Current Workstreams

Study Families/Students’ Preferences● Retrospective (What have families/students chosen?)

○ When (which rounds) did families/students participate in the process?

○ Which schools did they rank and in what order?○ In which schools did they choose to (if any) enroll?

● Prospective (What might families/students choose?)○ What trade-offs might they make among distance, school

quality, programs, demographic composition, and other characteristics?

○ How might their choices change when they receive more information?

Student Assignment Case Studies● Deep dives into the Berkeley, Boston, San Diego, and Seattle

school assignment models. How do these districts balance school choice with proximity? What were the outcomes and lessons learned? (Stanford)

Current Workstreams

20

Demographic Analysis● Explore how using geographical building blocks with known

student and socioeconomic characteristics can help create attendance area boundaries that support the Board’s policy goals

● Model options for elementary attendance area boundaries to support the Board’s exploration of what a local/neighborhood student assignment model might look like

Transportation Analysis● Evaluate current and past General Education Transportation

services in relation to the Board’s policy goals for GE Transportation. (UC Berkeley)

Continuous Improvement● Improve how we communicate with parents (UC Berkeley)● PreK and TK to Kindergarten priority (EPC/EED)● Distribution of SpEd programs across the district (SpEd/SPP)● African American student recruitment plan (AAPAC/EPC)

Major dependencies impacting timeline:

❖ Budget for project manager, community engagement, and student assignment experts will be secured by June 2019

❖ The amount of time needed for deep community engagement and the appropriate time frames (avoiding start of school, winter break, exam season, graduation season, and summer)➢ 3 months for initial discovery phase➢ 2 months for feedback on the policy➢ 2 months for input on boundaries

❖ The amount of time needed for Board deliberations➢ 1 month to confirm definitions, priorities, theory of action,

and which option to model➢ 2 months for First Reading, Committee Meeting, and

Second Reading➢ 1 month to confirm implementation plan with attendance

area boundaries and transportation options
