A Note from Pastor Al Cassel

HE IS RISEN INDEED!

Easter this year is on April Fool’s Day. How grand! I am reminded of the Apostle

Paul’s words that basically state that what is foolishness to the world is the hope of

all who believe. Yes, life wins. Yes, love wins. Yes, God wins.

I once was challenged by a friend who acknowledged that he was surprised that ‘a

guy as smart as me, still believed in fairy tales.’ I responded by asking him what he

believed to be the foundation for civilization? He spoke of the desire for more, the

hunger for ‘progress,’ the need to compete, and the hope for community. I did not

deny what he had said, but I asked isn’t there something more?

‘Isn’t life born out of love?’ I asked. He nodded his head yes. ‘Isn’t love the

cornerstone that holds families together? To love and be loved, is this not the most

basic of human desires?’ Again he nodded yes. I went on to say, ‘And doesn’t a

little bit of us die as we expose ourselves to love? Do we not risk losing ourselves

for the sake of loving the other?’

If love means risking your life for the beloved, then this story of Jesus is no fairy

tale. This is the one story at the foundation of our world. I cannot imagine a world

crafted out of anything but love because I cannot imagine life without love.

Furthermore, knowing human beings for what we are, torn apart by our desires,

competition, and hungers, I cannot imagine that such boundless love that lives

through death could be somehow manufactured out of our own brokenness.

Yet it can be crafted out of God’s willingness to be broken. Easter is the celebration

of true love, a love that literally takes on death so that the beloved may live. My

friend may have called this a fairy tale, but I find it to be the one story that makes

sense of the world in which we live. Yes, some may think it foolish to believe there

is a God, and that this God could personally love us and even die for us. I, however,

believe that if love is the foundation of this world, then that love is bigger than us. It

makes sense that love comes from ‘God’ and it is the nature of love, the nature of

the world, and the heart of this story to celebrate that love leads to resurrection and

new life. For me it is no fairy tale, but it is the story of my life.

A Note from the Parish Administrator by Lesley Moosman

Hello, Easter People! At every turn of our Lenten journey,

we’ve experienced love winning...

Love wins when our youth share their stories in worship.

Love wins when volunteers work together to build a Habitat

for Humanity home for a family. Love wins when

FaithChests are built or quilts and banners are sewn with love

for Faith Stepping Stones. Love wins when the Homework

Center volunteers work with neighborhood kids, and they get

involved in our story. Love wins when Simple Supper and

Faith-Full Wednesday connects us through food and

fellowship. Love wins when Growing Disciples learn about

our story and get involved in the life and ministry of Peace.

Love wins when our Young Hearts Theater Group explodes

with children who want to be part of a larger story that builds

their confidence and friendships. Love wins when our youth

plan for camp and mission trips. Love wins when Stephen

Ministers and Pastoral Assistants connect with those in need.

Love wins when our prayers lift up the cares and concerns of

others. Love wins when we listen and open our hearts to God.

Now the season of Easter is here, not just one day, but a

season that stretches from Easter morning to Pentecost that

we can fill with “Love Wins” moments! Thank you for being

a part of our community of Peace, and all that you do to bring

God’s love to others in our neighborhood and the world

beyond. As we journey from Easter to Pentecost, it is my

prayer that you will experience Easter joy!

Check out the monthly calendar for opportunities at Peace to

connect, serve, share and grow at Peace. Reach out to us at

[email protected] or call the church office if you need help

connecting or to share your “Love Wins” story!

May your Easter season be filled with JOY!

Winter Visitors

It has come that time we wish adieu to our

winter visitors as they begin streaming back to

their homelands further north. We will keep

you in our prayers for safe travels, delightful

reunions, and we anticipate welcoming you

back again in the fall. We hope you can stay

in touch through our webpage and newsletter.

Bon Voyage!

Homework Center

We have been having lots of fun at the After School

Homework Center! We do arts and crafts, reading, and

outdoor play, but most importantly we do our homework,

with the help of some amazing volunteers. We are always

in search of new volunteers, so if you have a passion for

helping children, please contact me, Shannon Cassel. My

email address is [email protected].

Preschool Ministry

After a very busy March, the Preschool is heading into a

calmer April and then the end of the school year.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for dinner at Chipotle.

That fundraiser brought in about $250 for the school. The

March 2nd Trike-a-Thon in our parking lot was a huge

success earning $1,400 for the Preschool classrooms. The

parents and children all had a great time. Several of the

parents were very surprised at how many laps around the

parking lot their two or three-year-old child completed. And

our bake sale on Palm Sunday brought in $410. We

appreciate your support!

Our April fundraiser, being held April 16-26, is collecting

used clothing for Big Brothers Big Sisters. For every pound

collected, the Preschool will receive funds to be used for

learning tools for our students.

A Valley Metro city bus visited the school on March 7. This

is an annual favorite. All our students boarded the bus for a

tour and sang The Wheels on the Bus. Each student then

had their picture taken in the driver seat before receiving a

city bus coloring book and crayons.

Our April event is “Parent’s Day” to celebrate our Preschool

parents. Our parents will join their children on Friday, April

20, for games and snacks on the Preschool playground. The

children will make gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day

for their parents. This is something the parents have been

asking for. The staff is busy planning games and making

gifts for the parents.

Graduation for the 4 and 5-year-olds is planned for May 24

at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Everyone is invited to help the

children and their families celebrate moving up to

Kindergarten.

We are currently accepting enrollment for our summer camp

(ages 2-7) as well as Fall 2018 (ages 2-5). We have a

stimulating learning environment with activities that address

spiritual, intellectual, emotional, social, and physical aspects

of each child. We appreciate your referrals!

Thank you for your love and prayers.

For more on Peace Lutheran Preschool contact Shirley Leistikow at 623-972-1076 or [email protected].

Children’s Ministry

April 1st is Easter Sunday! An Egg Hunt and fun activities are being planned for our

children. The egg hunt takes place following the 10:00 am

service: Preschool through Grade 2 will find their eggs on the

Education Building playground; Grades 3-6 will have their egg

hunt on the outside areas.

Faith Stepping Stones On April 15, the children completing recent instruction will

receive their First Communion: Beckham Giger, Aubrey

Hehn, Whitney Hehn, Zane Morales, and Londyn Williams.

On April 22,, our 5th & 6th Grade class will share the Apostles’

Creed faith step during the 10:00 am service. They have been

learning it all year in Sunday school!

Wednesday, April 25th Faith-Full Wednesdays end for the school year.

For more on Child & Family Faith Formation contact Kimber Govett at 623-972-6785, x216, or [email protected].

From the Youth Director

This month the youth will begin fundraising for their summer

programs. Our first event is the Easter Breakfast, starting at

8:00 am on Easter Sunday and goes until 10:00 am. Donations

are welcome! Youth and their families are also welcome to

join together to attend the Crowder concert on April 8. If you

are interested, please contact Hannah.

Mt. Cross deposits and registrations are due by April 12. If you

have any questions about camp, contact Pastor Al or Hannah.

Be sure to register at www.peaceaz.org to help with VBS—

group guide, crafts, drama, games, music, preschool groups,

snack-making—lots to choose from! Hurry! Our first meeting

is April 29!

Please keep our youth in your prayers as the school year comes

to a close and we get ready for Vacation Bible School, Mexico

Mission Trip, and Mt. Cross!

We will be helping at the Lutheran Thrift Shop on April 21.

Adopt-a-Street Clean Up is April 14. Sunday School, grades 7-

12 is at 10:00 am in the Music Room.

If you are interested in teaching the youth life skills such as

cooking, basic auto repair, budgeting, applying for colleges,

Faith Full Wednesdays

We will meet throughout the month of April before taking our

summer holiday. Join us for a meal at 5:15 pm followed by

activities for all at 6:00 pm. For adults, we will offer two

opportunities at 6:00 pm:

Centering Prayer – continuing to deepen our faith

through this ancient ritual.

Violence Forum – an open-ended, safe conversation

about gun violence and the church.

Forum on Gun Violence

In the past, the church has attempted to be a place where

followers of Christ could, in love, wrestle with the difficult

issues of our surroundings. In the past, we have had

meaningful conversations about war, sexuality, and

economics. We have attempted to give people tools to engage

in these conversations knowing that as followers of Christ, we

are called to be about the ‘salvation’ of the world.

Following Easter, in light of the many conversations that are

happening in our society about guns and violence, we are

offering a series of forums to have conversation. The goal is

not to convince people that one is right and another is wrong,

but to pray, to educate, to listen, and to grow as a result. We

want to provide a safe place to have these conversations. (If

we cannot join in such dialog, how will we ever come to

meaningful resolution of these issues?)

So please join us on Wednesdays, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, as

we wrestle with a topic that is on everyone’s hearts. Pastor Al

will serve as our moderator and guide.

Centering Prayer Workshop April 28, 9 AM - 1 PM

Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that can serve to

prepare one to receive the gifts of God’s presence. An

Introductory Workshop will be held at Peace Lutheran

Church on Saturday, April 28, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The

workshop is presented by members of the Contemplative

Outreach of Phoenix. Centering Prayer is for anyone seeking

a deeper relationship with God. Participants are encouraged

to attend five weekly sessions following the workshop—dates

and times to be determined by participants. The sessions

provide support and encourage those who wish to establish a

daily centering prayer practice. Contact Lisa Weichart of

your interest at [email protected].

Book Discussion Group The Peaceful Readers Book Club will meet in the church

Library at 7:00 pm on Monday, April 23. This month we are

reading a non-fiction book, Code Girls: The Untold Story of

the American Women Code Breakers of World War II, written

by Liza Mundy. Refreshments are provided; bring the

beverage of your choice. Please call Audrey at 623-815-

4708 if you are interested in our group.

Experiencing Difficulties? A Stephen Minister can help.

There are times in our lives when every single one of us

experiences difficulties. God never intended for us to go

through these experiences alone. This is when a Stephen

Minister can help. Stephen Ministers are members of our

congregation who have received training to minister to people

experiencing a crisis or going through a difficult time in life.

A Stephen Minister will meet with you privately and

confidentially to listen, care, encourage, support and reflect

Christ’s presence in your life. We currently have Stephen

Ministers available. If you would like to learn about having a

Stephen Minister, or you know someone who could benefit

from a Stephen Minister (inside or outside our congregation)

contact Pastor Al, Cindy Staggs at [email protected]

Lunch Bunch

The Women's Lunch Bunch meets on the second Wednesday

of each month at CoCo's Restaurant, 9801 West Bell Road, at

11:30 am. All women of Peace, and friends, are welcome to

join in fellowship over lunch on April 11. Call Carol Cook,

623-825-2849, or Melissia Huchette, 623-877-0925, if you

have questions.

AmazonSmile

AmazonSmile is a website operated by Amazon with the

same products, prices, and shopping features as Amazon.com.

The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile, the

AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase

price of eligible products to the charitable organization of

your choice. You can allocate your gifts to Peace Lutheran

Church and School.

Electronic Giving

Most of us have set up repeating payment with our utilities or

our mortgage holder. We may even have an account to repeat

purchases that we frequently use.

You can exercise the same convenience in giving to the

church. It makes life easier for you and for your church as

well.

You can contact the office for assistance or simply go to our

webpage (peaceaz.org) and click on the ‘Quick Links’ to

scroll down to the tab for online giving. Thanks.

Giving Generously

Generosity is one of the core values of Peace. Last year we

were able to give over $125,000 away to ministries beyond

our walls. Generosity, however, begins with the people of

Peace. You are the ones that enable this congregation to be

known as a church that gives.

We are celebrating Easter this month—a

celebration of the Good News of the resurrection.

We celebrate that this is a time when the church

was reborn. Will you consider making a special

gift of $10 this month toward our children’s

ministry as they prepare for VBS? Together our

gifts can make a big difference toward a ministry

that reaches over 250 children and another 50

youth who serve as guides. Thank you.

Choir Continues

The choir will rehearse on Faith-Full Wednesday nights, 7:00

to 8:30 pm on April 11, 18, and 25; no rehearsal on April 4.

We’ll continue to rehearse in May—same time, same place—

on May 2, 9, and 16. The choir leads us in worship on

Sunday mornings at the 8:30 am service through May 20. If

you are interested in participating in the choir, contact

Michael Miller at [email protected].

Oberammergau Passion Play September 7-18, 2020

Since 1634 a small Bavarian village has been performing the

Passion of Christ to fulfill a vow they made to God for

sparing them from the ravages of the plague. Every ten years,

from May 15 to October 3, the people of this village put on a

world-class production that draws 500,000 guests from all

over the world. The performance is five hours long (dinner

break in between) and features over 700 performers—all from

the village.

Pastor Al Cassel is offering to lead a group to view the

Passion Play, as well as visits to Prague, Budapest, Vienna,

and Salzburg. The cost, subject to adjustment based upon the

number of participants, is $3,995 with airfare being in

addition. If you are interested in this trip please speak with

Pastor Al or pick up a brochure in the church office.

Worship Matters

We continue our journey through Scripture following the

celebration of Easter. Easter will continue for seven weeks as

we hear how the resurrection changed the disciples and gave

birth to the church. How does the news of the resurrection of

Jesus change our world view?

The Gift of Music

Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a gift we have been

given by the musicians of this church. Thank you to Michael

Miller, Karen Miller, Dwight Brewer, and all who made the

cantata special. Thank you to everyone for the music of Holy

Week and Easter.

Piano in the Sanctuary

Dwight Brewer has graciously loaned us his piano, after he

had to relocate. It is an instrument that will fill up the room

and we appreciate the offer. Our piano has been moved to

save storage on campus.

100-150 quilts are produced from donated fabrics and scraps.

nursery, flood/earthquake victims, Ronald McDonald house,

Family Promise participants, and many others. No great

sewing skills are required, just a desire to help tie, pin, cut,

etc. Join us for a lot of fun while participating in this

rewarding ministry. Feel free to contact Arlene Buechler, 623

-566-7254, if you have any questions.

In addition to helping hands, we are always in need of 100%

cotton fabric, full to king size sheets, and monetary donations

to purchase batting.

Spring Is Here!

It’s happening again! Everything is blooming and beautifully

green, baseball fans from all over the country are visiting, and

this year, Easter has come and gone—spring is here! Before

we know it, our winter friends will be leaving for cooler

summer climates.

The show must go on though and you are invited to join the

team at the Lutheran Thrift Shop! Since we have only one

paid staff person, we always need volunteers. Volunteers in

all departments: accepting donations, clothing, children’s,

holiday house, books, housewares, hardware, linens, cashiers,

customer service, and truckers—yes, we always need

truckers!

Our “benefits package” includes flexible hours; most

volunteers work a 4-hour shift, but some work several shifts

per week; fellowship; that ‘great feeling you get when you do

a good thing’; a 20% discount on your Thrift Shop purchases;

and yummy baked goods at break time!

Thanks to all who made special gifts in support of our latest FaithChest

Build. Over $700 was raised in remembrance of our baptism. Thank you

to Dave Schlief and all the volunteers who gave a Sunday afternoon to put

together 24 chests! Thank you for the opportunity to make this lasting

gift to our baptismal candidates.

(The following is from The Reverend Dr. Scott Stoner, creator of The Living Compass

Wellness Initiative.)

At the risk of offering just one more piece of advice

about keeping life simple, I share the straightforward

wisdom contained in the quote box at the right of this

column. I invite you to try a simple exercise. Read

the eight questions through slowly and as you do, see

if there is one question that really speaks to you

today. See if there is one that, “has your name on it.”

If there is one that speaks to you, perhaps you could

resolve to do the simple action that is connected with

the question. With this all on my mind, I did this little

exercise myself, and found that the last question was

the one that spoke to me. Today I intentionally

expressed my love to someone to whom I had not

done so for a while, and it was a simple, beautiful

experience for both of us.

So what question speaks to you?

And how might you respond to that question in the

days ahead?
