Köztudomású dolog, hogy az embert a jelleme határozza meg. Azt is tudjuk, hogy a
jellemünket az életünk nagy része alatt magunk is tudjuk alakítani, tudatosan formálni, sőt,
mások jellemére is meghatározóan tudunk hatni.
A cserkészetben a csoport szeretettel csiszolja egymás jellemét a közös foglalkozásokon.
A legtöbb családnak és kisközösségnek is megvannak a maga szokásai és bizony mostanra
a seattle-i 45-ösöknek is lassacskán forr, alakul, véglegesedik a “személyisége”. Az a hír járja
rólunk, hogy példamutatók, vendégszeretők, befogadók, türelmesek, hazafiasok, szervezettek,
vidámak, toleránsok vagyunk.
Ezen kívül megvannak a szokásaink, amiket legtöbbször könnyebb megtapasztalni, mint
elmondani, de dióhéjban annyit, hogy vannak az évközi rendes, évközi vakációs és az évközi
különleges foglalkozásaink.
A rendes foglalkozások keretén belül zajlanak a csapat és örsi tevékenységek, ilyenkor kézműveskedünk,
sportolunk, mesélünk, táncolunk, mókázunk és éneklünk.
A vakációs programjaink között a kirándulás, portyázás, táborozás foglal el prominens szerepet.
A különleges foglalkozásaink között szerepel a kiscserkész ígérettétel, a cserkészavatás, a cserkészvacsora és az
ünnepeink.
Legutóbb Oregonban táboroztunk az Elnökök napján, ahol az István, a király volt a kerettörténet. A
kerettörténet egy cserkésztáborban azt jelenti, hogy a foglalkozások témája egy központi esemény körül forog.
Ebben az esetben több kis jelmezes színdarab is bemutatta az István, a király kulcsfontosságú történeteit. Ezen
kívül például mozaikot, domborművet és koronázó eszközöket is készítettünk Szent István udvarának. Volt íjászat,
fáklyakészítés és célbadobás baltával. A gyerekek maguk találták ki a saját színdarabjaikat a lovagiasságról az esti
tábortűzhöz. A meseerdő is a résztvevők tudásalapját gyarapította. Még meg sem említettem, hogy egy
cserkésztábor mindig strukturáltan folyik le. A cserkészek mindig tudják, hogy mit és mikor teszünk. A
cserkésztáborban a telefon szerepét átveszi a személyes beszélgetés, ennek a „hangosra” állított változata a
kurjongatás. A videójátékok helyét átveszi a fogócska, zászlószerzés, elnök-titkár, fűtő és megannyi változatai a
valós világ játékainak….
Most éppen az év nagy eseményére készülünk, a seattle-i cserkészvacsorára, ami a harmadik lesz már a sorban.

Ilyenkor mindig nagy az izgalom. Szívvel-lélekkel készül a csapat és közben azon töri a fejét, hogy bárcsak minél
több vendégünk lenne az idén. Nem csak azért fontos a részvételed, mert három a magyar igazság és ez most éppen
a harmadik cserkészvacsora, vagy mert biztosítunk, hogy színvonalas szórakoztatásban lesz részed, kellemes
társaságban, a Puget Soundz zenekar jó zenéjével, hanem azért is kérünk, hogy legyél ott, mert ezzel visszajelzel a
fiataloknak, hogy amit csinálnak, az jó fogadtatást kap a közösségben! Kérlek, továbbítsd ezt az üzenetet
ismerőseidnek, barátaidnak és támogatásod jeleként vedd meg a részvételi jegyedet a WMASz weboldalán.

It is common knowledge that we are determined by our character. We also know that we can consciously shape
our character for the greater part of our lives, and we can even influence the character of others. In scouting, the
group polishes each other's character with affection during activities and meetings.
Most families and small communities have their own habit. By now, the #45s in Seattle are slowly developing
and finally having their own “personality.” We are rumored to be exemplary, hospitable, inclusive, patient, patriotic,
organized, cheerful, tolerant, and so on. In addition, we have habits that are often easier to experience than to ex-
plain. In a nutshell, we have regular, vacation-time and specialty activities.
In regular meetings we divide our time between the troop meeting and platoon time. At regular meetings it is not
unusual to have arts and craft activities, sports, story time, dance, fun, and singing. In our vacation programs, the
games, hiking and camping take on a prominent role. Our specialty activities include the Scout Promise, the Scout
Initiation, the Scout Dinner, and our National Holidays.

Most recently, we camped in Oregon on President's Day, where St. Stephen of Hungary was the frame tale. A
“frame tale” at a Hungarian scout camp means the theme of the sessions, and it is a central event. In this case, sev-
eral small plays presented in costumes told stories of St. Stephen. In addition, we made mosaics, reliefs and crown-
ing tools for St. Stephen's court. There was archery, torch making, and throwing with an ax. In the evening, for the
campfire, the children wrote and performed their own plays about knight games. The fairy tale forest also expanded
the children's fantasy and knowledge base.
I did not even mention that a scout camp is always structured. Scouts always know what is happening in the
camp – and there is always a lot happening. In the Camp, the role of the phone is taken over by personal talk (if we
put it on 'speaker phone' then it becomes yelling), and video games are taken over by “Capture the Flag,” “The Sec-
retary, the President and the Heater,” and hundreds more real-world games.
We are now preparing for the big event of the year, the # 3 Seattle Scout Dinner. The Scout Dinner Invitation can
be viewed in more detail in HÍREK, or if you have any further questions, please write to Seat-
[email protected]. While organizing the dinner, there is always a lot of excitement.
The troop is working diligently, and we wish to know how many guests are coming this year. It is not only im-
portant for us to know that you like our providing high-quality entertainment, fine dining, nice company, and good
music provided by the LIVE band Puget Soundz, but with your presence you are giving your approval to young peo-
ple, telling them that what they are doing is accepted in the community.
I invite you to pass this message on to your friends and family and buy your ticket on the HAAW website as a

Looking back to 2019
The Seattle Hungarian School closed a very
successful year in 2019. The number of students this
year has increased, and the number of programs our
school offers has also increased. From January to March,
Kristóf Tolonics, Kőrösi Csoma Sándor scholarship
holder, and his wife Eszter Kulin helped with our work.
They both taught at school and also took part in
organizing events.
Many useful and entertaining programs happened
this year. Among the useful programs I would like to
highlight the Hungarian educators’ training in San
Francisco where five teachers represented Seattle. This
event was not only about teacher training, but also
about exchanging experiences with other Hungarian
schools on the West Coast.
We also had plenty of entertainment programs.
During the summer, there was a puppet show organized
by the Hungarian American Association in Washington.
At the event, the little teddy bear Vackor entertained
the audience, courtesy of the Pilvax Theater. Autumn
did not pass without an event. Actress Györgyi Tarján
from Los Angeles, who is best known from the movie
"Kangaroo", visited our school. Györgyi has included all
ages in her interactive program telling us about acting
and about Hungarian and Hollywood film production.
We had several celebrations this year. We attended
the events organized by the Hungarian American
Association in Washington and the regular school
events. On Mother's Day, Tamás Széles, Hungarian
Consul General in Los Angeles, visited us, and Santa
Claus himself visited us for our Santa Claus celebration.
Another success was the Second Seattle Hungarian
School Camp, organized by Andrea Szirbik with the help
of enthusiastic helpers and parents. The camp was in a
beautiful setting on Vashon Island with 24 children
attending. The closing of the school camp was very
memorable as the children closed the camp with a very
high-quality performance, to the delight of parents and
visitors.
This school year, a novelty in our school is the flute
education led by Ádám Török, who has also been
assisting our school since September as Kőrösi Csoma
Sándor fellow. Ádám also leads the organization of
school programs, including the Christmas program of
the Hungarian School.
We thank the teachers and scholars for their hard
work, thank the students for attending our school, and
thank the parents for their enthusiastic support.

Visszatekintés 2019-re
A Seattle-i Magyar Iskola nagyon sikeres évet zárt 2019-
ben. Az iskolások száma gyarapodott ebben az évben is, és a
programok száma, amelyeket iskolánk ajánl, ugyancsak
növekedett. Januártól márciusig Tolonics Kristóf Kőrösi Csoma
Sándor ösztöndíjas és felesége Kulin Eszter segítették a
munkánkat. Mindketten tanítottak az iskolában, és a
programok szervezéséből is kivették a részüket.
Sok hasznos és szórakoztató program jött létre ebben az
évben. A hasznos programok közül szeretném kiemelni a San
Francisco-i tanár továbbképzést, ahol a Seattle-i Magyar
Iskolát öten képviselték. Ez az alkalom nem csak a tanárok
továbbképzéséről szólt, hanem más nyugati parti magyar
iskolákkal való tapasztalatcseréről is.
Szórakoztató programokban is bővelkedtünk. A nyár
folyamán volt bábszínház a Washingtoni Magyar Amerikai
Szövetség szervezésében. A rendezvényen Vackor, a kismackó
szórakoztatta a közönséget a Pilvax Társulat jóvoltából. Az ősz
sem telt rendezvény nélkül. Iskolánkba látogatott Tarján
Györgyi színésznő Los Angeles-ből, akit leginkább a „Kenguru”
című filmből ismerhetünk. Györgyi minden korosztályt bevont
az interaktív műsorába, amelyben a színészetről, valamint a
magyar és hollywoodi filmgyártásról mesélt nekünk.
Ünnepeink nagyon jó hangulatban zajlottak. Részt vettünk
a Washingtoni Magyar Amerikai Szövetség rendezvényein, és
a szokásos iskolai műsorok is sikeresek voltak. Anyák napja
alkalmából Széles Tamás Los Angeles-i magyar főkonzul úr
látogatott meg minket, Mikulás ünnepségünkre pedig maga a
Mikulás jött el.
Ugyancsak nagy siker volt a második Seattle-i Magyar
Iskolatábor, amelynek szervezését Szirbik Andrea vezette
lelkes segítők és szülők segítségével. A tábor gyönyörű
környezetben Vashon szigeten volt, és 24 gyerek vett részt
rajta. Az iskolatábor zárása nagyon emlékezetes volt, ugyanis
a gyerekek egy rendkívül színvonalas előadással zárták a
tábort, a szülők és a látogatók örömére.
Ebben az tanévben újdonság iskolánkban a furulyaoktatás
Török Ádám vezetésével, aki ugyancsak a Kőrösi Csoma
Sándor Program keretében segít az iskolánkban szeptember
óta. Ádám az iskolai programok szervezését is vezeti, többek
között Ádám tanította be a Magyar Iskola karácsonyi műsorát.
Köszönjük tanáraink és ösztöndíjasaink áldozatos
munkáját, a diákoknak köszönjük, hogy részt vesznek iskolánk
óráin, és értékeljük a szülők lelkes támogatását!
Ezúton szeretnénk köszönetet mondani a magyar államnak
a segítségért, amit 2019-ben a DSZT-KP-1-2019/2-000079,
diaszpórában élő magyarság szervezetei és a diaszpórában
található magyar nyelvű oktatást végző szervezetek

Bemutatom a Forgatós tánccsoport vezetőit, Flórát
és Tibort
Amikor évekkel ezelőtt felkértek, hogy csatlakozzak a
Forgatóshoz, eléggé meglepődtem, mivel Carlile-Kovács
Flóra, az egyik vezető, úgy vélte, hogy elég jól táncolok
ahhoz. Először visszautasítottam az ajánlatot, de később
újra megkért, mert azt akarta, hogy én is a csoport része
legyek. Ma nemcsak, hogy örülök ennek, hanem hálás
vagyok a lehetőségért, hogy tagja lehetek ennek a
csoportnak. Három éve már, hogy a Forgatós két személy
vezetése alatt áll: Flóra (egykori tagja és tanára a buda-
pesti Kertész Táncegyüttesnek) és Horváth Tibor (egykori
tagja a Magyar Állami Népi Együttesnek). Mindketten a
legszorgalmasabb vezetők közé tartoznak. Fantasztikus
koreográfiákat állítanak össze, amelyek bár próbára teszik
a táncosokat, egyúttal nagyon élvezetesek. Észre sem
vesszük milyen bonyolultak az egyes lépések! Nem könnyű
feladat időt és energiát áldozni a család, üzlet, munka mel-
lett arra, hogy a heti próbákat vezessék szombat
reggelenként, amire még előre készülnek a hét közben,
hogy kidolgozzák a koreográfiákat, megtervezzék a gya-
korlás menetét .
A Forgatós sokat fejlődött a hagyományos magyar tánc
stílusaiban és előadókészségükben. Ez annak köszönhető,
hogy Flóra és Tibor nem csak koreográfiákat tanítanak be
a csoportnak, hanem magát az élő táncot tanítják. Csodá-
latos látni a csoportot, amint önbizalommal telve járják a
szabad magyar táncokat próbáink során. Hálás köszönet
Flórának és Tibornak, hogy fáradozásuk eredményeként
még magasabb szintre hozták a csoportot tánctudás és
előadókészség terén a 3 évvel ezelőttihez képest. Nagyon
szerencsés a Forgatós, hogy Flóra és Tibor a hosszú évek
során szerzett tapasztalatuk segítségével vezetik a csopor-
tot. Most, hogy már többet tudtok kemény munkájukról,
hogy jobb és jobb táncosokat faragjanak belőlünk, feltét-
lenül gyertek el valamelyik elkövetkező eseményünkre!

Introducing our Forgatós Dance
Group Directors: Flóra and Tibor
When I was asked to join Forgatós several years
ago, I was quite surprised that one of the directors,
Flóra Carlile-Kovács, felt I was good enough to dance
with them. In fact, when I initially declined, she
asked again me to join, that she wanted me to be in
the group. Now, I’m not only happy I joined but
grateful for the opportunity. For the last three years,
Forgatós has been directed by Flóra (a former mem-
ber and instructor of Kertész Dance Ensemble, Buda-
pest) and Tibor Horváth (a former member of the
Hungarian State Folk Ensemble), two of the hardest
working directors I’ve ever known. They’ve been put-
ting together fantastic choreographies that are chal-
lenging but so much fun to dance, you don’t even no-
tice how hard the steps can be! And it’s not easy for
them to take time out of their busy lives of family
and business responsibilities to not only run the For-
gatós rehearsal every Saturday morning but to pre-
pare exercises and choreographies during the week
for the group.
Forgatós has grown in terms of Hungarian dance
style, capability, and poise. That’s because Flóra and
Tibor have been teaching the group not only choreog-
raphies but how to do the dances themselves. To see
this group confidently doing free style Hungarian
dancing during practice is truly a wonderful sight to
see. We have Flóra and Tibor to thank for their effort
for getting us to an even higher level of dance and
confidence than where we were just three years ago!
Forgatós is very fortunate to have Flóra and Tibor,
with all their years of dance experience and back-
ground, as directors of our group. Now that you know
more about how hard they’ve worked to make us
much better dancers, be sure to come to one of our
upcoming events!

for the 2020 camp from August 2nd to August 9th.
We have been busy organizing programs for musi-
cians, dancers, singers, and children. We even have
a “happy camper” option for those who just want to
attend camp without partaking in the workshops.
There is something for everyone!
Early bird registration is open with significantly
lower fees so take advantage of that and register

We have some new teachers at camp this
year!
We are very happy to have the HAAW’s in-
tern, Ádám Dancsó Török, join us from Hun-
gary to lead our children’s program. From a
young age, he has instructed children in play-
ing instruments and competing in folk competi-
tions. During his first year as an intern in the
Korosi Csoma Sandor Program (KCSP) in 2015
-16 he spent nine months in Cleveland teach-
ing children folk songs in Hungarian School. This
past year he has filled a similar role in Seattle as
dance and recorder teacher for learners of all ages.
Sanyi “Cilika” Csányi and Adrián “Alin”
Mezei , two well-known village musicians
from Szászcsávás, will be joining the Dűvő
band as guest teachers. “Cilika” and “Alin” are
lead musicians of the Szászcsávás Band. For
many generations, this band has been instru-
mental in preserving traditional folk music of
the Szászcsávás village and the Kis-Küküllő
River valley of Transylvania.
Ti Ti Tábor hírek Ti Ti Tábor News
Remek hír: Már lehet regisztrálni a Ti Ti Tábor 2020-as
táborára, mely az idén augusztus 2-től augusztus 9-ig lesz
megtartva. Lelkesen készülünk a zenészek, táncosok, éne-
kesek és gyerekek programjainak megszervezésével. Egy
"boldog táborozó" opciót is tudunk ajánlani azok számára,
akik szeretnének eljönni a táborba, de nem kívánnak részt
venni a foglalkozásokon. Mindenki számára van valami!

Lesz néhány új tanárunk az idei táborban!
Nagyon örülünk, hogy Török Dancsó Ádám,
a WMASz idei magyarországi ösztöndíjasa is
velünk tart, ő fogja vezetni a gyerekek prog-
ramját. Fiatalkorától kezdve tanított gyereke-
ket különböző hangszerekre és arra, hogyan
versenyezzenek népi versenyeken. A Kőrösi
Csoma Program (KCSP) keretén belül első
útja során 2015-16-ban kilenc hónapig Cleve-
landben tanított gyerekeket népdalokra a Magyar Iskolában.
Az elmúlt évben hasonló szerepet töltött be Seattle-ben,
mint gyerek- és felnőtt tánc- illetve furulyaoktató.
Csányi Sanyi “Cilika”és Mezei Adrián
“Alin”, két jól ismert falusi zenész Szászcsá-
vásról. A Dűvő zenekarhoz fognak csatlakozni,
mint vendégtanárok. “Cilika” és “Alin” a
szászcsávási zenekar vezető zenészei. Sok
generáción át ez a zenekar tartotta fent Er-
délyben Szászcsávás falu és a Kis-Küküllő
folyó völgye hagyományos népi zenéjeit.

Martin “Florin” Codoba is a Hungarian village musician who was the guest
music teacher for the Ti Ti Tábor Hungarian Folk Camp held in August of 2019.
Florin was born on May 3, 1978 in the village of Magyarpalatka which is a Tran-
sylvanian village 20 miles Northeast of Cluj (known in Hungarian as Kolozsvár).
Members of his family have been village musicians since the early 1900s, so Florin
grew up surrounded by the folk music of this region. Continuing with this tradi-
tion, Florin is the 5th generation in his family to be a musician and is currently the
lead violinist for the Palatka band.
Both the music and dance students of Ti Ti Tabor learned the melodies and
steps from Magyarpalatka, one of the most popular táncház dance cycles from the
Mezőség area. Florin provided campers with the unique opportunity to not only
enjoy but also authentically learn the music of Magyarpalatka from him, a direct
village source. During an interview at camp, Florin shared his first-hand
knowledge of the music, and culture of Magyarpalatka as well as his virtuoso play-
ing. We would like to share some of the highlights from this interview.
Florin got his first start in music in 1982, when “Father Christmas” brought
him his first violin when he was just 4 years old. After a few years of schooling in
his village of Magyarpalatka, he had the choice of going to the city of Kolozsvár to
study classical music or to stay in his village to learn from his relatives the tradi-
tional village music by ear. Florin ultimately chose to stay and learn from his father and uncle. Upon the death of his
father in 2003, he took over leadership of the Palatka band and has become one of the best-known village musicians in
Hungary.
For 28 years, Florin has been a supporting member and instructor of the Kallós Zoltán Alapítvány, teaching its folk
music camps. Since fall of 2015, he has had a permanent position at the Kallós Zoltán Alapítvány’s school of instrumen-
tal music as an expert and principal instructor. During the interview, Florin told the audience: “My sons are the 6th gen-
eration” and they have been accompanying him over the past three years to music camps. In fact, the week that Florin
was at Ti Ti Tabor, he said his 12-year-old son “is taking my place” by playing at a camp in Mezőkeszü for him.
Florin also talked about the changes in village life from the 1980s through the 1990s. For example, it wasn’t until
the 90s that the musicians of Magyarpalatka – and other villages – were allowed to leave Romania and travel to other
countries like Hungary. The traditional farming life was also changing, with young people often looking for work out-
side of their village. Many villages lost their musicians and their music traditions. Fewer people knew the dances and
the younger generation listened to newer, popular music. Florin’s band plays the very old Mezőség tunes, but also plays
“commercial” or newer ones if requested. At a time when other villages now have few musicians, Florin’s family man-
aged to keep the music traditions alive and to this day, people still go to this village to learn music from Magyarpalatka.
The Palatka band plays for many traditional Hungarian events such as weddings, christenings, Farsang or carnival,
harvest ball, sheep shearing, etc. All Saints Day on November 1st was specifically mentioned by Florin in more detail.
The custom is to visit grave sites of family and share palinka. The Palatka band shows respect by playing a favorite folk
melody of the deceased. Florin played a haunting tune that is often used for Hungarian and Roma burials to “escort the
body to the grave”.
At the end of the interview, Florin shared his favorite Palatka melody with campers. One could see that it was a very
meaningful moment for him as he played the beautiful song that his father and uncle had serenaded him with when he
left for the army.
We can’t thank Florin enough for sharing his talent and the passion he has for preserving and playing Magyarpalat-
ka music. This is the first time that Ti Ti Tábor Hungarian Folk Camp has had such a traditional village musician (5th
generation) to be part of camp. It was an unforgettable experience for all the campers to dance to his music and to learn
from him.
In 2020, we are very excited to bring two more village musicians for the 2020 Ti Ti Tábor camp! We are happy to
have Roma musicians from Szászcsávás, Csany Sanyi, and Mezei Adrian, “Alin”, join this year in August. For more in-
