    GM builds momentum in

    truck market share

General Motors Co. is going into aredesign year for the full-size pickupsmade at its Fort Wayne Assembly Planton the heels of two successive years ofincreased sales of the models.

Installation of the some of the toolingthat will be required to make theredesigned truck got under way during theweek before Christmas, said StephanieJentgen, plant communication managerfor GMs Fort Wayne Assembly Plant insouthwest Allen County and Marion

Metal Center.Partly because retooling was takingplace in addition to normal equipmentmaintenance and upgrades, a third weekwas added to the traditional two-week,year-end plant shutdown in observance ofwinter holidays.

The retooling will continue after GMemployees return to work on Jan. 9 andwill remain under way over a number ofmonths, Jentgen said.

    Everyone at the plant is very happy,she said. The fact that we were chosen asone of the plants to be making the nextgeneration of trucks tells us we puttogether the best business case (for theproduct), that we have been recognizedfor building award-winning pickup trucks;

and its a testament to our future thatwell be building pickup trucks through at

least the next big platform, which tends tohappen every six to 10 years. So itsreally good.

The plant employs 270 salaried and3,340 hourly workers making full-sizeChevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierrapickups. Hourly workers are representedby United Auto Workers Local 2209.

The plant already is extremely short inhead count, and this next-generationtruck were building is going to bringhundreds of new jobs into this plant, shop chairman Rich LeTourneau said. There are more parts associated with thetruck and more hours per vehicle,

    compared with the old model.

Initial visits with thenurse practitioners areusually about an hourlong, which gives Salserand Gladd time to learnwho the patient really is.

She is also trained in a

Local resident LanahHake had the inspirationto start Ft Wayne OutdoorYoga this summer, after atrip.

I truly love teachingyoga, she said. I loveour local parks and after atrip in Baja, Mexico, where I did lots of yogaon the beach, I thoughtwhy not offer Fort Wayneoutdoor yoga?

She taught weeklyTuesday classes atFreimann Square duringthe lunch hour on Tues-days and also on

Wednesday evenings atLakeside Park during thesummer.

Hake said the environ-ment of the outdoorshelped set the space forpractice.

It is a great way to getfresh air, connect with theearth and nature and comeback into balance, allwhile getting people toenjoy [the] beauty of ourcity, parks and buildcommunity, she said.

But for the winterseason, Hake has beenteaching in the BotanicalGardens at the Foellinger-

    Freimann BotanicalConservatory.

It was a surprise to mewhen the outdoor groupasked if wed move itindoors, but I was happyto explore the idea, shesaid. Three people in oneweek suggested [the]Botanical Gardens, so Ifigured I should call them.Amazingly, they werevery excited about theidea.

Shortly after a pressrelease was sent out, sheand Mitch Sheppard,Manager of the Conserva-tory, were invited onNIPR for a half hoursegment.

Yoga in the Garden, isoffered Wednesdays from

5:30-6:30 p.m., forstudents of all levels. Theclasses are $5 formembers of the Conserva-tory and $7 fornon-members.

Preregistration is notrequired, but studentsshould arrive 10 minutesbefore class time. It issuggested to bring yourown blanket or mat, although a few are avail-able

if that is not possible. All participants will beasked to sign a waiver ateach class, confirmingsuitable health for prac-tice. The classes aredesigned for people

15 and up and are notintended for women who

    are pregnant.Certified as a 200 hour

work in integrative medi-cine has changed her ownlife. It changed myhealth, she said.

It made me under-stand why I had what Ihad. I saw the effects ofhow it impacted ourwhole family.

In 2000, she started theHealth and WellnessClinic at IPFW.

Im so passionateabout helping others, shesaid.

She focuses on preven-tion as a way of helpingher patients reduceunhealthy habits beforethey have more seriousailments.

Zeroing in one stress isanother aspect of the prac-tice both like to focus on.Salser said the physicaland emotional stressorsthat people have todayhave impacted nutrients

and absorption. She said that looking at

    the whole body is impor-

tant for helping a patient. We look at your bodylike a house, she said. Ifyour house went throughthis big earthquake, wewant to fix the foundation. We might use supple-ments so your housedoesnt fall apart. We lookat whats causing theproblem, Salser said.

Visits to GladdMD alsoinclude the advice from aintegrative dietician,Meghann Whetstone, whogives patients resourcesfor where to get food inthe local community.

Whetstone also suggestsrecipes, blogs and cook-books for special foodconsiderations.

Salser said parasites, bacterial overgrowth andfood intolerances cancause major problems, including neurologicalconditions.

She has seen caseswhere neurological condi-tions have been caused by

a parasite in the body.At the end of the day,

Gladd and Salser saidthey want patients to feelcomfortable coming to seethem.

We give them the toolsthey need to improve theirhealth, she said.

We want them toembrace what works forthem. Were not judg-mental and they donthave to feel guilty whenthey come in and haventmet their goals. Theirlifestyle might be differentfrom what ours is.

Embracing the patient isthe main purpose of inte-grative medicine and it isone that has led to word-of-mouth marketingsuccess for GladdMD.

    Official: Fed mandateshortchanging water upgrades

An official in Indianas second-largest city says a federally-requiredupgrade to Fort Waynes drinkingwater disinfection system will forcethe city to slash its efforts to replaceaging water pipes. A city boardapproved a $177 million utility

budget for 2012 that includes $19.2million to convert the treatment plantfrom chemical to ultraviolet lightdisinfectant. That project is requiredby a federal water quality mandate. But deputy director of engineeringMatthew Wirtz says the 2012 budget

means the city will only be able toreplace about 2 1/2 miles of waterdelivery pipes. Thats far below thecitys goal of replacing 12 miles ofpipe each year. Wirtz says the city hasbeen experiencing more water mainbreaks because of aging pipes.

Very little information has beenreleased on the next-generation pickup. That scarcity of news extends to any offi-cial word on when it will be out, althoughsome dealers have been told to expect itin the spring of 2013.

All Ive heard is its really nice andmore of an evolution than revolution,Jentgen said.

In a previous announcement on GMsdecision to invest $275 million in the

plant and create or retain 150 jobs, LarryZahner, GM manufacturing manager, saidthe redesign would enable the Detroit-based company to continue buildingaward-winning pickups that offer betterfuel efficiency than ever before withoutsacrificing features and functionality.

A bump up in demand that oftenfollows a product redesign is not neededto reverse any recent sales or marketshare trend with the Silverado or Sierra.

Sierra sales for the first 11 months of2011 were 132,675 units, which was upfrom 129,794 for all of 2010 and 111,842for all of 2009.

Silverado sales rose in 2010 to 370,175units from 316,544 the year before.

Silverado sales during the first 11 monthsof 2011 were 367,343, for a monthlyaverage of 33,395. Unless they reallydropped off a cliff in December, the 2011total will exceed 2010s.

Todays trucks are doing very well andhave gained market share inside of thefull-size pickup segment in 2011, andthats against some very stiff competi-tion, said Jim Cain, a spokesman for GMsales.

Through November this year, the Sierrahad 9.9 percent of the market, which wasup from 9.3 percent for the same periodlast year. The Silverado had 27.3 percentof the market through November, up from27 percent for the comparable 2010period.

Its a great truck and we also havebeen working very hard to developstronger relationships with commercialcustomers and tradespeople and businesspeople who use trucks for work building on our historic strength with theeveryday truck customer who uses it forfarming, construction and recreation,Cain said.

Silverados and Sierras are doing evenbetter with market share in Fort Wayne

than they are nationally, according toChuck Kelley, general manager for KelleyChevrolet on Illinois Road.

With full-size pickups, nationally,Ford outsells Chevy a little, but in thismarket we kill them, Kelley said.

Based on the most recent new vehiclelicense plate registration data, at the endof September Chevrolet had 41 percent ofthe local full-size pickup market followedby: Ford with 28.3 percent; GMC with 13percent; Dodge with 11.5 percent; andToyota with 3.2 percent.

The preferred pricing and employeevehicle allowance GM workers get on thecompanys products sure doesnt hurtany, does it? But Chevy has always

been the market leader in full-size trucksin this area and in this state, Kelley said.Chevys local market share is up from

40.8 percent and GMCs is up from 12.6percent, partly because of ongoing salesand marketing efforts, Kelley said.

Theyre a great truck with some greatoffers on them right now. Its all aboutwhat do you get for what you spend,Kelley said.

Truck enthusiasts will get a look at theredesigned Silverado and Sierra at autoshows next fall or early next winter, andI think they will bring more passion topeople looking to replace their pickupsagain, Kelley said.

It will move the needle one more timeupward.

    Your pipes do not.

Theres nothing worse than a burst

pipe in the dead o winter. With

    temperatures alling and winter

on the horizon, now is the time to

    protect your pipes. Fortunately,

Aqua Indiana has some simple tips

that you can do to lessen the impact

    o reezing temperatures and protect

    your home.

    Remember, plumbing located against

    exterior walls in unheated basements

    and crawl spaces is particularly

vulnerable to the cold and at highest

    risk o reezing and breaking.

    Eliminate Drafts. Close crawl spaces,

vents and doors. Repair broken or

    cracked basement windows. Make

    sure basement doors and windows

    close tightly.

Insulate Pipes. Be sure pipes in

unheated parts o your property, including crawl spaces, are protected

by properly installing heat tape or pipe

insulation ound at most hardware and

    plumbing supply stores.

    Remove Outdoor Hoses. Exterior

aucets and hoses are frst to reeze.

    Remove or the season between

    October 15 and November 1.

And when its really cold, 10 degrees

or less, or you arent home, leave a thin

stream o water running rom at least

    one tap arthest rom the water meter;

open cabinet doors below sinks to allow

warm home air to better circulate (always

remove cleaners and chemicals to keep

out o reach o small children).

If your pipes freeze and you can locate

the rozen section, use a handheld hair

dryer to thaw the area. Hold the dryer

about six inches rom the pipe and move

the dryer slowly back and orth. I this

method ails ater a reasonable period o

    time, call your plumber immediately.

Finding foundationMany people suffer from diagnoses like irritable bowel

syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, or fibromyalgia. While it is helpful to have an answer to the debilitatingsymptoms, labeling you with a syndrome hardly helps toget your health back on track. Rather, these labels largelyprovide two things, neither of which help you feel better:

a code for insurancecompany submissions and alist of pharmaceuticaloptions. I am in no way

saying your symptoms arein your head, quite to thecontrary. These symptomsare very real and verydisabling. But they areexactly that: symptoms. Weneed a framework forworking backward, ratherthan merely treating symp-toms. It is time to scratchthe surface and understandthe root of how you gothere.

To do this, compare yourbody to a house. Symptoms like fatigue or digestive prob-lems are external manifestations like the roof needingreplaced or maybe the siding is falling off. Those arecosmetic issues that you know can be replaced. Where

your focus should really be is the foundation. If the foun-dation is cracked, you are going to have a tough time forthe future years in your home.

Maybe youre suffering from chronic fatigue (roof),and cannot sleep soundly (siding). While we want tospend some time focusing on your symptoms, what wereally ought to be doing is looking at the foundationissues that are driving these downstream problems.

Your health foundation is built on three overlappingareas:

    - Nutrition:Your body needs a variety of foods thatcome directly or very nearly directly from nature.

Consuming a diet that is mainly fresh or frozen vegeta-bles and fruits, nuts, beans, eggs and wildcaught/grass-fed/free-range protein is essential. The morewe rely on the convenience of heavily processed andpulverized food-like products and restaurant producedfare loaded with salt and lab-created fats, the more ourfoundation weakens.

    - Emotional Peace: Stress comes from all directions:relationships, finances, diet, the environment. Regardlessof its source, the body responds the same way. Overweeks upon months upon years, the body under stressbegins to break down. A daily practice for stress manage-ment (since avoidance is often impossible) is crucial.Praying, breathing, laughing, loving, forgiving, and exer-cising are only a few tools for your toolbox.

    - The Gut: The digestive system is the center of health, housing the majority of your bodys immune system. Asyour gut goes, so you go. A healthy digestive system

requires whole foods, regular stress management andavoiding antibiotics unless absolutely needed.

So imagine your body as a house. Is your foundationsolid enough for the years you will need it? If your roofis leaking and your door is falling off its hinges, dont

just focus on quick fixes. Look deeper, look for thereasons why. Its likely that it has everything to do withthe choices youre making, or not making every day.

    Time for New Years

Financial ResolutionsOnce again, its time to make

    some New Years resolutions.

This year, in addition to hittingthe gym, learning that second

    language and getting better

    organized, why not also

    consider a fewfinancial

    resolutions?

    What types of resolutions

might you consider? Here are a

    few suggestions:

    Contribute more to your

    retirement accounts. The new

year means that you are one

    year closer to retirement. To

    help yourself build resources

    for the lifestyle youve

envisioned as a retiree, try to

    boost your contributions to

    your 401(k) or otheremployer-sponsored retirement

plan. You can do this if you get

a salary increase and devote at

least part of it to your 401(k).

At the same time, try to max

    out on your Individual

    Retirement Account (IRA). For

2012, you can contribute up to

$5,000 to an IRA, or $6,000 if

    youre 50 or older.

    Reduce your debts. Look for

ways to cut down or consoli-

date your debts. It may not be

easy, but its worth the effort

    because the lower your debt

    load, the more money youll

have available to invest for thefuture.

    Build an emergency fund. If

    you dont already have an

    emergency fund containing

    between six and 12 months

    worth of living expenses, start

    building one soon. Keep the

    money in a liquid vehicle

    one thats separate from your

    everyday checking and savings

    accounts. Without such an

    emergency fund, you may be

forced to dip into your long-

    term investments to pay for

    unexpected costs, such as a

major car repair, a new furnace

or a large medical bill. Dont overreact to volatility.

    In 2011, the financial markets

    have been volatile, with big

    gains followed by big drops

followed by big gains a true

    roller-coaster pattern. Try not to

    let large, short-term price

    movements influence your

    investment decisions. Many of

the factors that cause jumps or

declines are not that relevant to

    long-term results and as an

investor, you want to focus on

    the long term. Concentrate on

building a portfolio thatssuitable for your individual

    goals and risk tolerance.

Be aware of different types of

    risk. For many investors,

    investment risk strictly means

    the possibility of losing princi-

pal when the value of an

    investment drops. Conse-

quently, to cut back on their

risk in the face of a volatile

market, they may sell off stocks

and load up on certificates of

    deposit (CDs), bonds and other

    so-called safer investments.

    But each investment actually

carries its own type of risk. Forexample, if you own CDs that

pay a 2 percent return, and the

inflation rate is 3 percent, you

    will lose purchasing power over

time. And if you wanted to sell

    your bonds before they had

    matured, youd have to sell

them at a discount if the

    market interest rate had risen

above the coupon rate of your

    bond because no one would

pay you full price for them. Just

be aware that no investment is

risk-free, and try to build a

diversified portfolio that canlessen the impact of one

    specific type of risk.

This is a guest columnby Bill Etzler, who hasbeen Vice

President/RegionalManager of Aqua Indianasince July 1999. A FortWayne native, Bill nowlives in rural NobleCounty. He is a boardmember for the Little

    River Wetlands Project.

What does an eggshellhave in common withground water in AboiteTownship? Calciumcarbonate. I ts theprimary ingredient ineggshells, and its whatmakes hard water leavespots on your showerdoor.

To avoid dragging upbad memories of a highschool chemistry quiz, Ill

spare you the details ofhow ionization causesCaCO3 deposits in yourwater and focus instead onhow Aqua Indiana gets it

    out.The human body isnt

harmed by hard water; itsan aesthetic annoyance.Hard water results in soapscum, bad tasting coffeeand scale build-up on theinside of boilers and waterpipes. Last year, Aqua

Indiana completed thework necessary to softenthe ground water weprocess and send to yourhome.

Aqua installed specialfilters at our threeprocessing plants toremove the calcium andmagnesium dissolvedfrom bedrock andsuspended in groundwater.

This improvement costabout $3.5 million dollars, but delivers both animmediate and long-termcustomer benefit.

Aquas tap water nowroutinely tests at 120-130

parts per million fordissolved minerals, a verytypical level of hardnessin softened municipalwater systems in Indiana.

Aqua Indiana customersmay find they no longerneed to install a watersoftener. Those with water

softeners report theyrenot lugging heavy bags ofsalt to the basement orgarage nearly so often.

Since a typical bag ofsalt costs $6.00, we esti-mate customers can saveup to $12/month or $144per year.

Laundry detergent, bathsoap and other cleaningproducts are far moreeffective in soft water.Softened water also limitsthe accumulation ofminerals (scale) on theinside of your householdplumbing, making it last

longer and reducing main-tenance. Older homes

with years of calciumcarbonate accumulation intheir pipes may still haveslightly higher hardnesslevels.

While our areas groundwater is hardened fromcontact with rocks andsediment, it has a clear

advantage over usingsurface water as adrinking source here in

the corn belt; noAtraZine. The herbicidewas banned in Europe in2004, but remains widelyused in the USA and else-where around the world.

The good news is thatsame bedrock and soilwhich contribute to hard

water in our area filtersout this and other surfacepollutants long before it

reaches the 300-foot deepwells which are the sourceof Aqua Indianas watersupply.

The next time you makescrambled eggs, study thateggshell before you sendit down the garbagedisposal.

Thats the one pipewhere calcium carbonatebelongs.
