Willie's Wonky Chocolate Factory

Sunday, 11 January 2009 New Series

British entrepreneur Willie Harcourt-Cooze is on a mission to produce the best chocolate in the world – from bean to bar, and beyond.

This four-part series follows Willie, his wife Tania and their three young children as Willie’s dream to grow his own cocoa beans from his Venezuelan farm and then turn them into premium chocolate at his Devon factory, becomes a reality.

Willie’s Wonky Chocolate Factory also features demonstrations of mouth-watering chocolate recipes, guaranteed to get all chocoholics drooling.

The series follows Willie’s journey from harvesting his crop in Venezuela to kitting out his factory in Devon to trying to launch his product in the UK.

Willie aims to be one of the first Brits since Cadbury to grow and produce his own chocolate. His plan is to launch three 100% pure cacao bars made from chocolate liquor, each created from a different flavoured bean.

The recipes featured in this episode include chocolate spread, roasted pepper gazpacho, and a chocolate marinade for pork.

Penguins Of The Antarctic

Sunday, 11 January 2009

The penguins of the Antarctic lead extraordinary lives, their home is the coldest, windiest and driest place on the planet. These flightless birds manage to cope with such extremes, but how will they survive the even greater challenge of climate change?

Penguins are true survivors, pioneers of some of the harshest conditions on the planet. They live in their millions, thriving in Antarctica where winter temperatures are freezing and fierce winds buffet the desolate icy plains. Their ability to cope with such extremes would already appear to defy the odds. But how are they coping with the biggest environmental issue of today – global warming?

The largest and most spectacular of its kind – the emperor penguins have the regal air their name suggests and are the hardiest of all penguins. As Antarctica slips into the darkness of winter most penguins head north to warmer waters, only the emperor remains. But not even their survival skills may save them. As more ice melts, their colonies are literally disappearing into the sea.

But while one penguin loses out, another gains. King penguins actually do much better in a warmer climate. Their numbers have increased over the last 20 years and their colonies spread further south as the ice melts. It’s a similar story for the chinstrap penguins.

The frozen home of the penguins is changing beneath their feet. Scientific investigation continues daily to try and find out exactly how. It appears that while parts of the continent are warming, other parts are actually getting colder. How exactly penguins are being affected and what the future holds for them is something biologists are desperate to try and understand.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A co-production of BBC/Thirteen WNET New York. Series Editor: Tim Martin.

Lusitania: Murder On The Atlantic

Sunday, 11 January 2009

In 1915, the Lusitania was the fastest, biggest and most glamorous ocean liner on the Atlantic. It was the Cunard flagship, plying the Atlantic between New York and Liverpool.

Then without warning, on the morning of May 17th, nail bitingly close to its destination, it was holed by a single torpedo from a German U-boat, lurking in wait. Just 18 minutes later the Lusitania had sunk. 1200 of 1900 passengers and crew perished. It was the 9/11 of World War One, an unprovoked attack on innocent civilians, and it changed the rules of war forever.

Bitter controversy surrounded the sinking: was the ship as innocent as she seemed? Had the British government secretly used a passenger ship to carry explosives? Worse still, had Winston Churchill deliberately sacrificed the Lusitania to bring America into the war?

Starring John Hannah as Professor Ian Holbourn, Kenneth Cranham as Captain Turner, Florian Panzeras as Lt. Capt. Schweiger and Michael Feast as Captain Hobbs.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A Darlow Smithson Production. Producer: Johann Insanally; Director: Christopher Spencer.

The House Of Windsor: A Royal Dynasty: The First Windsors

Monday, 12 January 2009 New Series

The House Of Windsor: A Royal Dynasty is a new three-part series that follows the Royal family’s life stories. They are woven into a fascinating tapestry set against the major events of nine decades. The narrative is built on remarkable – in some cases previously unseen – archive film including rare 1930s colour footage of a Coronation, a Silver Jubilee and a Royal tour of Canada.

Witness the triumphs of the crowned heads calmly steering their country through two world wars, their moments of public splendour (the fireworks that saluted George V’s Silver Jubilee and the tide of love that swept Elizabeth II aloft on her Golden Jubilee), their days of personal joy (Prince William’s graduation day, Prince Harry’s passing-out parade) and their days of sorrow (the failed marriages and the deaths of Princess Margaret and Princess Diana).

The Windsor dynasty was born in 1917 during the darkest days of World War One. Criticised for being a blood relation of the German enemy, the reigning Monarch, George V, suddenly changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg to the resoundingly English, Windsor.

Episode 1: The First Windsors follows the reign of George V and his devoted wife Queen Mary. The couple were a dedicated but deeply conservative couple, shocked by modern fashions in dress and manners. They were suspicious of their eldest son, Edward, and his passion for everything new.

George’s first great crisis came during the Great War when he was forced to change the Royal name. His second crisis haunted the last ten years of his life. His belief that his son Edward would be a disastrous King proved right. Edward VIII would be forced to abdicate in 1936 after less than a year on the throne. But, proud to be the King of a ‘wonderful people’, George stirred loyalty and affection throughout the country.

The Somme

Monday, 12 January 2009

World War 1’s Battle of the Somme, fought from 1 July to 18 November 1916, was a turning point in history. It was a modern battle of such prehistoric brutality that its horror is hard to comprehend. Brave patriotic men eagerly volunteered to fight for what they saw as a great and honourable cause, only to find themselves used as cannon fodder by their military and political leaders. Whole villages and communities marched to their deaths.

Narrated by Tilda Swinton, The Somme is a docu-drama which follows a group of young men through the first day of battle – a day when a whistle blow sent British and French soldiers ‘over the top’ and towards an almost certain death. Through reconstruction and historical records, the fates of several genuine officers and nurses who fought or served at the Battle of the Somme are followed. This was a battle fought by civilians on unfamiliar territory.

Private Cyril Jose, at the age of only fifteen, had lied on his conscription papers to join the swelling ranks of young men sent off to fight for their country. American heiress, Mary Borden, had left Chicago at the start of the Great War to work for the Red Cross, and by 1916 she had selflessly set up her own field hospital behind the British lines on the Somme. Captain Charlie May was only too aware of the impending slaughter and wrote a letter of farewell to his wife and baby just before going over the top. The planning of the battle was left to British General Rawlinson - a plan that would send thousands of men marching straight into the German machine gun posts.

Through the friendships and the fear, this moving film is told through the diaries and letters of men in the field – many of whom would never be reunited.

The Museum: Old Pots And Puzzles

Tuesday, 13 January 2009

The backrooms of the British Museum are bristling with sleuths.

This week on The Museum, grey-bearded Irving Finkel, an expert in the world’s oldest writing, is called to Scotland Yard to help the police with their enquiries.

In the museum’s laboratory, Rebecca Stacey is hunting for a whiff of opium in a small pot three and a half thousand years old.

And Colin McEwan is trying to crack a code, the silent language of the Nasca, the ancient and mysterious South American tribe, famous for etching huge symbols in the Peruvian desert. Colin thinks the key to these symbols lies in some dusty boxes on the museum’s shelves.

The Museum: Old Pots And Puzzles will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, January 25 at 7:00pm

PRODUCTION DETAILS:Filmed, produced and directed by Chris Rushton.

Party Animals

Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Danny (Matt Smith) urges Jo (Raquel Cassidy) to seek counselling for her escalating drinking problem, but it becomes the least of her worries when her husband runs off with the nanny.

Meanwhile the by-election campaign heats up, on and off the campaign trail for Ashika (Shelley Conn) and Scott (Andrew Buchan). Ashika cheekily uses a picture of Scott’s deceased dad, a former local Labour MP to boost her Tory campaign. Scott retaliates by getting the local paper to run an interview with her Labour-voting father that makes her seem young and foolish.

The candidates attend a youth disco held at Scott’s old school. After a dance to a classic hit, Scott takes Ashika on a tour to his old classroom. Could this be love?

Ashika leaves for London the next day on James’s (Patrick Baladi) request. Having ended their affair, Ashika is surprised to receive a marriage proposal from him. Sure that James is not the man for her, she turns down his offer. When they part company their farewell hug is caught on camera. But who is looking through the lens? And what will they do with the photographs?

As Jo’s demise seems sealed, Kirsty convinces Danny to host an intimate, power dinner party. Danny is offered a new research job for a high-profile MP. He turns it down suggesting Kirsty (Andrea Riseborough) instead. Unbeknown to Kirsty, the job is not available to her, but she will do anything to climb the political ladder, even if it means sleeping her way to the top.

The award-winning London-born Iranian stand-up comic Omid Djalili has unleashed his skills in a brave series made for the BBC, this time lampooning Jane Austen with a sketch called ‘Pride and Racial Prejudice’.

The charming and challenging Djalili also features in a brilliant mimicry of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and as a wannabe actor who insists on showing his ‘star quality’ to guest talent football commentator Ray Stubbs.

Djalili sets out to prove that Middle Easterners can be funny and says if he can get the average Joe Schmo a bit more informed about the culture, he is happy.

The Omid Djalili Show will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, January 15 at 8:00pm

Everest ER

Thursday, 15 January 2009

At the foot of Mount Everest, a climber at death’s door comes into the base camp clinic. Can the doctors save his life and fly him out? As the Everest summit season gets underway, climbers are exposed to a lethal range of high altitude illnesses, trauma and frostbite, and the world’s highest clinic gets busier and busier.

This gripping series follows a team of doctors, treating patients including everyone from the elite of the world’s climbing communities, frostbitten and dying from pulmonary oedema, to holiday trekkers with altitude sickness, and local children suffering from all the illnesses you might expect to find in one of the world’s poorest countries.

These volunteers must make life and death decisions on a daily basis, a world away from the facilities of a modern hospital. Evacuation from this altitude is either a two-day walk on the back of a porter or an expensive and dangerous helicopter ride.

Further up the valley, on the Khumbu Glacier itself, sits the Everest base camp clinic. Everest’s magnetism is now such that in the peak climbing season, base camp can be home to thousands of people. And at this altitude, getting sick is a very serious business.

This gripping series follows the lives of these doctors over the course of one Everest season. When the clinic opens early spring, there are queues of local people waiting to be treated. And as the season progresses, the big expeditions roll in – the world’s best climbers, the rich businessmen paying to be guided to the top and the hordes of trekkers slogging up the valley to worship at the feet of the world’s most spectacular mountain.

The Unteachables

Thursday, 15 January 2009 New Series

The Unteachables invited a number of UK kids with serious attendance and behavioural problems in school to take part for five months in a ground-breaking educational project. Special input came from an award-winning teacher, a successful head teacher, a top educational psychologist, a professor of education and six full-time youth workers. Their goal was to help the kids to get more out of their education. 140,000 underachieving and badly behaved schoolchildren were suspended from British schools last year. Is it the system that’s at fault? Or are these kids really unteachable?

Four radical pioneering teachers search for schools willing to participate in their groundbreaking project to turn around bored and disruptive school kids. Education guru Ted Wragg and educational psychologist Vivian Hill lead the search by talking to parents, teachers and hearing stories direct from the kids’ mouths.

Once the three ordinary secondary schools were chosen, Wragg and Hill spent days observing behaviour in classrooms to choose challenging underachievers to participate in the project. Sixteen children from year nine – the year with the highest national rate of exclusion, were chosen. How did the experiment go?

Nigger Lovers

Thursday, 15 January 2009

Nigger Lovers, winner of Best Short Form Documentary at the 2007 Atom Awards, follows one man’s resistance against bigotry and prejudice in the face of overwhelming odds. Stephen Hagan is now known internationally for trying to get the word ‘nigger’ removed from a sign at a sports ground in Queensland’s Toowoomba, a battle which he is fighting all the way to the Bankruptcy Court as he is sued for bankruptcy by the Toowoomba Sports Trust.

The fight is over the name of the sports ground, named after ‘E.S. “Nigger” Brown’, a famous local sporting hero of the 1930s whose nickname was Nigger. It is an Australian tradition to give a nickname to people that is the opposite of their true characteristics, and just as red heads were nicknamed ‘Blue’, E.S. Brown was given the nickname ‘Nigger’ because he was blonde haired, blue eyed and the fairest child his uncle had ever seen.

‘Nigger’ is not just any nickname, though. It is also a derogatory term which symbolises the attitudes held by many white Australians towards Aboriginal people in the 1920s and 1930s, when Indigenous Australians weren’t considered to really be citizens at all, and were denied basic human rights like voting. For Stephen Hagan, it is important to have the sign removed to show that attitudes towards Indigenous Australians have now changed.

The State and Federal Government have both resisted the removal of the ‘E.S. “Nigger” Brown’ sign, and even local Aboriginal residents don’t find the sign offensive. Against this total acceptance of the word, Stephen Hagan, Indigenous Australian of the Year 2007, has challenged the sports club, the city, the state government, the federal government, the High Court, and finally the U.N. His relentless refusal to give up against hate mail, death threats from the KKK, media ridicule, institutional neglect and government indifference is truly inspiring.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:A University of Southern Queensland Production Produced by Darryl Sparkes and Stephen Hagan. Directed by Rhonda Hagan.

Agatha Christie's Miss Marple: The Sittaford Mystery

In this repeated episode of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, a blizzard descends on the isolated village of Sittaford. Miss Marple (Geraldine McEwan) is a guest at Sittaford House, a lonely mansion on the moors. The owner, Clive Trevelyan (Timothy Dalton), an eminent politician tipped to be the next Prime Minister, insists on spending the night at the Three Crowns Inn in Exhampton six miles away, much to the puzzlement of his best friend Enderby (Mel Smith).

A long evening trapped indoors as a result of the snow begins to take a sinister turn when a box of Turkish delight meant for Trevelyan is found to be poisoned and a ouija board spells out that he will be murdered that night. The ouija board is proved correct when Trevelyan is found dead in his room with a knife in his chest and a mysterious smile on his face.

Trevelyan's alcoholic ward, Jim Pearson (Laurence Fox) is the main suspect. His feisty fiancée Emily (Zoe Telford) is determined to prove his innocence and, aided by both eager journalist Charles Burnaby (James Murray) and Miss Marple, sets about piecing together the mysterious events of that night, which involve a secret marriage, Winston Churchill (Robert Hardy), an escaped convict and a priceless Egyptian artefact. Potential suspects include Inn keeper Stanley Kirkwood (James Wilby), local birdwatcher Evadne Willett (Patricia Hodge), her daughter Violet (Carey Mulligan), American businessman Martin Zimmerman (Michael Brandon) and his doctor Ambrose Burt (Paul Kaye).
