Thank you
Welcome to IndieCork 7!
We’re a little surprised but delighted to find ourselves seven years old this year! Our delight is in presenting our strongest programme yet. The festival is book-ended by two strong Irish comedies and in between we have films from the Sundance, Berlin, Cannes, Rotterdam, Toronto, and Venice festivals among others. We are also honoured to screen three Irish world premieres - one fiction and two documentary features.
A founding purpose of IndieCork is to serve as a platform for emerging filmmakers and we present 12 programmes of new Irish short films, including three programmes of shorts competing for our Best Emerging Irish Female Director award. We welcome all those presenting their films to IndieCork audiences as they set out on their filmmaking careers.
A huge thanks to our sponsors, Blacknight and other funders for their crucial support to our programme and venue partners, to the IndieCork Members, to our many volunteers and of course to our supporters and audiences.
IndieCork is an international festival and, after seven years, one with an international reputation. However, we’re conscious of our place within the local creative community – of filmmakers, musicians and artists and for us this is important. Cork is a creative place and we’re proud to be part of that. Thank you for joining us for this special week!

Lea Tsemel defends Palestinians: from feminists to fundamentalists, from nonviolent demonstrators to armed militants. As a Jewish-Israeli lawyer who has represented political prisoners for five decades, Tsemel, in her tireless quest for justice, pushes the praxis of a human rights defender to its limits. As far as most Israelis are concerned, she defends the indefensible. As far as Palestinians are concerned she’s more than an attorney, she’s an ally.
Advocate follows Tsemel’s caseload in real time, including the high-profile trial of a 13-year-old boy, her youngest client to date, while also revisiting her landmark cases and reflecting on the political significance of her work and the personal price one pays for taking on the role of ‘devil’s advocate’.

With its dizzying diversity of wildlife, trails of curious humans in RV’s and billion-year-old geology, the film is a geyser of provocative ideas and heightened sensations related to the sublime circuitry that connects us to our ever-shifting surroundings. “Something actually new and full of life came in the form of freewheeling audiovisual essay, Becoming Animal... A big-screen viewing recommended.” Sight and Sound

In a politically-ruptured Hungary, left-winger Ferenc Gyurcsány battles against nationalism. Twenty-eight years after the fall of communism, and on the eve of a new presidential election, Hungary arrives at a political crossroads. Is it another four years of far-right populism, with Viktor Orbán, or will former Prime Minister Gyurcsány and his pro-European left-wing party prevail? This film transcends political battles and seeks to understand the rise of nationalism, and right-wing extremism in Europe. The majority of the crew still seek anonymity out of fear of revenge under Orbán’s regime.

A documentary on the life and work of one of Ireland‘s greatest prose writers, Aidan Higgins (1927 – 2015). “This is a rich filmic profile of a complex artist. Indeed, it succeeds at two levels, which is unusual. It is both a revealing portrait of a complex man but also of the complex body of work he has left behind him.” Tom KilroyDirector Neil Donnelly will attend the screening.Source: [email protected]
Lamis and Wilson are migrants in New York. She’s a Lebanese who’s just arrived, and he’s a Brazilian who’s lived there illegally for 10 years. A hybrid narrative constructed with a poetic approach; a travel diary that becomes a chronic and takes us into the essence of human micro-politics in times of globalization: an uncertain kingdom of desire, hope and fears.
“A poetic, philosophical, romantic tale told using elliptical images and literary voice- over, While We Are Here is a delicately crafted Brazilian gem that proved one of the finds of this year‘s Rotterdam Film Festival.” Film Review
Rotterdam Film Festival, 2019
To the occasional random visitor the quiet courtyard with its dreamy linden trees presents itself as an enchanted garden right off the busy life of Torstrasse. ‘What does it mean to inhabit a space?’ asks filmmaker and resident Matthias Lintner at the beginning of the film. The answer lies in the affectionate portraits of his neighbors. The director closely watches and listens to his house-mates, who have built a world of their own, and refuses to focus on the outside world. Ideas on vacantness and void appear as a subversive act against the utopia of the well-ordered spaces and echo the thoughts of writer Georges Perec, his quotes adding an essay-like layer.
Alessandro and Pietro are 16 years-old and live in Naples, district of Traiano where, in the summer of 2014, Davide Bifolco, also 16, was shot by a policeman who mistook him for a fugitive. They are inseparable friends, Alessandro works as a waiter in a bar, Pietro dreams of becoming a hairdresser. Alessandro and Pietro accept the director’s proposal to shoot themselves with an iPhone, commenting live on their daily experiences, their close friendship, their neighbourhood, and the tragedy that ended Davide’s life.
“I cannot forget that the story that sparked off my project, the tragedy of Davide’s death, is all about injustice and the pain and marginalisation felt by a boy, his family, his friends and their neighbourhood.” Agostino Ferrente

Steamin’ + Dreamin’: The Grandmaster Cash Story - 10th Anniversary Screening (+ Stevie G)Back in Twenty Nattin Nine, one documentary changed the face of Cork hip-hop. Controversial, shocking and hilarious, “Steamin’ + Dreamin’: The Grandmaster Cash Story” quickly became an audience favourite with its loveable characters, quotable lines and savage tunes. Don’t miss your chance to see this cult classic - back on the big screen for the first time in 10 years! Also on the night will be a brand new short film, a special video message from Dr. Feekinstein, a Q+A with the filmmakers, and a DJ set from Cork legend Stevie G.
Wednesday oct 9th Blacknight @ Dali / 7.30pm / €8
Beatlebums: The White AlbumThe Beatles 1968 ‘White Album’ has a unique place in the history of popular music, having emerged during a tumult of social change. Its songs are incredibly diverse in style, and though some are household favourites others are highly experimental, political and still challenging. To mark the 51st anniversary of its launch, Cork’s own Beatlebums will perform the entire album from ‘Back in the USSR’ to Goodnight’. And you can sing along! A splendid time is guaranteed for all!
Thursday oct 10th The Guesthouse / 7pm / €6
Angel: An Evening Without Scott Walker (1943-2019)Scott Walker’s musical journey took many unusual turns. In the 1960’s he was the poster boy of the Walker Brothers, but his ambitious solo work took him far from the mainstream rock scene. His last decades produced his most stark and artistically uncompromising material. This even, in partnership with The Guesthouse, presents responses to Walk-er’s music by renowned Irish sound artists.
Friday oct 11th Blacknight @ Dali / 7pm / €8
Myles Manley + ShithättShithätt are the hättest garage/noise band to ever come out of Co Mayo. Live, they are simply blistering. And..after two years of trying we have managed to book them on their farewell tour so this is definitely not a gig to miss. As if Shithätt was not enough, they are paired this evening with the magnificent Myles Manley and his long-term collaborators Chris Barry and Solamh Kelly. The Thin Air describes Myles as a ‘completely one of a kind artist with a brilliant and unconven-tional mind.’ You won’t hear pop as intelligent as this anywhere in Ireland.

Natasha Bourke is a Cork-based Interdisciplinary artist with an extensive movement background. Her practice embraces Film, Installation, Drawing and Performance Rubblebubble is a sister installation work to Concrete Keys, Bourke’s upcoming experimental feature that poetically examines the individual’s place in a rapidly transforming vision of institutional society.
This installation is constructed using segments of Concrete Keys and additional material gathered during the filming process. Featuring Coneface, Bourke’s performance alter ego, the work was primarily shot in the old Cork Tax office and includes demolition footage of this local Brutalist landmark. Change The Beat!
Director: Colm Walsh Year: 2019Country: Ireland Running Time: 10 mins, plus panel talk
The 25 young asylum seekers, refugees and migrants who are featured in this documentary, participated in a music-themed art project here in Cork City during Summer 2019. Working with local artist Shane O’Driscoll and the UCC Lewis Glucksman Gallery team, including Tadhg Crowley and Lucia Taeubler; the young participants created original artworks for public exhibition. In this documentary, we showcase that work and present the young people’s reflections on the importance of music in their lives - how it impacts on their identity, influences their style, shapes their sense of self and their sense of well-being. The screening is preceded by a panel discussion.
* A short dance performance before the screening will be performed by young people engaged in dance classes through the Cork Migrant Centre and Music Generation Cork, facilitated by Stephen Grainger (‘Stevie G’) and choreographer Andrea Williams.
The Change the Beat! art project was funded by the Arts Council. Research on its impact and this documentary, was funded by the Irish Research Council. Research is conducted by Dr Eileen Hogan and Dr Caitríona Ní Laoire, School of Applied Social Studies, UCC, in partnership with UCC’s Institute for the Social Sciences in the 21st Century.
Date: 8th October Time: 11am to 12pmVenue: UCC Kane Auditorium B10.B
