What’s included in this release The ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack includes the instrument drivers, firmware, and utility applications necessary to support the ACQUITY Arc system.

System components and features

The core ACQUITY Arc system consists of the following components and features.

System components and features:

Component or Feature Description

Quaternary Solvent Manager-R (QSM-R)

The QSM-R allows you to mix and degas as many as four mobile phases. The flow rate range is 0.001 to 5.000 mL/min. The maximum pressure is 65,500 kPa (655 bar, 9,500 psi).

Sample Manager Flow Through Needle-R (SM FTN-R)

The SM FTN-R accommodates two vessel holders, in a variety of sizes, and supports needle injection volumes between 0.1 and 50 µL. Optionally, it can inject volumes as large as 1.0 mL. Optional temperature control is available, controlling the sample compartment temperature between 4 °C and 40 °C.

Column heating options The 30-cm Column Heater with Active Solvent Preheating (CH30-A, part number 186015045) offers these features:

• Control of compartment temperatures between 5 °C above ambient and 90 °C.

• A standard, active pre-heater (APH) assembly that heats the incoming solvent before it enters the column.

• Accommodation for LC columns of dimensions as large as 4.6-mm internal diameter (ID) and 30-cm long.

• eCord™ paperless tracking history of column usage. The 30-cm Column Heater (30-cm CH, part number 186017008) offers passive preheating that can operate as low as 5 °C above the ambient temperature, to 65 °C. An optional, 3-position, 9,500-psi column-selection valve is available. The 30-cm Column Heater/Cooler (30-cm CHC, part number 186017009) offers a 30-cm column heater/cooler option with passive preheating. The operating range of the passive pre-heater is the ambient temperature minus 15 °C to 65 °C or, alternatively, 4 °C to 65 °C (whichever is greater). A 3-position, 9,500-psi column-selection valve is available as an option. Tip: The Sample Manager FTN-R controls these modules; therefore, they do not have separate ICS or firmware. Restrictions:

• If your system configuration includes multiple column compartments, you can operate the system using only one column compartment at a time.

• The device can use either passive pre-heating or a column-selection valve, but not both.

Compatibility Considerations for Empower Enterprise

To ensure compatibility in Empower Enterprise environments, you must sometimes install additional drivers to control modules other than the ACQUITY Arc modules. These release notes include a table, below, to describe the compatibility of the ACQUITY Arc system components with systems supported by Waters Driver Pack 4 Supplemental Release 1 (DP4SR1).

Important: To ensure compatibility with the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack, Waters systems, that are not ACQUITY Arc systems, must be updated to DP4SR1.

Requirements:

• Install the ACQUITY Arc Driver Pack after all other driver pack and ICS installations are completed, including those produced by third-party vendors and supported by Empower.

• To facilitate compatibility between the ACQUITY Arc and DP4SR1 driver packs, ensure that the ICS and firmware versions installed on the same LAC/E™32 are consistent with the versions specified in the compatibility table, below.

Example: A LAC/E32 module with DP4SR1 installed can support an ACQUITY UPLC® H-Class QSM with ICS, version 1.65, and an ACQUITY Arc system. If the ACQUITY QSM ICS and firmware are earlier versions, they must be upgraded to version 1.65.

Where to install in Empower environments

Where you install ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack depends on the configuration of computers and instruments in your laboratory. Empower environments comprise three configurations:

• Standalone, Empower Personal workstations.

• One or more LAC/E32 modules connected to Empower clients in an Empower Enterprise system.

• One or more LAC/E32 modules connected to Citrix thin clients via a Citrix server in an Empower Enterprise system.

Requirements:

• You can install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on standalone workstations as desired.

• You can install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on LAC/E32 modules as desired.

• You must install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on Empower clients and Citrix servers connected to LAC/E32 modules running the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack.

Exceptions: Do not install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on Empower database servers or Citrix thin clients.

Additional guidelines

In an Empower client/server network, install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on all the Empower clients. You can maintain older instrument drivers on the LAC/E32 modules. Instrument drivers on a given LAC/E32 module, and firmware loaded on instruments connected to that module, must be from the same driver pack.

When you install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on your Empower clients, do not install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on your LAC/E32 modules as well, unless you plan to upgrade the firmware on instruments connected to those modules. For example, if you install DP4SR1 on a LAC/E32 module, the instruments connected to that module must run firmware that accompanies DP4SR1.

You must perform upgrades on LAC/E32 modules and connected instruments at the same time, to ensure that instrument drivers and instrument firmware originate with the same driver pack. For example, if you install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack on another LAC/E32 module, you must install the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack firmware for the instruments connected to that module.

Known issues in this release The table below lists known software defects in the ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack. Waters’ change request database uses the software change request (SCR) numbers in the left-hand column to track these issues.

SCR number

Instruments or software components Description

32509, 33339

QSM-R Rarely, the method editor can crash when you click to a different instrument method editor, and then you immediately click back again. Work-around: Reset the module, open the QSM-R method editor, and re-enter the parameter settings. Avoid clicking quickly between instrument method editors.

31749 SM FTN-R The Empower sample set cannot reach the four large vial positions, V:1 through V:4. Work-around: You can reference standard vials.

32547, 32556, 32557

SM FTN-R When performing load-ahead with auto-addition, the system uses the wrong Number of Samples value when loading the next samples. It uses the number of samples of the current injection and not the number of samples of the next injection, as it should. Currently, ICS/Empower does not send a complete set of samples for the next injection to be loaded ahead; rather, ICS/Empower sends only the first sample within the next set. The SM FTN-R then recognizes that the upcoming injection sample list does not match the current injection sample list, and it washes the needle, causing the loss of the sample drawn during the load-ahead phase. The injection time cannot be estimated correctly. Work-around: Do not use auto-addition with load-ahead.

32661 SM FTN-R Problems can occur when the dilution option is used in conjunction with a pre-sample air gap:

• The pre-sample air gap is dispensed with a portion of the dilution volume.

• The dilution volume is reduced by the size of the air gap when dispensed into the sample.

Work-around: Avoid adding an optional pre-sample air gap when using the dilution option.

33265 SM FTN-R Drawing an air gap that exceeds the syringe capacity causes a failure. Some functions allow the sample syringe to perform multiple draws, to aspirate the desired volume:

• Dilution operation • Large post-sample air gap

Example: For a 100-µL syringe and a 250-µL extension loop, if you select a pre-sample air gap of 5 µL (optional), a sample of 75 µL, and a post-sample air gap of 25 µL (larger than the default setting), an error occurs.

Instruments or software components Description

Work-around: When specifying a pre-sample air gap and a post-sample air gap for a sample, ensure that the syringe is large enough to contain the total.

32864 Citrix environment

Installing updated drivers for 2414, 2475, and 2424 detectors in a Citrix environment, without updating the LAC/E32 nodes for any existing systems, is not supported. Work-around: If you install these drivers, you must also update the LAC/E32 nodes for any existing systems.

31736 2475 FLR detector

Existing 2475 ICS methods are not compatible with all languages. Work-around: If you want to use a method that was created in the released 2475 ICS in a different language, you must install the new ICS, open the method in the language in which it was created, and then save the method. The saved method is compatible with all languages.

33550 2475 FLR detector

On detectors with the older 161-charge amperage, when you start the detector and then perform the “manual shift calibrate”, the reference offset is calculated incorrectly. The value corrects itself on startup, so the issue occurs only after a “manual shift calibrate”. This value is not stored as part of the method.

33585 2475 FLR detector

When a module’s interactive display page controls the system, and an Empower sample set is started, the sample set immediately stops and a “Run aborted” message appears. Work-around: Click the module page in the console, and then click Control > Reset module.

31746, 31758

2424 ELS detector

In the MassLynx Inlet Configuration Detector dialog box, two ELS detectors can appear, but one is obsolete. The MassLynx Inlet Configuration Detector dialog box includes an outdated driver, “Waters 2424”. Work-around: When configuring the MassLynx inlet and a 2424 detector is connected, ensure that you select “2424 ELS Detector” in the Detector Configuration dialog box, not “Waters 2424”.

32372 2424 ELS detector

The updated driver for the 2424 does not work unless the same ICS version is installed on both the client and server. Work-around: Choose one of the following:

• Don't update to version 1.65, and continue operating without a console and control panel.

• Update both the client and server to version 1.65, to gain a console and control panel. Note that the LAC/E32 must also be updated with the latest infrastructure and driver.

Instruments or software components Description

33630, 33631

2424 ELS detector

When you create methods specifying alarm limits for a drift tube or an external column heater, the sample run can start while the temperature is outside the temperature band. Reason: The 2424 firmware waits for up to an hour for the temperature to get within the alarm band. Nevertheless, it does not prevent an injection from starting if the temperature is outside the band. If the temperature is not reached before acquisition begins, a warning is entered in the log.

31750 2414 RI detector

In 410 mode, the firmware displays the method filter time of 0.2 as 0.0.

31230 2414 RI detector in 410 emulation mode

The sensitivity setting in an Empower instrument method affects negative peaks, but it does not appear to affect positive peaks (communication through Ethernet). Reason: In 410 emulation mode, firmware does not allow the legacy Millennium data to be negative. When the sensitivity is increased (greater than or equal to 64), the range is reduced, and you are more likely to see negative saturation of data. Changing the polarity to the opposite value or reducing the sensitivity allows you to utilize a larger range and alleviate the clipping behavior. Work-around: Switch the polarity.

Requalification guidelines

The ACQUITY Arc v1.65 Driver Pack includes instrument driver software and firmware used on your laboratory instruments, servers, and workstations. As with any change in a regulated environment, follow your organization's standard operating procedures for managing software changes.

This update has been designed not to alter the physical specifications of the instrument(s) or system(s), and Waters believes that methods run and data generated on instruments before and after the update will be identical.

However, after a risk based review of the changes detailed in the release notes, users in a regulated environment may need to consider and document what, if any, requalification of the instrument modules, the chromatographic system, and/or the Chromatographic Data System (CDS) are required by their own change control SOPs.

Use the appropriate qualification methods outlined below to verify installation and correct operation:

To confirm that the driver pack installation has not negatively affected any critical system functions, and that the new files have loaded properly, you may consider performing a software Installation Qualification (IQ). To confirm the firmware files installed on the modules are correctly installed, compare the checksum values in the product release notes to the checksum values displayed in the console.

To confirm an instrument's operation with the newly loaded driver software and firmware, you may consider performing an Operational Qualification (OQ) for the updated instrument or system.

To confirm performance, control, and communications of the instruments in your system, you should consider conducting a Performance Qualification (PQ) (user or vendor PQ) or System Suitability test.

Where multiple identical systems are involved, a risk based approach to qualification activities may be an important consideration.

Requalifying the instrument driver software, firmware, and hardware when upgrading is covered under the Total Assurance Plan with System Qualification Option in the following cases:

• During yearly requalification under the plan. • If loading this release is required for operation of a new module or

system, where qualification of the new module or system is covered under the plan.

Requalification of the CDS software and computers after a driver upgrade may or may not be included in Assurance Plans from the CDS vendor.

Review your Total Assurance Plan to determine which services are covered, and which are not covered. For situations not covered under the plan, Waters can still perform the qualification, but additional charges apply.

Anti-virus considerations If you are using real-time virus scanning, exclude the data system and instruments folders and sub-folders as shown below. Some real-time virus scanners can mistake normal data acquisition and instrument control for virus activity and thus interfere with proper operations. Full-system scans and live updates can be network-intensive, disk-intensive, and CPU-intensive, and they can also interfere with normal data acquisition. Schedule scans and updates for idle times when data acquisition does not occur.

Exclude these folders:

• For Empower 2 and Empower 3 installations, the Empower installation folder, usually “C:\Empower”, and its sub-folders.

• For MassLynx installations, • “C:\Program Files\Waters Instruments”, and its sub-folders (“C:\Program

Files (x86)\Waters Instruments” on 64-bit machines). • the MassLynx installation folder, usually “C:\Masslynx”, and its sub-

folders. • For standalone console software and other third party installations,

“C:\Program Files\Waters Instruments”, and its sub-folders (“C:\Program Files (x86)\Waters Instruments” on 64-bit machines).

Certain anti-virus program features like “intrusion prevention” and “tamper protection” can also interfere with normal operation. Disable them as well.
