SCOT McKNIGHT“Christmas in Luke:- Is judgment on those who have lots

of money to buy lots of presents,- Hope for those who have no

presents coming, and…- Stands as a prophetic finger

against our abundance,(and materialism), and points toliberation, and justice for the poor”

My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the poverty of his servant. Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for the Mighty One has

done great things for me, and holy is his name. His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

LUKE 1:46-50

He has shown strength with his arm;he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things,

and sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, according

to the promise he made to our ancestors,

to Abraham/his descendants forever.

ADVENT ~ Week 1

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant…

LUKE 1:68-72

…the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins.

LUKE 1:73-77

By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death,to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law…

LUKE 2:25-27

“Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

One of the scribes…asked him, “Which commandment is the first of all?” Jesus answered, “The first is: ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
