A Warm Welcome To All!
A welcome to all pupils and families, both new and old at the start of a new year at Victoria Junior School. We
have been painting, decorating and made a few changes ready for the start of the Autumn term. We have two
new members of staff to welcome to the team, Miss Stephenson joins us in Year 4 and Mr Khabass joins the Year
3 team. I am sure that the whole school community will make them feel welcome.
We have moved the library to the classroom in the playground to give us even more room for one of our favourite
activities—reading! Our EAL team are now based in the main school building.
Year 6 Secondary Transfer
I know that we have only just begun a new school year
but the parents of pupils in Year 6 need to begin to
think about choosing a secondary school for Septem-
ber 2019.
I have contacted the Headteacher at Reach Academy
and can confirm that few, if any, places will be available
to Year 7 pupils in September 2019. The key dates are:
1st September—Online applications open
10th September— 7.00pm meeting for parents/carers
at the Civic Centre, Hounslow.
3rd—31st October Drop in sessions for help with online
applications at the Civic Centre.
31st October—Online applications closes
If you need any advice or help with the online applica-
tion process, please call into the school office to book a
meeting with a member of staff. You will have received
a leaflet explaining the process but a copy is attached
to this newsletter. Parent Governor
The Governing Body are looking to recruit a Parent Gov-
ernor to join our very supportive governing body team.
The application form is attached to this newsletter and
should be returned to the Headteacher or office. If you
would like a hard copy of the form please contact the
office and we will happily print one for you.

Home Contacts
Do we have two or more emergency home contacts?
Following on from recent deeply sad cases where chil-
dren have been left at home with ill parents it is consid-
ered good practice for schools to have at least two
emergency contact numbers for pupils. The extra num-
ber will be called if the primary contact fails to answer
attempts to contact them. New guidance from the DfE
states:
Where reasonably possible, schools and colleges
should hold more than one emergency contact number
for each pupil or student. This goes beyond the legal
minimum and is good practice to give the school or col-
lege additional options to make contact with a responsi-
ble adult when a child missing education is also identi-
fied as a welfare and/or safeguarding concern.
We will be sending out new data forms next week for
years 4, 5 and 6, please ensure that you complete the
form with new details and return to the school.

Dear Parent/Carer,
Parent Governor Vacancy
There is a vacancy for a Parent Governor at Victoria Junior School. A governing body is a group made up of parents, school staff (including the Headteacher), and people from the local community who together oversee the development of the school. Governors do not manage the school, that is the responsibility of the Headteacher and Leadership Team, but they do help determine the aims and values of the school, the priorities for development and help to monitor that the decisions they are making are having the desired effect.
Governors aren’t expected to be experts but need to be willing to work as part of a team, read papers, at-tend meetings and ask constructive questions. There is free training available and plenty of advice and support from the school and Hounslow Council. Parents have invaluable experience to contribute and are the largest group on many governing bodies. Although they will reflect their own and their children’s expe-rience, as a governor they need to be willing to consider the interests of all children and families in the school.
Parents, step-parents and guardians are able to stand for election, nominate other parents and vote in an election for parent governors. If for any reason you are not sure if you are eligible then ask the Headteacher.
If you would like to be considered for the position of Parent Governor then please complete the nomination form and disqualification declaration and return it to the school by Monday 1st October. If you wish to nominate another parent, you must get them to sign the form to confirm they are willing to be put forward. If the number of nominations received is the same or fewer than the number of vacancies then those par-ents will be declared parent governors.
If more nominations are received than there are vacancies, then an election will be held by secret ballot. All nominated candidates will be asked to prepare a short statement saying why they would like to be a governor. The statements will then be circulated with the ballot papers.
I hope you will consider standing. If you would like to find out more or perhaps talk to one of the serving governors please phone or ask at the school office. All parents will be advised of the outcome shortly af-ter the closing date.
Yours sincerely
Mr G Winters
