Step 1 - Learn
Rule 1 - Use your course outline or syllabus
• Don’t know where to find my course outline or syllabus –
ask my teacher today (it should be in SEQTA).
• Get a copy of this ASAP
• Take notes during term - make notes on each bullet point
in the course outline, use examples, worked problems
and mind maps.
• Check notes against course outline or syllabus
• Use the Traffic Light System (Red, Yellow & Green)Slides created by JSRACS, based on the presentations from Elevate Education. Traffic Light System -Red, Yellow, Green
For each bullet point
• Know it – highlight it in green
• Okay, but need more practice – highlight it in yellow
(must be lighter colour than green, so you can go over it
in green once you do know it.)
• Don’t know it – underline it in red.
Eventually you want everything highlighted in yellow or
green, and with enough practice everything can end up in
green. This gets rid of any gaps in your knowledge.

Practice – Do practice questions.
Final week before exams = Practice.
Use text books and study guides that have exam style
questions in them. Do additional questions from your
text books.
• 1st – do them open book and open time. Check your answers.
• 2nd – Get assistance and learn the bits you don’t know.
• 3rd – Build up to closed book and set time
• Final practice under exam conditions – always mark you work
against an answer key or answers in the back of the book.
• Prior to final Mock exams and WACE exams do as many past
ATAR exam papers as possible. Try for 2 or 3 papers per
course. Slides created by JSRACS, based on the presentations from Elevate Education. JSRACS summary of information presented by Elevate Education in Term 1, 2018. For more information go to the Elevate Education student portal. Students have been given the password to access the premium site
Creating is crucial in order to stand outExtra reading – gives breadth of knowledge and depth of knowledge. Manage your time so that you make time for study.
1. Cover core content as you go – use your text books. Do extra reading on the content. Stay up to date and read ahead.
2. Check course outline – make sure your reading covers the course outline and is relevant.
3. Use the traffic light system – make sure everything is green in your syllabus and notes. Don’t have gaps in your knowledge.
4. Create notes to cover the whole course – use colour and mind maps. Don’t use too many words, don’t crowd the page.
5. Do extra practice questions – practice getting it out of your brain onto paper. Practice, practice, practice. Lots of practice questions!
