Politics, as it is practiced in ourcountry, is not my cup of tea. How-

ever, if politics, as defined in MerriamWebster’s Dictionary is to be taken asa guideline, I am all for it. Webster’sdescribes politics as the art or science

of governance, the art or science con-

cerned with guiding or influencing

government policy, and the art and

science concerned with winning and

holding control over a government.View it from any of these three anglesyou like, the recently held general

elections and its outcome will tell youthe story of a nation coming of age,and a billion-strong electorate that

constitutes the world’s largest democ-racy, attaining maturity enough to tellthe world that, yes, India is finally readyto endorse the art and science of goodpolitics, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially, to quote fromJawaharlal Nehru’s Tryst With Destinyspeech!

It was Winston Churchill who infamous-ly remarked prior to us winning free-dom that Indians are not fit to governthemselves; they will only make a mock-ery of democracy. Unfortunately for us,

it turned outto be pro-phetic, sev-eral timesover the pastsix decadesof our histo-ry. The willof the peoplee x p r e s s e dthrough elec-

tion after election did not translate intothe good of the aam admi, the commonman. And finally, the first half of the

1990s changed it all forthe better when India took courage

and unshackled itself from wornout

ideologies and opened up itself for the

world to come and join in its re-dis-

covery. Destiny had painstakingly pre-

pared a discoverer in the person of Dr.

Manmohan Singh, who as Finance Min-

ister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasim-

ha Rao, helped awaken India from its

slumber, the outcome of which is there

for all of us to see, partake of and

benefit from, especially so for us in

IT, for whom a whole new world has

been opened up to experiment with.

The recent elections, the result of

which has ensured that India has po-

litical and administrative continuity, will go down in history as a landmarkin our quest to seek and enhance

change. A gov-ernment of thepeople, by thepeople and(hopefully) forthe people canperform wellonly if there are

no roadblocks in its path. While, dur-

ing the past five years, Dr. Manmohan

Singh’s bandwagon of governance was

slowed down by road blocks, in this

second turn he has no such hiccups to

fear from. People of India have cho-

sen well, and most of the members of

the lower house of our parliament are

well educated, dedicated, and com-

mitted to the cause of politics, which,

as I said earlier, is the art or science

of governance, policy making and win-

ning, and controlling the levers of pow-

er.

At long last we have proven Winston

Churchill wrong. However, our lead-

ers and administrators should contin-

ue to strive to prove Boise Penrose also

wrong, who in 1931 wrote in Collier’s

weekly: Public office is the last ref-

uge of a scoundrel.

This is their best chance to prove it.

Let’s wish them Godspeed in the task.

The global economy is still in tailspin mode. No one knows when it

will stabilize, whether share priceswill move northwards or dividends willhappen to spread a smile of cheeraround. Mega corporations are shy andreluctant to come out with their an-nual results simply because there isnothing much to show by way of prof-its or returns. This is especially trueof the IT industry where the crisisseems to be deepening day after day.

It therefore was welcomed as a breathof fresh air when Accentia’s Board ofDirectors, after due deliberations, approved a final dividend payment of20% on face value to its shareholders, based on the company’s performancein 2008-09. This proves that there is

room for hope even in the season of

KARGIL REMEMBERED Sathyajit K.K.

Lest we forget….Lest we forget….Lest we forget….Lest we forget….Lest we forget….

Ajay Ahuja, Amol Kalia, Manoj Kumar

Pandey, Anuj Nayyar,Padhmaphani Acharya,Vikram Batra, Vishwa-nathan….. do thesenames sound familiar?

Of course, in a land withcraze for movies andcricket, they would belesser mortals, but thesebrave men have immor-talized themselves in ourhistory in no less way.

Yes, Squadron LeaderAjay Ahuja, Captain AmolKalia, Lt. Manoj KumarPandey, Captain AnujNayyar, Major Padh-maphani Acharya, Cap-tain Vikram Batra, Lt.Col. Vishwanathan, arejust a handful of namesamong the hundreds ofbrave soldiers whofought valiantly and paidthe supreme sacrifice inone of India’s greatestwar victories on thesnow-clad mountains of

Kargil, ten years ago.

It might be called a diplomaticor technological victory, but nowords can pay enough tribute tothe courage of our Indian sol-diers who fought in the tough-est of conditions against an en-emy sitting on a hilltop and notvisible.

Taking advantage of the peaceinitiatives undertaken by India,Pakistani militants aided by Pa-kistan Army regulars occupiedstrategic peaks in Kashmir, witha sinister motive to cut off Kash-mir from the rest of India. What

followed was a long, strainingcombat in the treacherous Hima-layan terrain. The army cameunder heavy fire from the top,but came out victorious, finallyrecapturing all the peaks. Op-eration Vijay, as it was called, was one of India’s most well-planned and well-executed mil-itary operations.

Even as India celebrated, ourhearts went out to the familiesof those who didnot return.Their tales ofvalor spread rap-

idly acrossthe coun-try. Peoplet h r o n g e dtheir homesto have alast glimpseof theseyoung menwho laiddown theirlives for the country. Their fu-nerals were attended by thou-sands, and their families, in theirtime of grief, were supported bythe whole society.

Who were they? Youngsters of anaverage age of 25, some who hadjust got engaged, some waitingto return home for marriage, some whose leaves were can-celled for the call of duty, somewho were expecting their firstchild. The stories go on, eachand every one a tale of grit andvalor, of families receiving thelifeless bodies with pride in theireyes, wives and fiancées control-

ling their emo-tions in front ofall, small chil-dren having to

light the funeral pyres oftheir fathers, familieswho sent all their chil-dren to war, colleagueswho had to escort friends

draped in tricolor. Theirdeeds have become folk-lore.

July 26th each year iscelebrated as Vijay Divas, when we captured thelast peak from the infil-trators. These men, I amsure, would not want anymega cultural shows orcharity work in theirmemory; just a silentprayer from our hearts, remembering them andthanking them for whatthey did for us, wouldjust suffice to keep theirmemories fresh in ourminds.

JEREEN’S COLUMN

Managing a Large Staff EffectivelyManaging a Large Staff EffectivelyManaging a Large Staff EffectivelyManaging a Large Staff EffectivelyManaging a Large Staff EffectivelyJereen Mathew

Watching a team growcan be both exhilarat-

ing and terrifying. You en-joy the pride of being aleader of a bigger team aswell as think of increasedearnings coming with theresponsibilities, but alsoworry about keeping upwith the demand of manag-ing this bigger team. Whenyou have a team or depart-ment growing it gets prettyintense in managing withoutfacing too many team orpeople related issues. Howcan a leader keep up withthe pace of growth? Pay at-

tention. It’s easy to focuson your own work when youhave a large and able staffsupporting you. But if youneglect your people for toolong, you could be in trou-ble. It’s important to payattention to how your peo-ple are doing. Are theyovertaxed — consistentlyworking long hours and/orunder too much pressure? Are you articulating theteam objectives in a waythey understand?

Learn how to tolerate

growing pains. Before youcan withstand the pangs ofgrowth, you must ask your-self questions like, “Is myteam/department ready forgrowth?” “How can I pre-pare my employees forgrowth?” “What kinds of

problems do I foresee, and doI have adequate resources tohandle them properly?” Ac-commodating growth doesn’toccur overnight; you mustbecome comfortable with theprocess of managing yourgrowth.

Implement a system for per-

formance management. Nomatter how skillful your staffmay be, you must always pro-vide a mechanism for employ-ee feedback. With a smallstaff it’s easier to conductinformal reviews, but as youadd more people, this taskbecomes more challenging. You need to ensure that per-formance reports are moni-tored and feedback given ina regular manner

Match people with projects.

With a large staff, it’s easy(even tempting) to assumepeople are doing their appro-priate tasks adequately. Let’sface it: it’s not easy to keepup with what’s on everyone’splate. One way to avoid los-

ing track is to make sure youmatch people with the rightprojects/activities. If some-one is mismatched with aparticular task that couldslow down the whole teamat the same time compro-mise the quality of servicedelivery. Effectively aligningyour resources with the ap-propriate function adds tothe efficiency of your team.

Commit to training and de-

velopment. Identifying ap-propriate educational op-portunities, and makingthem available, lets yourpeople know that you’re in-terested and invested intheir professional develop-ment. Providing them withthe tools to do their bestwork will keep them moti-vated and increase their loy-alty to the company. If youare head of a team or a de-partment then continuouseducation on the instruc-tions or process changesshould be informed to your

team in atimely fash-ion.

Create a collaborative and

friendly culture. It’s just afact of life: the more peo-ple you have, the greaterthe chance of conflict. Cre-ate a workplace character-ized by mutual trust and re-spect. High ethical stand-ards should be the norm, and those who cannot abideby company rules shouldface the consequences. Beconsistent and firm but re-spectful, too. Communi-cate what’s expected, anddemonstrate your commit-ment to that standard.

Simulate a small staff en-vironment when you can.Occasionally, you mighthear someone grumblingabout the size of your staff:“I don’t know anyone any-more” or “Who’s that?” Youcan’t stop growth (well, you can, but you probablydon’t want to), but you cansimulate a “small office”ambiance. Get everyonetogether for spontaneousevents such as birthdays, weekly meetings or any so-cial gathering. Use plat-forms such as our monthlynewsletter to let everyonewithin your department orother departments know ofactivities in your team/de-partment.
