D. Preliminary contacts with the host institution/organization:

#

Explanation

1 Jose Luis Montana was my host. We worked on research in learning from observation. We, along with a member of the Spanish

research institute for artificial Intelligence (Santiago Ontañon) authored a paper on the results of our work.

2 My department has no prior contacts with the University of Orlando. The previous contact was established through Professor

Avelino J. Gonzalez. The contact with Professor González comes from a couple of lectures he gave at my apartment in order to

help and define a course of artificial intelligence. I

3 My research concerns the application of CAGD to solve engineering problems. I'm currently looking for optimum pitch variable

curves to design Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. Whereas I can deal with the kinematic of this problem, I have difficulties with the

aerodynamics. In 2014, the international office of my university published a notice about the Atlantis program. I checked the

research fields of the available host institutions, and I found that the ERAU staff of the department of mechanical engineering

has experience analyzing the aerodynamic of airfoils. I decided to write an e-mail to Professor Gangadharan, because he has

several articles about turbine design, and he kindly invited me to ERAU in order to start a collaborative work.

4 I obtained the Atlantis grant from the University of Jaén (Spain). The international office of my University gave me information

about the University of Central Florida (host institution). I got in contact with professor Avelino Gonzalez via e-mail. I sent him

my CV and a research proposal. He was interested in the proposal and decided to invite me for a research stay at his laboratory.

As far as I know, the department concerned didn't have ATLANTIS cooperation activities before my arrival.

5 The first contacts were with Professor Avelino Gonzalez from UCF who got me in touch with professors Dr. Abdel-Aty and Dr.

Wang.

E. Preparation of the teaching/training period abroad (linguistic preparation, production of teaching material, etc.):

#

Explanation

1 No teaching was involved other than two lectures on my research.

2 As a result of these contacts, I organized an undergraduate course in artificial intelligence at my university, a short course of

master and together have written a paper that has been published in a prestigious journal (see Santiago Ontañón, José L.

Montaña, Avelino J. Gonzalez: A Dynamic-Bayesian Network framework for modeling and evaluating learning from observation.

Expert Syst. Appl. 41(11): 5212-5226 (2014)).

3 My preparation was focused on reading articles about wind turbines design and different works of professor Gangadharan.

4 Preparation of my research stay was focused on reading papers related to the proposal in common. After reading those papers,

I sent an abstract to an International conference, which was accepted. I prepared the final paper during the research stay at

host institution.

5 As my stay reason purpose was to research, all my efforts was drive to know the lines of work of the people with which were

going to work.

F. Content of the activities:

#

Explanation

1 The work was strictly research. The results of the visit have been a new collaboration with Dr. Montana on machine learning

from observation.

2 Throughout the period of visit I made contact with staff personnel of international relations Orlando-UCF, the dean of the

faculty of computing and director of the department and other teachers and researchers.

3 The idea of this visit was to start a cooperation between ERAU and UJA departments of Mechanical Engineering. We prepared a

proposal of research project in the field of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. These are the main goals of the proposal: Regarding to

Research: • Develop a method to study the aerodynamic-inertia interaction in conventional Darrieus turbines and variable pitch

ones. • Based on the aforementioned study, design and manufacture a VAWT with a variable pitch mechanism. (We have

already a CATIA model and a real 70 cm x 60 cm 3 blades mock-up) • Apply the theory of Design of Experiments to validate the

study, and to get more inside about the problem. Regarding to Industry: • Contact potential partners. • Try to get a patent.

Regarding to Academics: • Share knowledge and resources between research groups. • Development of Degree thesis, Master

Thesis and Doctoral thesis. • Research project applications (in USA and/or in Spain).

4 During my research stay in the University of Central Florida, I was preparing a paper about international education and

university cooperation in the field of Technology and Science. In collaboration with the aforementioned American University and

the University of Santísima Concepción (Chile), my research group and I were trying to find out the differences and similarities

between the American and European educational systems. Based on the data collected and some ratios calculated, main

characteristics of each educational system were drawn. Results of the investigation performed will be published in an

International Education Conference, (e.g.: International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies "ICERI 2015"

which will be held in Sevilla (Spain), on 16-18 November 2015) or in an International Journal of Education. Moreover, I was able

to explore the possibility of designing and optimizing a vertical axis wind turbine, in collaboration with an American research

group from the Embry Riddle University.

I. If yes, please specify:

#

Explanation

1 There was no work plan per se, but we made much progress in our collaborative works.

2 A lot personal and professional relations.

3 Additionally to the research work, I learnt how the ERAU staff mentor undergraduate and PhD students.

4 I met some professors and PhD students from other University different from the host institution: Embry Riddle aeronautical

University (Florida), who are working in wind turbines design. Nowadays, I am the mentor of a PhD student who is designing a

vertical wind turbine. Thanks to the Atlantis grant, I have a new partner from USA to apply for a research project related to

renewables energies.

J. Remarks on positive elements and/or difficulties encountered:

#

Explanation

1 The visit was very positive in all aspects.

2 No difficulties have been encountered, on the contrary, great facilities and a great human and professional atmosphere.

3 Positive elements: ERAU staff, potential research collaboration Difficulties: bureaucracy

4 Positive elements: meeting people from different countries is enriching. Very good experience. I met very nice people during my

research stay and I know I can count on them for researching purposes. Difficulties: Very complicated process for obtaining J1-

Visa: expensive and complicated.

5 About positive elements I can highlight that my participation in an important team with this research have given me new

perspectives how to operate in many cases. Also new lines of research have been opened to me. About difficulties not more than

the typical to adapt to a new team and new people.

N. Recommendations to disseminate and exploit the experience/results of your mobility in your department/institution:

#

Recommendations

1 None

2 As a result of these contacts, the Faculty of Sciences, University of Cantabria has started to send students to Orlando UCF and

vice versa.

3 I would like to apply for a cooperative research project based on the proposal developed during the mobility.

4 I was pleased to explain how the University of Central Florida works to new researches who have recently obtained the Atlantis

grant: the check-in process, facilities available, teaching and researching staff, etc. I would be pleased to do it again on demand.

As a result of my research stay, I have prepared a paper to be sent to a conference. The paper is the result of collaborating with

a professor from the University of Central Florida together with a researcher from the University of Santísima Concepción

(Chile). The acknowledgement section will contain a reference to the Atlantis grant. This paper will be disseminated in the

annual report of my department/institution, in the same way as the rest of papers published in my institution.

5 It could be interesting to have a meeting with my partners in my department and researching group to share with them some

interesting aspect of my experience in UCF.

O. Suggestions:

#

Suggestions

1 None

2 Essentially it would be enough keep the system having sufficient funding to survive.

3 More information and help to fulfill the bureaucracy.

4 For researches that are going to a North American institution for the first time, additional help is needed to realize how to fulfill

all requirements specified in the J1-visa.

5 I think it could be interesting that in each university participating in this program there was a coordinator that can easily get in

contact different researchers of these universities. This is the main goal, because many of us don't know what's doing the

others.
