As Aegean Marine Petroleum Celebrates 10 suc-cessful years of being listed on the New York Stock Exchange it is important to reflect on the course of a company from Greece that is making its mark as a global leader. Some time ago it was popular to regu-larly employ the phrase Think Globally, Act Locally. It was a convenient slogan that many companies used to

lay claim to high ideals—but often failed to deliver in essence. Aegean can be proud that it's appropriation of this worthy ideal travelled beyond the printed word—and into everyday practice.

In reaching the four corners of the world, through determination, strategic planning, and entrepreneurial grit, from headquarters in Piraeus, Aegean’s global presence has been formidable. With the NYSE listing as an anchor, and non-compromising excellence as a compass, this company has steered its course using the highest standards in the market. For example, achieving numerous ISO certifications, as Aegean has done, reflects a commitment to service, the environment, safety and forward planning that few companies manage. Competing in some of the toughest markets in the world, against established majors, is no easy task. Yet Aegean has proven over and over that innovation, timing, and market perceptiveness can secure victory.

At the same time, a global brand must have value beyond financial results and being devoted to local communities makes all the difference. For example, supplying heating oil to schools in Greece facing difficulties has a direct impact on the everyday lives of students—and teachers—who can then concentrate on building futures that might otherwise be in doubt. Or donating basic goods to people in need during the holy period of Easter, right here in Aegean’s neigh-borhood. “Charity begins at home” means that charitable behavior is a some-thing we learn in our local cultures, and are then able to carry out humanistic efforts wherever we are.

The global reach of Aegean carries a truly Greek set of values, that infuses the business actions of employees worldwide, and that is a local tradition that deserves recognition.

editorialRetailAEGEAN OIL has established a gas station network throughout Greece, and is one of the fastest growing companies in the retail market. AEGEAN’S gasoline market share in Greece is 8%.

On February 17, 2017

Aegean hosted its annual

New Year’s Vassilopita

celebration on the 8th

floor of the company’s

headquarters in Piraeus. In Greece the cutting and sharing of the Vassilopita, a New Year’s cake, is the traditonal manner to greet the new year. The event began with a greeting and speech by Dimitris Melissanidis, who reviewed the positive results of the

Aegean in GermanyAegean entered the German market in 2015 in the Port of Hamburg. Since then Aegean has

expanded significantly and as of 2016 has been able to provide comprehensive coverage at

Germany’s Baltic and North Sea ports.

Hamburg and North Sea AreaAegean Bunkering Germany acts as a physical sup-

plier in the Port of Hamburg, where the company

operates river and sea-going barges supported

by exclusive access to leased storage facilities on

River Weser.

In addition to supply in the Port of Hamburg, Aegean

offers delivery options in the region’s North Sea

ports including Bremerhaven, Bremen, Brake, Blex-

en, Nordenham, Cuxhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Emden

and other locations upon inducement.

Aegean has full control of the supply chain along

with the best blending expertise. Aegean is there-

fore able to ensure prime and tailored quality and

service for each and every customer.

Rostock and Baltic Sea AreaAegean took control of OBAST Bunkering and Trading GmbH

at the beginning of 2017.

OBAST expanded Aegean's presence in Germany's Baltic

ports, adding coverage of Rostock, Kiel, Luebeck-Travemu-

ende, Wismar, Stralsund, Greifswald, the Isle of Rugen and

other locations.

Aegean deploys one 1,600-dwt bunker barge supplemented

by barges owned and operated by exclusive partners. De-

livery by road truck wagon is also possible where required.

Deliveries across the full range of all German ports are

available on a 24/7 basis and Aegean has complete control

of the entire logistics chain from oil to storage to barging,

which ensures an "always-on-time" bunkering service.

More than 90,000 persons passed through the gates of Port Elizabeth Harbor

on March 25-26 for a unique expe-rience during the Port Festival orga-nized by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

“We were overwhelmed by the number of people who came down to experience the port,” Port Elizabeth Port Manager for Transnet Nation-al Ports Authority (TNPA), Rajesh

Dana. “We were delighted to share our vision, showcase what happens behind the gates, and create an envi-ronment of learning and discovery.”

The purpose of the event was to showcase some of the incredible technology, machinery, and maritime experiences to be had at the port, as well as offering tours to areas, usually closed to the public. The Port Bus Tours proved to be a huge hit with Festival visitors. The demand and

thirst for knowledge created a need to host extra tours on both days.

The Port Festival also provided a platform for local artists to showcase their talents and local businesses to plough their trade.

gy, logistics, processes, environment and management. "A Smart People's Port will be a driving force for the so-cio-economic development of the city and our province," adds Dana. "We cannot create and operate a smart port in a vacuum. It needs to be integrated with smart cities and its people."

During the People’s Port Festival festivalgoers would’ve also witnessed glimpses of the Port of PE’s vision to transform into a “Smart People’s Port”. One of the key projects in this transformational journey of the port is the development of the waterfront

and our philosophy of “starting small in a big way” was clearly demon-strated by our two recently opened restaurants that being Shisa (offering unique African cuisine) and Dock-side Lounge (offering a wide range of incredible entertainment). These two establishments complement a world-class yacht club, which hosts various international yachting regattas and a very active angling club.

“The success of this event rests largely with the port community and city which has been incredibly supportive and have embraced the

festival. So, I would like to thank each and every stakeholder for his or her contribution. I would further like to thank Aegean Bunkering Marine Ser-vices for their generous sponsorship. I would also like to thank the media, for the positive coverage and adver-tisements which have contributed to the good turnout,” said Mr. Dana.

Aegean has a strong presence in the area as it is the first company able to offer bunkers outside port limits (OPL) in South Africa to passing ships with bunkers at anchorage in South Africa’s Algoa Bay.

Greek Shipping: A European Asset Shipping is a pillar of the European economy and Greek ship-

ping is vital to the economic welfare of all of Europe.

Addressing a maritime conference in Athens this past Janu-

ary, Shipping & Island Policy Minister Panagiotis Kouroumb-

lis said trust in shipping is needed for it to face the challeng-

es of our time. “Europeans must understand Greek shipping

is a powerful weapon for Europe,” said the minister, talking

about Greek and European shipping and the industry's com-

petitiveness and prospects in these uncertain times.

Union of Greek Shipowners President Theodore Veniamis

also underlined the importance of shipping to Europe. He de-

scribed shipping as "a national treasure" for Greece, without

having political party affiliations, and this enables the shipping community and the State to

share a common aim, especially when it comes to increasing the direct links with the country's

economy and overall welfare.

The Union of Greek Shipowners Celebrates 100 years In November of 2016 the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS) celebrated their 100th anniversary. President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, and three former Prime Ministers were among the 1,800 guests who attended the event at the Athens Concert Hall.Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras described the establishment of the UGS 100 years ago as "a milestone for both Greek shipping and the Greek economy," going on to praise Greek shipowners, “who are recognized globally for their business acumen and their ability to make the right decision at the right time, by acting against the current.”UGS president, Theodore Veniamis, said the Union is the home of the Greek shipping family and "proof of the importance and the superiority of collective action over the years in defending the institutional interests of Greek shipping, a difficult, demanding but also honorable task."

New Technology to Watch the Sea in 3DScientists at the University of Venice

and the Institute of Marine Sciences

of the National Research Council

found that exceptionally high waves

are more common than previously

assumed by theoretical models

while looking at waves in the open

sea with “electronic eyes,” so as to

reconstruct it in 3D. In other words

they measured a moving surface, the

sea, using cameras that constantly

change their point of view due to

being mounted on floating objects in

motion. The scientific team carried

out their study in the Adriatic Sea

and published their results in the

Journal of Physical Oceanography

after two years of development and

open water testing.

Extreme waves in a storm are those

whose height exceeds double the

significant wave height. Knowing

their actual frequency of occurrence

is crucial not only to oceanographers

dealing with the improvement of

theories, but also to designers of

offshore ships and platforms. The

system uses artificial intelligence:

two synchronized digital cameras are

secured on the sea surface and iden-

tify common points that stereoscopic

vision can place in a three-dimen-

sional space. The data derived from

the observed points, combined with

the results of statistical models, are

processed according to a numerical

open source code, which reconstructs

the sea surface in 3D. Using a

remote device, the operator can see

the three-dimensional reconstruction

of the waves on his screen, but more

importantly he has real-time data

available on a wave surface of thou-

sands of square meters.

World Ocean Council Works to Advance Arctic Sustainable Development The World Ocean Council (WOC) CEO, Paul Holthus, attended the Arctic Business Council Summit and the Arctic Frontiers conference in Tromso, Norway in January 2017, where he engaged with stakeholders from business, government, science, environment and other communities and had the oppor-tunity to speak about the WOC initiative to develop Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets and indicators particularly relevant to Arctic industries.Mr. Holthus also participated in panels with government ministers as well as senior business, academic and environment leaders, where he outlined the role of WOC in developing programs to advance ocean sustainable development in the Arctic, such as the WOC Smart Ocean-Smart Industries program, which is working to scale up the use of industry vessels to collect ocean data in areas, such as the Arctic, where information is needed to understand and monitor ocean conditions and change.Source: www.oceannews.com

Making Sure Blue Economy is Green Humans seem to think that there’s a

limitless capacity to industrialize the

oceans. For this reason there is a need

to effectively measure, monitor and

sustainably manage this 71% of the

Earth's surface.

As we no longer look to the ocean

solely for protein and waterways,

but also as a source for many more

aspects of our society, greater atten-

tion is needed for the industrialization

of our oceans, which have long been

considered as a source of inexhaust-

ible resources and reservoirs for

unwanted waste. We are increasingly

using the oceans in all of the ways we

have used the land, resulting in great

changes, such as increased fish farm-

ing, seaborne trade, marine mining,

and offshore oil and gas production.

Making sure the blue economy is green

requires avoidance of the mistakes

made in managing terrestrial based

resources. The oceans are truly an

international resource and, as such,

require international cooperation and

support. We need to reimagine the

oceans as a shared space and resource

capable of providing social, environ-

mental and economic good, but only if

transparency, coordination, and com-

mitment to balancing competing goals

are at the core of public policy and gov-

ernance, finance and the management

of global supply chains.

traffic achieved an increase of 24%. At a time of continuous difficulty in the Eastern Mediter-

ranean, the Aegean is a sea of security and peace and the Piraeus cruise port is a modern hub,

which provides complete services to passengers and ships.

The Port of FujairahAegean began operations in Fujairah in 2000. Without a doubt, Fujairah is one of the world’s most strategically important locations for shipping and the petroleum industry. In addition to providing 24/7 bunkering services and lubricants in this key Gulf lo-

cation, Aegean owns and operates a major storage facility, with a capacity of more than 450.000 cbm.

Port of Fujairah is the only multi-purpose port on the Eastern seaboard of the United Arab Emir-ates, approximately 70 nautical miles from the Straits of Hormuz. Initial Construction of the Port started in 1978 as part of the economic devel-opment of the UAE. Full operations commenced in 1983. Since then the Port has embarked on a continuing

process of enhancement to both its facilities and its comprehensive range of functions.

The Piraeus Port Authority (PPA) and China Cosco Ship-ping Corporation Limited

(Cosco) are about to begin a major upgrade to the Port of Piraeus, further consolidating plans to have Greece’s main port a leading trading hub in Europe, an international cruise desti-nation, and a global ship repair center.

The investment plan, totaling 137.5 million Euro for 2017, is an integral part of the programs agreed by PPC and Cosco.

“We will continue the investments in Piraeus port” said Cosco’s General Director and Chairman Wan Min on the occasion of the transfer of 51 per-cent of Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) shares to the Chinese giant in 2016. Mr. Min added: “We will improve the port’s international position with the aim to contribute in the devel-opment of the Greek economy, the strengthening of competitiveness and the creation of jobs,” adding that the acquisition of the Port and Cosco’s ac-tivity in Piraeus constitutes one of the most important international projects implemented by the Chinese group.

The 2017 investment program targets a number of key improve-ments that will allow the port to serve emerging trends in shipping, cruising and overall travel requirements. Some of the targeted projects are:Cruise Port Expansion, through the creation of six new berthing positions to serve new-generation cruise vesselsShip Repair Zone infrastructure im-provement through the procurement of equipment and the creation of new installationsLogistics Center construction at the ODDY site with a total surface area of 120,000 square meters, including an underground road link to the car terminalNew Oil Pier (Pier III) constructionCar Terminal Expansion (Herakleous)

Multiplier EffectThis upgrade of the port zone is ex-pected to encourage passengers and other visitors to spend more time at the Port of Piraeus, whose passenger traffic is by far the highest in the Med-iterranean—more than twice that of Naples, in distant second place. The

Italian port had 6.32 million passen-gers in 2015, according to the annual study of the Association of Mediterra-nean Cruise Ports (MedCruise).

The report showed that Greece recorded the second highest coastal shipping traffic in the Mediterranean (after Italy) in 2015, with 25.2 million passengers—the figures for 2016 are not yet available. Italy and Greece cover 70 percent of the total coastal shipping traffic in the Mediterranean, accounting for 37.3 percent and 32.7 percent respectively.

A significant factor contributing to Piraeus’s huge passenger numbers is its link with the Saronic islands, particularly nearby Salamina. It is also the main port linking continental Greece with hundreds of islands in the Aegean.

former head of the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), expressed his optimism that Cosco’s investment strategy at the port of Pi-raeus will mark the Greek economy’s turn to growth and his hope that Pi-raeus will become an even larger port with Cosco’s active participation.

Piraeus is the biggest coastal ship-ping port among 69 organized ports in the Mediterranean, according to data compiled by MedCruise, while the new management of Piraeus Port Authority, controlled by the Cosco Group since last year, is preparing to add to its real estate as a part of its general upgrading plan.

Port of Piraeus The Port of Piraeus served as the port of Athens since ancient times. Today, the Port of Piraeus is the largest Greek seaport and one of the biggest in the Mediterranean Sea. Situated at the outskirts of Athens and only 10 km away from the city center, it acts as the main gate for Hellenic imports and ex-ports. Also, as the Port is situated close to the international trade routes, it acts as a hub of international trade, being the only European port in the East Mediterranean with the infrastructure ro accommodate transshipment cargo.

The Port of Piraeus is a major em-ployer in the region and is operated by the Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA). With about 18.6 million passengers, Piraeus was the busiest passenger port in Europe in 2015. Since 2009 the port's container handling has grown rapidly. Piraeus handled 3.32 million TEUs in 2015 and 3.67 million in 2016. According to Lloyd's list for top 100 container ports in 2015, Piraeus ranked 8th in Europe and 3rd in the Mediterranean Sea. As a result the Port of Piraeus plays a crucial role in the development of international trade as well as the local and national economy.

With a modern history dating from 1924 when major civil works began, the Port of Piraeus has a range of ac-tivities concerning the Commercial and Central Ports, ship services and real estate development. It connects continental Greece with the islands, is an international cruise center and a commercial hub for the Mediterra-

nean, providing services to ships of any type and size.

PPA SA employs more than 1,100 people and annually provides ser-vices to more than 24,000 ships. PPA S.A contributes to local and national economic growth and is further de-veloped by upgrading both its infra-structure and services provided.

The Port of Piraeus offers unique competitive advantages because of its strategic position and infrastructure:Strategic geographical position at the crossroads of Asia - Africa - EuropeInfrastructure and natural depths for the accommodation of even the largest modern container shipsOperation under a free zone type II status24 hour - 365 day operation of the Container and Car TerminalsScale of tariffs based on the volume of transshipment containers and carsCompetitive storage feesExtended feeder services connecting the port with almost all main ports in the MediterraneanIntegrated information system sup-porting port operationsOperational and safety standards according to international regulations

As new CEO, what is your overall approach in directing Ae-gean Shipping Management? Coming in as CEO of ASM, we have agreed with the Chair-man of the Board, Mr. George Melissanidis, to proceed with a number of strategic objectives that will embrace everything we do. The overall principles we apply revolve around Safe, Clean and Efficient operations and it is my and the Management Team’s responsibility to achieve these objectives.

What are some of the key elements of your overall business performance priorities?I can summarize these in two words: “Operational Excel-lence.”

What does “Operational Excellence” mean for Aegean Shipping Management? To determine this, we have outlined performance goals, further identified our considerable ca-pabilities, and carried out strategic brainstorming reviews to defined six key elements of Operational Excellence:• Safety & Environmental Culture• Leadership & People Development• Engagement & Communication• Learning• Efficiency & Effectiveness• Technology

Regarding health, safety and environment, how important are these objectives and metrics in shipping today? We firmly believe that strong business performance can only be achieved by having a strong safety and environ-mental performance and our aim is to be on “Level Zero” at all times in terms of serious incidents and accidents,

as well as for down time. This is the best way to meet our customers’ requirements. Therefore, one of my main prior-ities, since joining ASM, is developing and enhancing our overall company culture for Safety and Environmental Pro-tection. This goes far beyond individual metrics or KPIs and is all about behaviors and attitude towards Safety and the Environment – the “softer” people issues.

How does a company integrate its people into its strategic objectives in a meaningful, win-win way?Engagement of our people is the most critical piece of the puzzle. Experience has shown time and time again that if you do not achieve positive engagement then your overall performance can be seriously affected. So we have already introduced a number of initiatives, from recruit-ment interviews to on-the-job training sessions and shore seminars, to optimize the “people factor” in all our critical operations. We want to use these initiatives to move our business focus and center on our people, first to ensure their own safety, and also to strengthen their overall safety and environmental behaviors —ultimately their safety is in their own hands but our role is to do everything we can to promote a positive approach, conditions and culture to achieve that.

Efficiency and effectiveness are buzz words we hear a lot. How are the two related and what difference can they make at Aegean Shipping? We are one of the few shipping companies globally to have developed and implemented “5 ISOs”—Quality, Environ-ment, Health & Safety, Energy and Business Continuity Management—within our Integrated Management System.

Apostolos Poulovassilis, recently appointed CEO of Aegean Shipping Management (ASM), discusses

the strategic objectives the company will embrace.

But we continuously need to keep testing these systems and processes to ensure that they are not only efficient, in terms of the resources applied, but also effective in terms of their outputs, especially on our vessels and within the ship-shore interfaces. An example of this is with the fleet’s voyage planning and execution process, where our state-of-the-art monitoring system enables us to track individual tasks and steps and identify improvements to achieve opti-mization of performance.

Technology cannot be ignored in today’s environment. How does technology play its role along side the other compo-nents of the Aegean business strategy? Technological Change Management is equally important as having new technology itself. If you can’t effectively apply and integrate new technology then your return on investment is seriously jeopardized. So, starting from our newbuilding specifications as well as the review of retrofit requirements for our ships in-service, we have initiated and carried out a change management process which ex-amines, apart from all necessary regulatory and technical requirements, the overall feasibility analysis of applying technological developments, including the effects on the human element. This is not limited to additional training but also extends to the adaptation or changes to practices and processes that need to be implemented to be able to achieve the added value from the new technology. One main example of this is our company’s application of pio-neering IT systems both ashore and on our vessels. ASM’s Central Office Datacenter infrastructure is based on virtu-alized green computing technology by utilizing maximum resources, security and service availability with minimum energy consumption and a fully paperless information system. Through this, we can provide secure informa-tion exchange data eco-friendly services to end users and partners, including the utilization of modern technology against cyber-risks.

Aegean Shipping has been a pioneer in many areas, including its Green Fleet. Are you confident the future is promising? There have been a number of significant regulatory de-velopments over the past year, especially in the field of environmental legislation, which will mean that the indus-try will have to go through potentially complex changes; Ballast Water Management, Global Sulphur Cap and Mon-itoring, Reporting & Verification of Emissions are just a few of these which we need to assess and implement over the next two to three years. In view of this, the deployment of our “Green Fleet,” which is a modern and high-spec

series of vessels, with strong environmental credentials, will certainly be an advantage for us within the complex regulatory roadmap.

Looking ahead in the short-medium term, we do expect conditions to remain challenging for both the clean and dirty products sectors; therefore it is important to aim for differentiation as much as possible. The Green Fleet concept is initially being expanded with the delivery and addition of two Aframax Tanker newbuildings from Cosco Zhoushan in China next year, and we will continue to pur-sue market opportunities to enhance our company’s overall business performance.

Past experience, and especially recent developments within the global big picture, have shown us that we should always “expect the unexpected” and never rely on over-confidence. However, by integrating effective busi-ness planning with entrepreneurial instinct and investment in people, we aim to create a bright, successful, and sus-tainable future for Aegean Shipping Management.

Talk to us a bit about your business and your area.We operate two service stations. The first one is located on the outskirts of Argostoli, the island's capital, while the second, the newest and smallest of the two, is located at a distance of 14 km from Argostoli, in the village of Vlahata. Vlahata is a beautiful village. A lot of tourists visit the village in the summer months. In the vicinity of the village, visitors can visit Lourdas beach, which is of exceptional beauty.

Talk to us about the services you pro-vide and your customer base. How long have you been operating this service station? We opened the service station in Vla-hata in the summer of 2016. We sell Ae-gean car fuel and lubricants, as well as heating oil. There’s also a mini market on the premises. At our other service station in Argostoli we also operate a car wash and a lubricants station.

The service station in Vlahata is new, fully renovated and stands out in the village. All locals love it.

As an added benefit to the locals we offer them the ability to pay their utility bills at our service station. So our shop is full of people every day!

Business is good all year round. In the winter we work with the locals, while the summer is our busiest season.

And how long have you been in the fuel business? Since 2006.

How long have you been collaborating with Aegean? We have been collaborating with Ae-gean for the past eleven years.

How did you come to the decision to join the Aegean retail network? What is your impression of your collabora-tion with Aegean so far? An associate of mine introduced me

to Aegean and Iakovos Melissanidis. My meeting with Mr. Melissanidis played a key role in my decision. It was the personal contact with Aege-an’s people that won me over. I felt that I could rely on our cooperation. Indeed, for the past eleven years we have not had a single problem in our dealings. Recently we renewed our contract for another five years.

Built in the southern part of the island on the main road that connects Argostoli, the capital of Kefalonia, with Poros, one of the largest ports in the southeast end of the island, Vlahata is one of the largest and most populous villages of Kefalonia. The picturesque village lies at the foot of Mount Enos at an altitude of 187 meters with an endless view of the Ionian Sea and northern Zakynthos.

How long has this service station been in operation? Have you been in the fuel business for a long time? This service station has been in oper-ation since September 2015. We have been with Aegean since the begin-ning. My partner, Mr. Stavrou, and I operate a few more service stations in the wider area. We have been in this business since 2007. Before that we worked in fuel transport (since 2003). How did you choose Aegean? How did you come to the decision to join the Aegean service station network? Our choice was based on Aegean’s personable approacj and the personal contact we had with the company's people. The meeting we had with Iako-vos Melissanidis played a very big role. How is your collaboration with Aegean? We began collaborating with Aegean,

as I mentioned, about a year and a half ago. We have an extensive network of service stations in Eastern Greece that covers Ioannina, and part of Arta and Igoumenitsa. We work with Aegean in all our service stations. Our collabora-tion has been excellent.

Tell us a few words about your custom-er base.We have a steady clientele, twelve months a year. Our area is not popular with tourists.

How did your clientele respond to the

change you made and the Aegean brand in general?Aegean renovated our service station, renewing the equipment and the over-all image of the shop. Our customers know us and trust us and have had a personal relationship with us for years. But the very positive outcome and the renewal of their confidence (after the change) is a result of the very good cooperation we have with Aegean. De-spite the fact that we are amidst a peri-od of crisis, our service station is com-petitive and our network covers a large part of the market.

Seventy four modern Greek paint-ings complete this thematic exhi-bition with representative works

of Constantinos Volanakis, Vassilios Chatzis, Ioannis Altamouras, Constan-tinos Maleas, Nikolaos Lytras, Con-stantinos Parthenis, Michalis Econo-mou, Nikos Chadjikyriakos-Ghikas, Gerasimos Steris, Spyros Papaloukas, Thanos Tsigos, Paris Prekas, Panay-iotis Tetsis, Demosthenes Kokkinidis, Costas Tsoclis, Vassilis Theocharakis, Maria Filopoulou, Yiannis Adamakos, Thanasis Makris and Michalis Made-nis. All the works come from the col-lections of the Greek National Gallery and the E. Koutlidis Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, the Sotiris Felios’ Collection, and the B. & M. Theo-charakis Foundation. The exhibition follows a sequential evolution of the Greek seascape from the 19th to the 20th century and is divided into three sections, based on the morphological features that distinguish the works of art. This brief overview and the ref-erences to Greek artworks represent

an attempt to visualize the seascape evolution in modern Greek art. Mar-itime motifs exist throughout the history of Greek art, highlighting the crucial importance of the Aegean Sea in determining the Greek identity, and confirming Odysseas Elytis’ belief that the sea is the heir of Greek tradition.

The Director of the National Gal-lery, Alexandros Soutzos Museumand Professor Emeritus of History of Art, Marina Lambraki-Plaka, said: "The sea, along with marine subjects, prevail in the art which has flourished in Greece since 3000 BC—from the frescoes of Thera and Minoan Crete to pottery dec-orations featuring triremes, sailing ships or marine gods and heroes. Seascape painting survives in folk art during the long Ottoman occupation period before re-emerging along with the restoration of the Greek State following the War for Independence. The leading role of Greek sailors in the war, their bold operations at sea, as well as sea battles, would generate rich themes in the Greek ‘Munich School’ of painting."

The curator of the exhibition, Lam-prini Karakourti-Orfanopoulos, said: "’Para Thin Alos’: the phrase known from Homer’s Iliad, represents a gem of our linguistic tradition and simul-taneously takes us to the verbal rich-ness that we, Greeks, have created as a people, referring to the vast and mag-ical world of the sea. The sea in the Iliad, the archetypal and ancient sym-bol of human wandering and adven-ture, will identify with man’s journey, and will determine Greek culture and historical continuity. The theme of the exhibition, the sea, directly con-nected with the life of the Greek peo-ple, their history and experiences, ac-quires a symbolic role nowadays. For the visitor of the exhibition, it pres-ents a journey filled with Greek light and color, following all stages of sea-scape art from the mid 19th century to present time."

This past February the Minister of Culture, Lydia Koniordou, inaugurated the exhibition “Para

Thin Alos (meaning ‘By the Sea’ in ancient Greek): Seascapes in Modern Greek Art, from

the collections of the Greek National Gallery and the E. Koutlidis Foundation" at the B. & M.

The prefecture of Pella belongs to the Region of Central Macedonia. The modern capital is the city of Edessa. Over the years the region’s morphological diversity, the unique natural environment as well

as human interventions, as reflected in the history, culture and tradition of the area, have established tourism as a key component of the development of Pella, which attracts a significant number of visitors every year.

A Rich HistoryThe most important archaeological site of Pella is undoubtedly the ancient capital of the Macedonian Kingdom of Pella. Ancient Pella is located in the vicinity of the modern capital of Macedonia and includes a huge excavated area of over 70,000 square meters. In the heart of the ancient city, around a large central agora, archaeologists have gradually revealed a complex of arcades and rows constructed in a grid-like pattern, where archives, the headquarters of the city's rulers, other public services and many workshops and shops used to be.
