And it mustbe remembered that the entire expense is borneby the National Treasury.
Those who are so anxious for a City Government should notice the difference that Las takenp lace in the list few months in the administra-tion of affairs connected with the city. Thestreets are beinjr cleaned and repaired :- A
wharves repaired, and all the old obstructions'.removed ; new storehouses and bridges completed;j delinquent licenses arc being collected, and new
ones required to be taken out. In short, therust is being cleaned off the machinery, and it isnow beginning to run smoothly, and without jaror noise. We do not hesitate to assert that,under the present system, our municipal affairsare managed as discreetly and efficiently as wouldbe possible under any form of City Governmentthat could be devised, and far more econo-
mically.

may mention that at Waikiki, by Capt. Whitney,also those cf the Messengers of Aliiolani Hale, andof the printers connected with the Kuokoa newspaper,at the residence of Mr. Napoleon. This last wasgot up in really good style, and was much enjoyedby the numerous company present.
Everything connected with the day's festivetiespassed el pleasantly, and no accident or other un-
pleasant accurrence happened to mar the generalenjoyment.
We gather the following from the Report of theFinance Committee : Total amount subscribed bycitizens $518 ; entrance fees, making a grandtotal of u84. The entrance fees covered the neces-
sary expences, leaving the subscriptions to be divid-
ed for the prizes, which were greater than everbefore distributed here ou a similiur occasion. TheCommittee thank the pnblic who so kindly aidedthem, in . making the sports a success, by theirliberal contributions.

44 While you fellows out here are crying outagainst oppression, I don't think you know any-thing about it. You know nothing of the slaverywhich we at the East are suffering. This is so, at least in our great city,where I see wealthy men rolled in a sea oftrouble and helpless. In the wave of disasterthat has passed over this country everybody hasgot to suffer some.'
After some further elaboration on this point,with some suggestions in respect to public edu-cation and the law of progress, Mr. Beecher wenton to say :
44 1 have a strong leaning to the Darwiniantheory, though 1 am not a technical Darwinian.I think that evolution is the theory of nature. 1
think that all men in the Church who are wellinformed agree in this, sharing the opinion withsuch eminent scholars ns Dr. McCosh, of Prince-ton College, in whom the Church has conf-idence."
44 Taking Agassiz's view, perhaps?"44 Yes ; or Cope's or Wallace's. As to the
general facts there can be no manner of doubtamong thoughtful and religious men who havereached forty years of age, The theory is goingto revolutionize theology."
44 What will be its effect on religion?"44 I don't think, in the long run, religion will
be injured. On the contrary, it will be helped ;
that is, man viewed from the moral side will bebetter when all these scientific truths shall besurely known. Theology I deem to be an attemptto account lor all the moral facts of the universe.The method of accounting for these facts, whichwe call Calvinistic, seems to be less and lessapplicable."
44 Will not what is called orthodox religionsuffer from these onslaughts of science?"
Mr. Beecher paused, looked a little doubtfuland then said :
44 I think not. My impression is that theNew Testament contains more scientific truththan we give it credit for. Wero Paul alive nowI think he would shine as an evolutionist."
Before continuing bis theological discussion,Mr. Beecher diverged a little, to give a disserta-tion on the Chinese question. He said : 44 Iam against you ; yet I am here as a student,bound to make every inquiry. I have alwaysbeen an abolitionist. I am a Democrat in the-ory too much of one to belong to the Demo-cratic party. 1 am a friend to the laboring-me- n,
but I don't believe in coddling them and moan-ing over them. I think our workingmen arelargely responsible for the ills they suffer. Theywant the ability to come to the front, to takepart in the affairs of life, and in legitimate waysto compel the righting of their wrongs."
Perihelion and Pestilence.
Wc advise the reader of the following to remain cool in view of the prospect before him inthe course of the next seven years. The besttbiDg he can do will be to keep his soul and bodvclean of all deadly things, and to look sharplyafter his sanitary surroundings :
If there is anything in 44 astrological criology,"we are approaching one of the most pestilentialperiods of the earth's history. Since the com-mencement of the Christian era, the perihelia ofthe four great planets of the solar system Jupi-ter, Uranus, Saturn and Neptune have not beencoincident. But this is about to occur, and, inthe language of Dr. Knapp, who has traced thehistory of the greatest epidemics that ever afflicted the human race to the perihelia of these plan-ets, there will be 60on 44 lively times for the doctors. The theory is that when one or more ofthe large planets is nearest to the sun, the temperature and condition of our atmosphere arc sodisturbed as to cause injurious vicissitudes, terri-ble rains, prolonged drouths, etc., resulting inthe destruction of crops, and pestilence amonghuman beings and domestic animals.
Dr. Knapp has collected a mass of statisticaldata, all going to 6how that perihelion data havealways been marked by unusual mortality, andthat 6ickness and death have invariably "corre-sponded with the planets in perihelion at thesame time. The revolution of Jupiter round thesun is accomplished in a little less than twelveyears ; of Saturn in a little less than thirty years ;of Uranus in about eighty-lou- r years ; and ofNeptune in about 1G4 years. If it be true,therefore, that the perihelia of these planetsoccasion atmospheric conditions unfavorable tolife, pestilential periods should occur once in adozen years, and aggravated and still more wide-spread epidemics at longer intervals. In tracingthe history of epidemics for more than 2,000years, JJr. Knapp finds the facts m all cases tovalidate the theory. Thus in the sixth, andagain in the sixteenth centuries, three of theseplanets were coincident in perihelion, and thosewere the most pestilential times of the Chris-tian era.
But soon we are to have, for the first time intwo thousand years, all four of these planetsagainst us. lfcey will be at their nearest ap-proach to the sun in or soon after ISsfO, so thatfor a lew years, say from 1SS0 to 1SS5, the vital-ity of every living thing will be put to a severeand trying ordeal. Some persons think they sec,in the signs of the times, evidences of the greatdisasters in the immediate fut ure. The excessiveheat, the unexampled cold, the prevalence offlood and disasters at sea, the general failure ofthe potato crop, the widespread chill fever amonghuman beings, and the equal prevalence of theepizootic among animals, are mentioned as amongthe premonitions of the rapidly approachingperihelion.
Well, 44 to be forewarned is to be forearmed."Accidents excepted, wc know very well that the

A newspaper is a tremendous speaking trum-p-e- t.
What a great paper says goes thunderingand echoing round the world. Everybody mustbear and attend. But a lie can thunder quite asuproariously as the truth. And as the hearer orthe reader cannot know the motive of the speaker,who may be interested in making a lie as sonor-ous as the hearer must be on bis guardconstantly, not to believe merely because there issuch an overwhelming noise.
This is especially to be remembered now whenalmost daily the gentle reader will see in his pa-per some important statement in regard to sameimportant person which is wholly untrue. It ismade generally with detail and precision. It hasthe air of all the other information in the col-
umn. It is elbow to elbow with an undeniabletruth. There is apparently no more reason fornot believing it than for discrediting everythingelse in the paper. Time, and place, and person,and remark are all quietly and circumstantiallytjkl, and it is a lie. Or, again, it appears undera slight veil of insinuation. The mischief doneby these two methods of slander, the one directand the other indirect, is incalculable ; and thefault is not primarily with the newspaper, butwith the gentle reader in fact, with the respect-ed unit of the community who is now glancingat these words.
There is no-suppl- where there is no demand.Such lies would not be told if they were not readas news that is, s truth by the gentle reader.The remedy lies, therefore, with him, and it isvery simple. It is merely that he shall confidein character. He has only to trust his knowl-edge against a cloud of lies, and the cloud willcease to form. The character of the press doesnot depend upon the editor and the reporter only,but quite as much upon the reader who makesevery kind of public life more diflicult by believ-ing whatever an irresponsible and anonymouswriter may choose to say. Sin of Suicide.In the Advocate, of which CounseilorShupe is
the editor, the organ of one wing of he Laborand Greenback party, we find a discusion as tothe causes of suicide. This crime has .reatly in-
creased in the United States within a ry recentperiod, and the remarks made by thispaper mayhave a real truth at the bottom. Crtainly theChristian philanthropist will think ttem worthyof profound consideration :

seem to be giving way. In this age of free thinling, scientific in-
vestigation, and universal critcism, one by onethe great truths contained ii the Bible, thecorner stone of our religious tystem, are assailedor doubted, and tie faith whi:h has been handeddown from geru;ra:ion to geteration questioned.The consequences are inevitable. Destroy thefaith of men in thj Bible and the great truths itteaches, remove the restraints of religion andteach annihilation and you will reap, withoutthe aid of insanit;, a harvest of suicides that willastonish the woril."
