1 ACTIVITY 2: PINOY KIDS FOR SMOKE FREE PHILIPPINES ( Nationwide Anti-Smoking, Anti-Vaping Campaign for the Youth) JULY AUGUST 2017 The Philippine Pediatric Society,Inc. through the PPS Tobacco Control Advocacy Group ( PPS-TCAG ) in cooperation with the Department of Education ( through DepEd Advisory No. 109 s2017,Appendix 2) has just finished a nationwide awareness campaign on Anti-Smoking and Anti-Vaping in selected public or private schools and selected SM Malls events center. The main objective is to increase the awareness of the youth particularly Grades 7-9 on the dangers of smoking ,second hand smoke and electronic nicotine delivery system ( ENDS ). This was done in anticipation of the E.O. 26 Nationwide Smoking Ban and in support of the EskeweLa Ban sa Sigarilyo project of Department of Education focusing on the youth . The recent GYTS data revealed an increasing trend of smokers among the youth ( from 12% in 2010 to nearly 16 % in 2015) . The PPS -TCAG envisions that by properly educating and involving the early adolescents in anti-smoking and anti-vaping campaign will help prevent replacement smokers and hence create a decrease in youth smokers by 2020. Smoking when started in the younger age has graver and longer lasting effect to the young brains addiction to nicotine . The PPS-TCAG developed an informative lecture slides on The Dangers of Smoking, Second Hand Smoke and Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems”(Appendix 3) and was disseminated to all the PPS Chapter Tobacco Control Advocates. This was used during the Nationwide Anti-Smoking Campaign in 22 sites through the PPS chapters . In addition to the lay fora , a quiz bowl was also held ( each participating school has 2 representatives to compete with the rest) and a slogan-poster making contest. The event ended with the recitation of the Oath of Commitment to Anti-Smoking and signing of the commitment wall by the participating students.
