Short Haul Route: Paris

Paris and Tokyo

General overview

Paris is the capital and most populous city of France, located in northern central France. It has a population of 2,270,000 within its administrative limits and 12,200.000 in the region.

Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a Celtic people called the Parisii, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, it was the largest city in the western world and a prosperous trading centre. By the 17th century Paris was also one of Europe’s major centres of finance, commerce, fashion, science and arts. Position that it still holds.

With an incomparable heritage of historic sites, iconic monuments and attractions, Paris is a dream destination for visitors in search of places to discover. Among Paris’ important museums and cultural institutions are the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée National d’Art Moderne in the Pompidou Centre. The central area of the city along the Seine River is classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site, and includes many notable monuments, including Notre Dame Cathedral (12th century to 13th century, the Sainte-Chapelle (13th century); the Eiffel Tower (1889), the Grand Palais and Petit Palais (1900); and the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre (1914).

The city is served by three commercial international airports: Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly and Beauvais-Tillé. There is also one general aviation airport, Paris-Le Bourget, which is used only for private business flights.

Potential Routes

Spain is connected to Paris from 22 airports (Barcelona-El Prat, A.S. Madrid-Barajas, Malaga-Costa del Sol, Valencia, Seville, Palma de Majorca, Alicante-Elche, Bilbao, Ibiza, Tenerife South, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Girona, Menorca, Santiago, Zaragoza, Asturias, La Palma, Santander, Tenerife North, and Valladolid).

In 2016 there were 8,2 m passengers who travelled from Spain to Paris.

Even though there is a good connectivity with Spain, there are stll some routes with potential.

One of this potential routes would be Santander-Paris (according to Aena’s statistics this route reached more than 40,000 pax in 2011 and had more than 65,000 Skyscanner searches in 2016).

Aena’s marketing team will be glad to make a tailor made business case for you, so do not hesitate to contact us.

Long Haul Route: Tokyo

General overview

Tokyo is a cosmopolitan city, center of the culture, politics and economy of Japan. The city receives each year large numbers of visitors from all over the world in search of the enchanting beauty of the most visited areas like Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Roppongi and Odaiba, as well as the electronic district, Akihabara, where you can buy high-tech gadgets.

Appart from that, Japan is also well known by the seasonal spectacle of the cherry blossom which is part of Japan’s most deep-rooted cultural and philosophical beliefs.

But there is much more to do in Tokyo: hiking, fishing, surfing, swimming with the dolphins and watching the whales are some of the activities that you can enjoy all year round.

When travelling to Tokyo, you cannont miss the tea ceremony in one of the tea houses surrounded by Japanese gardens. The tea ceremony is an art itself that takes time to learn and aims at expressing the ideals of harmony, purity, respect, tranquility and appreciation for the moment.

In essence, a city with the right mixture of past, present, tradition and modernity which is worth visiting once in a lifetime.

Paris and Tokyo

Cantabria 2017:Liébana Holy Year in Cantabria

This year, Cantabria will be celebrating the Liébana Holy Year. This is one of the most important social, cultural and religious events in the Region, involving an extensive programme of festivities which will bring tourists and visitors to the Region.

Although traditionally Liébana’s Holy Year was inaugurated when the feast day of Santo Toribio, the 16th April, falls on a Sunday, this year in order to coincide with Easter, will be inaugurated on 23rd April until 22rd April of the following year.

Thousands of followers will present themselves before the Puerta del Perdón (Door of Forgiveness), to travel through and obtain

jubileo (papal jubilee). Achieving this goal is one of the visitors’ aims but those who arrive at Santo Toribio will also have the opportunity to enjoy the artistic, cultural and natural wealth of Cantabria.

The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is one of the only five Christian holy places and pilgrimage destinations in the world, with the privilege of being considered a Land of Jubilee Indulgence. The Lignum Crucis, the largest known piece of the holy cross on which Jesus Christ died, is preserved and worshipped in the monastery.

One of the best ways to arrive in Santo Toribio is taking the Camino Lebaniego. This way is a

branch of the James´s North Way, that emerged with the aim of taking pilgrims to venerate the relics of Santo Toribio. Both ways were added to the list of World Heritage sites in July 2015.

Since the opening of the Door of Forgiveness at the Monastery of Santo Toribio, in the district of Liébana, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have come to the Region to earn the Jubilee Indulgence and enjoy the leisure and cultural activities organised for the occasion. Many cultural events have been organised to celebrate the Holy Year. Concerts such as Jean-Michel Jarre, Scorpions and Enrique Iglesias, are confirmed. About 1,000 cultural and sporting activities are waiting for visitors in Cantabria during this year.

A city with hundreds of possibilities

Don’t miss Santander

Santander, the capital of Cantabria Region, is one of the most elegant and beautiful cities on the North of Spain,. It is located on a beautiful South-facing bay, which belongs to the Club of the World’s Most Beautiful Bays.

Tourism in Santander began in the mid-nineteenth century with the first “wave baths” on the Sardinero beaches and culminated with the summer visits of the King of Spain from 1913 to 1930, becoming the summer court during this period. It was the heyday of the city and the period its most representative buildings date from: the Palacio Real de La Magdalena, the Hotel Real and the Gran Casino, buildings, which radiate splendour even today.

Few cities can boast including within their urban area a dozen beaches with such diverse characteristics and, at the same time, so attractive: family, sheltered, distinguished and sporting beaches.

Its elegant promenades and avenues (Pereda, Castelar or Reina Victoria) offer visitors the charm of a city that has managed to combine tradition and modernity, where nature plays the lead role in any space. The city has a rich and varied cultural and artistic heritage to enjoy. Two events have marked the cultural development of Santander in recent decades: the Menéndez Pelayo International University and the International Festival of Santander, events of great significance that have projected the image of the city outside our borders.

The center of the city culture has created a ring around a network of museums that weaves the space, offering a diverse range, including the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Santander and Cantabria, the Maritime Museum of Cantabria (MMC), the Museum of Prehistory, the cathedral or the Interpretation Center of the Ancient Springs.

All these qualities, along with many others (unique scenery and large number of hotels), have succeeded in making the Cantabrian capital one of the favourite destinations in Spain for organizing all kinds of professional, social or sporting events. Proof of this is the upcoming June 2017 World Sailing Cup in the waters of the bay.

Cantabria, nature in blue and green

Don’t miss Cantabria

Cantabria has more than two hundred kilometres of coastline that enclose a wide variety of landscapes. Steep cliffs alternate with small islands, deep estuaries, spacious bays and beautiful beaches. Three out of the six protected natural areas in the region are directly linked to the coast: the Oyambre Natural Park, the Liencres Dunes Natural Park and the Santoña and the Victoria and Joyel Marshes Natural Park. Around them are based lively fishing villages where tourism and history come together in respectful harmony. In this vast space a wide range of recreational activities (fishing, diving, etc.) or sports (sailing, rowing, surfing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, etc.) are offered, which help to diversify and enrich the holiday entertainment. There are about one hundred beaches of high natural and scenic value on the coastline of Cantabria.

Green Cantabria is inland. An area subdivided into valleys formed by short, steeply sloping rivers, which produce very sharp reliefs at their sources and gentle reliefs in their intermediate courses. These areas are dominated by the countless shades of green that colour the forests and meadows, and rolling hills which alternate with high mountains. The Cantabrian Network of Protected Natural Spaces incorporates 37 spaces. These include The Picos the Europa National Park.

Cantabria has also one of the most important rock art heritages in the world with ten Cantabrian caves declared World Heritage by UNESCO. Altamira is one of those that had registered its name in such a prestigious list.

Cantabria, a real treat for the palate

Don’t miss Cantabria

The privileged location of Cantabria, with deep river valleys and mountains, and bathed by the sea it gives its name to, gives it a natural larder with the finest raw materials from both the sea and the land. The richness and diversity of its products, coupled with traditional processing methods make Cantabria a special place to enjoy the most exquisite gastronomic delicacies. The famous anchovies, the cheeses, the well known sobao pasiego (traditional sponge cake), Cantabrian meat, fish, shellfish and various foods covered by Controlled Quality brands complete the roll of honour of Cantabrian delicacies.

A little known but significant fact is that Cantabria currently provides the first largest regional concentration of Michelin stars in Spain per habitant. The Region has five restaurants with this esteemed award, (two of them with two stars) which clearly demonstrates the high level of Cantabrian cuisine.

Nevertheless, the offer is so plural that it can be adapted to all kinds of pockets.
