Good morning! We’re so glad you’re here!

If you are new to this faith community or visiting, we’d like to share information with you about worship and ministries at Trinity. Please let an usher know you’d like a Welcome Booklet and also fill out an information card so we can get to know you!

~~ Children are always welcome in church ~~

The Sunday Papers coloring pages and activity bags are available at the back of the sanctuary so children can sit with their parents during the church service. The nursery is open and available for parents who would appreciate this offering. It is located in the west wing of this building, up the stairs outside the west sanctuary door. Older children are invited to Children’s Chapel (September to mid-June) during the first part of the service, returning for the Eucharist.

Parents, grandparents, and guardians are welcome to join their children in the Nursery or

Children's Chapel to observe and enjoy these activities.

The following pages of this bulletin provide information about our services this morning, including the text of our assigned readings and the music (at our 10:15 service), as well as news about upcoming events. Please take this bulletin with you to refer to in the coming days.

The small candle on the altar is a Candle for Peace. A practice begun in Russia, peace candles are being passed from church to church around the world. (Ours is from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles, Oregon.) The candles and the story of the peace candle are available at the back of the church.

We hope guests and visitors will take a peace candle to their home church.

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT November 27, 2016

Holy Eucharist (Advent Liturgy) – 10:15 AM

It is customary for the congregation to prepare for the service in quiet and prayer.

The Nursery offers care for young ones at both services.

“Children’s Chapel” is provided most Sundays during the 10:15 service.

Hymns and other sung parts of the service are printed in the red Hymnals.

The Celebrant may say

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no

secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

The Celebrant bids the assigned collect, saying these or some other words of introduction

God be with you. People And also with you. Priest Let us pray.

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put

on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First Reading – Isaiah 2:1-5

A lector reads the first reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Book of the prophet Isaiah.

The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

In days to come the mountain of the LORD’s house

shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills;

all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say,

‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob;

that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’

For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples;

they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks;

nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

7

O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD!

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

The Psalm – Psalm 122

A reader leads the congregation in saying the Psalm at the 8 AM service.

At the 10:15 service, the People sing the Psalm following what is known as “Simplified Anglican Chant.” Each half-verse of the Psalm is sung on the reciting note up to the last accented syllable (in bold print below). If there are an odd number of verses, the last verse repeats the final two bars.

1 I was glad when they said to me, *

"Let us go to the house of the LORD."

2 Now our feet are standing * within your gates, O Jerusalem.

3 Jerusalem is built as a city * that is at unity with itself;

4 To which the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, * the assembly of Israel, to praise the Name of the LORD.

5 For there are the thrones of judgment, * the thrones of the house of David.

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: * "May they prosper who love you.

7 Peace be within your walls * and quietness within your towers.

8 For my brethren and companions' sake, * I pray for your prosperity.

9 Because of the house of the LORD our God, * I will seek to do you good."

Second Reading – Romans 13:11-14

A lector reads the second reading from Scripture, first saying

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans.

You know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from

sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

At the conclusion of the reading, the lector says

Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

Gospel Hymn (10:15 only) “O Come, O come, Emmanuel” Hymnal 56, vv. 1-2

Gospel – Matthew 24:36-44

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mathew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to the disciples, “But about that day and hour no one knows,

neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon – The Rev. Canon Marianne Borg

A period of silence will be observed for reflection after the sermon.

An Affirmation of Faith – all stand, as able

The People say an Affirmation of Faith, adapted from Laughing Bird Liturgical Resources.

We believe in God, creator and lover of the earth, origin and destiny of us all.

We believe in Jesus the Christ - God coming to us in the fragile promise of a baby yet unborn –

who emerges as the herald of hope, God's laughter in the face of despair.

Plunged into death and hell, he broke free the captives,

and is leading the way to the land of promise, where justice and peace will flourish.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, who implants the seed of truth,

brings us to birth as the body of Christ, and empowers us to confront and transform all that is corrupt, degrading and deceitful.

We believe in the coming reign of God. Announced by the Baptist,

it has drawn near to us in Jesus, and will be consummated in the glorious marriage of earth and heaven, when all who have passed through the world's deep sorrow will be gathered into the joyous fulfillment of God's desire.

As we work for the coming of that day, let us pray, Come, Lord Jesus, Come!

The Prayers of the People – from New Song Episcopal Church, Coralville, Iowa

The Celebrant introduces the Prayers, saying the following or other words of introduction.

God of wonder and awe, as we watch for your signs in sun, moon and stars, we pray to you saying, “Stay with us while we wait.”

The Leader of the Prayers continues

For the church that watches and waits for you; for those who seek, or lead or follow, that the path be made straight for your coming.

The people add their prayers for the church, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For our nation and for the welfare of the whole world, that a spirit of mutual respect may inform and instruct our leaders, and that people everywhere might hold whatever is true and honorable, just or pure or pleasing in our hearts, joyfully living your vision for all of creation.

The people add prayers of intercession and thanksgiving for the world, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For this community, that our love may grow with knowledge and insight as we discern the gifts and the challenges around us.

The people add their prayers for the local community, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For all who suffer and for the needs and concerns, hopes and thanksgivings of the community gathered here this day.

The people add their prayers for those who suffer, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Stay with us while we wait.

For those who have died. For the fullness of their joy in you, and their place in the company of heaven, that they too, may be present while we wait.

11

The people add their prayers for those who have died, silently or aloud.

God who has come and is coming again, People Light our way to you.

The Celebrant concludes with the following (or another suitable) collect.

Creator God, we praise you for your love in coming to us. Give us grace to accept the Christ who comes in your name, and the courage to be Christ for others. Amen.

The Exchange of the Peace

The Celebrant says to the people

Blessed be Christ the Prince of Peace People who breaks down the walls that divide.

Celebrant The peace of God be always with you. People Praise to Christ who unites us in peace.

Please greet those sitting beside and in the rows in front of and/or behind you.

Birthday/Anniversary Blessings (along with other special prayers/announcements)

Those with birthdays and/or anniversaries to celebrate are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. The People and Celebrant say the appropriate prayer together.

For birthdays: Watch over your children (child), O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of their lives (life), through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For anniversaries: O gracious and everliving God, look mercifully on your servants. Grant them your blessing, and assist them with your grace, that with true fidelity and steadfast love they may honor and keep their promises and vows; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

If other members of the congregation wish, they may ask for additional prayers and blessings.

A small “treasure chest” is placed on the chancel rail near the flowers. As members come forward for blessing, they may choose to place a thank offering in the chest. These gifts will be used to support outreach efforts for others in our community.

Offertory Hymn “Signs of endings all around us” WLP 721

Representatives of the congregation bring the people’s offerings of bread and wine to the deacon.

While the table is prepared, ushers will receive offerings as a hymn is sung.

Usher present offerings of money or other gifts and then present these offerings to the celebrant.

As these offerings are presented at the 10:15 service, the People sing the following, using the tune of Hymn 380.

Be present at our table, Lord: Be here and everywhere adored; These creatures bless; and grant that we may feast in fellowship with thee. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving – adapted from Prayers for an Inclusive Church

The People stand as the offering is brought forward. The Celebrant, whether bishop or priest, faces them and

Our God comes; People The Advent of the Holy One draws near.

Celebrant Lift your hearts to heaven People Where Christ in glory reigns.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to God. People It is right to offer thanks and praise.

The Celebrant continues

Mystery of the winter skies, we thank you in the darkening hour for opening our eyes to see your starlit beauty; for parting the wide heavens to send your gentle light; for offering your word to take our mortal flesh.

He was promised by those who shared your dream of peace; John the Baptist cleared his way with words of desert fire; Mary and Joseph accepted his coming with tenderness and faith; we know that he draws near again to show us who we really are with honesty and love.

Now we take up the song of hope that we might awaken to his coming among us and the world by the footfall of his glory:

The setting for the Sanctus (“Holy, holy, holy Lord …”) is sung as below.

Page 14: The First Sunday of Advent - Trinity Episcopal Churchtrinitybend.org/wp-content/uploads/2016-11-27-Advent-1... · 2019-12-18 · The First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2016 Good

14

The Celebrant continues

We ask that your Holy Spirit will fall upon us and upon these gifts; that these fragile, earthly things may be for us the body and blood of our Lord and brother, Jesus Christ; who on the night he was betrayed, gathered with his faltering friends for a meal that tasted of freedom.

Calling them to his table, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me.

In the same way after supper, he took the cup, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.

As on that night, so here and now he offers himself in touch and taste beyond all words can hold.

Let us therefore proclaim the great mystery of our faith:

People Christ has died, Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

And so, in our eating and drinking we are filled with the life-giving presence of Christ; we proclaim him as creation’s host, transforming poverty into plenty in the reckless generosity of love.

Inspire us with the hope that one day death and greed will be no more and people without number will come from east and west, north and south to share the kingdom meal.

15

We ask this through Jesus Christ, by whom and with whom and in whom in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Lord of blessings, for ever and ever.

People AMEN.

Lord’s Prayer

Presider As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread and Sharing of Communion

The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread and a period of silence is kept.

Then may be sung

Lifting the bread and cup, the priest invites the people, saying

Come God’s people, come to receive Christ’s heavenly food.

The ushers will direct parishioners forward at the appropriate time.

All who seek God and a deeper life in Christ are welcome to receive Holy Eucharist. If you would prefer a blessing, simply cross your arms on your chest. Receiving either the bread or the wine by itself constitutes full reception of the Holy Sacrament.

Gluten-free wafers are available. If this alternative is needed, please notify the person distributing bread at the altar rail.

Communion Music

The choir and/or instrumentalists typically share music while the people receive communion.

Prayer Station (10:15 only) `

A prayer station is available while communion is being shared. If you would appreciate personal prayer, please step to the station beside the steps and a member of the Prayer Ministry Team will offer prayerful support for healing (and for sharing of any other concerns or thanksgivings).

Prayer after Communion

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

People Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image and nourishing us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood. Now send us forth a people forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

Commissioning of Eucharistic Visitor(s) – all stand, as able

If communion is being taken out, the Celebrant commissions the Minister(s), saying

In the name of this congregation, I send you forth bearing these holy gifts (for N.N.), that those to whom you go may share with us in the communion of Christ’s body and blood.

People We who are many are one body, because we share one bread, one cup.

Blessing of God’s People in Advent

The Celebrant offers a blessing, using a form specific to the season of Advent, saying

May Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior came among us, sanctify you with the light of his blessing and set you free. Amen.

May the one whose second Coming in power and great glory we await, make you steadfast in faith, joyful in hope, and constant in love. Amen.

May you who rejoice in the first Advent of our Redeemer, at his second Advent be rewarded with unending life. Amen.

And the blessing of God Almighty, Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of life, be with you always. Amen.

Recessional Hymn “The King shall come” Hymnal 73

The Dismissal

The Deacon, or the Celebrant, dismisses the people with these or similar words

Let us go forth in the name of Christ. People Thanks be to God.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome to Trinity We invite you to “stand and be counted” during our worship this morning – and perhaps to come to Brooks Hall for the Adult Forum at 9:15 between the two morning services, or stick around and join us for a cup of coffee and a chance to meet others here at Trinity after our 10:15 service.

Happy New (Church) Year! — TODAY @ 8 & 10:15 AM According to the Church calendar, today is the beginning of Advent, a new season in the Church Year and the beginning of the New Year! We mark the change of seasons with some adjustments in our services this morning (especially a seasonal liturgy at the 10:15 service).

As we did last year, we’ve opened up the Altar, creating an empty space there that will become our Crèche on Christmas Eve. During Advent, we’ll prepare room for the Holy Family, the children placing straw inside each week and others filling the space with “Gifts for the Christ Child” (see below). And the Advent Wreath is up, an implicit reminder to stop spinning our wheels during the coming weeks before Christmas.

Adult Forum — TODAY @ 9:15 AM Our weekly adult forum meets in Brooks Hall between our morning services, offering a time of fellowship, as well as a chance to exchange information or engage in deeper reflection.

This morning, we’ll talk about Advent.

According to the Church calendar, Advent is the start of a New Year. Our readings are assigned to us according to a three-year cycle … and this is Year A. Accordingly, most of our gospel lessons this year will be from Matthew’s gospel. During the Adult Forum next Sunday, we’ll get a jump start on what to expect in the year ahead. Join us in Brooks Hall for this discussion.

Advent Lessons and Carols — NEXT Sunday @ 10:15 AM Our Advent service of Lessons and Carols is intended as a solemn celebration. We’ll hear again the biblical story that precedes the more familiar Christmas story. As we hear of the promise of one who would come among us, our music will also evoke the longing of our hearts. This service will not include a sermon or the Eucharist (both of which will be offered at the 8 AM service).

St. Nicholas Dinner — Wednesday, December 7th The Church celebrates the Feast of St. Nicholas annually on December 6th, preserving the memory of the 4th Century bishop of Myra, who is remembered across the world for his care for children and acts of generosity.

Mark your calendar and plan to attend the St. Nicholas Dinner the next evening, on Wednesday, December 7th, beginning with a social hour at 4:30 PM. The dinner follows at 5:30, in Brooks Hall. Enjoy fellowship, good food, singing … and a visit from St. Nicholas himself! Please sign up this morning to attend and to choose your entrée. Your reservation should be made by December 4th.

If you’d like to attend and would appreciate a ride to and from dinner, please contact Connie McCracken, (541) 788-1215, or Julie Lear, (541) 389-2490.

ADVENT OPPORTUNITIES AND INVITATIONS

Christmas Giving Tree with Christmas Wishes Beginning this Sunday, we’ve set up our Christmas Giving Tree in Brooks Hall, and decorated it with tags (and wish list items on each of the tags). These suggestions come from the Salvation Army. After you have purchased your gifts they should be returned to the tree (or the parish office) unwrapped, by Sunday, December 11th. Questions: call Julie Lear, (541) 389-2490.

Alternative Christmas — Today and each Sunday in Advent Would you like to give a meaningful gift and skip the shopping? Come visit the Alternative Christmas Table after either of the services today and continuing through Advent. Learn about Trinity’s Alternative Christmas that benefits four of our sponsored charities: Episcopal Relief and Development, Cove/COPY, Condega, and Family Kitchen.

Christmas Food Baskets and Gifts for the Christ Child Trinity is partnering with the Salvation Army to provide Christmas food baskets. We’re handing out grocery bags this morning, with a shopping list of groceries needed to fill out a Christmas dinners. You can get everything on the list or pick and choose, then bring back the bags as an offering during the morning services next week or the following Sunday, placing your gift in the empty manger (or drop off at the church office if you are unable to attend on Sunday morning).

We’re also accepting monetary donations to offset the cost of perishable items that will be purchased. Envelopes are available for your use. Please make checks out to Trinity, with “Gifts to the Christ Child” in the memo line.

Advent — Ways to Reflect on the Season Lots of activities and offerings for the Advent season at Trinity are described in this month’s issue of The Trumpet, just mailed this past week. Here are some activities to place on your calendar:

• Advent Calendars. An Advent Calendar is much more than a way to count down the shopping days ‘til Christmas. Our church publishers offer this year’s “Slow Down. Quiet. It’s Advent!” poster as a gentle and fun way to be reminded of the true meaning of the season.

The Advent poster offers suggestions for marking each day of Advent, a simple act to do, an invitation to read from the Bible, or reflect on a poem. And you can color the squares day-by-day (and maybe return your calendar for others to enjoy during the 12 Days of Christmas).

• Advent Words. As an alternative to a physical calendar, an order of Episcopal monks invites you to join them in a daily devotion. If you subscribe @ http://www.ssje.org/adventword, they’ll send you a daily reflection on a word appropriate to the season. It’s an invitation to reflect more deeply on the true meaning of Advent and the coming season of Christmas.

If you want to take things one step further, the monks invite us to join with others from around the world in creating a global Advent Calendar. Participants will be invited to share a personal interpretation of the daily word, using a phone or tablet to take a photo and then to share that photo via Twitter or Instagram. (Check out our bulletin board for a sampling of images.)

• Advent Devotions. Leaders of Anglican and Lutheran churches in full communion are offering a series of weekly reflections. A special insert in this morning’s bulletin offers the first devotion.
