Message from Father Robert:

A couple weeks ago I went into the “Catacombs” of the Scala Sancta just to inspect the area. When I went in I was surprised how many statues were damaged including a beautiful one of “the death of St. Lucy.” Then I came upon an amazing one of the Resurrection which is not completely damaged, but needs some work. Sadly, we cannot see it since for safety reasons the “Catacombs” has to be locked. In a strange way for this year we are living that reality of the “Catacombs” of the Scala Sancta. Namely, for safety reasons we cannot see the beauty of the Church’s celebration of the Resurrection: see the beauty of the Triduum, hear the readings and hymns, nor sing the with the Church the glorious news she proclaims Christ is Risen!

However, there is one thing about the statue of the Resurrection in “the Catacombs” which caught my attention, the angels. The Angels there kneel down in adoration on both sides of Christ as bursts forth from the tomb, while the Roman soldiers turn back and cover themselves from the sight. The angels were the invisible witnesses of the Resurrection, and communicate to us the message of the definite victory over sin and death. It was an angel who said to the women that came to the tomb “Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come; see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. Lo, I have told you.” (Matthew 28:5-7)

Likewise, we can learn an important lesson for this year from the statue in the “catacombs,” even though the statue is hidden from the general view of the public, it is still there. Even though we cannot celebrate Easter as a community, we still celebrate it because the Resurrection did happen. The message of the angel gives us words of eternal hope that Christ is Risen so that, even in the midst of the temporary sadness of this pandemic, the eternal joy of the Resurrection still prevails. May God bless you and may the joy of these days fill your hearts with consolation and hope. On behalf of Fr. Urbano, Deacon Santos, and myself a blessed Easter to everyone. Christ is Risen! Indeed He has!
