Career in brief

I graduated from the University of Copenhagen in 1998 with an MA thesis in Hispanic philology and

a minor in International Studies from Aalborg University. Later the same year I was admitted as a

PhD-student at the Department of History and Civilization at the European University Institute (EUI)

in Florence, Italy, where in 2004 I defended my PhD thesis on the Refoundation of a national

discourse on Spain after Franco. Seven months later I took up the position of Assistant Professor at

Copenhagen Business School and in 2008 as Associate Professor in Spanish Cultural and Social

Analysis with particular focus on Spanish Identity in Spain, Europe and Latin America.

Research profile and projects

Through involvement in various large-scale research projects I have developed a research focus on

the Spanish case in comparative perspective with particular attention to defining its weaknesses

and strengths. Post-Franco Spain is in many ways just another Western European country that

presents many of the same characteristics as the rest of the countries of the region. Yet, due to its

twentieth century history of civil war, long-lasting nationalist dictatorship, non-participation in the

two World Wars and its negotiated transition to democracy, the country represents a particular

development. The transition with its particular characteristics was to have profound influence on a

number of features of the new democracy, such as, for example, the democracy with its electoral

system, which favours a bi-party system and strong regionally based political parties, on one hand,

and the relationship with the past of dictatorship and civil war, on the other.

I have researched these themes continuously over the years as they have been the object of criticism

of spontaneous social demands from the Association for the Recuperation of Historical Memory

created in 2000 and the so-called 15-M movement emerging in 2011, among others. Other more

recent developments in Spanish society, such as the rise of the new political party Podemos or the

secessionist crisis of Catalonia, also represent evidence that the foundation of the post-

authoritarian democracy is being reconsidered these years; the agreements on which it rests are no

longer accepted as unnegotiable elements without which the democracy and the social balances in

Spanish society will break up. Democracy is now perceived to be strong enough for discussion and

criticism of the founding elements essential to its coming into being. These developments mean

that the legitimacy of the discourse on the Spanish nation is shifting, and these shifts have always

been a focal point of my research.

One of the main proofs of the innovation in and quality of my research is the fact that I have

participated in various international research projects both after invitation and after application.

Between 2008 and 2013, I was part in a cross-disciplinary research project on Spanish nationalism

on the left-wing funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, hosted at the University

Pablo de Olavide in Seville, and directed by Professor Antonia María Ruiz Jiménez.

In 2013 I obtained a Marie Curie mobility-grant from the EU to do research for two years at Uni-

versity Pablo de Olavide. The research project, which by no means is over although the scholarship

has ended, centres on an investigation of the changes which has happened in the interaction

between the various national and regional discourses in Spain since the transition to democracy.
