This pandemic prevents us from being in church together but nothing can separate us from the love of God. Join us online for Mass.

April 26, 2020 Third Sunday of Easter

F irst Reading: Acts 2:14, 22-33

The reading we hear from the Acts of the Apostles represents a sample of the earliest

apostolic preaching about Jesus. Peter proclaims to his fellow Jews that God has raised Jesus of Nazareth from death because of his faithfulness.

S econd Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-21

This excerpt from the First Letter of Peter admonishes its readers to remember their

responsibilities in Christ. Because they have been made holy by the shedding of Christ’s blood, Christians have a duty to conduct themselves in a manner befitting sanctified people.

G ospel: Luke 24:13-35

This passage from Luke’s Gospel recalls the mood of Jesus’ friends after witnessing his

execution. Filled with distress, the followers of Jesus are convinced that their movement has been crushed, even though they have heard rumors that Jesus has been raised. Perhaps reflecting the experience of the earliest Church, they learn that it is by sharing in the Lord’s Supper that Jesus’ living presence is perceived and celebrated.

We invite you to prayerfully reflect on the Readings for the week of April 26

Monday Acts 6:8-15; Ps 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30; Jn 6:22-29 Tuesday Acts 7:51—8:1a; Ps 31:3cd-4, 6 and 7b and 8a, 17 and 21ab; Jn 6:30-35 Wednesday Acts 8:1b-8; Ps 66:1-3a, 4-5, 6-7a; Jn 6:35-40 Thursday Acts 8:26-40; Ps 66:8-9, 16-17, 20; Jn 6:44-51 Friday Acts 9:1-20; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Jn 6:52-59; Mt 13:54-58 Saturday Acts 9:31-42; Ps 116:12-13, 14-15, 16-17; Jn 6:60-69 Sunday Fourth Sunday of Easter Acts 2:14a, 36-41; Ps 23:1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6;

THE RISEN LORD ON THE ROAD TO EMMAUS

. . while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.

With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him . . . Luke 24: 13-35

Here is a reflection I hope you will enjoy.

Kathleen and Harry met in college, “directionless and broke, barefoot on the path of life,” they remember. Something clicked and the couple embarked on a journey together that has lasted 45 years. They established careers, married, had two wonderful kids. Like every good marriage, they celebrated moments of ecstasy — and, like the best of marriages, conquered the obstacles and survived the hardships.

Forty-five years later, with the children raised and settled with families of their own, Kathleen and Harry looked ahead to a new chapter. But that all changed with three words: “You have cancer.” And so began a new journey — one of uncertainty, hope and fear shifting with every CT scan and lab result. The cancer is inoperable and incurable, but doctors tell them that it’s controllable through chemotherapy.

On this new road, Kathleen and Harry are traveling light, stripping away the excess baggage of their lives, relentlessly rooting out the things they don’t use, need or want. The days of detailed calendars and planners are over — now they focus on the here and now. They will always worry about the future of their kids and grandkids, but the endless noise of politics and division don’t even register. The day-to-day stresses of building and maintaining a lifestyle no longer matter. They read more; they talk more. Their daily routine has become more interesting, more relevant. Volunteering and community work are more fulfilling.

Harry writes of his and Kathleen’s life in an essay in The Boston Globe: “Our hearts and minds are much fuller . . . There’s no telling what this chapter in our lives will bring. Or how long it will last. Inevitably, one of us will start a new chapter alone, but it’s nothing we need to think about right now. As we strip away the distractions and detritus of 45 years together, we are, once again, getting closer to what we were in the beginning: barefoot on the path of life.” [From “Getting Back to What Matters Most” by Harry Viens, The Boston Globe Magazine, February 2, 2020. Used with permission of the author.]

A couple travels the hard road between Good Friday and Easter, seeking to live these days to the fullest. What illuminates their road to Emmaus is the love of God that first “clicked” for them 45 years ago

and continues to be a living reality in this new, unpredictable chapter of their lives. God travels with us on our own roads to Emmaus; God is present in the broken bread of compassion and healing we offer and receive from our fellow travelers. Easter faith is to recognize God in our midst: in our wanting to understand, in our struggle to make things right, in our brokenness. May this Easter season open our hearts and spirits to recognize Christ among us in every moment of our lives, in both the bright promising mornings and the dark, terrifying nights. (Connections)

In Christ’s Peace, Father John

Assumption Parish Morristown, NJ

OUR HEARTS WERE BURNING Jesus promised to be with us always, but often we

fail to recognize him because we have different ideas of what he must be like. For example, maybe we expect to see a glorious Lord and he appears to us instead as a simple walking companion.

Adults: Have I ever experienced Jesus walking with me in times of trouble? How did I recognize him and how did I respond to his presence?

Children: Do I feel Jesus near me when I am troubled or sad? What do I talk to him about?

A Family Perspective: Families, as the domestic church, have the opportunity to make the family meal a time of prayerful encounter with one another and with Jesus. At a family meal we share our experiences of the day and connect them with the experiences of others in the family. We can also enjoy the meal as an opportunity to reflect upon our family life in light of Scripture. At their best our family meals can connect us to Jesus too. As you eat, talk together about how the disciples discussed their experiences in Jerusalem and how they came to understand them differently when Jesus interpreted those events in the light of Scripture.

FINANCIAL BLESSINGS Assumption is a Tithing Parish

I continue to be uplifted by the faithfulness of our parishioners. So many of you are watching our livestreamed Masses and services. I pray that one day soon we will be together in our beautiful church.

Our collection last week totaled $14,031. Our Easter collection to date totals $109,495.00.

Happy Easter. We continue to celebrate that Jesus is Risen! Thank you for all the hope you provide by your most generous donations to Assumption each week. I deeply appreciate your continued support of Assumption. You are always in my prayers.

PRAY FOR OUR ESSENTIAL WORKERS

Our book of intentions is always open in our church, for parishioners to write the names of those they would like us to pray for. At this time, so many of our family and friends are not able to stay at home during this pandemic, and are going to work each day, performing essential duties that allow us to stay at home. If you would like to add a name (or names) of an essential worker to our book of intentions, please email us, and we will add the names to our book of intentions and pray for them at each Mass.

If you are an essential worker, please accept our gratitude and prayers. We thank you for your courage.

The following article may remind us of some of those people who are working to keep our community, our nation, and our world going. May God bless and protect them all.

SEEN AND REMEMBERED:

OUR ESSENTIAL WORKERS Nurses, doctors, paramedics, technicians and other

hospital workers earn the gratitude of the world right now. They risk their lives for others — what genuine heroes do.

But, there are many other people we might overlook who are also essential in these extraordinary times.

I took a run the other morning. It was still and quiet, but I was surprised to see how many people were up, about, and still working in a city in which "nonessential workers" have been told to stay at home.

I saw bus drivers and taxi drivers, who may have taken some of those hospital workers to their 14-hour shifts, along with stock workers and cashiers who work in stores, so we can still buy food, milk, bread and coffee. I saw truck drivers steering rigs with pictures of fruits, vegetables and meats painted on their sides. Long trucks pulled up at pharmacies to bring in medicines, soap and candy. Delivery service vans, their drivers balancing boxes in their arms.

I passed a few stores that weren't shuttered, and saw bakers and cooks in the windows, rolling out pizza or pita dough, slicing sandwiches and stirring soups to be picked up or delivered to people who have been stuck inside, and may feel anxious, edgy and hungry.

I saw security guards on patrol in front of office buildings and theaters, and maintenance workers, wearing dark green, gray and blue informs, often with their names sewn over their hearts, in masks and gloves in front of buildings, ready to unplug toilets and unstick elevators.

I saw sanitation workers, in dark blue uniforms, roll out trash bins to lift them into the backs of trash trucks. I waved at the people at work in convenience stores and, yes, the liquor shop. I saw police officers on the street, and construction workers, in boots, masks and gloves, still digging into those streets to keep the city's power and plumbing running. I heard a rumble from under a grate along the street from the subway, and thought about people riding those trains to many of the jobs I'd just seen.

These days, we are surrounded by essential, extraordinary people. https://www.npr.org/2020/04/04/827110608/opinion-seen-and-remembered-our-essential-workers

PRAYER TO END THE COROAVIRUS O clement, O loving, O sweet Mother Mary,

We, your children of every nation, Turn to you in this pandemic.

Our troubles are numerous; our fears are great. Grant that we might deposit them at your feet,

Take refuge in your Immaculate Heart, And obtain peace, healing, rescue,
