Topics for this event could include the production and disposal of water, mitigation of surface methane leakage, potential for LNG development

Meetings Will convene a meeting of Committee members and other interested persons at the AAPG ACE and other meetings as appropriate.
Hold oral and poster sessions on Exploration for Gas Hydrate Resources at upcoming ACE and/or ICE meetings, and support the
inclusion of a gas hydrate short course at least once every two years.
Contact students that express an interest in gas hydrates at the AAPG Student Hub and provide them with information about geoscience

Large Methane Releases From Gas Hydrate On Global Climate, both through geologic time and as a result of future human activities.

Continue gas hydrate presentations on college campuses as part of the Visiting Geoscientist Program. Organize a gas hydrate short course at

Publications Promote the dissemination of information regarding recent and proposed gas hydrate exploration activities, including notification of the release
of Memoir 89: Natural Gas Hydrate – Energy Resource Potential and Associated Geologic Hazards. An article on gas hydrate will be
submitted to the AAPG Explorer at least once every two years.

Share information on significant gas hydrate papers and presentations with organizers of the GCAGS and PSAAPG conventions, and with all

Use the gas hydrate webpage to inform interested AAPG members of gas hydrate sessions at other conferences including OTC, AGU, GSA, and
SGE. Share AAPG ACE and ICE “call for abstracts” with authors of significant papers presented at those conferences.
TIGs
Initiate plans to establish and moderate a web-based Technical Interest Group that will serve as an online forum for the discussion of technical
issues related to gas hydrate exploration and development.
Webpages Updates will be made to the Gas Hydrates section of the EMD website at least once every six months. Subjects include results from IODP and
other offshore hydrate drilling programs, plans and results of Arctic production testing, and upcoming meetings (AAPG and sister societies) that
include gas hydrate sessions.
EMD Shale Gas Committee Functions CHAIR: Neil Fishman Annual
Meetings Chaired technical sessions at the 2010 AAPG-ACE on “Exploration And Production Of Shale Gas Resources‖ and “Genesis Of Shale
Gas—Physicochemical And Geochemical Constraints Affecting Methane Adsorption And Desorption‖.
Will chair technical sessions at the 2010 AAPG-ICE on “North American Unconventional Oil—The Bakken Formation‖ and “North
American Unconventional Gas—Shale Gas”.
Will provide input into program development for the Unconventional Petroleum Meeting planned for Denver, 2011 and the 2001
Houston ACE, including sessions on both shale gas and shale oil (Eagle Ford, Bakken, and Barnett shales)
Members will continue sponsoring the Unconventional Research Session held on the Tuesday evening of the ACE

Will further establish contact and integrate shale-related topics with these societies. EMD members Fishman and Egenhoff chaired a technical
session called ―Geology of Shale—from Source Rocks to Reservoir Rocks‖ at the Rocky Mountain Section of GSA meeting held in Rapid City
South Dakota, April 2010.
TIGs
Has created an informal working group (via email communication) to establish areas of interest and concern for those involved in research,
exploration, and production of shale gas and shale oil.

Will continue updating and expanding existing features on its webpages, and expanding its technical content to include production of liquids
beyond gas (oil, NGLs, etc.).

joint EMD-SEPM Field Trip, and (3) hold a 2-Day core course dealing with the Alberta Oil Sands: Regional Geology and
Regulatory Concerns.

Solicit 4 to 6 oral presentations for the geothermal portion of the “Alternative Energy” session at the 2011 ACE. Topics will include
resources, development, and/or environmental issues in geothermal.
Contact students that express an interest in geothermal resources at the AAPG Student Hub and provide them with information about
geoscience careers in geothermal (via Email and/or the EMD student member page).

about AAPG’s geothermal focus at future GRC meetings. Many members are already familiar with the concept of geothermal from oil and
gas wells, and this can be strengthened through EMD/AAPG presence and support.

A Technical Interest Group will be considered in the future once the Geothermal Committee is fully functioning.

Engage students at the AAPG Student Hub throughout the ACE and ICE meetings for discussions on uranium exploration and
recovery, and provide them with information about geoscience careers in the field.
Demonstrate the utility of the Web Portal and how to operate within the Portal to input URLs of interest to the Committee and others
and to illustrate how the Web Portal highlights AAPG’s DataPages and Search & Discovery applications.

The EMD Coal Committee is actively expanding its involvement in key technical themes such as clean coal, coal gasification, and coal-to-
liquids technology, as well as further developing coal certification with the DPA. All of these technologies are associated with potential
environmental impacts and therefore the Coal Committee will be seeking input from DEG and DPA in planning technical sessions,
preparing material for the website, and generating future publications.

Publications Intends to develop an AAPG Special Publication (or equivalent volume) exploring the integrated themes of clean coal, coal gasification,

DPA, and the EMD CBM Committee, as well as various professional organizations concerned with mining and engineering.

Proposed themes for upcoming technical events include Future Coal Extraction Technologies: Mining Or In-Situ Gasification? and Coal:

TIGs Will establish and moderate a web-based Technical Interest Group that will serve as an online forum for the discussion of technical issues
related to coal exploration and development.
Webpages In addition to updating and expanding existing features on its webpages, the EMD Coal Committee plans to expand its technical content
along the integrated themes of clean coal, coal gasification, coal-to-liquids technology, and the role of coal characterization in coalbed
methane development. Also, the EMD Coal Committee plans to continue its cooperation with Sam Limerick in digitizing maps for the
AAPG GIS online database.
5. EMD-DEG Renewable Energy Committee Functions
EMD Co-CHAIR: Richard Bost DEG Co-CHAIR: Nancy Fix Annual Meetings Chair an oral or poster session called Renewable Energy – Where are we now? at an upcoming ACE and/or ICE meeting.
Engage students at the ACE/ICE Student Hub for discussions on renewable energy and how this complements the continued need
and role for petroleum resources, and provide them with information about geoscience careers in renewables.

Conduct a webinar focused on those economic factors controlling natural gas development
Publications Consider a publication focused on Economic Evaluations: Example Techniques and Case Studies. This would consist of a
compendium of economic analysis techniques, specifically directed at spreadsheet approaches for evaluating and comparing
prospects of various types. First priority will be U.S. gas shales.
Section and Region Mtgs

Examine issues related to specific geographic areas (for example, the effect of low natural gas prices on unconventional gas
development in the Rockies, or the future of coal production in the eastern U.S.) and propose GTW’s, webinars, etc. that
address these.
Sister Society Activities Pursue greater interaction with International/U.S. Associations for Energy Economics. These are groups with whom insights
from individuals holding cross-memberships could be particularly helpful to AAPG members, particularly by directing
members to useful materials on natural gas, oil, and environmental topics.
TIGs Establish and moderate a web-based Technical Interest Group that will serve as an online forum for the discussion of
technical issues related to energy economics and technology topics.
Webpages 1. Provide semi-annual reports for posting on the Energy Economics and Technology Committee webpages that include
information about:
Energy usage and development in the U.S. and overseas.
Political activities that impact energy development (and therefore energy prices and exploration).
Energy price forecasts and the issues that impact prices.
New developments from university, government and industry on the exploration, recovery, and associated
environmental considerations involved in energy projects, in the U.S. and overseas.
2. Provide quarterly updates of required webpage content, including a calendar of important meetings, reference lists, web
links to Search and Discovery articles, and web links to additional sources of information outside of AAPG (via the Web
Portal).
7. EMD Publications Committee Functions
CHAIR: J. Pashin Vice-Chair: D. Peters Annual Meetings
Stimulate Discussions with EMD Commodity Subcommittees and other Committees concerning possible development of new
publications. Participate in annual meeting of AAPG Publications Committee via EMD liaison to committee and other EMD
members on the committee (in order to promote EMD publications to the committee and aid that committee in tracking EMD
projects). Also promote publication of papers that may not be of interest to the AAPG Bulletin in the EMD Journal of
Natural Resources Research. Cooperate w/ DEG and DPA
Maintain Regular Communications with DEG and DPA concerning possible joint publications.

Monitor GTWs, Webinars, and Local Meeting Presentations for possible development of publications.
Publication Monitoring Primary function to monitor progress of existing publications that are in preparation or in press, to establish anticipated
release date. Coordination with AAPG Publication Committee and AAPG Publication Staff, when appropriate.

Encourage and promote all AAPG and EMD publications at Section and Regional Meetings through coordination with AAPG
Publication Committee and AAPG Publication Staff.
Sister Society Activities Encourage and promote all AAPG and EMD publications with Sister Societies at their meetings, local, regional, and national
annual meetings.
Webpages Monitor and ensure that EMD Publications webpage is current and accurate.
