This is a Job for SuperFood!

The old saying ‘An apple a day…’ has some truth to it.If someone were to ask for a list of the top most nutritious foods, no list would be complete without mentioning the following:1. Apples– Loaded with Vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants, these crunchy snacks might actually help keep the doctor away, by reducing cholesterol and your risk for cancer and heart disease. But remember to eat the skin!2. Avocados– Did someone say guacamole? Also high in antioxidants, they help to reduce cholesterol and your risk for cancer and diabetes.3. Blueberries– A low-calorie fiber and antioxidant source, blueberries may help improve short-term memory and slow down the effects of aging on the brain (i.e., Alzheimer’s).4. Broccoli– This highly nutritious vegetable, a relative of spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale and collard greens, contains vitamin C and beta-carotene. Broccoli may help prevent diabetes, certain cancers and heart disease.5. Flaxseeds– Reduce the risk for heart disease by providing plenty of omega-3 fats.6. Pomegranates– These are receiving a lot of press lately, and little wonder! They contain three times the amount of antioxidants as those found in red wine and green tea. Long-term use of this juice helps to prevent heart disease and reduces the risk of certain cancers and some of the not-so-nice effects of aging (i.e., Alzheimer’s).7. Salmon– A major source of omega-3 fats, decreases your risk for developing heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, stroke, diabetes and arthritis and may help with depression. Choose wild salmon over farm raised.8. Sweet Potatoes– They’re loaded with beta-carotene and are great metabolism boosters! They are also a good fiber source, fat-free and low in calories – so they’re ideal for dieters!9. Walnuts/Almonds– These nuts are good for you! Loaded with nutrients, antioxidants and omega-3 fats, they help reduce cholesterol and keep you heart-healthy. The protein, fiber and healthy fats they contain may make you feel full, so you might not be as prone to over-indulge in foods that are not so good for you!Proper nutrition, exercise, getting enough rest – all of these are part of a healthy lifestyle that we encourage when you come in for your regular chiropractic care. All work together to make the healthiest you that you can be!

Brea Chapter

Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal?I grew up in Whittier and I’ve lived in So Cal all of my life.

How long have you been a member of A Snail’s Pace Running Club?Which chapter(s)?I have been a member of the Brea chapter since 2009. I also ran with the Pasadena chapter (pre-Monrovia) in 2010. In 2015, I joinedthe ASP Running Academy RA 301, where I trained with Coach Mike C. andCoach Bill R. for my first few marathons.

How did you get into running?Growing up, I was never involved in any sport. In the summer of 2004, I signed up for a running class at Rio Hondo College. After the classstarted, I learned it was the pre-season class for the school’s crosscountry team. At the end of the class, the coach asked me to jointhe team. I was 23 years old then and I’ve been running ever since.

What has been your favorite race and why?My favorite race is the San Francisco Marathon. Last year, I PR’d at the SFM by 38 minutes after only two months in RA 301.The race course is challenging and hilly and the SF weather is typically cool and cloudy.

What are you training for now?I am recovering from the Rock n Roll San Diego Marathon and will begin training for some summer and fall 5Ks in the upcoming weeks.

What are your current running goals? My goal is to focus on 5K training and compete in the USATF cross country series.

What is your best running tip?Run hard, but always take time to rest and recover.

Why do you run?I run because it is something I never thought I could do.

Any other hobbies or interests?I enjoy reading, travel, and Crossfit.

What do you like most about being a member of A Snail’s Pace Running Club? Most definitely the support and camaraderie – shouting “GO SNAILS!” at fellow runners at various races around So Cal.

When I arrived for my first marathon group run with A Snails Pace Running Academy, the coach handedme a pen and a form to fill out. Most of the questions on the form were pretty typical: Name, address, date of birth, emergency contact, etc. At the bottom of the form there were two peculiar questions. The first one was, “What do you like about running?” In answering it, the ink flowed freely from my pen.I like the bling, the t-shirts, the glory from the (sometimes vain) attempt to cover the race distance fasterthan the last time I toed the line. I like the calorie burn and the exclusivity or the level or awe andrespect the general public gives a person who willingly runs 26 miles and 385 yards.

Born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., Muhammad Ali died this month at the age of 74. Ali was the greatest. He wasn’t the greatest boxer, the greatest Olympian, war protester, Sunni Muslim, student, husband, orfather. He simply was the greatest. Out of an abundance of self-assuredness, “The Greatest” was amoniker he gave himself. “I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.” After seeing theintensity upon which he lived his life, the world agreed. “I know where I'm going and I know the truth, and I don't have to be what you want me to be. I'm free to be what I want.”

As a boxer, Ali was a force to be reckoned with. Demurely, Ali said, “It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up.” The world knew differently. Ali trained like a man trying tolive up to his talk. He predicted the round in which he would knock his opponent out. He intimidatedhis opponents so that sometimes they would refuse to step in the ring with him. As a pacifist, he tookhis fight against the Vietnam War and the draft to the highest court in the land. Upon his refusal to beinducted into the army, Ali was stripped of his championship and boxing license, and was jailed for draftdodging. In Clay v. United States, 403 U.S. 698 (1971) the US Supreme Court reversed Ali’s criminalconviction because his draft board never explained why they denied his application for conscientiousobjector status. Ali’s persistence made him a great man.

The second question on the Academy’s form was, “What do you not like about running?” I wrote asingle word answer: running. Training to run a marathon isn’t fun. If there were an easier way to attainglory than repeating footfall after footfall for thirty to sixty miles a week for eighteen weeks, restassured, I’d be doing it. Ali trained with the intensity of a man that gave himself the title of “TheGreatest”. In boxing, running is called roadwork. Ali said, “I learned to run until I was tired, then runeven more than that.” Ali was very familiar with the pain and suffering of training. “I hated everyminute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.”

Only through the combination of self-assuredness and lots of hard work does the impossible becomethe greatest. “Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in theworld they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It'san opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.Impossible is nothing.”

This morning, June 11, was the 17th running of the Northgate Downtown Anaheim 5k. TheSnail’s Pace canopy was in a prime location to support the many ASP runners in attendance. In

fact, 2016 is the all time record for ASP participation thanks to the combined strength of ourracing team, club team and academy. This year was unusual because it was drizzling on us, butthat didn’t stop anybody from having a fun time. The race went off without a hitch and there

were many happy snails at the end.

The Downtown Anaheim 5k has been a club race for many years and with good reason. The

organizers always give the Snail’s Pace a great discount and plenty of room to put up our canopy.Although there is an opportunity to pick up numbers and T-shirts in advance; race day pickup isalso available. The parking structure is easy to find with plenty of room and no charge. The

course itself is not spectacular (running around a city block), but it is well marked and flat enoughto run very fast. The finish area is festive, with live music. Lastly, the vendors on hand areextremely generous with their samples and giveaways. This year the goodies up for grabs (not

the correct word since the vendors were cheerfully handing the stuff over with a smile) includedreusable shopping bags, sport water bottles in 16 and 20 oz sizes, full boxes of feminine hygieneproducts, bottles of water and electrolyte drinks, several brands of bars, artisanal bread,

crackers, bagels with cream cheese, oranges, dark cherries and 7-up. Runners and spectatorsalike were departing with giant bags, crammed full of good stuff.

If you haven’t tried doing the Downtown Anaheim 5k, make some space on your race schedule tosqueeze it in. And don’t forget to proudly wear the Snail’s Pace uniform.

Growing up, running comes naturally everything you do as a kid seemed to involve running. Kidsrun everywhere. Nothing hurts and you never got tired. Years later, after some sort of revelation

or a friend’s prodding, we decide to get back into running, but this time we find it’s not so easy.We thought going into the closet and grabbing a pair of old tennis shoes and a pair of shorts wereall we needed to run. After some time you start to develop aches and pains in the feet, ankles,

shins, hips, back, and chaffing (oh the chaffing!). We’ve all had them and we all know it’s not fun.No problem, right, a little ice and back at it.

But the pain keeps coming back. Then it hits, whether it takes a visit to the doctor or a casualconversation with a friend. Our equipment might be the problem or maybe we aren’t taking careof ourselves. That’s where our friends and the club come in. No matter what you are trying to do,

someone in this group has done it. We are very lucky to have such a large support system at ourdisposal. All we have to do is ask the questions.

It started for me the day I went into A Snails Pace Running Store. I had problems and thoughtthey would have the knowledge and expertise to get me the right pair of shoes. Of course theydid, and the more questions I had, the more answers they had. It was at that point that a whole

new world opened up to me. Finding out that there were people that get together and ran forfun. The folks in the shop told me about the group and times that everyone gets together for funruns.

I’ve been with the group less than a year and have met so many people that are more thanwilling to share their knowledge and I’ve learned so much. Every time I have an issue, I ask the

questions. It could be nutrition, stretching, training, how to’s, what not to do’s, where to look upthings, new races, best prices. I can literally ask anything running related at the meeting and getmy answer, as well as being introduced to information or products that will help me be a better

runner or stay healthy.

I am thankful for the club and for the many people I have met that give of themselves and their

knowledge to help me, I look forward to being someone that can do that for others.

SPECIALTY DISTRIBUTION TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES

A Snail’s Pace Running Shop has been locally owned and operated since 1979. The retail landscape has since evolved with the integration of digital technology at our fingertips, yet ASP continues to be one of the premier run specialty shops in th e country. There’s something to be said about providing and receiving customer service in person, versus online or over the phone. Having products to support this method is ideal for the run specialty retailers around the world. The New Balance 860 and 880 series are those products. These go-to stability and neutral options are only offered at exclusive specialty retailers, and the only website allowed to sell the current styles is newbalance.com. So the next time you shop at A Snail’s Pace, consider trying on a pair of shoes that promote the run specialty industry, which then trickles down to supporting your local community.

The 860v6 has a sleeker fit than its predecessor that’s more secure on your foot and more stylish when you wear it post -run. Responsive, supportive, comfortable…it sets a new standard in running shoes for overpronation. Exclusively available at newbalance.com and select stores.

Two cushioning foams work together to soften each step while intelligent geometries in the midsole and outsole deliver inherent stability that helps you keep going. If you’re putting in the miles, this neutral cushioning women’s running shoe isready to perform from mile 1 until you’re ready to stop.
