Welcome to Performance Power 2020--our 2020 offering of per-formance Salers, Angus and Optimizer genetics. We have been excited about this group of bulls every since last spring.

We strive to develop these bulls in a manner that will result in max-imum soundness, fertility and functionality. Following weaning, the bulls have been developed on a total mixed ration and run in a 40 acre lot for plenty of exercise. They come to you hardened, sound and ready to work.

After more than 30 years of breeding Salers cattle, we are more enthused than ever about the contribution that Salers genetics offer to the cattle industry. Salers cattle provide many answers in terms of calf survivability, fertility, maternal efficiency, feedlot gainability and carcass quality. And each year more people come to appreciate the true value that Salers genetics can add to the bottomline of their cowherd.

There are some things to note about this year’s sale catalog. One is that EPD’s in this catalog are pedigree estimates. For more information on that, see page 7. Also, our birth weights average a bit heavier than they have in years past as a result of the very cold temperatures we experienced in the winter of 2019. For more about that, see page 14.

Daughters of 291R have sons selling in this sale offering as LOTS 49, 78, 83, 86 and 160. Granddaughters have sons selling as LOTS 7, 77, 143 and 149. A great granddaughter has a son selling as LOT 52.

Over the past 25 years, Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s) have come to be the primary tool that producers use to compare weight performance and other measureable traits between individual animals in order to predict which animals are going to best satisfy the goals of the producer’s breeding program. The advent of genomics (using DNA information to identify some of the actual genes in an animal’s make-up and incorporating that information into EPD’s) has brought major changes to the EPD landscape for much of the beef industry over the past 10 years. Up to this time, Salers cattle have not had genomic data incorporated into their EPD’s. That is about to change within the next few months.

A LEAP AHEADNot only will genomic data be incorporated into Salers EPD’s where available, but the Salers breed is joining a group called Internation-al Genetic Solutions (IGS). IGS is a consortium of breeds including Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Salers, South Devon and others. This organization will be calculating EPD’s for all of these breeds using a multibreed genetic evaluation model. What does this mean for Salers EPD’s in the future? One major change will be that Salers EPD’s will be directly comparable to other breeds also evaluated in this multi-breed model. When you look at Simmental, Red Angus, Gelbvieh or Salers EPD’s, you will be looking at directly comparable

Genetic Evaluation of Salers Cattle Today and in the Futurenumbers. It should also be especially useful in improving the accuracy and usefulness of EPD’s for composite cattle (Optimizers). Finally, in the past, new data submitted to the Salers database has been used to recalculate EPD’s one time per year. That will now occur on a weekly basis in the IGS system. A BRIEF STEP BACKWARDSAs a result of transitioning to the new system there has been no new genetic evaluation done for Salers cattle for the past year. What that means is that the EPD’s in this sale catalog are only pedigree estimates, meaning that the EPD’s were arrived at by adding the EPD’s of the parents together and dividing by 2. The birth weights and weaning weights of each individual bull have not been incorporated into the EPD’s of that animal as they have been in the past. This results in lower accuracy for birth weight, weaning weight and yearling weight EPD’s provided in this catalog as compared to years past. My primary con-cern with this is that if you are going to be breeding first calf heifers you need to look at the birth weight of the bull and put more empha-sis on that as opposed to the Birth Wt EPD than you would need to in years past. The Details of Retained Revenue-Sharing Semen Interest Rights

You may notice in footnotes throughout the catalog that we have noted “retaining 1/2 revenue-sharing semen interest” on a number of bulls. This generally means that these are bulls we are interested in sampling through artificial insemination in our own cowherd. We usually collect semen on these bulls on our farm after the sale and before they are delivered to you. There is no expense to the buyer and we will not let collecting semen interfere with your using the bull for natural service. If at some future point we are able to market semen on the bull, we will share the net revenue generated after expenses on a 50/50 basis with the buyer.

Cold Weather and Birth Weights...A quick look through this year’s catalog will likely reveal that our birth weights are a little heavier this year than what they would normally be. Those of you from the Northern Plains may recall what last winter was like - one of the coldest on record. Below is a piece that I had in our sale catalog a few years ago on the effects of cold weather on birth weights. I am quite certain that the extreme cold we experienced last winter had an effect.

You may have heard the bit of bovine wisdom that “birth weights always get heavier as you go north.” But just how much heavier, and why? These are questions that researchers at the University of Nebraska set out to answer in a research study conducted from 1993 to 1998. Trying to remove the effects of feed and genetics, they plotted the change in birthweights versus the average tem-peratures and windchills through the winter gestation months in those years. Their conclusion was that each 1 degree decrease in average temperature results in about a 1 pound increase in birth weight. The coldest winter of the study had an average tempera-ture 11 degrees colder than the warmest winter and resulted in average birth weights that were 11 pounds heavier than they were in the warmest winter. Why? Researchers theorize that colder weather drives blood flow away from the cow’s extreme-ties to internal organs, including the uterus, thus resulting in a larger sized fetus. Another study by the Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, NE conducted in the 1970’s involved breeding heifers in Nebraska and wintering half of them in Nebraska and the other half in Louisiana. The result? Birthweights from the heifers wintered in Nebraska averaged 20 pounds heavier than those wintered in the south.

Foundation has set up a special memorial fund bearing his name. In honor of Dad’s memory and in recognition of his love for Salers cattle, MacDonald Ranches is donating this heifer calf, selected from some of the best genetics our breeding program has to offer. All proceeds from her sale will be donated to the Memorial Fund. It is our intention to continue to donate a heifer to the fund on an annual basis in order to carry on Dad’s legacy and help to strength-en the future of the Salers breed.

Shown here is a part of our 40-acre bull development pen where our bulls are fed and developed from weaning to sale time. We believe that delivering a sound bull that will stand up and maintain his condition in a pasture breeding environment is a vital part of the success of the bulls we produce. That’s why our bulls are selected rigidly for soundness and fertility and developed on a high roughage ration in this 40 acre pen. They come to you grown out, hardened and ready to work.
