On Monday, we were lucky to be invited to take part in the RSL’s 2019 Remembrance Day celebrations.
Our little ‘poppies’ were incredible! Every Student understood how important it was to remember the fallen,
returned and currently serving men and women protecting our country.
Alice Hermansen asked every student to make a poppy, that was added to an equally impressive wreath
that was placed at the foot of the cenotaph.
Our School Captains Max and Zara prepared with Meredith during the week and read ‘In Flanders Field’
beautifully.
A huge thank you to Brent Rogers and the Cockatoo RSL for once again putting on a wonderful ceremony.
Today our Grade Four students, 31 in total with our 2 Grade Six bike Ed
experts and 17 parents and teachers set off on our annual Rick Annal, ‘Have a
Go’ bike camp.
Rick was a much loved member of our School Community and our Teaching
Staff. Maria, Rick’s wife was a dedicated integration Aide at Cockatoo for
many years. Rick loved sports and especially bike riding. He loved them not
for the accolades, not for the medallions and not for the first place finishes.
Rick loved them because everyone, no matter how tall or short, clever or rich
could all HAVE A GO!
In 2012 when Rick was tragically killed, doing what he loved, Kaine (former PE
Teacher) and Mal organised the first ever Rick Annal ‘Have a Go’ bike camp.
Kaine and Mal both believe heavily in this philosophy and still, Kaine in his
community and Mal still in our local community invest heavily in kids of all ages
Having a Go! At Cockatoo, we have continued the annual Rick Annal Have a
go bike camp and I’m so pleased to report that it is one of the most looked
forward to events in the students schooling.

Today as we ride, we ride with Rick and his family, especially Maria his wife. Today we HAVE A GO and
push through all the obstacles that might try to stop us and today we do this as a TEAM.
I cannot wait to report about the adventures in next week’s newsletter.
On Wednesday, our 2019 HPV Team will make the long trek up to
Maryborough to compete in the 2019 Energy Breakthrough.
The AWESOME team is made up of;
During the year, they have all been busy preparing their bodies,
minds and equipment for this competition and we wish them and
their families the very best of luck!
The team will compete in a presentation, design and
construction, scrutineering, obstacle course, time
trial and an eight-hour endurance. You can join in
also and watch their eight-hour endurance, through
live results on the Energy Breakthrough website
between 1 and 9pm on Saturday the 23rd of
November.
A HUGE thank you to all of the families that have
put in countless hours to ensure the team is in the
best shape they can be to compete. I would like to
take this time to acknowledge a few individuals for
their efforts. Ellen and Amanda have worked
through many lunchtimes and playtimes with the
students and by themselves completing paperwork and other documents. Ladies, you did it not for praise
but for the love and enjoyment that the whole team will have on the weekend. I hope you realise how much
we appreciate your efforts and that, during the weekend you know that our success is a direct result of your
dedication, love and passion for this activity.
I only have one more thing to say…
Go Cockatoo
Blazers!!!
Cockatoo Primary School No 3535. Website – www.cockatoops.vic.edu.au
Unfortunately, to end this newsletter I have a little bit of sad news. Tuesday night, sometime between the
hours of 11pm (because I left at 10:35) and 7am our school was vandalised with graffitti. This was a
pointless act as no students or community idolises graffiti! We also, not on the same night but during the
last fortnight have lost our beloved chickens, not to natural causes.
The police are taking both incidents very seriously. If anyone has any information, I urge you to contact the
Emerald Police on 59540200.
If you are enjoying our school grounds after school, on the weekends, live close by or are even driving past
and you see something not quite right. Please report it either to a staff member or, if it is the weekend or of
a serious nature phone 000. Our school works very hard to keep our grounds, building and equipment well
maintained and for the whole community. It would be a shame if this had to change due to vandalism
Thank you to everyone for your support in this matter and to the local Police who have been marvellous and
extremely efficient through this process.
Once again GO COCKATOO BLAZERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
