American Central Transport, Inc. January — March 2018 ACT Named 2018 Best Fleets to Drive For ACT ION L INE We were delighted to learn in late January that we were one of twenty fleets awarded the prestigious Best Fleets to Drive For. This award is designed to recognize the top 20 for-hire trucking companies located in the United States and Canada for providing exemplary work environments for their company driv- ers and independent contractors. To be considered for the Best Fleets program, compa- nies must be first nominated by at least one of their drivers. CarriersEdge then has the carrier fill out a survey which asks about all aspects of carrier’s driver programs, training initiatives, services offered and pay programs. The carrier is then inter- viewed for deeper explanations of corporate directions, policies and programs. The fleets are then evaluated using a scoring matrix covering a variety of categories, such as total compensa- tion package, health benefits, retirement plans, professional de- velopment opportunities and career advancement opportunities, among other criteria. Driver feedback was then compared with management’s comments and incorporated into the final score resulting in the selection of this year’s winners. Our fleet scored a 95% driver satisfaction rate. This was one of the highest scores they had this year. Needless to say, it is a long and extensive process to be named as one of the Best Fleets to Drive For. For me…this is a validation of all we have worked toward for years. From our ownership, our management team and all of our associates, this is truly a team win. Our goal has always been to be the company that pays better, treats its drivers better, and provides a work- place that truly does live up to our core values of safety, integri- ty, respect, accountability and family. This driving effort has come from the fact that we want to be the kind of carrier that earns the right to retain you be- cause of the “Total ACT Package.” It can be seen in our daily approach of how we do business as well as with strategic deci- sions such as: New Plaza Building – This 22,000-square foot building is a clear strategic investment in our future. Creating a clean and comfortable space that provides all the comforts of home while away from your family. Core Values – Living out our core values which helps us define who we are, how we treat each other and how we conduct our daily business. Mileage Pay/Contract Rate – We have always taken pride in being in the top pay quadrant in our industry. Lead- ing the way for pay increases with the recent example of company driver pay rate increase and independent contrac- tor contract rate increase. Drive Your Pay – Rewarding company drivers for the miles they drive through a monthly bonus plan. The more you drive the greater the bonus. Benefits – Providing a complete benefit package that is industry leading for our drivers. We offer health, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, critical illness and life insurance policies. Leading the industry in low premiums and broad coverage. Retirement – Offering a dollar for dollar match up to 4% of your income that you designate in our 401K matching program. Where else can you get a 100% return on your investment? MPG Bonus – Rewarding top performers that get the best mpg in the fleet. Training – Providing quarterly training opportunities to help our drivers be up to date on latest regulations and driving safety. We believe it is important to invest in you to help you become the safest driver you can be. Total Rewards – A reward program that allows you to collect points for training, anniversaries and for going above and beyond. These points can then be redeemed for items you would like to have. One of the special things about ACT is that our drivers get all the benefits that you would get at a large carrier yet you are known, valued and so much more than a truck number. You are a member of our family. This is why it is important to keep in mind that we strive to provide a highly competitive compensation package that provides a great mileage rate and yet so much more. It’s why we hold ourselves accountable to live out our core values so that we earn the right to continue to be your employer. I am proud to get to be part of this winning team and to work alongside our drivers, mechanics and office staff. This award confirms what we have worked toward and believed for some time… that we are one of the Best Fleets to Drive For. It is an honor to be part of the ACT family. Safe trucking! Phil

ACTIONLINE

We were delighted to learn in late January that we were one of twenty fleets awarded the prestigious Best Fleets to Drive For. This award is designed to recognize the top 20 for-hire trucking companies located in the United States and Canada for providing exemplary work environments for their company driv-ers and independent contractors. To be considered for the Best Fleets program, compa-nies must be first nominated by at least one of their drivers. CarriersEdge then has the carrier fill out a survey which asks about all aspects of carrier’s driver programs, training initiatives, services offered and pay programs. The carrier is then inter-viewed for deeper explanations of corporate directions, policies and programs. The fleets are then evaluated using a scoring matrix covering a variety of categories, such as total compensa-tion package, health benefits, retirement plans, professional de-velopment opportunities and career advancement opportunities, among other criteria. Our goal has always been to be the company that pays better, treats its drivers better, and provides a work-place that truly does live up to our core values of safety, integri-ty, respect, accountability and family. This driving effort has come from the fact that we want to be the kind of carrier that earns the right to retain you be-cause of the “Total ACT Package.” It can be seen in our daily approach of how we do business as well as with strategic deci-sions such as:

New Plaza Building – This 22,000-square foot building is a clear strategic investment in our future.

Lead-ing the way for pay increases with the recent example of company driver pay rate increase and independent contrac-tor contract rate increase.

AOBRD and ELD By Brandon Leininger

Director of Risk Management

As many of you know, the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate took affect December 18, 2017. This mandate came as a result of many years of regulatory work among Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and representatives of the transporta-tion industry to require the electronic capturing of drivers’ records of duty status (RODS) through the hours of service regulation. This regulatory mandate has become proclaimed as one of the most sig-nificant changes within the transportation industry in recent decades. How Does This Affect Drivers for ACT? Here at American Central Transport, Safety is one of our 5 core values. We are by the book and go above and beyond what the law requires as we recognize the safety of our drivers and the motor-ing public is of high importance. We have been utilizing Automatic On-Boarding Recording Devices (AOBRD) for many years. Our driv-ers have already been familiar with having to record and capture their Record of Duty Status (RODS) electronically as part of their hours of service requirements. While there are similarities among AOBRD’s and ELD’s, there are also differences to note as well. When the initial ELD mandate was published as final and took effect December 18, 2017, FMCSA granted carriers like ACT the ability to continue using their previously installed AOBRD software devices and were grandfa-thered under the mandate until December 16, 2019. The original exceptions to this grandfathered exemption stated that if a carrier net increased their vehicle count after December 18, 2017, those net increase vehicles would be required to have an ELD installed into such vehicles that were part of the net increase. Additionally, if a carrier had to repair or replace an AOBRD after the mandate effective date, and such AOBRD device was not under current manufacturer warranty status, the motor carrier would then be required to install an ELD in that particular vehicle. As recent as Friday, March 9, 2018, the FMCSA made some recent changes pertaining to the AOBRD grand-fathered exemption. The decision was made to allow carriers that had compliant, AOBRD’s installed prior to December 18, 2017, to continue to replace and re-pair units with AOBRD software, regardless of warranty status, as long as the new device replaced in the vehicle is capable of support-ing ELD software. The decision to implement and convert over to ELD software is therefore up to the motor carrier, so long as these parameters are met. The big picture take away is that you are driving for a carrier (ACT) that has been ahead of this change for many years. We will continue to implement necessary training and strategies to success-fully integrate and launch ELD software within our company at the appropriate time before the AOBRD exemption expires December 16, 2019. Stay tuned as there will be more to come!

Idle Reduction By Patrick Babb

Driver Training Specialist

The national average price for diesel is $2.957. With a weekly average of 2500 miles per week at 7.0 MPG, you will go through 18,571 gallons in a year, or around $54,915.71 at the current price. As you can see, fuel cost is an important factor to operating a tractor trailer. Truck idle is perhaps the biggest waste of fuel in the industry. Our solution has been the APU, which uses a fraction of the fuel of an idling truck. Truck operation takes a great amount of skill in every aspect, including the reduction and elimination of wasteful idling.

During extreme periods of hot and cold weather, it can sometimes seem like your APU climate control can’t keep up. In most cases, the issue could be resolved by taking these simple steps:

Keep your truck interior clean. Dust and debris can easily get sucked into your return air intakes, eventually clogging the air filter and greatly reducing air flow.

Close BOTH of your curtains. This adds a layer of insulation between your sleeper and the less protected cab which has uninsulated glass that allows heat and cold to transfer.

Before parking, preheat/cool your sleeper during the last hours of your trip. The APU will work much more efficiently in an acclimatized environment.

If it’s hot and sunny, attempt to park your truck in a position that places your trailer’s back to the sun, blocking the hot rays from directly shining on your tractor. If possible, park in a rest area that offers shade trees.

In the winter, avoid parking at the end of a row of trucks, which would expose one side of your unit to winter winds. Try to park between other trucks or buildings to give yourself an extra shield from the cold, moving air that might other-wise leech heat from your sleeper.

Remember, you aren’t just a driver, but a skilled Opera-tor who has the knowledge and ability to coax a nine-ton tractor into a safe, efficient, profit-making machine.

Introducing Traction!

We have all had to start our careers somewhere. Some of us had great training, some us of us did not. One thing we know is that ACT is a fantas-tic place to both work and call home. Over the past several months, we have been working on expanding our training pro-grams so that we can ensure the next generation of drivers are able to have a great start in their career. Our goal is to open new channels of safe, professional, and courteous drivers so we can continue to grow and still provide the same amazing level of ser-vice to our customers. We have had the React program in place for approximately 10 years and we’ve been able to take the lessons learned from it and put together a training program that will be best in class. We have developed two new levels of training. One is a 6 week program, and the other is a 4 week program. Both of them will have 13 weeks of continual follow up and mentoring to ensure continued success. For our 6 week program, we are partnering with a couple of top notch, certified schools in the Kansas City ar-ea, and once they have graduated, they will have a full week of classroom training before heading out with a trainer. For the 4 week program, once a person has graduated from an approved, certified school and has a minimum of 2 months OTR experience with another company, they can join ACT, have a full week of classroom training, then will have 4 weeks with a trainer. We are also updating our current ReACT program and will use it to help transition military veterans out of the service to give them a nice transition back into the civilian job market and to help drivers get back on the road who have been off for a while. There will be more to come on this program soon. To be clear, we are not looking to become a full scale training company, but simply want to put the best students in the best equipment with the best company out there. We get to experience this every day at ACT. Let’s all help the new guys have some solid traction to start their career!

NEWS Drivers of the Year for 2017

Drivers of the year nominees are pulled from driver of the month winners. In order to be eligible as a monthly nominee, the driver must be with ACT for at least 6 months, be in the top 3 in miles for the month, have no service failures, no preventable accidents or moving violations and no drivecam coachable events for that month. From that final list of 3 drivers, DSM & afterhours vote for one driver & the driver with the most votes is selected as the winner. Tie breakers go to the driver with the most miles. A driver can win only once every 12 months. The Driver of the Year is selected by the driver with highest miles for the year that did not have any service failures, preventable accidents, mov-ing violations or drivecam coachable events for that year.

Jacob Melton Congratulations! Chris Pickert Company Driver Contractor

2017 Safe Driver of the Year

At ACT, we take pride in our Safety per-formance as a motor carrier along with our drivers’ safety performances. While we have many accomplished safe drivers within our company, there is one partic-ular driver that has demonstrated this core value to the fullest in 2017. Our

2017 ACT Safest Driver of the Year Award went to Doug Hager. Doug started in May of 2016 and has not incurred any coachable events within our Lytx DriveCam program! Doug is currently the only driver that has accomplished this particular achievement from the time he hired on to present. Doug also went the entire year of 2017 without incurring any hours of ser-vice violations while driving a total of 118,640 miles for the year as well. Additionally, Doug also did not incur any roadside viola-tions nor preventable accidents during that time frame ei-ther. Along with a special jacket and a certificate for his accom-plishments, Doug was also awarded a $1,000 check! Please help us in saying “Congrats” to Doug Hager for his safety accomplish-ments!” Congratulations to Doug Hager!

DriveCam No Coachables In 2017, ACT had 17 individual drivers that went the entire cal-endar without incurring a single coachable event in the Lytx DriveCam program! This is quite an accomplishment for each of these drivers to have demonstrated their professional skills and safety performance for the 12 consecutive months of 2017. Each of these drivers received recognition on the office floor along with a certificate and a new jacket showing the “No Coachable DriveCam Award” logo. If you happen to come across any of these drivers, please take a moment to say “Congrats” to them for their accomplishments during 2017!

Quarterly DSM Training By Brian Matthews, VP of Operations

In the 4th quarter newsletter, I informed you that 2018 will focus on the drivers. We certainly made

that point loud & clear with a very robust driver pay increase & bonus program that took effect in March. To keep with the mo-mentum, we stepped up our DSM training and have provided more tools available to the DSM to help you reach mileage goals for each month. Just like you are required to perform Safety training each quarter, we will be putting the DSM’s through training each quarter as well. In the 1st quarter, our President, Phil Wilt held training courses for each DSM that focused on a Win-Win approach when dealing with conflict. While the DSM’s number one job is to pro-vide support for you, the professional driver, they also work closely with other departments which can cause other con-flicts. They must answer to the shop for equipment that has deadlines with regards to service. The Safety department leans on the DSM to help route & bring drivers into KC for safety re-views, permits, and other administrative items. Customers as well have requirements that are difficult to meet with regards to deadlines and shipping/receiving needs. The DSM is often in the middle of these conflicts and are trying to develop solutions that make it win-win for everyone. By providing them training that is specific to their job functions, it allows them to enhance your driving experience at ACT. In order for you to be successful at ACT, it takes everyone working togeth-er to be successful!

William Evans was named the February Contrac-tor of the month. William has been with ACT for four years. He lives in Smyrna TN and his safety advice to others would be to always drive defen-sively and be patient. William loves the freedom that driving provides and he likes ACT because they have good equipment and a friendly staff. Ken Dobisch is his DSM.

Oil Change Intervals By Richie Runions, Maintenance Director

We are hearing a lot of chatter out there on why we decided to go to a 70,000 mile oil change inter-val. Some drivers feel like we are putting equip-

ment at risk of breaking down on the road because of this decision, but here are a few reasons why we have decided to update our process:

For the PACCAR 2017/2018 MX13 and Detroit DD15 2015/2018 the recommended oil change interval is 75,000 miles. PACCAR has also looked over our maintenance records along with our oil analysis data and has approved us to run all our MX13 en-gines out to 70,000 miles.

For years we have collected oil analysis and have stacks of data to support our decision to extend the oil change interval.

We have always run premium products (semi-synthetic oil and grease) and have not taken full advantage of their capabilities.

Equipment with APU’s idle much less reducing carbon build-up because of the low engine idling. As a result there are less contaminants building up in the engine oil.

So, with technology getting better and better, our engines becom-ing more and more efficient, and our continuing oil analysis pro-gram, we are confident with our decision to extend our service intervals to the 70,000 mile mark. Next question is what about the APU? The APU’s preventative maintenance interval is governed by the hours of use. Additionally, most of our trucks come through the shop for driver write-ups, so we will check the APU hours each time your truck is in the shop to make sure your APU is getting its service as needed. With this decision we are going to need you, our drivers, to do your part. We aren’t asking you to do anything new. Please make sure you are doing a thorough Pre-trip and Post-Trip inspection and as always contact the shop if you find anything that needs attention. We are expecting this change will give you, the driver, less down time, more time to be driving. Fewer PM’s means less waiting time at the shop and less operating costs. That’s a “Win/Win” for every-one.

2017 MPG Winners

The annual MPG winners represent the company drivers that finished the

year with at least 108,000 miles and had the highest

MPG for that year. Congrats to Rocky and
