WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself in your journey of faith, you
will find a place at our table at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church. Come as you are.
There are many ways and there is no one particular way to be a part of this vibrant
community. Join us today with an open mind, and be prepared to discover a home
for your spirit that is inclusive, incarnational, and joyful.
WHO WE ARE St. Hilda, situated on the unceded territory of the shíshálh Nation, is a member of
the Anglican Church of Canada & the worldwide Anglican Communion. As a
community, we welcome & celebrate human diversity - including spirituality, eth-
nicity, gender, sexual orientation, & abilities. We aim to create a space where
people of any faith or none can question & discover the sacred in life through
openness, struggle, laughter & prayer, lived out through a common commitment to
be in solidarity with the poor & marginalized, & to cherish creation.
CHILDREN Children are welcomed to gather for a Children’s Commissioning at the beginning
of the service and then can go to Sunday School. They return in time for Com-
munion—the Lord’s supper (grape juice is available for communing). A Quiet
Room is available for parents with young children by the Sanctuary entrance.
HOLY COMMUNION ALL are welcome to come forward and receive communion, the divine life of Je-
sus which comes to us in gifts of bread and wine. Come as you are. Instructions
for newcomers joining this meal for the first time are printed in the bulletin.
ACCESSIBILITY Parking for people with disabilities are available next to the Meditation Labyrinth.
You are welcome to bring your walker or wheelchair into the sanctuary. There are
also large print bulletins available in the entry.

Greeting
Celebrant In this time and place,
we gather on the ancestral territory of the shíshálh Nation.
People From many places and peoples
we come to this house of prayer.
Celebrant In this time and place,
we await the coming of Emmanuel, God with us.
People Maranatha, come Christ come.
Celebrant In this time and place, together, one people of God.
People In the name of God,
Source of all being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit. Amen.
Lighting of the Advent Candle ...................................... Allegra Montgomery Leader Advent is a time to hope for peace between people,
and to walk in the light God gives us.
The Advent wreath is round to remind us
of God's never-ending love.
The branches are green to remind us of new life.
The candles reminds us of the light
which came into the world with Jesus:
light to brighten all of earth's dark places;
light that grows stronger
when we join in his work of building and rebuilding lives.
Today we light a candle for hope.
People God, our hope and our desire
we wait for your coming
as a woman longs for the birth,
the exile for her home,
the lover for the touch of her beloved
and the humble poor for justice.
Children’s Commissioning & Song Children are invited to gather in front of the altar to receive a prayer of commis-
sioning to Sunday School. As the children leave, those sitting on the aisle are in-
vited to form an arch for the children to walk through as they head out for Sunday
School as we sing: (Tune: Away in a Manger)
A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
a candle of hope in December’s dark night.
While angels sing blessings from heav’n’s starry sky,
our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh.
The Collect of the Day Celebrant Almighty God,
All give us grace to cast away the works of darkness
and put on the armour of light,
♫

now in the time of this mortal life
in which your Son Jesus Christ
came to us in great humility,
that on the last day,
when he shall come again in his glorious majesty
to judge both the living and the dead,
we may rise to the life immortal;
through him who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.
All are seated

Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Thanks be to God.
Psalm 122 sung by all
1 I was glad when they ¹said to me, *
“Let us go to the house ¹of the Lord.” 2 Now our ¹feet are standing *
within your gates, ¹O Je-rusalem.
3 Jerusalem is built ¹as a city *
that is at unity ¹with itself. 4 To which the tribes go up, the tribes ¹of the Lord, *
the assembly of Israel, to praise the name ¹of the Lord.
5 For there are the ¹thrones of judgement, *
the thrones of the ¹house of David. 6 Pray for the peace ¹of Jerusalem: *
“May they pros-¹per who love you.
7 Peace be with-¹in your walls *
and quietness with-¹in your towers. 8 For my kindred and com-¹panions’ sake, *
I pray for ¹your prosperity. 9 Because of the house of the ¹Lord our God, *
I will seek to ¹do you good.”
Glory to God, Source ¹of all being,*
Eternal Word and ¹Holy Spirit;
As it was in the begin- ¹ning is now*
and shall be for e- ¹ver. Amen.

Sermon ........................................................................................ Fr Ayoob Adwar
Affirmation of Faith Celebrant We are called to proclaim the truth and let us believe:
It is not true that this world and its people
are doomed to die and to be lost.
People This is true:
I have come that they may have life in all its abundance.
Celebrant It is not true that we must accept
inhumanity and discrimination, hunger and poverty,
death and destruction.
People This is true: The deaf hear, the dead are raised to life,
the poor are hearing the good news.
Celebrant It is not true that violence and hatred
should have the last word
and that war and destruction have come to stay forever.
People This is true: Death shall be no more, neither shall there be
mourning nor crying nor pain any more.
Celebrant It is not true that we are simply victims
of the powers of evil who seek to rule the world.
People This is true: The Lord whom we seek will suddenly come to
the temple; and the Lord is like a refining fire.
Celebrant It is not true that our dreams of liberation, of human dignity,
are not meant for this earth and for this history.
People This is true: It is already time for us to wake from sleep.
For the night is far gone; the day is at hand.

to name your loved one(s) aloud or silently in your heart.
Confession and Absolution Celebrant Dear friends in Christ,
God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy;
God welcomes sinners
and invites them to the table.
Let us confess our sins
confident in God’s forgiveness.
A period of silence is kept.
Celebrant Most merciful God
People we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not love you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name. Amen.
Celebrant Almighty God have mercy upon you,
pardon and deliver you from all your sins,
confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,
and keep you in eternal life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Receiving Communion If you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without,
then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to
share in the breaking of bread.
If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if
you desire the reconciliation that overcomes estrangement and alienation, then
you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant.
The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the
wine from the common cup. Wine and unfermented grape juice are served. If you
would prefer to receive a gluten-free wafer or grape juice, please inform the per-
son administering the bread or wine when they approach you. If you would prefer
to receive a blessing instead of Communion, you are welcome to come forward
and place your hands across your chest.
Choir Anthem ....................................... O Ancient Love by Michael Joncas
Prayer After Communion
Celebrant God for whom we wait,
All you have fed us with the bread of eternal life.
Keep us ever watchful,
that we may be ready to stand before the Beloved One.
We ask this in the name of Christ the Lord. Amen.
Family Thanksgiving & Announcements All are invited to share if they know of any birthdays, anniversaries or other
celebrations. We have a parish tradition of saying the following prayer by shar-
ing eye-contact with those around us.
All stand as able.
Celebrant Glory to God,
People Whose power, working in us,
can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.
Glory to God from generation to generation,
in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Diocese Advent Devotional: Archbishop Melissa Skelton will offer a reflection
each Sunday through Advent. On the other days, spiritual directors throughout the
diocese will offer their reflections. To sign-up for this free emailed Advent calen-
dar go to https://www.vancouver.anglican.ca/diocesan-resources/2019-advent-
resource Emails begin on December 1.
Offering Plate Directions: During the offering hymn, the bread and wine are
presented alongside with the offering of money. People give in many different
ways - on Sundays some give their money weekly or monthly or as they can or
they give through the Pre-Authorized Donation Program. However, the offering
plate symbolizes more than just the giving of our money - it also symbolizes our
thankfulness for the many blessings we experience and the many ways that we
give to the church. With that understanding, you are invited to place your hand
on the offertory plate as it comes past as a sign of gratitude for God’s blessings.
Holly Needed: Every Advent, the Sunday School sells holly to raise money for its
activities and gives some back to church. Bev’s tree didn’t produce any berries
this year. If you have holly to spare and can provide some, please contact Bev
Dall.
Advent Films HOPE: Queen of Katwe: Monday December 2 at 7:00 pm
Living in Katwe, a slum in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10-year-
old Phiona, her mother Nakku Harriet and younger members of her family. She
and her younger brother help their mother sell maize in the market. She also helps
care for her baby brother. Her world rapidly changes however, after being intro-
duced to the game of chess.
Queen of Katwe is one of the most Spiritually Literate Films of 2016. In a world
where young girls are still treated poorly, denied access to education and the tradi-
tional realms of business and the marketplace, here is the enthralling drama of a
girl who begins an adventuresome journey into the male-dominated sport of chess
competitions.
“Sometimes the place you are used to is not the place you belong. Y ou belong
where you believe you belong. Where is that for you?"

St. Hilda’s Mission Principles At St. Hilda’s our aim is to create a sacred space where we can be nourished and
nourish others through our practices of Worship, Hospitality, and Justice.
Hospitality: The Lord’s Table is the foundation of our understanding of hospi-
tality - a safe place where all are welcome just as they are, broken yet blessed, all
seeking food that satisfies. We aim to be an inclusive, sacred space in our com-
munity. We support a variety of expression of Spirit where people are committed
to listen to each other, honour each other’s beliefs and perspectives, and to create
a safe environment for healthy, vibrant dialogue with friends and strangers alike.
Worship: As a Christ-centred community, our parish recognizes worship as a
means of inspiring connection to the Divine through prayer, contemplation, mu-
sic, and liturgy, with lay and ordained participation. We offer a variety of wor-
ship services to honour the diverse worshiping style of our community.
We value community more than an ascribed set of beliefs.
Justice: Our faith informs us that the foundation of our practice of justice is
right relationship with all of creation. Jesus calls us to seek out, serve, and learn
from those who are marginalized. We seek justice through compassionate listen-
ing, extending hospitality to all, advocacy, prayer, and caring for the earth.
