Whether it be for anxiety, phobias, habit change, focus, performance, motivation, physical healing or any other personal challenge, clinical hypnosis offers a natural, safe , yet powerful method of helping transform your life.

Geoff Sweeting , Hypnotherapist at the Insight Health Centre, sees his work as a unique approach to caring holistically for his clients, and offers a soothing remedy for today’s hectic lifestyle. “Hypnosis is a natural healing modality that can benefit many of our unconscious mind-body interactions. During our normal waking life we are often preoccupied with the basic distractions around us. Work, family, friends and other interests tend to keep us busy. Most of us rarely get the chance to slow down and begin a meaningful inward journey to uncover our fullest potential.

Hypnosis is the perfect way to help unlock the personal power that resides within us. It offers a safe and effective way to shift the deeper , more ingrained limitations that we may experience in responding to life’s challenges. The hypnotic state creates the space for new learning. That’s the real strength of this art, helping us to learn and change in a free, open and healing way that comes directly from the inner self.”

Many people are curious about hypnosis as a possible means for making changes in their life, but may have some misconceptions about what happens during a session. Geoff explains that sessions are generally relaxing, and help inspire a sense of personal empowerment.

“The easiest way to explain what happens during hypnosis is that you are sitting back in a comfortable chair with eyes closed, or open if you prefer, letting me guide you to a greater focus of attention. As you grow more comfortable, there is a sense of freely drifting along in a daydream-like state as you listen to beneficial suggestions. The changes are all happening at the unconscious level, so you don’t have to force it or consciously try too hard.

Most clients really enjoy the experience and find it comfortable, interesting and often even quite profound. It really is amazing how it works. It‘s like real magic.”

Benefit One: Avoid Muscle Loss

Adults who do not strength train lose between 5-7 pounds of muscle every decade (Forbes 1976, Evans and Rosenberg 1992). Although endurance exercise improves our cardiovascular fitness, it does not prevent the loss of muscle tissue. Only strength exercise maintains our muscle mass and strength throughout our mid-life years.

Benefit Two: Avoid Metabolic Rate Reduction

Muscle is a very active tissue; muscle loss is accompanied by a reduction in our resting metabolism. Information from Keyes et al. (1973) and Evans and Rosenberg (1992) indicate that the average adult experiences a 2-5 percent reduction in metabolic rate every decade of life. Because regular strength exercise prevents muscle loss it also prevents the accompanying decrease in resting metabolic rate.

Benefit Three: Increase Muscle Mass

Most adults do not perform strength exercise; they need to first replace the muscle tissue that has been lost through inactivity. Fortunately, research (Westcott 1995) shows that a standard strength training program can increase muscle mass by about 3 pounds over a Week training period. This is the typical training response for men and women who do 25 minutes of strength exercise, 3 days per week, and represents an excellent return on a time-efficient investment.

Trying to lose weight? Be sure to eat breakfast

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People who are trying to lose weight may hinder their odds of success by skipping breakfast, according to a new study that found that skipping the first meal of the day biases your brain

toward craving high-calorie foods over low-calorie foods.

"When people are fasting -- in this case skipping breakfast -- this obviously leads to people being hungrier, but it also leads to greater activity in areas of the brain involved in reward," Dr. Anthony Goldstone from Imperial College London, UK, told The Endocrine Society's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

"In addition, we find that when people are fasting they also prefer high-calorie foods to low-calorie foods," he added.

The findings are based on brain imaging studies performed in 20 nonobese healthy people who were shown pictures of low-calorie foods (salad, vegetables and fish) and high-calorie foods (cake, chocolate, and pizza) and asked to rate how appealing the pictures were after a filling breakfast or after no breakfast at all.

Past studies, Goldstone noted, have shown that people who skip breakfast on a regular basis actually tend to be heavier, tend to get more of their calories from fat, and also tend to gain more weight over the years than those who eat break-fast regularly.

The new study suggests a possible mechanism by which this might occur.

"It may be that when you miss meals, and maybe particularly breakfast, your brain reward system is biased towards these high-calorie foods over the low-calorie foods," Goldstone said, "and this would be an entirely appropriate response of the body in a defense to try to maintain calorie intake."

"This may then be an explanation for why people who miss meals in an attempt to lose weight - something that is used by 30 percent to 40 percent of people trying to lose weight - may actually hinder their attempts to lose weight and actually may have an opposite effect and gain weight,"

Goldstone said.

These results, he added, support current medical advice to eat a healthy breakfast to prevent weight gain and aid in weight loss

Competition Preparation & Nutrition Advice

ARE YOU FULLFILLED?TAKE YOURSELF TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Take the time to reconnect with yourself

Are you the person you thought you would be? Are you

living the life you envisioned, or have you unwittingly

conformed into a product of modern society? Living day

in and day out, stuck in the norm, the humdrum, blah!

Striving for things that don’t make you happy is futile and

exhausting. Find out what fulfils YOU..you may be very

surprised how simple it can be!

Each of us are at a different stage of the life path. Some of

you are trekking through rocky terrain, others are tired and

weary with little inspiration, maybe you have temporarily

lost your way. Being true to yourself and connected to your

authentic self cultivates a new understanding of who you

are, which brings the self-awareness needed to get what you

want out of life with much more ease, grace and joy.

Who we are is largely a product of our upbringing and other

impressionable environments that have influenced our core

make up and beliefs. Life presents us with many choices…

You have the choice to stay attached to your conditioned

beliefs and behaviours, or the choice to recreate your very

own self-beliefs to support your success.

If you don’t have a good understanding of who you are,

then how on earth can you be living in a way that offers you

the best life possible? When you lack clarity, passion and

purpose, each day can be a grind and draining, you then

wonder why you are so exhausted! Most of the time we

exhaust ourselves! Of course, you may have the occasional

sparkle, yet as a whole the every-day is lack lustre.

It doesn’t have to be difficult or complicated. Once you

recognise that you may be out of integrity, or unfulfilled

and are ready for change, then a happier you is achievable

for everyone. Fine-tuning your inner compass will help you

navigate through life with more clarity, positive direction,

energy and personal fulfilment.

I often ask my clients - What does your ultimate life look like,

what do you enjoy doing, what is important to you (values),

what do you get lost in, or what puts a smile on your face?

These questions seem simple, yet not always easy to answer.

It is quite amazing how so many of us have allowed even the

simplest things that make us feel good to disappear out of our lives.

Re-engaging in the simple pleasures is a great place to start.

When you address fears and take the time to reconnect with

your needs and values you can create a new foundation.

With a solid base, we give ourselves the opportunity to live a

life that supports YOU, in the ways that matter.

Who doesn’t want to be happy? Sometimes it is the simplest

things in life that make a huge difference to your every day.

When you find the ‘who’ of you, you can then make a life, that

actually includes you!

The jewels of your life are within you.

Embrace the essence of you and

find your inner guiding compass for

fulfilment!

According to the World Health Organisation’s World Health Statistics Paper, in 2006 Global expenditure on health was about 8.7% of gross domestic product (GDP), with the highest level in the Americas at 12.8% and the lowest in the South-East Asia Region at 3.4%.

This translates to about US$ 716 per capita on the average but there is tremendous variation ranging from a very low US$ 31 per capita in the South-East Asia Region to a high of US$ 2636 per capita in the Americas.

In 2006 the Australian Government expenditure on health was 17% of total government expenditure and 8.7% of total GDP during the reporting period a .4% increase from six years previously.

Did You Know?

Not only are avocado’s delicious they are also very good for you. Here are some facts about this super food.

Avocados are actually a fruit not a vegetable, as many people believe. Also, they are recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most nutritious fruit know to man!

Avos are a great source of vitamin E, which •prolongs the life of red blood cells and helps prevent oxygen damage to cells.

Each avocado only contains 5 grams of fat, and •this fat is monounsaturated or “good” fat, rich in essential fatty acids.

Avocados contain no sodium or cholesterol.•

Some research suggests the humble avo is an •aphrodisiac!

Each and every avocado contains more than 25 •essential vitamins and minerals and they are rich in antioxidants, which neutralise destructive molecules that damage cells leading to ageing and cancer.

So get into your local fruit shop and stock up these little bombs of nutrients this winter. Remember that avocados are best eaten when the flesh is soft and the skin is darker in colour.

Ingredients

2 avocados, finely diced •2 roma tomatoes, finely diced•½ red onion, finely diced •8 fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced•1 tablespoon lemon juice •4 thick slices of Italian bread•1 tablespoon olive oil •fresh black pepper to taste•

MethodIn a small bowl combine the avocados, tomatoes, onion, basil and lemon. Refrigerate for 20 minutes to allow the flavours to develop. Grill or toast the bread. Brush the toast with the olive oil and top with the mixture, season with fresh black pepper.

A study, which was completed last year, has confirmed our worst nightmares… Yes, it is now plain to see that Australia is ranked #1 as the Fattest Nation in the world. There are over 9 million adults classified as obese or overweight in Australia. This equates to nearly 50% of the population!

Research has shown a link between the introduction of agriculture and the increase in our “waist-lines”. This weight gain, especially when concentrated around the waist, puts people at greater risk of suffering with “Metabolic Syndrome” or Syndrome X, as it is more commonly referred to. It is estimated that nearly 20% of Australian adults already have this syndrome. There are considerable health implications linked to this: 5 times more likely to develop Type 2 Diabetes and 2-3 times increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

It is crucial that we take a pro-active approach to ensure we become healthier, thinner and more vibrant individuals. We need to do this for ourselves, our kids and for future generations. This step isn’t always easy to implement so it’s important to let a professional health care practitioner assist and guide you with your weight-loss program. This will ensure a higher rate of success and increased chance of maintaining the weight loss long-term.

At Organic Matters, Ameeta, the resident Naturopathic Practitioner can guide you and provide the latest information and methods of losing those extra kilos and inspire you to continue on this important journey.

Some simple tips to start incorporating into your lifestyle are:

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Australian fertility specialists aim to ease the stress out of making babies by combining their clinic with a five-star luxury resort, complete with a spa and masseurs.

The Cairns Fertility Centre in Western Australia, which will specialise in assisted reproduction and in vitro fertilisa-tion (IVF) procedures, plans to take in patients early next year.

Doug Yek, the centre's financial director, said its location, near the Great Barrier Reef and other attractions, would also help boost medical tourism to the state, a market the specialists said was still in its infancy in Australia.

"Thirty years ago the first IVF baby was born, and since then the technology has improved dramatically, but the way in which a patient goes through the process of a treatment has largely stayed the same," Yek told Reuters.

"We are trying to take it up to the next level by providing services that minimise stress, which can play a big part

in the outcome of the treatment, and hopefully improve their prospects."

The centre is the brainchild of IVF specialist Dr. John Yovich, who runs Western Australia's leading reproduc-tive clinic, the PIVET Medical Centre.

Describing the Cairns clinic as a "one-stop-shop" for conceiving couples looking for a bit of relaxation, Yek said that in addition to the medical facilities, the 12-storey building would include luxury hotel apartments ser-viced by a swimming pool, gym, spa, barbeque area and restaurants.

Beauty therapists and counsellors are also on hand, as well as surgeons for cosmetic procedures.

"This IVF clinic will be the biggest in the world offering complimentary services," Yek said. "Females coming for IVF treatments can also get a nip and tuck."

The centre hopes to attract 50 percent of its patients from

around the world and 50 percent from within Australia.

"IVF is still a very sensitive procedure so patients can say they are going to Cairns on holiday and no one is any wiser," Yek said.

"Confidentiality is the key and what we will provide will give that to patients because it's all in the one building."

The apartments will cost approximately A$ 200 to A$300 ($160-$240) a night, but packages are available for longer stays as most IVF treatment take at least three weeks.

They clog up our landfill, they make water taste funny and they contain hazardous chemicals Canada has now banned in baby products. In Australia, only a third of plastic bottles are recycled, with the rest going to landfill or ending up in the ocean causing problems for marine life. There’s really not much to like about plastic bottles and containers.

Growing awareness of the health risks associated with some chemicals found in plastics has sparked concerns among Australian consumers as to the safety of the plastic used to package food and drink. Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the chemicals found in polycarbonate plastic bottles and containers, has gained notoriety of late with studies linking the chemical to health problems including infertility, impaired brain function and endocrine disruption.

Canada’s move to ban BPA from baby bottles has generated heated debate in Australia and New Zealand, with environmentalists and health experts pressuring regulatory bodies to follow Canada’s example.

Other kinds of plastic bottles and containers can also leech harmful chemicals into food and drink, especially when heated or as they degrade with repeated use. Studies have now linked these chemicals to several types of cancer.

Until health regulations in Australia are changed, plastic bottles and containers will continue to be produced. However, those wishing to avoid BPA and other chemicals that leech from plastic now have a great, safe alternative to plastic bottles.

Cheeki are an Australian owned company that are dedicated to providing Australians with safe, healthy and fun stainless steel bottles. They do not contain any chemical plasticisers, epoxy resins or other nasties that can affect the taste and health of your drinking water. And they’re GREAT for the environment! Reusable, durable and

dishwasher safe, they come in a fantastic range of designs and sizes. Cheeki’s slim design means they fit easily into cup holders and on your bicycle! There is even a sports cap available for your trips to the gym. And filling up with filtered water from home, means your bottle pays for itself in under a week!

Now savvy, health conscious consumers like you have a great solution to the plastic debate. Cheeki bottles are great for the environment, cheaper than buying bottled water, and much better for your health.

How to ground your energy with diet and nutritionOne cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. ~Virginia Woolf, “A Room of One’s Own”

Many of us lead hectic lives and leave little time for the proper preparation and selection of foods. As a result of this we are often missing key nutrients and food combinations that are required to maintain a state of balance. Fast foods are heavily refined, that is, stripped of their nutritional outer layers which serve to lower the glycaemic index (GI) of the food and maintain a greater level of satiety. Skipping meals can also cause one to be ungrounded and lose focus and concentration so it is important to eat small, regular meals to help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Eating seasonal foods is also important as old foods that have been placed in cold storage for prolonged periods of time have lost most of their nutritional value and life force – offering the consumer very little sustenance. One simple way to avoid this is to try to grow as much of our own produce as possible. The act of gardening and reconnecting with nature is in itself very grounding.

Protein is another important component of our diets that is often underestimated and overlooked for its ability to ground us. Most protein sources are meat/animal based, but even vegetarian sources such as legumes also serve this purpose.

Positive body image not always a good thingNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - While a poor body image can be harmful, some women's health may be threatened by an overly positive perception of their shape and size, a study suggests.

In a study of 81 inner-city, mostly minority women, researchers found that while two-thirds of the women were overweight or obese, many seemed to see themselves as thinner.

When shown silhouettes depicting various body types, 70 percent of the women chose a normal-weight or moderately overweight figure as being closest to their own. Only five of the

31 obese women chose a silhouette that correlated with their actual weight and shape. In addition, 20 percent of obese women selected an obese sil-houette as their "ideal" body type, the researchers report in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The findings suggest that many heavy women may be in the dark about their health risks, according to the researchers.

"So the question for doctors then becomes, 'How can we effec-tively treat our overweight and obese patients, when they don't feel they're in harm's way?'" senior researcher Dr. Marisa Rose, of Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, said in a statement from the university.

The findings, from a group of mostly African-American and Hispanic women seen at Temple's family planning clinic, add to evidence that many overweight minority women may see themselves as normal-weight.

The current study, according to Rose, "stresses a need for cultur-ally sensitive education for this population." That means under-standing a woman's lifestyle habits from a social and economic perspective, and giving advice in a way that will be most likely to persuade her to change, she told Reuters Health.

"For example," Rose said, "some inner-city African-American women have a diet heavily based on fried food and/or fast food. This diet is deeply rooted in culture and tradition and may also be economically based. Conventional dietary recommendations to avoid all fried foods are not culturally sensitive and are unlikely to be followed by this patient population."

Asking a woman to add fresh fruits and vegetables, while cutting down on some fried foods, might work better, the researcher noted.

Prior studies, Rose said, have shown that such "culturally sensi-tive messages" can get patients to adopt healthier eating habits.

What Is Stress?

Stress is your body’s response to any kind of challenge - both good and bad. When people feel stressed their bodies react by releasing adrenaline into the blood, giving people more energy and strength. There are different causes of stress, how does stress affect you?

What Causes Stress? Physical stress (fear of something dangerous) to emotional (worry over your family or job – anxiety or guilt), should be identified.

Survival Stress - “fight or flight” - response to danger in all people and animals. When you are afraid that someone or something may physically hurt you, your body naturally responds with a burst of energy so that you will be better able to survive the dangerous situation (fight) or escape it all together (flight). Often pain and physical injury, such as unresolved head injury, will be a major factor.

Internal Stress – Do you worry about things you can do nothing about or worry for no reason at all? People make themselves stressed - worry about things they can’t control or put themselves in situations they know will cause stress, and become addicted to a hurried, tense, lifestyle that results from being under stress. Often guilt from past experiences affects a person adversely. Check the diet for nutritional deficiencies.

Environmental Stress - response to things around you eg. noise, crowding, mobile phones and pressure from work or family. Identify and learn to avoid them or deal with them will help lower your stress level. Often phobias may develop.

Fatigue and Overwork - Builds up over a long time and can take a hard toll on your body. Can be from working too much or too hard at your job(s), school, or home, not knowing how to manage your time well or how to take time out for rest and relaxation. Often hard to avoid because many people feel this is out of their control. So, how Does Stress Affect You? Stress can affect both your body and your mind. People under large amounts of stress can become tired, sick, and unable to concentrate or think clearly. Sometimes, they even suffer mental breakdowns.

You DO have options and at Aspley Wellness Centre in Robinson Road we offer useful therapies for dealing with STRESS. Get your life back on track today. Special offer in June - 20% off the initial consultation. Phone 3862 8818 now!

Ladies and gentlemen of Brisbane will gather their best Bond ball gowns, diamonds and sharp tuxedos to drink martinis “shaken, not stirred” on July 9th for All Brisbane Realty’s themed James Bond birthday Gala.

Hosted by ex‐AFL player Richard Champion, the charity event of the year will see the likes of local sporting stars and celebrities coming armed and dangerous to the Queen’s Arms Cellar Bar, to raise money for the charity organisation Diabetes Australia.

Owner of All Brisbane Realty, Jason Bond, says the gala will be a night of mystery and excitement and guests should expect a Bond event to remember. Bond assures guests will not have a dull mo-ment, with fabulous raffle prizes, Russian Roulette, as well as the chance to bid on exciting golden items.

“This event will be great night of fun and entertainment, all in the name of a very worthy cause. With so much local community sup-port getting behind the event, we are looking forward to this event being a great success and raising some much needed funds for Diabetes Australia.”

Local businesses have generously donated some incredible prizes, including an exclusive Emma Sheldrake painting, signed Olympic sporting memorabilia, a Tia Carrigan designer dress and much more.

After pledging to donate $1000 from each house sold to Diabetes Australia, the dynamic duo Jason and Ann‐Maree Bond have already raised a staggering $12,000 and are looking to reach their target of $40, 000 by end of July, 2009. Tickets to the charity event are $65, with all proceeds going towards Diabetes Australia.

Tickets can be purchased from All Brisbane Realty on (07) 33580999 or [email protected].

Have you ever wanted to achieve a goal? Did a little voice in your head stop you in your tracks? Do you catch yourself saying things like…you’re not good enough, too stupid, not pretty enough? Limiting beliefs can stop you from succeeding. The good news is - you can do something about it!

Like you, I too have had thoughts that have held me back, they still challenge me at times, however by building your awareness and putting a success strategy into place you can overcome limiting thoughts. Better relationships, achieving your career goals and greater peace are right in front of you.

The way you think influences your feelings, your feelings affect your behaviour, behaviour produces results that either move you forward or hold you back, it’s up to you!

Let’s have a look at what may be holding you back.

Consciousness allows room for growth– Without 1) consciousness you cannot hear the negative self-talk that occurs. Thoughts tend to run through our minds skilfully often without detection…start listening to your thoughts and write down what you find, you may be surprised.

Try not to judge your thoughts as good or bad – accept 2) them for what they are, simply ‘thoughts’. Just notice them and write them down.

Remember situations in your past where thoughts 3) stopped you from going after what was important to you. Looking back, what kind of beliefs stopped you reaching your goals?

If past beliefs have stopped you and have not been 4) addressed, there is a good chance they are standing in

your way today. What is happening in your life today, is there something you are having difficulty progressing with? Have you faced your fears? Are you still sabotaging the success you deserve? Are you waiting for courage or confidence to appear?

Now that you have some limiting beliefs on paper I 5) recommend brainstorming some ways you can overcome these beliefs, e.g. new attitude or perspective, positive action or tasks to break the cycle, ask for support, find a mentor or coach to support you.

You may have a thought such as - I can’t do this! It’s too hard and it mustn’t be for me, versus a more optimistic and encouraging thought - I am passionate and focused and am able to work through obstacles and challenges. I am confident in my goal and I am learning from this experience.

Once limiting thoughts are identified, you can challenge them each time they pop up, the sooner you notice them the sooner they lose their power. By eradicate your limiting beliefs you make room to succeed where you’ve not been able to before.

Understand what’s important to you and what you value, create your goals, and create a success strategy to face your inner demons.

Multivitamins best

for preventing low

birth weight

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - If every pregnant woman world-wide took vitamin and mineral supplements, there would be 1.5 million fewer babies born at low birth weights every year, a new analysis of the medical literature shows.

Women should start taking vitamin and mineral supplements "as soon as they know they are pregnant," Dr. Prakesh S. Shah of the Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, the lead researcher on the study, told Reuters Health. He noted that about 70 percent to 80 percent of women in the U.S. and Canada use prenatal supplements.

Currently, the World Health Organization recommends supplementation with folic acid and iron during pregnancy, Shah and his team note in CMAJ. But subsequent research has suggested that other nutrients may also be important for preventing low birth weight and premature birth.

To see if multimicronutrient supplements might benefit ba-bies more than iron and folic acid supplements alone, Shah and his colleagues reviewed 13 published trials conducted in Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. The number of mi-cronutrients women received in the various studies ranged from 8 to 28.

Compared with women who took a placebo, women who took multimicronutrients were 19 percent less likely to have a low birth weight baby. When compared with women tak-ing iron and folic acid only, the researchers found the multi-micronutrient users had a 17 percent lower risk of having a low birth weight baby.

Babies born to women taking multimicronutrient supple-ments weighed 54 grams (about two ounces) more, on aver-age, than babies born to women taking iron and folic acid alone.

However, multimicronutrient supplements didn't appear to

affect the risk of preterm birth or infants who were "small-for-gestational-age."

In an interview, Shah said that certain nutrients, in certain amounts, stood out as being the most important: vitamin A (2,640 IU), vitamin D (200 IU), vitamin E (10 milligrams), vita-min B1 (1.4 milligrams), folic acid (400 micrograms), vitamin C (70 milligrams), zinc (15 milligrams) and iron (30 milligrams).

Low birth weight infants -- those born weighing less than 2.5 kilograms (about 5.5 pounds) --face a greater risk of health problems that extends into adulthood, Shah said. For exam-ple, they are more vulnerable to infections as infants, more likely to have developmental problems in childhood, and at greater risk of diabetes and high blood pressure as adults.

Giving pregnant women these vitamins and minerals most likely prevents babies from gaining too little weight by im-proving their nutrition, strengthening a woman's immune system, and reducing fetal growth restriction, Shah said.

Shah said the WHO should revisit its guidelines to recom-mend multimicronutrients, not just iron and folic acid, for all pregnant women. "It is important that we implement this change."

In an editorial accompanying the study, Drs. Zulfiqar A. Bhutta and Batool Azra Haider of The Aga Khan University in Karachi, Pakistan, say "maternal undernutrition is one of the most neglected aspects of nutrition in public health glob-ally," and note that a recent study found up to 19 percent of reproductive age women worldwide may be "seriously undernourished."

If studies bear out the findings of Shah and his team, they agree that "multimicronutrient supplementation should re-place iron-folic acid supplementation in susceptible popula-tions." SOURCE: CMAJ, June 9, 2009.

Whenever I go into someone’s house to help them declutter, I am

forever being told that they aren’t really sure if it is clutter or should be kept, so it just gets kept. Here are a few rules to help you decide whether it should be kept or thrown out:

1. If I haven’t used it within the last year or probably never will – it’s clutter2. If it’s broken and has been broken for the last year, I have no intention of ever fixing it or using it – so it’s clutter.3. If it doesn’t fit me, and hasn’t fit me for a year - it’s clutter.4. If it’s valuable or an heirloom, and I want to keep it for my children, I’ll keep it. If I have no intention of having children I will give it to the next closest relative.5. If it’s a gift I am hanging on to because it was a gift, not because I like it or use it – it’s clutter.6. If I have 25 sets of the same thing – it’s clutter.7. If it’s past its use by date – it’s clutter.

I hope that helps clarify things for you.

5 Mins With..... Tia Carrigan

What is your earliest fashion memory?

Having my mum make gorgeous printed swing dresses and frilly swimsuits for my sister and I when we were about 4 years old!

What inspires you and motivates you as a designer?

I am inspired by people who follow their own path, by innovation and originality in all forms, and I am drawn to vibrant colour and prints. I love using unusual, bizarre inspirations for my collections and incorporating these themes into versatile, comfortable and unique clothing for women of all types.

Who is your biggest style icon?

I take inspiration from women who confidently dress for self expression rather than to follow trends, and those women who understand their body shape and have developed their style based on what suits them individually. So my style icons range from a lady in her sixties who lives close to me who has an immaculate, classic retro style to that of celebrity Beyonce Knowles who style is always very polished and ladylike and dresses to show of her fabulous figure.

Who are your favourite designers?

Diane von Frustenburg, Emilio Pucci, Madeleine Vionnet and wallpaper designer Florence Broadhurst.

Describe your label in five words..

unique, fluid, versatile, comfortable, vibrant

How did you first get into designing?

I’ve always been a creative person and I’ve been painting ever since I can remember. I used to paint anything I could get my hands on and I think my designing is just a more refined outlet for these creative tendencies!

Has it been hard to break into the Brisbane fashion market?

Brisbane has been great to get a start in because of that community support. Brisbane networking is great because everyone knows someone who is willing to help you!

Your label has been described as incredibly versatile and you are known for your use of quality fabrics and

cuts. How important are these two elements when designing new collections?

These elements are the underpinning qualities that I use as a base for each design I create. I strongly believe in designing clothing for women of all shapes and sizes and clothing that is comfortable as well as unique. So cut and fabric choices are the foundations for my designs, I just add colour, print and a creative theme.

What inspired the title “Insections” for your new spring/Summer collection?

My spring summer collection is based on the strong shapes, forms and colours which beetles and insects possess. Subsequently, my designs grew from mixing their angular body segments and sections with the lightness and fluidity of their wings. Therefore, ‘Insections’ is a play on the word ‘insect’ and the strong influence of insect body segments and ‘sections’.

What do you think fashionable women will be wearing this summer?

I think women will be wearing clothing that will carry them through their busy lifestyles in a cool, comfortable and stylish manner. My Spring/Summer range offers women the versatility of dresses and separates which will take them from a business meeting, to playing with the kids in the backyard, to a cocktail party with friends.

Where to next for Tia Carrigan designs?

I am actively looking to extend my stockist base to give customers the opportunity to suss out my collections, wherever they may live!

tiacarrigan is the self-titled label from emerging Queensland fashion designer, Tia Carrigan. Tia breathes innovativeness and beautiful fabrics into all her designs, drawing on her rural life as the inspiration to her passion and creativity. This is Tia Carrigan’s 3rd stellar and debut national collection, ‘Insection’.

By Julian DaSilvaWinter is the time that most of us feel the urge to bunker down at home, often at the expense of our fitness levels. With the cooler weather and shorter, darker days, the last thing on our mind is to go for a walk or jog around the neighborhood. This often results in most of us putting on the few extra Winter kilos that we try desperately to lose when Spring and Summer return. But there is a solution!

Cardiovascular exercise, or just “cardio”, involves the larger muscles like your legs, and help make your heart and lungs stronger. Cardio has lots of health benefits like lowering your blood pressure, and it can also burn lots of calories – great for those of you who want to lose or maintain your weight!

The easiest, natural form of cardio exercise is walking, running or cycling. You can do this in the comfort of your home using fitness equipment such as a treadmill, elliptical cross-trainer or exercise bike.

There are many features and specifications to look for when buying fitness equipment, but the most important is Heart Rate Training.

Most treadmills, elliptical cross-trainers and exercise bikes

incorporate Heart Rate Training programs that allow the computer built into the fitness equipment to adjust the speed or resistance automatically based on your heart rate. This is the easiest, yet most effective form of training to lose weight, especially when you reach 70% or more of your maximum heart rate. This is smart fitness and it only gets better!

The Aquila T350 treadmill from Fitness Market has a smart computer that incorporates heart rate training along with 17 additional programs. This not only ensures you get the most effective exercise, but also keeps you interested with a variety of routines.

Overall, cardio exercise and heart rate training improves your fitness, and can help you lose weight given the right heart rate training!

Fitness Market has a large range of treadmills, elliptical and exercise bikes to help maintain your fitness this Winter and all year round. Speak to the friendly consultants at Fitness Market for a free demonstration on effective heart rate training. (see page 2 for special deals)

If stress is affecting your health, there are some excellent strategies you can use to help you manage your stress levels and improve your health and vitality. Our nervous system and our adrenal glands are the main parts of our body responsible for helping us cope with stress and keeping us healthy during stressful periods. There are a number of natural vitamins, minerals and herbs that can help our nervous system and adrenal glands work more effectively.

Nutrients to help manage stress – B vitamins, especially vitamins B5 and B6, vitamin C and magnesium which work to produce antistress hormones, keep us relaxed and comfortable.

Herbs for anxiety – Kava, Magnolia, Zizyphus, Passion Flower, Lavender and Oats. These herbs all have a long history of being used to relax the body and calm the mind as well as helping to improve sleep.

Herbs for stress-related exhaustion – If stress has been going on for a long time it can leave your nervous system and adrenal glands feeling depleted. This can make you feel exhausted and run down. To boost your energy levels, herbs such as Withania, Siberian Ginseng, Korean Ginseng and Rehmannia have been shown to improve energy, mood and concentration, helping you to get back feeling great again!

For assistance in choosing the herbs that best suit you, talk to your Practitioner.

STRATEGIES FOR COPING WITH STRESS

Vegeout is the brainchild of Jennie and David Brosnan. In this busy world, Jennie and David thought of a way to bring fresh fruit and vegetables into people’s homes. Shopping at home or work in a time that is convenient to you, allows you to hand select the fruit, vegetables and deli items that your family can delight over in the coming days.

David and Jennie come from an extensive food background. Both are qualified chefs, starting out their careers learning at the hands of Brisbane master chefs. Their love of food continued as they started a family and realised the vital importance of quality and freshness protecting the health of their daughters.

David started working at the Brisbane Markets in 1991 where he learnt how to source quality produce from growers and completed his Quality Assurance qualifications. Their dream of opening a quality Fruit and Vegetable shop was realised in 2006, opening a store in Ferny Grove which is now the home of great service and quality for their local customers; awarded as a Finalist in the 2008 Retailer of the Year by Fresh Tastes – an arm of the Brisbane Markets.

Vegeout can now bring that great service to your home or office. Online orders placed before 7am can be delivered to most areas of Brisbane, with deliveries also available in the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba regions.

Quality and Freshness is guaranteed with Vegeout. David and Jennie would love the opportunity to save you time and bring their great tasting products into your home ready to serve up to your family & friends.

There are many reasons that we suffer from low energy, including overwork, lack of sleep, boredom, stress, depression, anemia (which decreases your cells’ supply of oxygen), nutrient deficiencies, chronic infection and disease. I want to tell you about two other energy sappers because while they are very common, they are also often overlooked.

I can bet you that one in every three people you know who complains of fatigue has worn-out adrenals.

Sitting just above our kidneys, our little powerhouse adrenal glands release the hormones that enable us to sail through daily stresses and cope with traumas. These hormones - including cortisol, DHEA, adrenalin, testosterone and estrogen – help us manage the stresses of difficult situations, work deadlines, illness, exercising a little harder, responding to emergencies, or getting the kids to school on time. Adrenal hormones also regulate tissue repair and cellular activity to give us lots of energy.

If you don’t take care of your adrenals, they can soon become exhausted and unable to maintain healthy hormone levels, a condition known as adrenal fatigue or adrenal exhaustion.

Some of my patients came to me after doctors had dismissed their strange collection of symptoms as “all in the head”, and a few had even been prescribed a n t i - d e p r e s s a n t s or sedatives to help them cope with their ‘psychological’ problems.

But if your adrenals

are exhausted, the constant feeling of unwellness, physical weakness and profound fatigue, often accompanied by pain in your joints and muscles, can make every day an ordeal. Out-of-balance hormones can leave you overweight, depressed, anxious, and with dangerously low immunity. If not treated, adrenal fatigue can lead to other diseases, including hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid).

Yet it’s not so hard to keep your adrenals healthy. It’s just a matter of adopting a more balanced, healthier lifestyle: eating wholesome foods, avoiding junk foods and stimulants like coffee and energy drinks, getting adequate rest and reducing the stress in your life.

As you can see, the key to boundless energy is good health and a healthy, natural lifestyle. You don’t need a shelf full of energy-boosting supplements to have all the energy you want, though supplements certainly can play a role. Nor are high energy levels only for the young. It is never too late to

achieve wellbeing, health and vitality.

How to Care for Your GutThe first step is detoxification to clear out all the

•accumulated glug. Detoxification flushes out the toxins, biochemical wastes and undigested food that accumulate in your gut. For simple, practical detox guidelines, plus lots of delicious cleansing recipes, see my book, ‘The Complete Detox Guide in 7 Days and Beyond’.

Eat lots of raw foods: fruits and vegetables, nuts and

•seeds. If your system is very sensitive right now, you might find raw vegetable juices easier to cope with at first. Carrot, lettuce, cabbage and cucumber are particularly soothing and can help reduce inflammation and elimination. Do not mix vegetable and fruit juices for now, otherwise you can get bloating.

Avoid the foods that promote

•fermentation (sugary, yeasty foods, junk foods and bread).

Avoid milk, milk products and meat

•until your gut problems have been resolved, and limit them thereafter. You can get adequate calcium and good protein from raw almonds, dark green leafy vegetables, sardines, turnips, radishes, carrots, carrot juice, tofu, fish and eggs. To improve your calcium absorption, spend 10 minutes a day in sunshine, and avoid coffee, sweets and soft drinks.

Drink plenty of fresh water (filtered

•to get out chlorine and fluoride).

Get a moderate amount •

of daily exercise to massage your digestive organs and help flush out wastes and toxins faster.

Take a flaxseed oil •supplement to help reduce inflammation and strengthen your gut tissues.

How to Care for Your Adrenals

Eat lots of raw vegetables, nuts, fish, tofu, and more

•low GI carbs, and avoid processed or junk foods

Eat small frequent meals (3 small meals a day plus

•healthy snacks such as a handful of nuts and raisins,

fresh fruit with yogurt, a smoothie, hummus on rice

crackers etc)

Get at least 8 hours of sleep a night, or 9 if you need

•more (many people do)

Take Asian ginseng to improve adrenal function and

•aid with stress management

Practice meditation, deep relaxation, Tai Chi or Qi

•Gong daily to energize the body, balance your

energies, and release accumulated stress

Take daily supplements to maintain optimal levels

•of adrenal-supporting nutrients. Most people do

not get enough Vitamin C, and many are low in B

vitamins such as Vitamin B5 and B6

Balanced Magazine City Edition July 2009 Pg 16

Brisbane based kitchen and homewares company Dreamfarm has recently launched its new range of 2009 products worldwide. Dreamfarm sets out to challenge everyone that believes everything has already been invented and leave them wondering how they ever lived without their unique products!

In a bid to bring new thinking to everyday problems, the new Dreamfarm range of products consists of four exciting new inventions that provide solutions to kitchen and household challenges. The 2009 product line includes:

Vebo- the unit that boils, steams and strains your vegetables all in one

Oni- the all in one knife with a razor sharp blade on one side, a brilliant spreader on the other, and a clever plastic wrap cutter build into the handle

Spink - the clever spill saver with a shock-resistant shell and lever powered suction cup to ensures a drink is never spilled again and

Jot - the device which will conveniently hang, hold or hook just about anything once you’ve found the perfect place for it.

The master mind behind the collection, Dreamfarm Managing Director, Alex Gransbury, said the new range is consistent with the company’s vision of extending beyond simply recreating products already on the market, to offer clever inventions that are truly useful and unique.

“A lot of companies seem to be producing similar products to each other or putting a handle variation on an existing tool and we completely understand why- it costs less and there’s a lot less risk than coming up with something totally new,” Mr Gransbury said.

“But at Dreamfarm we don’t rehash old ideas; we believe that impossible only means the solution is yet to be found and as designers we are constantly looking for a new challenge- it’s why we get out of bed in the morning,” he continued.

“Take the Dreamfarm Smood for instance – we created this as an alternative to the traditional potato masher which either crushes your potato instead of mashing it or requires the pounding action to be repeated dozens of times. Smood creates smooth mash in seconds and it is the perfect example of the way Dreamfarm will look at a traditional product that

hasn’t changed for years, and come up with a completely out-of-the-box solution.”

“Smood traps your potato in its spring and as you press down the potato is forced through the gaps in the collapsing coils, creating smooth, creamy mashed potato in a matter of seconds,” Mr Gransbury said.

Smood is also brilliant for mashing avocados into guacamole and makes light work of preparing fresh baby food.

The four new Dreamfarm products for 2009 mark the beginning of the company’s green commitment to use reusable displays, produce less waste, and plant a tree for every unit sold.

The Dreamfarm range of products is stocked throughout the world including Australia, the United States, Europe and New Zealand. The complete range of products, including the last year’s highly popular 2008 range, are also available to purchase online at www.dreamfarm.com.au.

For more information and for details on stockists in Queensland visit www.dreamfarm.com.au or phone 07 3369 0074.

Dreamfarm’s groundbreaking masher, Smood, utilises a stainless steel spring coil that traps food and forces it through the thin gaps between each coil as the spring collapses. This unique design eliminates jarring on the wrist and guarantees smooth, fluffy mashed food with the convenience of a silicone scraper to clean the pot or bowl. Smood is heat resistant to 260 degrees Celsius and is dishwasher safe. Available in two colours.

Jot is a convenient hanging, holding or hooking device. The unique, long lasting suction hook comes in a fantastic mix of ten colours and can be stuck to any smooth, flat surface. Jot will hold pens on the cash register or fridge, tea towels on your splash back, keys by the front door or even your toothbrush on the bathroom mirror. Once you find that perfect place for something, Jot just holds it there.

NO MISSION IMPOSSIBLE FOR DREAMFARM IN THE KITCHEN

Grindenstein - bang grinds in steinSmood smooth mash in seconds

Jot – just holds it there

For everyone who makes espresso coffee, Dream-farm’s Grindenstein removes used grinds from an espresso machine’s portafilter in one simple movement, just tap the portafilter over Grinden-stein’s dump bar. Its patented, unbreakable design and compact height allows for convenient storage on an espresso machine drip tray and is top rack dishwasher safe. In keeping with the company’s commitment to the environment, Grindenstein comes equipped with an information booklet filled with great ideas on how to recycle the collected coffee grinds into a fantastic natural fertiliser. Avail-able in three colours

RRP $29.95 Oni - only need one knife

Vebo – vegetable boil steam strain

Spink – never spill another drink

Oni has combined everyday kitchen tools into one convenient knife by providing a razor sharp chef’s blade on one side, a brilliant spreader on the other, and a clever plastic wrap cutter built into the handle. The knife’s unique spreader tip easily pierces food packaging and allows scrapping of plastic containers without scratching and it will not tear bread when spreading like other knives do. German stainless steel blade with hollow grounds creates air pockets to easily cut foods such as tomato and cheese without sticking to the knife.

Vebo is an innovative time and space saver allowing boiling, steaming and straining of vegetables to occur in one, easy to handle unit that can serve straight to your plate. The unique wall design squashes down to fit any sized pot, keeping the lid on tightly to lock in heat and steam, cutting cooking time. Vebo is made from premium grade silicone, heat-resistant up to 260 degrees and is dishwasher safe.

Spink ensures a drink is never spilled again by simply sticking securely to a table and holding a drink in its shock-resistant shell and lever-powered suction cup. This clever invention comes with a clear sleeve allowing you to slip in your own cover design or photos to make it as individual and unique as its owner. The handle and finger grooves allow for easy gripping of cups and mugs and Spink’s innovative design fits drinks of all sizes, from a can of coke to a takeaway coffee cup or mug.

Antioxidants are vital in our diet to protect our bodies against the damaging effects of an excess of substances called “free radicals”. Everyone produces free radicals in the process of creating energy, which is quite natural. However, excess may be produced by various factors, such as stress, tobacco smoking, pollution, sunlight, radiation, illness and so on. These surplus free radicals may cause cell damage and this may predispose to cancer and other illnesses, and it is thought to be how the ageing process takes place.

Free radicals can also oxidise polyunsaturated fats in the body which can cause further damage. The oxidation of LDL cholesterol may be a factor in the build-up of plaque in the arteries, a factor in cardiovascular heart disease. The antioxidants present in our diet helps to neutralise the free radicals in our body and stop them producing their damaging effect.

Açaí, or more commonly known as The Purple Berry, has been found to contain a remarkable concentration of antioxidants. In fact, research conducted by a leading laboratory in the USA, Brunswick Laboratories, that specialises in measuring the antioxidant activity of different foods, found Açaí to contain an antioxidant capacity that is

superior to all other fruits.

Tests have shown that many fruit owe their high levels of antioxidant capacity to a group of phytochemicals, or more specifically, flavonoids, present in high concentrations in Açai called anthocyanins.

Anthocyanins are pigments responsible for the bright colours that occur in flower petals, fruits and vegetables, especially those with a deep red-blue-purple colour. It is this pigment that causes the deep purple colour of Açai. It is also what causes the red colour of red wine, another rich source of anthocyanins, which is thought to contribute to the French paradox, i.e. France has one of the lowest incidences of heart disease of any westernized

society despite a prevalence of smoking and a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol.

It has been suggested that this is due to the quantity of red wine that the French consume with their meals, that acts to counteract the harmful effect though the action of the antioxidants contained within the red wine. Interestingly, Açaí is known to possess around 30 times more anthocyanins than red wine.

ACAI - IS THIS LITTLE PURPLE BERRY THE MOTHER OF ALL FRUIT

Acai is know to possess around 30 times more

antioxidents than red wine

The Average person falls asleep in around 12 -14 minutes.

It takes about three hours for food to be broken down in the human stomach.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children who are overweight tend to eat a relatively large share of their calories later in the day, a new study suggests.

Some studies of adults have found connections between body weight and eating late in the day; people who eat late in the day tend to eat more calories overall, while those who prefer a big breakfast tend to eat fewer calories throughout the day.

In the new study, of more than 11,000 U.S. children and teenagers, researchers found that compared with their healthy-weight peers, overweight 6- to 11-year-olds gener-ally ate a larger share of their daily calories after 4 p.m.

The reverse was true among teenagers, however -- with overweight teens eating a relatively smaller share of their calories after 4 p.m., according to findings published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.

Based on the data, it seemed that teenagers who ate a rela-tively large amount of calories late in the day compensated for it by eating less at other times, explained researcher Dr. Sibylle Kranz, of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

It is not clear whether eating late causes school-age chil-dren to become overweight teenagers and adults, Kranz told Reuters Health. The study data, taken from a govern-ment health and nutrition survey, were collected at a single

point in time.

Long-term studies are needed to gain a better understand-ing of how the timing of meals and snacks affects children's weight, according to Kranz and her colleagues.

Adults who want to shed pounds, or avoid gaining any, of-ten hear advice to avoid eating after 7 or 8 p.m. But overall calorie intake, experts say, is the main concern. If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight, regard-less of when those calories are consumed.

Similarly, the quality of a child's diet and total calorie intake -- along with physical activity -- are most important to pre-venting childhood obesity, Kranz noted.

She recommends that parents help their children learn healthy habits and eat more "nutrient-dense" foods -- like fruits, vegetables, beans and high-fiber grains -- that are relatively low in calories but high in nutrients.

The timing of meals and snacks can enter into this, accord-ing to Kranz. She pointed out that the foods people eat late in the day are often nutritionally dubious snack items. What's more, she said, the circumstances of evening eating -- frequently in front of the TV -- may cause people to eat more than they need to satisfy their hunger.

Queensland’s first mother-baby hub is a unique combination of services designed for those that want to become pregnant, mothers-to-be, parents and their children. Its focus is on post-natal care arrangements to support parents in that critical period between the birth of their child and their first programmed medical check-up at 6-weeks.

Director, Chrissie Norton, herself a mother of three and currently expecting her fourth baby in June, reflects that “On leaving hospital, parents are often left unsupported. The hub was specifically established to provide care and assistance to those parents feeling overwhelmed and isolated with the challenges of a new baby.”

The Mother-Baby Hub hosts doctors and allied health professionals, all with expertise in the areas of maternal and paediatric health. It offers a range of support services including one-on-one consultations with a midwife or lactation consultant to resolve feeding or settling difficulties, counselling and considerate psychological support, the opportunity to join mothers’ groups as well as many other social settings for mothers and children to interact.

To relieve some stress on mothers, the hub has beauty therapists and hair-dressers on-site to pamper and relax those feeling the pressures of parenthood.

Child-minding by qualified carers puts mother’s minds at ease and allows them to have a short break from parenting duties to relax and sample the Hub’s coffee.

The Mother-Baby Hub is having an OPEN DAY on 27 June from 11am to 2pm, where families from the area are welcome to join the hub team for a FREE sausage sizzle, face-painting and jumping castle. Make sure you come to see how the hub

can support you.

The hub is located at 429 Gympie Rd Strathpine, behind Southern X-Ray.

Banish the norm of wearing black this winter by wearing red on Friday 12th June, to support the Heart Foundations Go Red for Women campaign.

Go Red for Women unites Australian women in the fight against Heart disease, the number one killer of Australian women, while raising vital funds for education and research into women and heart disease.

The Heart Foundation invites Brisbane to celebrate Go Red for Women day on June 12 by attending the ‘Love Your Heart’ Networking breakfast at Gianni’s Portside at 7am.

Guests will be treated to a delicious healthy breakfast (prepared according to the Heart Foundations nutritional guidelines), hear inspirational stories from a panel of real women, lead by MC & 4BC Radio Personality, Alex Bernard, and have the chance to win exciting prizes including a limited edition, handcrafted necklace by Sunshine-Coast based designer, Heather Saxon.

Guests will also be shown how to satisfy their love for food without sacrifice their health or waistline, with a cooking demonstration from local celebrity chef, Dominique Rizzo, who has regularly appeared on Ready Steady Cook.

Heart Foundation Programs & Events Manager, Ms Belinda Carroll, said she encouraged everyone to dress in red on the 12th June.

“A Staggering 78% of women are unaware that heart disease is their number one killer,” Ms Carroll said

“There are many myths about heart disease – such as the perception that it’s an old man’s disease. This is not the case – heart disease tragically takes the lives of 30 Australian women every day.”

“We have some fantastic supports, such as Lorna Jane, but the real power is in the numbers, so I encourage everyone to help us turn Brisbane Red on Go Red for Women day.”

The Go Red for Women breakfast is available to both male & female guests. Tickets to the breakfast are $85 or $800 for a table of ten, and are available by visiting www.goredforwomen.com.au/qld and downloading the order form, or phoning 3872 2503

The Australian Government has released details of its $4 billion Energy Efficient Homes Package. The package, which will install ceiling insulation into 2.9 million homes will help millions of Australian’s reduce their energy use, create much needed jobs and cut power bills in these homes by $200 - $700 per year, making this program great news for the economy and the environment. Local company, Select Building Services, who specialise in installing ceiling insulation recommend all homeowners who do not currently have insulation take advantage of this incentive program.

The assistance is specifically targeted at the 40 percent of Australian homes currently estimated to not have insulation. For most households, insulation is the simplest and most effective way to make a house more energy efficient, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Nick Bond from Select Building Services says, “A home with no insulation is wasting energy and money. A quality insulation product like Bradford Gold will stop heat penetrating your home in summer and prevent valuable heat escaping in winter”.

Creating jobs in the midst of an economic downturn can of course be applauded but the underlying environmental and health benefits of this program cannot be ignored. Insulating these households will drastically reduce their carbon footprint, cutting energy waste. Insulation

also reduces c o n d e n s a t i o n on walls and ceilings leading to improved health for the residents of these homes, especially children. Nick added, “Our product is the only accepted insulation partner of the National Asthma Council of Australia and it’s produced from up to 80% recycled glass helping to save energy in its

manufacture and to reduce landfill”

The Homeowner Insulation Program runs from 1 July 2009 until 31 December 2011 and as the average cost of insulating a home is $1,200 not too many households will be out of pocket after the $1,600 rebate. Call Select Building Systems today on 33001811 for a FREE quote and to check your eligibility for the scheme.

Sometime after the 7th your connection with an older wiser and more experienced person will be of great value in helping you see things as they really are. You will be able to confide in this person, especially if you find yourself stuck in a rut in some relationship or long-term relationship. Don’t be afraid to open your heart in trust just now. It will offer you solutions you never expected.

Your confidence is extremely high after the 23rd when the Sun returns to your sign of Leo. This is the commencement of a new yearly solar cycle so make the most of it. Get out your best outfit and spend money beautifying yourself to make a lasting impression. If you’re on the prowl for love your energy is perfectly suited to attracting a perfect mate during this period. Venus makes you particularly charming.

Sometime between the 22nd and the 25th, friendships are likely to start changing. This will be a spring cleaning of sorts – a time when the old saying, “Out with the old and in with the new”, will seem very appropriate to you. Naturally, you may feel a little saddened that you’ll have to move forward alone but it is for the best, and the moment you do so, you’ll create a brand new space around you which attracts a whole new range of characters into your life.

Venus promises you fantastic responses in any job interviews you may go for. Favorable planetary circumstances abound between the 13th and the 20th so you should make yourself available and don’t be afraid to make yourself look a little more presentable than normal. A new hair color or pair of shoes contribute to your success and make a great impact on your interviewer.

Please try to avoid gossip and hearsay this month especially between the 13th and the 18th. You’ll hear secrets, innuendos and other malicious rumors which you mustn’t buy into. Apart from the social implications of this, however, it could also draw your mind to entertainment associated with conspiracy theories, politics and unexplained mysteries. This could be a link that draws you closer to a friend or group of people who are also developing similar interests.

You need to back track over old ground with a parent this month. After the 17th, you may realize that you’ve inadvertently ignored or overlooked important components of a discussion with either your mother or father. You may have wondered why you’ve been given the hairy eyeball treatment, if you know what I mean. Attention to detail is necessary not just in the tactical affairs of finance, work and your daily routine, but also to the emotional affairs of the heart. Family comes first this month, don’t forget that.

The proximity of Saturn to Mars is a big challenge this month and warns that you need adequate, constructive outlets to channel the frustrating influence of Saturn which may be still lingering from the last month. Anger and other debilitating emotional states are likely and need to be monitored and dealt with promptly. Between the 12th and the 15th, cushion the impact by spending time alone.

The solar eclipse which occurs on the 11th has deep and lasting ramifications for your professional life. Remember that with the power you achieve now, additional responsibilities will also need to be shouldered so try to educate yourself and associate with others who are prepared to deal with you on a professional level as well. Your successes now could cause others to take a swipe at you and this may be done in a very covert way. Hold your head up and don’t be drawn into petty arguments.

You will make decisions that affect the stability of your life between the 21st and the 24th. You could be bored with your usual group of friends and may opt for something a little more bizarre or out of the ordinary. This could lead you to discover new things about yourself, the others and the world in general. But by the same token, may also cause you to err. Accept the trusted advice of a friend in these matters, and don’t do things that you’ll regret later.

A turn of events in your professional life around the 23rd is likely to make you feel nervous about your future prospects. Don’t listen to rumors on the grapevine. Downsizing in your company or your place of work could set off alarm bells but don’t be premature. Look at this as a way of providence granting you the variety you are looking for in your career. It will probably be a lot more fun that you first imagined once you receive the news of some big change. You must go with the flow.

Professional contacts you make this month will certainly be worthwhile. And you’ve got charming Venus to thank for this. Whilst she is influencing your career zone most formidably, others will find you appealing and will want to help you in every respect. Between the 5th and the 9th you can expect a few new opportunities to open up before you and this will excite you and give you renewed confidence in your abilities and your future professional path.

The shift focuses from your personal relationships to your financial commitments after the 21st. You could probably welcome a distortion in perception about the way things are but that would only continue to keep you attached to the slave maze to which many are now addicted. What do I mean by this? Well, most people find it easy to just follow the crowd, to confuse themselves with jargon, vain hopes and promises without really investigating things for themselves.

If you are anything like me the thought of updating your home is always prevalent, however gallivanting across town looking at dozens of interiors for design ideas, takes the fun away from it for most of us.

Luckily this week one of Brisbane’s leading interior space creators, Helen Glover of HG Unique Spaces, has launched her innovative online store.

Which means, for the first time home decorating connoisseurs can steal a glimpse into Helen’s gift of interior spaces creativity, experience the delicacy in her eclectic designs, and discover the latest the industry has to offer both in Australia and overseas.

Visiting the site you will immediately appreciate the intricacies of a truly innovative website designed to be an artwork in itself, as well as how it showcases Helen’s character as an industry leader providing the most exceptional and convenient service to her clients.

According to Ms Glover, the online store features a range of unique and handpicked home furnishings and gifts to suit all feminine tastes. “House-proud Australians can browse through a quality selection of indoor and outdoor homewares; fabric, from heavy upholstery through to simple sheers; and the latest selection of wallpapers from around the world, including Florence Broadhurst’s most exquisite ranges,” Ms Glover said.

Ms Glover said that people who either were not able to visit her showroom due to distance or time constraints were able to find the perfect wallpaper and fabrics to compliment their interior ambience, as well as unique pieces to highlight their selection.

Ms Glover also offers expert individual advice and installation assistance to those in the Greater Brisbane area. In addition, the online store carries a frequently updated collection of unique pieces, lingerie, specialty soaps, candles and decorative pieces.

Ms Glover said that creating an online store had always been a goal she was passionate about achieving with showrooms in Samford and the boutique store in Ascot proving to be immensely popular with locals who are looking for inspiration for their homes and living spaces,” she said.

Just like the showroom and Ascot boutique store, Ms Glover has created a website which can be described as an inspiring space that promises a visit full of surprises, just waiting to be explored.

The online store is available at www.hguniquespaces.com.au

Brains or beauty? Women still conflictedLOS ANGELES (Reuters Life!) - Smart or thin? Rich or ugly?

Women still have a complex and contradictory relationship with their own image according to a poll released on Tues-day that found 25 percent of those questioned would rather win the "America's Next Top Model" TV show than the Nobel Peace Prize.

And although 75 percent of women surveyed said they'd be willing to shave their heads to save the life of a stranger, more than a quarter of those taking part admitted they would make their best friend fat for life, if it meant they could be thin.

As for that age-old dilemma of whether to marry for wealth or looks, half of the 18- to 24-year-olds questioned said they would marry an ugly man if he were a multimillionaire.

The poll for U.S. television network Oxygen, which is tar-geted at young women, also found that 88 percent of 18- to 34-year-old women would happily give up their cell phone, jewelry and makeup to keep a friendship.

"This survey proves an interesting dissection of today's wom-an and how she relates her personal image with what she values in her life," said Dr. Jenn Berman, psychotherapist and judge of the upcoming new Oxygen series "Pretty Wicked."

"As shown in several results, women today are a complex combination of altruistic and materialistic, vain and insecure, loyal and self-serving. This survey highlights the dichotomy in all of us," Berman said.

More than 2,000 women aged 18-34 were interviewed for

the poll.

Dry skin isn’t the only victim of the cooler months; hair often feels the full brunt of winds and heaters. Once hair dries out it becomes dull and lifeless; to stop this occurring apply a simple hair treatment once a week. Home-made va-rieties are always great; hair masks can include things like; natural yogurt, avocado, ba-nana and olive oil. Feel free to mix ingredients together and apply by massaging into the scalp. Leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes and wash out with your regular shampoo and conditioner.

Mineral makeup is a phenomenon that is tak-ing the beauty world by storm. While there is no disputing the wonders of mineral makeup, however some tips and tricks will perfect the look feel and effects of the makeup. To start with always ensure that moisturiser is fully absorbed before applying mineral makeup as skin should be clean and dry. Always buff the power particles with the brush on the this skin in a round circular motion in light layers. Slowly build up colour and coverage. To finish off the look and ensure the makeup lasts for hours ap-ply a mineral veil lightly all over the face. Try id Bare Minerals Makeup starting from $75.
