The Trane Company is a worldwidemanufacturer of heating, ventilating,air conditioning and buildingmanagement equipment and systems.Trane is a division of AmericanStandard Inc.

The co-founder of the company wasJames Trane, a Norwegian immigrant,who opened a plumbing shop in 1885in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Besides being a steamfitter and aplumber, James Trane was also aninventor. He designed a new type oflow-pressure steam heating system,Trane vapor heating.

In 1913, James and his son Reubenincorporated The Trane Company.The product line expanded further in1925 with the development of theconvector radiator.

In 1931, The Trane Company developedits first air conditioning unit, the Trane unit cooler, and in 1938 its firstcentrifugal refrigeration machine, theTurbovac.

One of the key products developedduring World War II was the aircraftintercooler, a more efficient and lighterweight heat exchanger that enabledallied war planes to fly higher and

faster than ever before. This basic heatexchanger design was used on theLunar Rover of the Apollo 15 mission.

In 1982, The Trane Company broadenedits residential and light commercialproduct lines by acquiring the centralair conditioning department of GeneralElectric.

The company advanced compressortechnology in 1987 with the introduc-tion of the Trane 3-D® scroll compressorand the Series R® water chiller thatfeatured a helical-rotor compressordesign.

Although much has changed since1885, one thing that hasn’t changedis The Trane Company’s commitment toexcellence and serving its customers.
