NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS

OFFERS HOLIDAY SUPPORTThis is the season everyone is “supposed” to look forwardto... the holidays. However, when we are dealing with mentalillness in our homes, it can also be overwhelming, stressful, chaotic, sad, scary, and totally emotional. When everyoneelse is shopping and singing carols, we are worrying if we aregoing to make it through without a crisis intervention.I’m here to let you know that you are not alone... these feelingsare normal and okay. Don’t feel guilty for them, don’t ignorethem, but don’t stress over them either... just acknowledgetheir existence and remember NAMI Rensselaer County is hereif you need some support. If you need to just talk during a quiet or stressful moment, feelfree to call either 488-6949 or 227-6701. We’d be happy tochat with you. If you are looking for a time to meet with us,our support group meets at the SUNYA College of Public Health, located at 1 University Drive in Rensselaer on the first andthird Wednesdays each month. The most important message we can give you is to take careof YOU first... everything else is secondary. Every year westress that we won’t be ready come the day of festivities andyet we do... just remember that. Since we aren’t probablygoing to have many roses to stop and smell, let’s change it to“Stop and enjoy the sounds and lights around you”... this timeis blessed, no matter what your spiritual belief is. Take a deepbreath, relax, and enjoy the beauty around you.Happy holidays and take care of you,~Mary Beth Honsinger & Mary Crowley, NAMI Support GroupFacilitators

DOORS OF HOPE EMBARKING ON

TWO GREEN PROJECTSBecause it has become increasingly expensive to purchasethe paper bags in which we package food for clients, we aretentatively planning to use cloth bags that can be returnedfor future use. If anyone has reusable grocery type bags thatcould be donated to the store, we would appreciate it.We also are starting a new “old” sneaker project. For yearswe have thankfully received your good used sneakers forresale in our store. We will continue to do that, but now anopportunity has opened for us to collect old unwearable rubbersoled sneakers. There is an organization that will buy them bythe pound and reprocess them for the manufacture of newproducts. The money realized from the sale will help us purchasefood for our food pantry. Doors of Hope is located on RT 150,one building south of the West Sand Lake intersection of routes43 and 150. We are open Monday through Friday from 9AM to4PM. TWIN TOWN TEENAGE BASEBALL

Twin Town Little League is currently exploring the possibilities ofexpanding into teenage baseball by adding three new levels ofplay. Junior League (13-14 year olds); Senior League (13-16 yearolds); The Big League (16-18 year olds). Plans are ongoing tobegin Junior League play in the spring of 2012 and based on thelevel of interest begin Senior League play in the spring as well. Theplaying season will run from late April thru mid-June. Games will beplayed on a field the same size as the Major Leagues. The teams will be community based and only open to players thatreside within the Twin Town Little League boundaries.Players thru All Stars will also have the ability to compete inInternational Tournaments at each level with the championshipgames being televised on ESPN. Registration will begin in January2012 and include a player registration fee of approximately $100.00- $125.00. This expansion will provide every teenager regardless oftheir ability an opportunity to play baseball with their friends withintheir own community. Further information may be found by visitingThe Twin Town Little League Expansion Information Center locatedon the league web site ttll.com

TWIN TOWN DEVIL CATS REGISTRATION

The Twin Town Devil Cats are taking registrations for playersfor our 9U team. Players who are 8 years old during the 2012season may also apply. We are also looking for a manager forthe 9U team. All players from all areas may apply, however, the organization mostly receives players from the Averill ParkSchool District. The Twin Town Devil Cats registration costsare contingent on what the team decides to do. Registrationcosts have to include umpire costs, team insurance, baseballs, field costs, etc. We do not subsidize registration prices fromothers registered in the organization like some organizations.Players at all ability levels are encouraged to apply and we willtry and create enough teams as there is interest. We are alsostill taking registrations for players at the 13U level who aremoving on from Little League. We are a non-profit organizationand are here to provide baseball for all. Don’t be fooled byorganizations that promote more fun for less cost, becausethat usually means less of everything else.Come play the best local baseball. All interested players shouldcontact Matt Terry at [email protected] or Steve Listingat [email protected].

TROY LIBRARY SYCAWAY BRANCH

CLOSING

The Board of Trustees of the

Troy Public Library voted to

adopt a very lean operating

budget for the library in 2012.

Since voters rejected the

proposed library budget back

in September, revenue for the

library reverts to the funding

level approved by voters in 2009 which provides for a library

levy of $890,000.

This along with additional pressures on the budget due to

the elimination of Rensselaer County support has led the

Board to make the decision to close the Sycaway Branch

Library in School 18 on Hoosick Street in an effort to

concentrate the library’s program of service at its two

remaining locations in Lansingburgh and downtown Troy.

“It was a difficult decision for the Board”, said Board President

Mary Muller. “The challenge is to avoid spreading ourselves

too thin with the resources we have to work with.” The

Sycaway Branch has been a part of the Troy Public Library

for a long time and is valued by neighborhood residents.

Circulation of books and other materials has been declining in

recent years and the branch is really too small to properly

serve the community. It has no handicapped access and rest

room facilities for public use are limited. In addition there is

no program space for either adult or children’s events. The

target date for closing the branch is Friday, January 6.

The Board looks forward to planning for improved public

library service to the Sycaway neighborhood in the future as

resources allow.

“HIGHWAY TERRORISTS”

Letter to the Editor: Heartache, frustration, deep sense ofloss are the effects heaped upon survivors from those whocause Death injury by over consuming Alcoholic beverages,The “HIGHWAY TERRORISTS”, (Intoxicated drivers) whoabound during the Sacred time of Christmas have no thoughtson the results of their selfishness. This year, I along with variousE.M.S. services, Police Agencies, Kathy Jimino, Chuck Wojton,Stop D.W.I. Director, we handed out over 450 + items at theannual D.W.I. Awareness event requesting care be used whenconsuming Alcoholic beverages. Brewers and Distillers spendBillions of dollars pushing their product, and if one notices, thesmall print on those “Drink Responsibly” at the very bottom ofthe commercial can hardly be read. Were the other mediaNews Directors @ WTEN<WNYT>WRGB afraid of a financialloss if too much was aired on our “Awareness Day”????.Please everyone, use common sense when partying! Getting“Smashed” is no way to enjoy Christmas, it’s no way for familiesto be agonized in an E.R. awaiting the positive or negativeresult of the actions of a “HIGHWAY TERRORIST”. We read, see way too often how many are out there with 5,6,7,8,9D.W.I’s and still driving. The law is not tough enough, way toomany District Attorneys pass out reductions beyond belief ie,Reductions in D.W.A.I. drugs down to reckless driving, anddisorderly conduct, this is moving it to a lesser crime, reducingthe “Aggravated D.W.I.”. Sealing the records of the “HIGHWAYTERRORISTS”, then they get voted back in again; thus provingthat “D.W.I. is America’s only socially acceptable crime ofviolence”.~Bill Dikant - D.W.I.
