• In the late 1970’s Top of the Pops began playing music videos.

• In 1981 MTV played its first music video which was by The Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star“. This sparked the beginning of music on television around the clock everyday of the year.

• The introduction of music television led to a greater importance of creating a music video which would lead to sales. Acts such as Madonna utilised this opportunity to incredible levels.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

• In 1983 “the most successful, influential and iconic music video of all time was released”.

• It was the “Thriller” music video by Michael Jackson. It was nearly 14 minutes long and likened to a short movie.

• The video cost US$500,000 to film and set new standards for the music video industry.

• Jacksons other music videos including “Billie Jean” and “Beat It" were said to be the turning point in getting African American artists onto MTV which had been accused of racism in its short past.

• In 1995 a video director called Romanek produced the most expensive music video ever. It was the “Scream” video by Michael and Janet Jackson.

• During this period MTV globalised and created music video channels in countries all over the world.

• In 2005 YouTube revolutionised the music video industry as it created an opportunity for anyone with access to a computer and a video camera to create a music video. This possibility led to internet music sensations such as “soulja Boy”, “Justin Bieber” and “Gangam style”.
