INTRODUCTION

Tourism industry is becoming a back bone of economics around the world. An increasing

number of tourists distribute high revenue to a country. Nevertheless, the capacity of those tourism

destinations need to be developed in order to match with tourists’ demand. To achieve this, public

and private sectors should work together to maximize market share from world tourism industry.

Due to the changing behavior of tourists and trend of tourism, especially sustainability

tourism, a new tourists’ group is emerged. This group of tourists focuses on experience learnt

while travelling to new places or participating activity with local community. Among these new

trends, health tourism is becoming popular in Thailand. This type of tourism provides chance of

travel together with health promoting. Consequently, a number of new health promoting services

has emerged. The Thai government has promoted health tourism for both domestic and

international market. Other private sectors, such as private hospital, response this policy by

offering health care and beauty treatment. In another aspect, a community provides health care

service, such as Thai massage and spa, for tourists as well.

The previous research found that there is a need to develop tourism destination in some

main cities in the southern part of Thailand. These cities, from the statistics, have good natural

resources for promoting health tourism. Especially those cities located along side with the west

coastal of Thai Gulf have a high potential to be a health tourism destination due to its nature

enrichment. Because of its management style, however, has decrease the effectiveness of their

marketing campaign. Therefore, in order to develop the potential of these tourism destination, the

researcher conducted a research to study tourist’ preferences and their expectation while visiting to

these places. Consequently, it will be used to increase the competitiveness of those local

communities in nationwide tourism market.

LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Health tourism defined

Health tourism refers to a tourist who travels to other places with purpose of studying new

culture and environment as well as participating with health care promotion activity, such as

medical check, cosmetic surgery, or other types of physical recovery (Mueller & Kaufmann,

2001). Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) defines health tourism according to objectives of

tourism activity as follow.

1.1 Health promotion tourism refers to traveling from one place to another in order to learn

the local life, nature and culture. The activity offering in these places is dealing with health

promotion standardized service within and outside accommodation.

1.2 Health healing tourism refers to traveling to a place that prepared particularly for health

healing, such as local community enriched with natural environment or standardized hospital.

It can be concluded that health tourism refers to traveling for treating health, improving

physical as well as mental health through health-related activities. These activities include spa and

massage (Tantivetchakul, 2003).

2. Health tourism in Ban Thung Pradu

For broad perspective, health tourism has been promoted in the country’s strategic plan.

This plan has been identified as “Thailand as world class healthcare destination” (Department of

Trade Negotiations, 2011) . During year 2013 to 2015, Thailand experienced 7 percent of health

tourism growth rate. This had been accounted as 3.2 trillion baht which ranked 13th of world

market and 4th of Asia region (Advanced Business Magazine, 2017). From this trend, it has been

proved that health tourism trend is becoming popular domestically and internationally. However,

mostly the main economic cities like Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai are ranked at the

top of final destinations for tourists. This makes other cities receive less attention from tourists. In

order to increase number of incoming tourists from abroad, the government is trying to promote

Page 26: Academic Conference on Educational & Social Innovations AC ...€¦ · Confidential 21 บทความวิจัย Tourist Preferences and Expectations on Health Tourism of

denti

al

23

tourism in other unseen cities. Among these, Prachuap Khiri Khan province is one of the

provinces that is rich with natural resources, such as sea, mountain, reserved forest, and coast. The

area of Prachuap Khiri Khan is connected by Petchkasem road which is one of four major

highways in Thailand and is also located near Asian highway AH2 (Department of Rural Roads,

2013). This province is said to located in a strategic tourism area due to it is connected by several

transportations, such as public bus, train, and private car. Thus, the province has a high potential

to be a tourism destination.

According to Siriwan (2019), Ban Thung Pradu, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Province is a tourist attraction that operates by a community. This community manages the

attraction using resources-based plan. The operational process relies on their local characteristics,

the philosophy of sufficiency economy, the management of resources and the environment in

order to create a sustainable community-based health tourism. The researcher found that there are

four type of health tourism promoted in this community; body relaxation, healthcare promotion,

healing, and rejuvenating. These health tourism promotions create impressions and experiences of

exotic tourism as well as consciousness of the conservation of local culture, such as Thung Pradu

temple, fisheries, sand spa and organic agriculture. This study also suggested that this community

has a high potential of health tourism. The problem and obstacles, however, still exist. Local

government agency does not cooperate with local community. Meanwhile a lack of expertise in

tourism management and service leads to hard-to-achieve systematic management in all level of

operation.
