13. ABSTRACT (Maximum 200 words)

SolarElectricPropulsion(SEP)technologyiscurrentlybeingusedforgeostationarysatellitestationkeepingto increasepayloadmass. Analysesshowthatadvancedelectricpropulsiontechnologiescanbe usedto obtainadditionalincreasesinpayloadmassby usingthesesametechnologiesto performpartof theorbittransfer.In thisworkthreeelectricpropulsiontechnologiesare examinedattwo powerlevelsforan AtlasIIASclassspacecraft.Theon-boardchemicalpropulsionapogeeenginefuelis reducedin thisanalysisto allowtheuseofelectricpropulsion.Anumericaloptimizeris usedtodeterminethe chemicalbumswhichwillminimizetheelectricpropulsiontransfertime. Resultsshowthat fora 1500kgAtlasIIASclasspayload,increasesin net mass(geostationarysatellitemassless wetpropulsionsystemmass)of 100to800kg arepossibleusingelectricpropulsionforstationkeeping,advancedchemicalenginesforpartof the transferandelectricpropulsionfor the remainderof the transfer.Triptimesare betweenoneandfourmonths.
