WHO WE AREMantis World was established in 2000 and offers a range of designed-for-decoration garments within the babywear, adults’ and kids’ sectors. Based in London, we work closely with partner factories around the world: Tanzania, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, to ensure our garments are made in an ethical and environmentally sound manner. We believe in consistently delivering the best product whilst leading by honest example with our “Well Made” ethos underpinning all that we do.

For us it’s important to recognise that there’s a lifecycle for every garment we make and that each part of that garment’s journey – from design to manufacture to delivery and beyond – is an opportunity to benefit everyone involved, and it’s about using the processes of manufacturing cotton-based garments to have a positive impact on the communities and on the environment in which we work.

WHAT WE DOMantis World make garments with an emphasis on attention to design and detail, and all created for the garment decoration industry. Our focus is on providing contemporary clothing manufactured with care and consideration to all involved in the production process.

We don’t believe in fast fashion. We don’t want our, or indeed any, clothing to end up in landfill after a couple of wears due to it being no longer “on-trend” or it falling apart due to low quality. Our aim is to produce garments that will combine truly modern looks with quality and wearability: clothing that can be worn over and over whilst remaining credible in terms of style giving maximum benefit to the customer and minimising harm to the environment.

SUSTAINABILITYThe demand for the world’s resources is ever increasing. We know that mankind can’t continue to use up valuable land and energy resources whilst turning a blind eye to what may be happening to the environment around us – and which will in turn impact upon future generations. We are all more conscious of the working conditions in the manufacturing sectors. And we at Mantis World are moving ever forward in our sustainability journey. We promise to increase the use of sustainable fibres each year – this year nearly 45% of our new styles are made from organic cotton or the man-made but very eco-friendly Tencel® (by Lenzing). Indeed, all our organic cotton styles are GOTS® certified which audits both the environmental and social aspects of production from fibre to garment delivery.

We work with only reputable manufacturers; each with a clear ethical and social policy with relevant and recognised certifications that are in line with our own Well Made ethos and Code of Conduct.

We only work with mills who have a suitable and effective effluent treatment plant (ETP) to ensure that the water used in the wet processing/ dyeing stages of our production processes is safe to be put back into the environment.

In order to ensure that our garments are kind to skin and with no potentially harmful dyes or chemicals used during manufacture, we insist that all our fabrics are certified to Oeko-tex® Standard 100, with all babywear fabric holding class 1 certification.

We ensure we know where the cotton used in the manufacture of all Mantis World garments comes from, and, in keeping with our ethical policy regarding the use of child or forced labour, continue our pledge not to use Uzbek cotton.

WHAT DOES “SUSTAINABLE CLOTHING” MEAN TO YOU?I believe sustainable clothing is a social responsibility. To me, it means everyone in the supply chain should be treated fairly while taking due care of the environment. When it comes to sustainability, everyone has slightly different priorities. To some, the fair payment of farmers matters the most, to others it might be the use of sustainable fibres, fair working conditions, carbon emissions or water quality. We at Mantis World believe that workers have a right to earn a decent wage for fair hours in a safe workplace and are committed to increasing our use of sustainable fibres year on year. We ensure waste water is free of toxic chemicals and have transparency not to use Uzbek cotton, due to the forced labour and environmental damage involved.

DOES SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURE MEAN THAT YOU HAVE TO COMPROMISE ON STYLE OR QUALITY?Absolutely not! We have learned over the years that just making something sustainable isn’t going to make it sell. Mantis World take great care with every detail, from the fabric to cut and stitching, ensuring that our garments are desirable; that they look and feel great, they are relevant and they have longevity. Oh and by the way, they’re sustainable too. I encourage you to just touch our clothes: from our peach-finished Superstar styles, to organic cotton jersey, interlock and Tencel®. You will feel the luxurious softness that proves we are a million miles away from the old stereotype that sustainable or ethical clothing feels rough and only comes in muddy colours. The best way

to explain our philosophy is with our term “Well Made”: clothing that’s made well in terms of design, raw materials and sustainability.

WHY SHOULD BUSINESSES BE INTERESTED IN SUSTAINABLE FASHION?Every business needs to take sustainability seriously. Businesses are a huge economic force and I believe should use this power wisely. Clothing is a truly globalised industry and the world is now a very small place. Just because the clothes we wear are often produced far away, it doesn’t mean that our industry isn’t responsible if a factory building collapses or rivers have untreated dangerous chemicals dumped into them. We all need to avoid greenwash and stop thinking of sustainability as a marketing tool. At Mantis World we can demonstrate it is possible to behave both commercially and sustainably by embracing the triple bottom line – people, planet, profits. If we can do it, so can you.

WHAT ARE YOUR NEXT STEPS?On a numbers level I’m very excited to delve into Mantis World’s impact on the planet and its people and do some serious measuring to see what our true cost is. Instead of the accepted two-dimensional accounting which only measures economic impact, we want to quantify what our triple bottom line is. To do this we have to measure the invisible costs or externalities to society and the environment. We are about to embark on two initiatives to help us do this – first of all SCAP, which we recently joined, with a commitment to reduce our carbon, waste

and water footprints by 15%. We are also going to take part in the BCorp movement where our social and environmental impact is independently verified. Both programmes require us to publicly report our impact so everyone in our value chain has transparency on what we do. Additionally, our strong partnership with the Ethical Fashion Forum, that educates and informs our industry on sustainable business practices, will continue.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO COMPANIES WHO WANT TO BUY MORE SUSTAINABLE CLOTHING?Do some research and take the time to work out what sustainability means to you. Think of it as a journey. You will not find the perfect sustainable solution straight away, so decide what your priorities are. Be thoughtful in your purchases and embrace longevity – avoid cheap disposable clothing and opt for something that lasts. Not only will you be reducing demand on precious resources and waste, but clothing with your brand on it will be visible for much longer! It’s a win win.

WE HAVE ALL HEARD OF THE PROBLEMS IN THE CLOTHING INDUSTRY. WHAT WOULD THE IDEAL FUTURE FOR THAT INDUSTRY LOOK LIKE?We will see a huge improvement in gender rights. The garment industry employs millions of women and is an easy, low barrier industry for women to enter the workplace. We will see the empowerment of women as they take a greater role in economic life in fair working conditions, not simply seen as a pool of cheap labour. Business will clean up its act to behave responsibly and eventually we will have worldwide legislation to ensure it does. Our industry will be in a much better position when all clothing is made with respect to society and the environment and we have cured our addiction to cheap fast fashion.

Organic cotton is a natural, renewable and sustainable fibre grown from non-genetically modified plants ie, grown without the use of

The GOTS® (Global Organic Textile Standard) is a certification that guarantees the organic status of textiles; from the harvesting of raw

cotton to dispatch of the finished garments whilst ensuring all is done in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. www.global-standard.org

All our fabrics are tested and verified using the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 which assures that no harmful substances or dyes are

used at any stage of production or left as a residue on the fabric. Our Babywear also holds ‘Class 1’ certification verifying that it has passed the most stringent safety tests. www.oeko-tex.com

Of the common social standards, the content of the WRAP (Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production ) code of conduct is the weakest and

least strict on several issues. Although better than no code at all, Mantis World will only work with WRAP approved factories if they have a clear plan to move onto more robust standards within a year.

SA8000®, one of the world’s pre-eminent social standards, is the central document of the SAI ( Social Accountability Institution) and is an auditable certification standard that

encourages organizations to develop, maintain, and apply socially acceptable practices in the workplace. It is based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights, conventions of the ILO, UN and national law, and measures social performance with aim of protecting the workers along each stage of the supply chain. Mantis World encourages all suppliers to attain SA8000®, or equivalent, certification.

The Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) – a non-profit organisation dedicated to the

improvement of working conditions in the supply chain, with factories audited against the BSCI base code. Mantis World works with factories that are BSCI compliant or equivalent as an acceptable level of compliance.

You may find that measurements such as height are a better guide than age when it comes to choosing the right size for our Mantis Kids, Mantis Mini and Babybugz ranges.

BACK NECK LABELMost of our products now feature a tear-off back neck label featuring size and style information only and which can be easily removed to give an area free for decoration whilst allowing the opportunity for a truly blank and brand free garment. We’re currently in the process of changing all garments to this form of labelling, but in the meantime you can identify the garments that are guaranteed to have the tear-off label by looking in the accompanying text to each product.

CARE LABELThis is typically found in the side seam of all garments and details the fibre composition together with country of manufacture and the origin of the cotton used. We’d recommend that you ensure that, if you decide to relabel any garments, you retain the fibre composition information as it is a legal requirement.

Legislation also demands we comply with the requirement to put this fibre information in all languages of the E.U hence the 23 translations you will typically find on our garments.

We’re also obligated to put our name and contact address on each and every garment but have positioned it in such a way so that it’s easy to cut off or remove whilst leaving all other information intact – allowing customers the easiest opportunity for a truly brand-free garment.

For best results, we suggest you follow the care instructions as detailed on the label. Washing lightly soiled clothes at lower temperatures reduces energy consumption, reduces CO2 emissions, helps the environment and can prolong the life of your clothes.
