Introducing Johnstown By Dave HurstIf all you know about Johnstown is its lood, you are missing out on much of its history – and a lot of fun!

In addition to being the “Flood City,” Johnstown has

been a canal port, a railroad center, a steelmaking

center, and the new home for a colorful assortment

of European immigrants.

In 2015, Johnstown was proudly named the irst “Kraft Hockeyville USA,” recognizing the community as

the most passionate hockey town in the United States.

If you liked the “Rocky” movies, you’ll love Johnstown. This community

was knocked down three times by devastating loods – in 1889, 1936 and 1977. Each time, our residents honored their dead, rolled up their sleeves,

and rebuilt their homes and businesses.

Visit Johnstown today and you can hear the inspirational stories arising

from the Johnstown loods. But, you can also see how we made steel and mined coal. You can experience our immigrant heritage and arts scene in

the Cambria City Historic District. Or, you can party with us at one of the top-

10 motorcycle rallies in the nation and other irst-rate festivals celebrating music and ethnicity. You can boat whitewater in the Stonycreek Canyon;

ride our byways; bicycle country lanes, mountain bike single-track and cycle

beautifully framed by the scenic Allegheny Mountains.

Johnstown is located just 70 miles east of Pittsburgh (an easy drive

on U.S. Route 22, less than a half-hour north of the Somerset Exit of the

Pennsylvania Turnpike, and less than an hour from the Bedford Exit.

MICHAEL HISTORIC DISTRICT AND 1889 CLUB HOUSESeveral historic structures once part of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club which owned the South Fork Dam and Lake Conemaugh when the dam failed on May 31, 1889. The three-story clubhouse had 47 rooms and lodged most of the members of the club. Hike or bike the... PATH OF THE FLOOD TRAILHistoric walking and bicycling trail following the path of the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889. Interpretive signs relate the story of the rushing waters and the terrible af-termath. At Mineral Point, the trail joins the Staple Bend Tunnel Trail and continues from the Franklin Borough Ball Field to the Johnstown Flood Museum in downtown Johnstown. 125 YEARS AGO… In the waning years of the nineteenth

century, the steel barons from Pittsburgh enjoyed a

private retreat in the mountains of Cambria County.

Known as the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, the

members included Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay

Frick. The club boasted a multi-acre lake, boathouses

and cottages. A large clubhouse served as a hotel and

restaurant for members and their guests. Life was easy

along the lake until the rains came that day. The storm

began on Memorial Day and continued through the

night.

On May 31, 1889, rising water in the lake breached

the South Fork Dam, sending twenty million tons of

water roaring through the Conemaugh Valley. The

massive wall of water destroyed everything in its path.

Houses, railroad cars and other debris all became part of

the deadly mix that crashed into Johnstown and literally

swept the town away. When it was all over, 2,209 people

were dead; but from the destruction rose a spirit of

survival and commitment that is still alive in Johnstown.

STONE ARCH BRIDGEBuilt by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1887, the bridge survived the 1889 Flood but caused greater devastation as lood waters and debris, unable to pass through the arches, caught ire. Westward, ho! CONQUERING THE ALLEGHENIES BY CANAL AND RAILROADIn the early 19th century, the Allegheny Ridge presented a nearly insurmountable obstacle rising nearly 1,200 feet standing in the way of expansion to the west. To conquer the Ridge — and cross it with roads, canals and rail — was a challenge that mustered American ingenuity and established Pennsylvania as an industrial giant. The Pennsylvania Mainline Canal, completed in 1830, was the irst route connecting Philadelphia with Pittsburgh and shortened the journey from three weeks by wagon to four days by railroad and canal. The Pennsylvania Railroad leaped the mountains with an all-rail route, sparking the development of the region’s iron, steel and coal industries. Civil engineering masterpieces such as the Horseshoe Curve and the Gallitzin Tunnels, as well as the vast Pennsylvania Railroad locomotive and car shops in Altoona, established the Ridge area as an early testing and research laboratory for railroading.

Hike or Bike through the irst railroad tunnel built in the U.S.STAPLE BEND TUNNELThis 901-foot tunnel is the irst railroad tunnel built in the United States. In operation from 1833 until 1852 when the Pennsylvania Railroad bypassed it, restorations to the tunnel have revitalized it into part of a ive-mile biking/walking trail. The 10-block community of Cambria City was established in 1853 just after the steel making giant, the Cambria Iron Works became established in this area. A forerunner of Bethlehem Steel Corporation and United States Steel Corporation, the Iron Works attracted thousands of immigrants seeking work in the mills and mines. LORETTO

Loretto, formerly the McGuire

Settlement, was named after the Shrine

of the Holy House in Loreto, Italy, by

Father Demetrius Gallitzin, a former

Russian Prince who renounced his royal

upbringing, enrolled in seminary and

became the irst priest to receive all of his seminary studies in the United

States. Gallitzin, known as “The Apostle

of the Alleghenies”, established the

church and pastored the settlement in

Loretto until his death in 1840. He is

buried in an underground crypt with

his heroic-sized statue standing atop

a monument next to the Basilica of St.

Michael the Archangel. He is currently

under consideration for sainthood.

Another famous Loretto resident

was steel magnate, Charles Schwab.

Born into poverty, Schwab was hired

by Carnegie Steel of Pittsburgh when

he was 17 and worked his way up

to company president by the age of

35. Schwab contributed his inancial resources signiicantly to the people of the Ebensburg/Loretto community

inancing the Carmelite Monastery and the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel.

Cresson workers helped to fuel the

Industrial Revolution. According to

Sr. Anne Frances Pulling in her book

“Around Cresson and the Alleghenies”,

the town of Cresson was a “hub of

commerce when the Pennsylvania

Railroad established headquarters here

with a roundhouse, machine shops

and branch lines.” Besides railroading,

Cresson industries included lumbering,

coal mining, and coke yards. Laborers

resided in company houses located

within one mile of where high society

had built mansions.

The area’s natural beauty of lush

greens and mountain springs served

as an escape for the Pittsburgh elite.

Several built residences here including

J&L Steel icon, Benjamin Jones, and

U.S. Steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie.

Many aluent guests, including President Abraham Lincoln, visited the

elaborate Mountain House. Situated on

a hillside amongst several mountain

WHITEWATER RELEASESThe Stonycreek not only features great whitewater, but it can guarantee it! Just upstream of the Stonycreek Canyon on Quemahoning Creek sits the Quemahoning Dam, which has a 500 cfs release valve. The valve is opened on a schedule that is published in advance, assuring boaters who are traveling some distance that there will be whitewater to boat. Although the releases typically occur every other weekend from April into October, check the updated schedule before you go because the releases sometimes are canceled if the water level is too low in Quemahoning Lake.
