohio's other senator, Sherrod Brown, as well as Rep. Steve Chabot. "Never met one," says Rey of his meeting with the national legislators. "I'll probably get nervous when they're in front of me, but I'm not nervous yet." Rey is part of Team NFL, a volunteer group of players from around the league committed to recruiting one million readers, tutors and mentors. On Tuesday, Rey and players such as Browns wide receiver Josh Cribbs, Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty, and Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings spend the day bonding with their students before culminating Wednesday with what Rey calls a "Super March," to the Capitol to meet the lawmakers. He'll be walking with Taft's Naesean Calhoun and Tyesha Kirk "I wasn't quite sure what it was about, but when I found out it was trying to cut the dropout rate in half by 2018, I wanted to go immediately," Rey says. "When I heard education was involved, that's what I'm all about." Rey, an undrafted free agent out of Duke who has stuck with the Bengals the past two seasons with a brew of brains and speed on special teams and at backup WILL backer, didn't get drafted into this campaign, either. He's been around whenever Lewis has called on his men for his foundation's "Learning is Cool," program and he was here early for this one.

Calhoun and Kirk were part of a Taft class of about 30 that wrote essays on how they would cut the drop-out rate and won a tour of Paul Brown Stadium, where Rey and Lewis spoke to them. Now, Rey is going to be listening to Calhoun and Kirk on a trip where high-achieving students got the nod. "I want to hear what they have to say," Rey says. "I'm not going to be doing much talking. At least at first. I want to find out how they've been so successful." Rey, 24, goes to the Capitol with plenty of ideas about cutting the drop-out rate. A University Scholar Athlete from the National Football Foundation while pulling a 3.5 grade point average to get his sociology and theater degree at Duke, Rey is mulling a master's in education administration. "The answer to me is two-fold," Rey says. "Education starts within the home. The schools should be thinking of ways to stay in contact with the parents to keep them involved. Number two, kids spend more time at school than home (in extracurricular activities) and public schools have to find ways to make sure they have the right number of teachers and be prepared to give kids those after-school opportunities." Rey knows what role money plays. After going to Bayside High School, he left his home in Far Rockaway, N.Y. to spend a year playing at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, and saw the difference in a private school education. But whether it was at Bayside, or Mercersburg, or in grade school, his parents were always pushing school on him and his younger brother. It was only natural since his mother, Caldine, is a guidance counselor at a Brooklyn school. Plus, his father, Lemuel, whose parents came from the Caribbean nation of Anguilla, is a first generation American who has been driving education as hard as he has been driving the A train for the past 23 years under Manhattan. "They've always stressed that education is the biggest thing you need in life to be a success," Rey says. "Right up until the eighth grade I would go to the library every day after school. I had no choice. It was about a block from our house and that's where my parents sent us. I'd have a library volunteer and then I'd go to Pop Warner practice. I started playing when I was seven." The library trips ended after eighth grade because Rey decided to go to high school in Bayside, a rattling four-hour round trip on the train because it was a school with a blue-chip reputation for academics and football. "I haven't decided what I want to do yet," says Rey, who is already on the Paul Brown Plan and preparing for what the Bengals founder called "life's work," after football. Whenever that is. Rey has talked about going back to The City to be a principal, but he knows there are other options. "I don't know if it will be coaching and teaching, or going into administration and being something like an athletic director," he says. "But it will be in education."

Now there's no question that the NFL and United Way already have a mentor for two more children because he says he's ready to be there for Calhoun and Kirk. "I'm not sure what's going to happen after we get back, but if they want me to mentor them that would be great. I'll do it," he says. "Whatever I can do to help." He figures it's been about 15 years since his one trip to D.C. All he can barely remember is staring at the White House. "We were standing outside the gates looking in," says Rey, now headed inside down the street to The Hill.

Saints Partner With United Way For Saints/United Way Community Patrol 06/19/2012 Saints News

In an annual event that has impacted youth throughout Southeastern Louisiana, the New Orleans Saints have once again partnered with the United Way for the ninth annual Saints/United Way Community Patrol camps at the team's indoor practice facility in Metairie, La. Between June 19th and June 26th, six separate one-day camps will take place. Over 600 local children between the ages of 9-13 will benefit from this safe, fun and educational experience. “For the past nine years the New Orleans Saints and United Way have teamed up to host camps for the children of Orleans, Jefferson and five other neighboring parishes that we proudly call ‘our home field',” said New Orleans Saints Owner/Chairman of the Board Tom Benson. “Each year we gladly interact and make a positive impact on the lives of over 600 children and introduce them to the benefits of safe, fun, exciting and educational experiences. We believe that the programs we have implemented through our Youth Programs Department and United Way help to improve attitudes and encourage positive behaviors among the participants.” Over 100 children from St. Tammany Parish traveled from across the lake to participate in the first session on Tuesday. The group was compiled of children involved in the Boys and Girls Clubs of Covington and Slidell as well as various religious youth groups from the northshore. The children were able to visit the Saints facility for a fun day both on and off the field at the same location the Black-and-Gold train. After being split into several groups, the children were led to different stations by volunteers and interns from Loyola University, Louisiana State University, Tulane University, and the University of Southern Mississippi under the direction of the Saints Youth Programs and Community Affairs departments. The stations included multiple football drills on offense and defense, a chance to use an Elmwood Mobile Fitness Unit from Elmwood Fitness Center, and a discussion led by The Children's Bureau. The children also received visits by Saints Punter Thomas Morstead,

Running Back Mark Ingram, and NBA prospect Anthony Davis. The Children's Bureau is a United Way partner that aims to improve the quality of life for children and families. This morning's conversation focused on the importance of emotional control and anger management. They taught lessons on coping, building support, and being a team player while being in control of your actions. Lan Huynh, Resource Development Associate with the United Way, believes that the children in attendance were more receptive to the message because of the fun events that took place in conjunction with the session. The event looks to help improve behavior while still maintaining the children's attention. “We gather over 600 kids in seven parishes to educate and provide an opportunity to improve behavior and attitude towards life and have them come out in a positive way,” said Huynh. “Excellence in both the classroom and on the field goes hand in hand, which is something our players show all the time in their achievements as living proof,” said Saints Director of Youth Programs Jason Trosclair. “These camps are a great opportunity for us to teach and instill some of these same football skills and life skills at the same time.”
