Fountain Valley MemberJohn Cerecedes
Where are you from originally and when did you move to So Cal? I was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and transplanted all the way to Huntington Beach in 1995.
What got you started on running, when, where, etc.?I was a late bloomer to the running world. I did not start running until I was 23 years old. In High School, I went the marching band route and really was not all that physically active. This lack of activity really started to pay its toll during my early career days. I knew that if I did not change something in my life, I was really going to be in some serious trouble. I was working in Long Beach at the time, so I moved to Seal Beach and bought myself a pair of running shoes.
What has been your favorite race and why? I have only run a handful of organized races, but I will say that the Surf City Marathon is my favorite for now. I probably need to get out more.
What is the coolest place you have gone for a run? You cannot beat running out in nature. I have trained in the lower Kern during the winter. There is nothing like a light dusting of snow on the long runs to keep you cool.
What are you training for now and how is it going? Right now I have the 3/1 race to look forward to.
Do you have any races that interest you? At this time, I have not pursued any big races. I have not ruled anything out for the future.
What are your current running goals? My biggest goal is to always stay in shape and remain interested in running. Thanks to the group, I feel that I have the incentive to meet my goals.
What is your best running tip? My biggest tip is to listen to your body, stay healthy and be happy.
Why do you run? I run because I have to. I have to spend way too much time in an office. Running does several important things for me, first of course is the physical activity. Between the time spent in front of a computer and the appreciation of a good meal from time to time, my body goes to mush very quickly. Second, it wakes my mind. I have found that there is a balance between the time that I have to concentrate at work and time required in my physical activity. I have from, time to time, brought my work on a run with me. This may sound unhealthy, but I have solved a few difficult “Design problems” from work while on the trail. And finally, it makes me happy. Running is my number one go-to in fighting depression and a bad day.
Any other hobbies or interests? One hobby I actually combine with running. I am a Ham Radio operator and I volunteer with the City of Huntington Beach as an Emergency communicator. The group that I volunteer with supports all the city major events. In events like the Surf City Marathon and the Fourth of July 5K Run/Parade, I am out there volunteering and sometimes also running at the same time.
What do you like most about being a member of A Snail’s Pace Running Club? I like many things about the club. What I like the most, are the friendships.
