Community Outreach News - MarchLatest Community Outreach news and events

The PMI Chicagoland Academic Outreach program is in the process of planning a new awareness and education program to increase participation and involvement

from the local Chicagoland academic community. The goal of the program is to build strong relationships with local project management students and educational

professionals. The program will encourage and provide support needed for school administrators, leaders and students from various schools to come together and network with

project management professionals, while providing them with PMI Chicagoland Chapter resources and services. Building on the success of last year’s achievements, the Professional Association Outreach group is planning

its 2nd Annual Association Fair. It will take place at an upcoming Chapter Dinner Meeting in the late spring or early summer. This will be a great opportunity for attendees to meet representatives in a trade show environment, and learn what local Professional Associations have to offer to help advance careers and expand areas of expertise in today’s competitive markets.

If your association would like to reserve a booth at the upcoming Professional Association’s 2nd annual event, or if you would like to volunteer for this event please contact [email protected]. For more information, contact Maria Astudillo at [email protected].

MARCH 2015PMI Insights

Volunteering is the backbone of the PMI organization. The PMI Chicagoland Chapter values and appreciates each volunteer for their time, efforts and expertise. The Chapter Volunteer team will be running a series of Volunteer Spotlights to acknowledge and share individual’s perspective on volunteering with the Chapter and giving back to the profession. This month’s Spotlight is on Greg Jones, former President, PMI Chicagoland Chapter. Greg has served ten (10) years in different volunteer leadership roles in the Chicago Chapter including, but not limited to, the Director of Accounting, Vice President of Finance, Vice President of Operations and Vice President of Education. He currently serves in the role of PMI-Chicagoland past President.

The Volunteer team had the opportunity to interview Greg on his many years of volunteer service, and here are the highlights of the conversation…

Volunteer Team: Why do you choose to volunteer?Greg: After attending several meetings, I liked what the local chapter and the global organization was doing to promote project management. I volunteer to give back to our profession, and to also develop my own leadership and interpersonal skills.

Volunteer Team: Why is it so important to you to be a volunteer leader? Greg: There is an old saying “The harvest is plenty but the workers are few!” It is important to volunteer so that we can provide a forum to learn project management techniques, to discuss processes and procedures, and to develop our skills and help others to develop theirs also.

Volunteer Team: What is your most rewarding volunteer experience?Greg: It is hard to select just one! I find when individuals use their skills and talents in any volunteer role there’s a tremendous amount of reward to be gained. For me, in my role leading the best chapter I know, and in other roles such as operations and finance, I’ve had a chance to meet project managers all around the world…all of my experiences have been very rewarding. I’m also reminded of some of our Outreach programs such as “Ladies of Virtue” and Black Diamond Charities. These programs have allowed us to use our project management skills to help other non-traditional organizations.

Volunteer Team: What suggestions would you offer volunteers new to the Chapter?Greg: Get involved and encourage others to join our team of volunteers. This will help us grow our chapter and raise awareness of the chapter activities throughout Chicagoland.

Volunteer Team: If you had one volunteer wish; what would it be?Greg: That we would get more people to become volunteers!

Chapter LeadershipThe Leadership Team consists of two groups. There is an elected Executive Board made up of the President, Past President and Vice Presidents. The primary function of this board is to set the strategic plan for the chapter and to oversee the execution of that plan by the Directors and their volunteers. The Directors are appointed by the Executive Board and are responsible for the execution of the strategic plan through the tactical day to day operation of the chapter. The Directors coordinate the efforts of chapter member volunteers to accomplish the activities of the chapter.
